Man Utd now leading race for £39m rising star with INEOS scouts blown away

Manchester United have made some impressive inroads this campaign and could now look to sign a “unique” talent from the continent to strengthen their level of output in attack.

Man Utd look to January window under Ruben Amorim

Despite some trials and tribulations along the way, Manchester United have made a decent start to the Premier League campaign and find themselves in contention for European football at the midway point of the season.

Ruben Amorim has began to show tactical flexibility and has earned another layer of credit after his side held firm to secure a slender victory over Newcastle United. Nevertheless, their lack of depth is something that may need addressed in January amid an injury crisis of sorts.

However, the former Sporting boss did make it clear that Mason Mount’s withdrawal at half-time during their clash against the Magpies was taken as a precaution, which will come as a relief to supporters as the Red Devils close out the year.

He said in his post-match press conference: “He felt something at half-time. He wanted to go, and that is also a good thing. He wanted to go in the second half, but cannot lose more players, and if you are not 100 per cent, Jack (Fletcher) did a very good job.”

Alongside his need for midfielders, Manchester United are closing in on a surprise pre-contract move for Auxerre striker Lassine Sinayoko. He will be available for free next summer, and could arrive in January for a cut-price fee if circumstances align.

Now, Manchester United could be willing to swat aside rivals to bring in an exciting star who could add some pace and a new dimension in the wide areas.

Man Utd at front of queue to sign Hoffenheim's Bazoumana Toure

According to CaughtOffside, Manchester United are said to be at the front of the queue to sign Hoffenheim’s Bazoumana Toure after running scouting checks on the Ivorian winger.

Arsenal are also in the hunt for his signature, and scouts who have been involved in data-driven analysis of his play have been blown away by his ‘ability to operate in transition-heavy systems’ both at club and international level, something that is becoming a key feature within the Premier League world.

Zirkzee & Sesko upgrade: Man Utd could sign "one of the best CFs in PL"

Friday’s narrow in over Newcastle showcased why another centre-forward is still needed at Manchester United.

ByRobbie Walls

With his market price set to soar should he be included in the Ivory Coast’s World Cup squad, Toure has registered two goals and five assists in 16 appearances this term and is only going up in the estimations of clubs across Europe.

Valued at around £39 million, Manchester United will face a tough fight to land the 19-year-old, but he looks to be worth every penny judging by his level of output at such a young age.

Celtic: Kieran Devlin drops Giorgos Giakoumakis update

Celtic correspondent Kieran Devlin has provided an update on striker Giorgos Giakoumakis following his absence against Hibernian on Sunday.

The Lowdown: Easter Road blank

The Hoops made a number of changes against Bodo/Glimt last week, seemingly prioritising the league fixture at Easter Road on Sunday.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-22/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Giakoumakis started in Norway but was missing from the squad against Hibs, with Daizen Maeda leading the line.

Unfortunately, Celtic couldn’t find a breakthrough against Shaun Maloney’s side and had to settle for a 0-0 draw. There was good news, though, with Rangers failing to take advantage of the Hoops’ slip up, drawing with Motherwell just hours later to ensure the gap at the top of the Premiership stayed at three points.

The Latest: Devlin’s update

Devlin ran a Q&A on The Athletic on Sunday and answered a question regarding Giakoumakis.

He relayed comments from Ange Postecoglou who said the striker was ‘ill’ and hopes to have the 27-year-old back against St Mirren on Wednesday.

“He’s ill, Postecoglou hopes he’s back for Wednesday.”

The Verdict: Fingers crossed

Giakoumakis was the hero in Celtic’s last league win against Dundee, scoring a hat-trick at Parkhead.

He was labelled as ‘hugely important’ by Postecoglou following that display, so it would be good news if he can return to the squad tomorrow evening.

Postecoglou is already without Kyogo Furuhashi and Albian Ajeti due to injury, leaving Maeda and youngster Johnny Kenny as the only options without Giakoumakis. Fingers crossed he will shake off his illness and pick up from where he left off at Celtic Park.

Is Relegation on the Cards for Everton?

