Tom Smith hit an unbeaten 42 as Lancashire beat Scotland by seven wickets in a rain-hit Yorkshire Bank 40 contest in Glasgow. The visitors reached their target of 125 in the 24th over with 28 balls to spare.Scotland had posted 145 before being bowled out with two balls left of their scheduled 36 overs. Rain delayed the start and the first break came with Scotland on 20 without loss after four overs.Scotland had not added to their total before another shower delayed matters five balls later and Freddie Coleman was bowled out by Kabir Ali for 8 when the teams returned.Hamish Gardiner was soon caught out for 12 but Richie Berrington and Preston Mommsen, with 31 not out, both steadied the home side before Calvin Burnett hit 25 from 17 balls. Burnett’s impressive cameo incorporated five boundaries, including three fours in succession, before Ali bowled him out to take his third wicket. After another rain delay early in Lancashire’s innings, Burnett took the first wicket for Scotland with the visitors on 26 in the sixth over as Gordon Goudie caught Stephen Moore’s drive to short cover with the batsman on 18. But Moore’s fellow opener, Smith, stayed in until the end of play as Lancashire recorded a comfortable win with Ashwell Prince also on form with 36 from as many balls as they chased the target largely untroubled.

Victor Ferraz contesta expulsão e vê jogo 'duro' diante do River Plate-URU

Zimbabwe aim to stall Bangladesh's Bulawayo success story

Preview of the first ODI between Zimbabwe and Bangladesh in Bulawayo

Big PictureAs it had been before the Test series, Bangladesh are slightly ahead of Zimbabwe leading up to the ODI series in terms of form, recent results and experience. But the 1-1 scoreline after nine absorbing days in Harare means the “favourites on paper” theory is not applicable to these two teams.Mushfiqur Rahim’s side should carry some momentum from the 143-run win in the second Test. The most encouraging sign for them has been the middle-order bouncing back from a wretched time in the first match. Mushfiqur, Shakib Al Hasan and Nasir Hossain have scored two fifties each, while Tamim Iqbal has shown he can still bring out his A-game despite a thumb injury. The visitors’ bowling too has more edge to it. Robiul Islam was adjudged Man of the Series for his 15 wickets, brought mostly through accuracy and the regular use of the outswinger. He will have to bring a bit more of his skills into this format, one he hasn’t played yet at international level. Robiul is expected to make his debut alongside Shamsur Rahman, who’s likely to open with Tamim at some stage of the limited-overs leg of the tour.Zimbabwe have April 17 to 20 to look back at. They crushed Bangladesh by 335 runs in those four days, with superb showing from captain Brendan Taylor and quick Kyle Jarvis. The likes of Malcolm Waller, Graeme Cremer and Shingi Masakadza also had important roles to play in the win. There were several positives in that game, and they would do well to bring that attitude into this ODI series. They have a poor record at the Queens Sports Club against Bangladesh, though, winning two out of eight completed games. They have two legspinners in the squad in Natsai Mushangwe and Tino Mutombodzi, and that could be prove to be an advantage over Bangladesh this time around. The first game of the ODI series promises much, simply because both sets of players mostly have attacking mindsets. Though Bangladesh have won and drawn the two ODI series they have played this season, Zimbabwe are their closest rival in the international game and hence there is bound to be nerves.Form guideZimbabwe: LLLLL (completed games, most recent results first)
Bangladesh: WLWLLPlayers to watchA century in the second Test was a much-needed boost for Hamilton Masakadza. He was forceful during the unbeaten 111 too, and the same would be expected of him in the first ODI; Zimbabwe would be keen to see their No. 3 get some runs, given their openers’ ordinary scores off late.A Man-of-the-Series performance in the Test series is enough to win Robiul Islam his first ODI cap. He has been a revelation on the tour so far, and will be expected to bring out the same levels of accuracy in the ODIs.Team newsRegis Chakabva could continue opening with Vusi Sibanda, though Sikandar Raza has been kept in the squad. Legspinner Natsai Mushangwe was impressive in the West Indies, and is likely to play ahead of Prosper Utseya, while Brian Vitori could also make a comeback.Zimbabwe (possible) 1 Vusi Sibanda, 2 Regis Chakabva/Sikandar Raza, 3 Hamilton Masakadza, 4 Brendan Taylor (capt & wk), 5 Malcolm Waller, 6 Sean Williams, 7 Elton Chigumbura, 8 Natsai Mushangwe, 9 Shingi Masakadza, 10 Kyle Jarvis, 11 Brian Vitori.Opener Jahurul Islam’s ordinary run in the Test series could see him make way for newcomer Shamsur Rahman, who could make his ODI debut alongside Robiul Islam. It would be tempting to play three seamers, in which case Mahmudullah could miss out.Bangladesh (possible) 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Shamsur Rahman, 3 Mohammad Ashraful, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim (capt & wk), 5 Shakib Al Hasan, 6 Nasir Hossain, 7 Mahmudullah/Ziaur Rahman, 8 Sohag Gazi, 9 Abdur Razzak, 10 Shafiul Islam, 11 Robiul Islam.Pitch and conditionsBeing Bangladesh’s happy hunting ground, the Bulawayo pitch must be more like those produced in the subcontinent; it will remain slow and may turn later in the game. The cooler climate will make it a more pleasant affair for both teams.Stats and trivia Bangladesh have won in Bulawayo six times in 10 ODIs. Level with England, they are most successful visiting team at this venue The last ODI century by a Zimbabwe player was 18 months ago, by Brendan Taylor. He has scored the last five tons for his country in this format Shakib Al Hasan and Abdur Razzak are the highest run-getter and wicket-taker in Zimbabwe-Bangladesh ODIsQuotes”The start is important, so we need to do well in the first game. We have great memories of Bulawayo, so we will do well there.”
“Our top four batters have got the potential to score hundreds and that is big for us. We have got some quality, experienced spinners like they have. In the West Indies I think our bowlers bowled really well and contained some dynamic batsmen so we can take a lot out of that.”

