Steven Finn has boosted his chances of playing in the third Test against India with an impressive display on the first day of the England Performance Programme’s game against the D Y Patil Academy XI in Navi Mumbai.Finn, who missed the first two Tests after sustaining a thigh strain during the opening warm-up match of the tour, claimed 4 for 50*, including a wicket in his first over, and worked up a considerable pace. If Finn suffers no reaction to his workload, he has an excellent chance of forcing his way into the England team for Kolkata in place of an out of sorts Stuart Broad, who has not claimed a wicket in the first two Tests.Finn bowled four spells of four overs each and left the field on several occasions, but appeared untroubled by the exertion. As well as the wickets, he struck one batsman a painful blow on the hand and generated bounce from a sleepy surface that other bowlers struggled to find.Earlier in the day England’s bowling coach, David Saker, had hinted that a fully fit Finn would prove hard to ignore for the England selectors. “If he gets through unscathed and bowls well, his name will definitely be talked about for selection,” Saker said. “He’s got that x-factor, a bit of pace, that height that always means you could get variable bounce over here. So his name will be bandied around for sure for that second seamer’s spot.”In contrast, Saker was less effusive about Broad. “There’s a little bit of an issue, there’s no doubt about it,” he said. “He hasn’t bowled as we would have liked, and he’d be the first to admit that. He’s not the first bowler to come over here and find it hard.”Four other members of England’s Test squad – Graham Onions, Joe Root, Stuart Meaker and Eoin Morgan – are also playing in the three-day match. Simon Kerrigan, the Lancashire left-arm spinner, claimed 4 for 61 with Meaker (1-34) beating the bat often without much luck. Legspinner Scott Borthwick took the other wicket.Onions finished wicketless, but conceded only 11 runs from his 14 overs which included six maidens. Later Root compiled an unbeaten 40 off 57 balls as the EPP team began their reply while Varun Chopra had been dismissed.November 27, 2.15pm: *Steven Finn’s bowling figures were corrected

'We're on top' – Ross Taylor

Ross Taylor, the New Zealand captain, believes his team remains on top in the first Test against West Indies despite two late wickets from Sunil Narine

Ross Taylor, the New Zealand captain, believes his team remains on top in the first Test against West Indies despite two late wickets from Sunil Narine. New Zealand ended the day at 232 for 4 but a few overs earlier they had been 223 for 2, before Darren Sammy’s decision to stick with the old ball paid off when Narine bowled Taylor for 45 and then denied a century to Martin Guptill, who skied a catch to mid-on for 97.The breakthroughs took some of the gloss off an impressive day for New Zealand, whose batting in the warm-up match on the same ground was disappointing. But on a pitch that is expected to become more difficult for batting as the match wears on, Taylor said he was happy with the way the New Zealanders had performed on the first day of the series.”I think we’re on top,” Taylor said. “I’m sure they would have liked to have got a few more wickets. I guess the momentum shift a little bit, getting two wickets with myself and Guptill, they would have been a little bit more happy with the day. But I think we’re on top and it’s going to be a hard batting track out there in the third and fourth innings, so we need to score a lot of runs in this first innings.”It’s not a total [that is our target]. It’s more if we can still be batting … at tea we’ll have a sufficient total on the board. It is quite hot out there and hopefully we can keep them out there as long as possible, all going well.”Taylor was especially pleased with the way the openers, Guptill and Daniel Flynn, fought through the new ball to put on 97 for the first wicket. It was just the second time in eight years that a New Zealand opening pair had reached lunch on the first day of a Test with their wickets intact, and it was all the more impressive given that Flynn batted through illness.”They batted very well,” Taylor said. “Flynny was a bit sick out there and he gutsed it out, and he scored a good 40 and it’s not often our opening partnerships go wicketless in the first session, so that’s a positive for us and hopefully they can continue to do that. [Flynn had] just a sore tummy. He was spewing up and things.”Eventually, both openers fell to the spin of Narine, who ended the day with 3 for 73, including his first wicket in Test cricket. He bowled 28 overs and Taylor said the batsmen had found him easier to handle than in the limited-overs games, despite his late wickets.”Red ball and white ball are totally different,” he said. “Red ball, we don’t have to go after him, he has to come and get us. With the white ball we have to attack him and it showed today that if you sit on him, he goes searching. He picked up a couple of wickets towards the end there, but I thought the way we played him was very good and if we can continue that good work then we can get a sizeable total tomorrow.”Narine said it had been hard work for the bowlers on the first day, but West Indies were happy with how the day had ended.”It’s a very good wicket to bat on,” Narine said. “I think once you put down your head and but I don’t think it’s much of a problem. There’s a little bounce and turn in the wicket but you still have to pitch the ball in the right areas. We’re happy the way the day has finished. The way New Zealand started it could have been worse. So we’ll take this and come out fighting tomorrow.”