Relegation in the Premier League must be one of the scariest outcomes of the competition for each soccer club. Not only does it prove that your team did not perform well enough in the top division but being relegated to the championship (division one) can cost you players and sponsorship. With just over 7 months of the Premier League already gone, many are questioning whether or not Everton will yield the best soccer odds? We are keeping a close eye, but in the meantime, let’s unpack just how the soccer team is doing in the league.

League tiers and how they work

The Premier League is the league every English soccer team wants to play in and the one every fan loves – interestingly enough, countless US-based fans adore the Premier League. And all you need to do to join is play your heart out and win games. Founded in February 1992, the current Premier League (as we know it today) season has seen 20 teams battle it out since August last year to snatch the title from 2020/2021 season winners Manchester City. City is currently in first place as we head into match week 26 of the competition. At this point, Everton sits 16th on the log with 22 points. Did you know? Manchester United has won the Premier League 13 times, with Manchester City and Chelsea in second place with five trophies. After a whirlwind season in 2019/2020, Liverpool lifted their first cup; it was a memorable occasion since the club has been the butt of all jokes by Manchester United fans, also their biggest rivals. None of the above clubs has ever been relegated, including Everton.

Photos by Unsplash

Let’s look at relegation and promotion. Teams are transferred across different divisions according to their performance for a completed season. Usually, the bottom three teams in the Premier League at the end of the season will be relegated to the EFL Championship. And conversely, the top three teams from the EFL Championship will be promoted to the Premier League. Only the bottom two teams in the Premier League will be relegated in some instances, while the third team must battle for their spot against the third team from the EFL Championship. Whoever wins is then added to the Premier League roster for the new season. Everton is in 16th place as the log stands, so there is no need for concern, but as with any sport, things can change overnight.

Gameplay

Everton has not been doing too badly since the kickoff of the Premier League. In their first match against Southampton, Everton beat the team 3 – 1 in Liverpool. And for the first three months, things were looking good. Everton won four, drew two, and lost three out of the first nine games of the 2021/2022 season. But by mid-November, things had taken a turn for the worse. By December, Everton had suffered a massive defeat by their fiercest rivals, Liverpool. To be exact, Everton lost 4 – 1 in this epic derby match but managed to beat Arsenal 2 – 1 just a week later – which has so far proved to be the last game Everton has won since. But with Frank Lampard at the helm, what is going wrong? Frank has gone as far as saying the team needs a mentality shift, so we hope for the best. For most of his career, Frank played for Chelsea as a midfielder. He also played for Manchester City and West Ham United as a midfielder, so he is more than capable of coaching this team.

Everton faces a tough battle for their next 15 matches. Will they be relegated? As it stands now, Everton is in a good enough space to form part of the 2022/2023 Premier League season. And it will be interesting to see if the team can score some more goals this season and win some games. However, their work is far from complete. The club last won a major trophy back in 1995; the FA Cup. What the club needs to do now is re-evaluate their gameplay, their players, and their management. If they do carry on with business as usual, we might see them relegated to the EFL Championship, but it’s too early to tell. We can only hope that Everton makes a full comeback next season to show why they are a talented team and then completely change their gameplay after their dismal results this season.

West Ham United: Jarrod Bowen in line for England debut – Sheringham

Sky Sports pundit Teddy Sheringham has claimed that Jarrod Bowen may get called up to the England national team, speaking in the build-up to the Hammers’ potentially season-defining clash with Sevilla.

The Lowdown: Bowen’s injury

Hammers fans looked on in worry as Bowen was substituted off during Saturday’s match against Liverpool, as their star man suffered an apparent heel injury.

The 25-year-old had to be helped down the tunnel by two of the Irons’ medical staff, igniting fears that the damage sustained could have potentially been quite serious, especially if it was anything around the achilles.

However, West Ham have now confirmed that the winger has not suffered any significant damage in the wake of the Liverpool defeat. This has sparked hopes of seeing an almost immediate return to action, with The Athletic claiming he could miss just one or two matches.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-developments-4/” title=”West Ham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Sheringham’s claim

Sheringham, who featured on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football show, has claimed that with Marcus Rashford’s poor form, Bowen is in line for a huge personal boost.

As quoted by football.london, he said: “Rashford is having a tough time at the moment, he can’t get in the Manchester United team and Jarrod Bowen has been on fire, scoring goals and making goals. There’s a case for him being picked in the England squad with Rashford coming out if you’re doing it on recent form. There is a chance that will happen.”