We do it the hard way – Prior

Matt Prior is adamant that England are capable of recovering from another poor batting display to still emerge with a series win against New Zealand

Matt Prior is adamant that England are capable of recovering from another poor batting display to still emerge with a series win against New Zealand. There was something for them to cling to in the closing stages of the third day in Auckland as they reduced New Zealand to 8 for 3 after they had not been asked to follow-on, but the home side’s lead still stands at an imposing 274.In a manic 13-over period at the end of England’s innings and start of New Zealand’s second, seven wickets fell for 12 runs. However, the defining passage of the day came much earlier as England slumped to 72 for 5 in the morning session against a swinging ball that they failed to cope with. Of their final total of 204, 101 came in a partnership between Prior and Joe Root, which shows the paucity of what else was on offer.England are now starring at only their second series defeat in New Zealand unless they can chase down a large total – the highest successful chase at Eden Park is 345 – or bat out time to leave the contest at 0-0. Prior, who has had an impressive match with bat and gloves, tried to keep a sense of perspective about the situation.”I know it feels like the world’s over, but it’s not really,” he said. “We’ve got some very good cricketers who can put in match-winning, or match-saving performances. The thing I love about this team is we might do it the hard way, but we fight – and we keep fighting.”We’ve shown that in Dunedin and in Nagpur. These are memories we’ll pull out and use, and know we have the skill and ability to get something out of this game still.”We’re now in a position where we’re going to need a bit of luck and a lot of skill. But if we can get early wickets, who knows? It’s still a good deck. We’re going to have to bat a lot better, obviously, but we can chase these runs.”This was the second poor first innings that England have put together in the series following their 167 in Dunedin. There was not quite the same gifting of wickets this time – although Prior and Stuart Broad both played loose shots – but English batsmen should be able to combat the moving ball.”It’s not like everyone feels like they’re a walking wicket at the moment,” Prior said. “We’ve had a couple of bad days, and it’s certainly something we need to address – and we will do. We’re going to get another chance in the second innings. That in a funny way is a good thing. You get straight back on the horse.”The key for New Zealand was the pressure they built on England’s batsmen – the innings run rate was below two until Prior upped the tempo before the second new ball only to carve to point four deliveries before it was due. Tim Southee and Trent Boult were exemplary, something Prior was keen to acknowledge.”I know Trent ended up with the most wickets, but I thought Tim Southee bowled a couple of very good spells. Hats off to the New Zealand bowlers.”New Zealand’s grip on the contest was challenged when they did not enforce the follow-on, Brendon McCullum following the preferred route these days of not sending a side straight back with a view to giving his bowlers a breather, but they remain one good session away from being almost impregnable.”To get a rest then look to use the next two days was pretty crucial,” Boult said. “We need to push on tomorrow – 30 for 3 wasn’t in the plan but to have a 280-run lead is a pretty good position. There were a couple of signs of a bit of up and down going on, so that’s pretty exciting to see from a bowling point of view.”New Zealand have not won a home Test series against anyone other than Zimbabwe or Bangladesh since beating West Indies in 2005-06. Victory here, on the back of the South Africa tour and the captaincy controversy, could be a defining moment for these players.

Narine calls Sehwag his toughest opponent

Sunil Narine said he was relieved about not bowling to Virender Sehwag in the opening match of IPL 2013

Sunil Narine believes his success for Kolkata Knight Riders can also be attributed to Gautam Gambhir’s captaincy•BCCI

If his four-wicket haul against Delhi Daredevils is any indication, Sunil Narine may have begun IPL 2013 in the same form as last year. But his good form aside, the Kolkata Knight Riders’ bowler said he was relieved about not bowling to Virender Sehwag in the opening match of the IPL 2013.”Sehwag is the batsman against whom I’ve found things most difficult while bowling,” Narine said in the . “Irrespective of the situation, he goes on playing in his own style, which is to keep on scoring runs at a brisk pace.”The lead bowler for Kolkata Knight Riders, Narine believes his success is also the result of playing with a captain who knows how to use his talent.”Gautam [Gambhir] has a good idea of the game, which guides him to use me properly in different situations of the game,” he said. He also said he enjoyed bowling at the death, as it gave him a chance of picking up more wickets. “You can either go for plenty of runs or take wickets. It presents you with an opportunity to shine for your team.”While his performances have been consistent in ODIs and T20s, Narine hasn’t really established himself as Test player. He played just five Tests since his debut against England in Birmingham last year, and was dropped for the recent Test series against Zimbabwe, as the West Indies selectors opted for Shane Shillingford. Narine believes he can make his mark in the longer format. “Now as far as I’m concerned, I am comfortable bowling with both white and red balls. The amount of success I’ve attained with the white ball, so far, may give an impression that I’m useful in the shorter format.”