The Verdict: Boost for Bowen

Getting selected for England would come as a huge boost for Bowen and his confidence, as he is clearly becoming one of the top attacking talents in the Premier League. Shining on the international stage is the obvious next step, following in the footsteps of Declan Rice.

The effect on West Ham will only be positive in the short-term too. The 25-year-old will be full of confidence heading into the Hammers’ round 16 fixtures of the Europa League against Sevilla, even if he only features in the second leg.

Bowen’s electric form, which has seen him become West Ham’s top scorer and assister this season, could carry on until the end of the campaign if he can recover quickly and play with a place in the eventual World Cup squad on the line, aiding the Irons in the push for a top four place this season.

Man City: Laporte set to step up for Dias

Aymeric Laporte is set to undertake a big role for Manchester City in Ruben Dias’ absence over the coming weeks, with Pep Guardiola expected to start the Spaniard in tonight’s clash against Crystal Palace.

The Lowdown: Dias struck by injury

Ahead of the recent derby against Manchester United, the City manager announced that the Portugal defender had suffered a hamstring injury against Peterborough in the FA Cup and would likely be sidelined for four to six weeks.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/man-city-latest-developments-2/” title=”Man City latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

This came as a huge blow for City, as it meant they were set to be without their star defender for the majority of their remaining league fixtures, with Liverpool currently just three points behind them in the Premier League table.

The Latest: Big role for Laporte

After Laporte was dropped last season following a disappointing performance against Tottenham, John Stones came in to form a dominant partnership with Dias, which proved formidable for the rest of the season.

This left the Spain international out of favour under Guardiola, but in the wake of a positive Euro 2020 campaign with La Roja, the 27-year-old has forced his way back into his manager’s plans at club level.

More recently, Dias’ injury has led to an increase in Laporte’s role in the squad, and as per Manchester Evening News reporter Simon Bajkowski, he is set to retain his role in the starting XI for tonight’s trip to Crystal Palace.

Guardiola said of the Spain defender: “He deserves his minutes. Nathan [Ake] is coming back but Ruben will be a long time so he is still weeks away from coming back. We need Ayme fresh and in the best condition possible.”

The Verdict: Laporte now needs to step up

This opportunity for Laporte hasn’t come without warning from Guardiola. Whilst claiming that the defender is the perfect age to improve, the 51-year-old has said that the centre-back must be willing to learn in the absence of the former Benfica man.

Since his arrival at City, Dias has proven to be an integral part of Guardiola’s plans, being named the Football Writers’ Player of the Year for 2020/21. Consequently, the battle for a centre-back starting berth has been tough to secure, with Nathan Ake joining Stones and Laporte in the fight to partner the 24-year-old Portugal star.

The £120,000-per-week Spain defender has been a regular at the Etihad this season, starting 23 Premier League games, but the three aforementioned centre-backs have all posted higher WhoScored ratings over the campaign. Therefore, Laporte must seize this chance to prove to his manager that he can fill the void left by Dias’ absence.

Wolves: Willy Boly struggled against Leeds

Wolverhampton Wanderers were subjected to a shock comeback by Leeds United at Molineux on Friday night as Bruno Lage’s side squandered a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2.

First-half goals from Jonny Otto and Francisco Trincao had the hosts on course for a third consecutive victory in the Premier League before Raul Jimenez’s red card completely turned the game, with goals from Jack Harrison, Rodrigo and Luke Ayling completing a sensational comeback for Jesse Marsch’s team.

The defeat is a major dent in Wolves’ hopes of securing European football for next season, with the performance certainly being a disappointment, and the display of Willy Boly was particularly under par in the West Midlands.

The centre-back has had a wretched time with injury, having made his first Premier League appearance of the season against Watford recently, with Friday being just his second top-flight outing in 2021/22.

However, according to SofaScore, the Frenchman gave the ball away on 18 occasions, and having had 71 touches, he lost possession once every 3.9 touches in what was a disappointing performance.

Moreover, the 31-year-old maintained a pass completion rate of 75% and completed just three out of 13 attempted long balls, a success rate of 23%. From a defensive point of view, there was little to boast about either, with the defender making just one tackle and one interception whilst failing to record a single block.

However, one positive was that Boly won over half of his duels, with a 54% success rate.

Of course, the Frenchman wasn’t the only player to contribute a below-par showing on Friday night as Wolves threw away a fantastic chance to climb into sixth and put pressure on Tottenham and West Ham once again.

The defeat now keeps them in eighth ahead of the remaining Premier League matches, with Spurs having two games in hand and a two-point advantage, leaving the Old Gold’s European hopes dangling by a thread.

It would have been particularly disappointing to see Boly struggle after a long period out of action, with the defender certainly being a fan favourite at Molineux. The 31-year-old was a kingpin in Wolves’ promotion season in 2017/18 and has since gone on to make 81 appearances in the top flight for the Black Country outfit.

Wolves’ defence has been largely excellent season, with Lage’s men conceding just 26 goals in 30 matches, the fourth-best record in the Premier League.

It will be a record that the manager will be keen to preserve for the remainder of the campaign, but it appears as though Boly could harm the team’s chances of maintaining such a fine concession rate.

The regular trio of Conor Coady, Romain Saiss and Max Kilman have formed an impressive alliance as the season has progressed. However, Kilman was relegated to the bench against Leeds, and that now appears to have been a costly error by Lage.

With eight games to go, the West Midlands outfit will need to put an excellent run together in order to ensure that they will be playing in European competition next season, and to that end they will require better performances than what Boly delivered last night. Unfortunately, the 31-year-old failed the test presented to him by his manager upon being thrown into the team against Leeds.

Phil Hay expects Raphinha to move on

Leeds United supporters need to accept that Raphinha will move on at some point in the near future, according to reliable journalist Phil Hay.

The Lowdown: Raphinha exit talk

Leeds-related news has been dominated by talk of the Brazilian’s future in recent weeks, with the player strongly linked with a move to Barcelona, and some reports that a deal has already been agreed with the Catalan giants.

The 25-year-old is Leeds’ top scorer in the Premier League this season, netting nine times and standing out as comfortably his team’s greatest attacking threat.

It remains to be seen if Raphinha will still be at Elland Road next season, and Hay has provided his thoughts on the situation.

[freshpress-quiz id=“383507″]

The Latest: Hay offers Raphinha insight

Writing in his mailbag for The Athletic on Monday, the reliable journalist said that the winger won’t be around forever, even though there has been hope over him signing a new deal. He stated:

“First things first, Barcelona are very much interested in him. In terms of future destinations for Raphinha, they were always a prime candidate – partly because of their standing and partly because of the very strong link between the Catalan club and his agent, Deco, who spent four years there as a player in the early 2000s. What we can say at this stage is that they have not submitted any offers to Leeds.

“Around Christmas, Victor Orta and Deco met at least twice and there was plenty of optimism about Raphinha agreeing new terms. Very little has been said since then and common sense tells you that both Leeds’ brush with relegation and the change of head coach at Elland Road will have dissuaded the player from rushing into signing a longer deal. He knows he is sought-after.

“I get the feeling that the club and the fanbase are realistic enough to accept that the 25-year-old Brazilian is a player who will move on to bigger things at some stage.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-40/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Expect him to leave

Some players simply come to the end of their cycle at a club, outgrowing it before moving to a team more suitable to the level that they have reached.

That appears to be the case with Raphinha, who has matured into a wonderful footballer, already scoring three times in his first seven appearances for Brazil and being hailed as ‘phenomenal’ by Rio Ferdinand.

Should Leeds be relegated to the Championship, there is simply no doubt that Raphinha will leave, but that may well apply even if Jesse Marsch’s side remain in the Premier League.

Devlin hails Celtic’s defensive display

Celtic’s superb defensive performance was the most impressive aspect of their massive 2-1 derby win on Sunday, according to journalist Kieran Devlin.

The Lowdown: Celtic enjoy huge win

The Hoops knew how enormous three points at Ibrox would be on Sunday afternoon, even though avoiding defeat was the primary objective.

Ange Postecoglou’s side went one better than that, recovering from an early deficit to seal a priceless victory thanks to goals from Tom Rogic and Cameron Carter-Vickers.

In the second half, Celtic defended for their lives as Rangers desperately tried to find an equaliser, the visitors putting their bodies on the line and making countless blocks.

The Latest: Devlin hails Celtic defence

Taking to Twitter on Monday as he shared a corresponding article from The Athletic, Devlin lauded the defensive performance and character on show from Celtic at Ibrox, saying:

“This Celtic get due praise as entertainers, but their other face deserves credit. That of scoring late winners, grinding out hard results, matching Livingston’s physicality, defending their box to the last man at Ibrox. Yesterday was about their character.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-23/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Defence was crucial

Devlin is right to focus on the brilliance of Celtic’s defensive work on Sunday, with Postecoglou’s men producing a heroic effort, both as a team and individually.

The likes of Carter-Vickers and Carl Starfelt were particularly brilliant at the back, making a combined 20 clearances and six interceptions according to Sofascore, which sums up their Herculean efforts in defence.

Titles can be effectively won on such days with performances of that ilk, and if the Hoops go on to clinch Premiership glory next month, this win at Ibrox will perhaps be seen as the most pivotal day of the campaign.

Liverpool set sights on Raphinha

Taking to Twitter, journalist Gianluigi Longari has made a midweek transfer claim as Liverpool eye Leeds United star Raphinha.

The Lowdown: Raphinha future in doubt?

The Brazilian has been heavily linked with a move away from Elland Road recently with much deliberation over the player’s various release clauses.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/liverpool-newest-updates/” title=”Liverpool newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Leeds have apparently inserted two release clauses in Raphinha’s contract, one worth €75 million (£63m) if they stay up this season, and one worth €25 million (£21m) if they’re relegated.

Jesse March’s side look set for a battle to keep their star attacker this season but, as explained by Longari, the great relationship between Raphinha’s camp and Leeds could potentially ease his summer exit saga.

The Latest: Liverpool in mix…

Taking to Twitter, the Italian journalist explains that Jurgen Klopp’s side are in the mix to sign Raphinha alongside Barcelona and Manchester United.

He explained:

“Excellent relationship between Raphinha camp and Leeds. The two parties will agree on an exit figure without any tension excluding the figures stipulated on clauses. Barcelona leading the race. Manchester United And Liverpool also interested.”

The Verdict: A must-win battle?

The South American, called ‘incredible’ by pundit and former Elland Road forward Noel Whelan, has apparently blown away Anfield officials who have kept close tabs on Raphinha this season (Football Insider).

Much could depend on Leeds’ chances of survival, though, with it being arguably unlikely that Fenway Sports Group invest £63m into his release clause so soon after signing Luis Diaz from FC Porto for an initial £37m.

Villa: Italian source makes Luiz claim

According to a report from AS Roma Live (via Sport Witness), the Serie A club remain interested in Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz.

The lowdown: Luiz is a wanted man

The 23-year-old has previously been indexed with a move to Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United (Birmingham Mail).

Despite the speculation, the former Manchester City academy starlet has remained a regular feature for the Villans this season, making 27 appearances across all competitions.

A fresh report from Italy has claimed that there is strong interest on the Brazilian from further afield…

The latest: Jose Mourinho keen on Luiz

As per the report from AS Roma Live, as translated by Sport Witness, Roma’s admiration for Luiz has ‘never completely disappeared’.

It is stated that the five-cap Brazil international is ‘not the happiest’ at Villa Park, having not been rewarded with a new contract.

Indeed, recent comments from Gerrard confirming that talks over a new deal for the Brazilian aren’t forthcoming are believed to have been viewed as a ‘green light’ by Roma.

The verdict: Secure him at all costs

Valued at £31.5m and into the final 18 months of a contract in the Midlands (Transfermarkt), the club would certainly be best served to tie down the midfield general to fresh terms sooner rather than later.

Described as a ‘clever’ operator on the ball by Pep Guardiola, Luiz has formed an impressive partnership alongside John McGinn whilst completing 86% of his passes this season, earning an overall performance rating of 6.93 from Sofascore.

Given the levels of interest in Luiz’s services, without a new deal it’s difficult to envisage a summer without strong renewed interest; and as things stand, Villa may be forced to cash in on the Brazilian, perhaps even to a Premier League rival.