Pietersen reveals England u-turn

Kevin Pietersen has opened the door for an England comeback in limited-overs international cricket, admitting he would “love to play for another three or four years in all forms of cricket”

Kevin Pietersen has sensationally opened the door for an England comeback in limited-overs international cricket, admitting he would “love to play for another three or four years in all forms of cricket.”It is understood that Pietersen’s representative privately met ECB officials to discuss a return on Thursday night. Pietersen is also thought to have met Hugh Morris, the managing director of England cricket, earlier in the week.Asked whether negotiations into his England return in all three forms of the game were ongoing, Pietersen replied: “I think so.”Pietersen did not disguise his discontent with the way he has been managed by England, matters that would surely have to be resolved if he was to make a smooth return into the England side.He complained that he had “never been looked after” by the England management and insisted that his schedule would have to be eased before he consented to a return.Pietersen, speaking moments after he finished the third day of Surrey’s Championship match at Guildford unbeaten on 234, reiterated his desire to be included in England’s World Twenty20 squad in Sri Lanka in September. The selectors meet this weekend to pick a 30-man preliminary squad for the tournament and must submit it to the ICC on July 18. England enter the tournament as defending champions.Pietersen retired from limited-overs international cricket at the end of May. While he wanted only to retire from the 50-over game and to continue to play T20 cricket, the terms of England central contracts state that for a player to be considered for either format of limited-overs cricket, they must be available for both.”I’ve always said I want to play in the T20,” Pietersen said. “But I needed to get away from the schedule. I cannot keep playing every single day’s cricket. I’ve never been looked after. I cannot keep playing every warm-up game, I cannot keep practising every single day. There comes a time when I know what I need to do to be successful. I’ve got a young family and I cannot be on the treadmill all day every day.”I’ve said before that, if the schedule was right, if they could sort my schedule out, I would love to play for another three or four years in all forms of cricket. But the schedule at the moment is a nightmare.”Morris was an influential figure when Pietersen lost his job as England captain more than three years ago after a breakdown in his relationship with England’s coach at the time, Peter Moores, broke down. Moores was also sacked.England’s unease will be all the greater because Andy Flower, England’s director of cricket, has referred to similar tensions in balancing his professional and personal life because of the proliferation of international cricket.

McKenzie stars in another Hampshire thriller

Hampshire will have an opportunity to win their second Friends Life t20 title in three seasons after a dramatic victory over Nottinghamshire

Hampshire will have an opportunity to win their second Friends Life t20 title in three seasons after a dramatic victory over Nottinghamshire sent them to a third consecutive Finals Day. Neil McKenzie, who had been woefully out of form in the competition until this evening, was the man largely responsible for squeezing an improbable victory from a match that appeared to have slipped away from them, finishing 79 not out from 49 balls. The 36-year-old South African – Hampshire’s star when they beat Somerset in the final two years ago – stole the glory from Samit Patel, whose 60 and three wickets looked likely to be the match-winning performance after Hampshire began the 17th over still needing 46 runs with six wickets down. But against a relatively inexperienced Nottinghamshire attack, lacking the injured Darren Pattinson and, of course, with Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann unavailable, McKenzie and his captain, the equally wordly Dimitri Mascarenhas, found a way to do what was needed. This was despite McKenzie pulling up lame after two balls of the final over, requiring James Vince to run for him with 11 still needed off what remained. Remarkably, he hit two consecutive fours on one leg, before more confusion ensued with the next ball. Carter’s attempt to run out McKenzie’s runner at the non-striker’s end failed, even though he hit the stumps, but his effort to hit the other set kept the ball live and allowed Mascarenhas to get back for a second. This levelled the scores, which meant that McKenzie had only to survive the last ball to win the match on fewer wickets lost. In the event, he pushed the ball through the infield and it ran away for four as Nottinghamshire accepted their fate. Hampshire know already they will face Somerset in their semi-final in Cardiff on August 25.It was tough luck on Nottinghamshire, who wound up relying on 23-year-old Andy Carter and 21-year-old Jake Ball to bowl under enormous pressure at the end. Neither has the benefit of many games under his belt and Ball – nephew of former England wicketkeeper Bruce French – had only bowled one over in the format before this match.McKenzie had stepped up the pressure by lifting Harry Gurney over the leg-side field into the Fox Road stand for six and Ball went for 11 in the 18th over, although it was by no means a poor one. Merely Mascarenhas had too much know-how.Another six off Gurney by McKenzie in the 19th effectively swung the game Hampshire’s way, leaving a heavy responsibility on Carter that ultimately proved too much.Nottinghamshire could not quite believe how the match had slipped away from them, particularly after Patel’s third over had claimed the wickets of Sean Ervine, well caught on the boundary by Alex Hales, and the dangerous Glenn Maxwell, who was stumped second ball. At that point, Hampshire were 78 for 5 in the tenth over, still 101 short of their target, and with Jimmy Adams, James Vince and Simon Katich all out of the picture too.As Patel ecstatically celebrated his third wicket, when Liam Dawson fell for 30, to another catch in the deep in the 16th over, the odds still seemed to be stacked in the home side’s favour. But McKenzie, whose six previous innings in this year’s competition had netted 47 runs in total, had other ideas.Nottinghamshire’s total had taken some hard work to accumulate on a pitch offering little pace on to the bat. They had started badly, losing Hales to the second ball of the match, which was a bit of a comedown after the 99 he made for England in the Twenty20 international against West Indies in front of a similar crowd on this ground last month. The setback was corrected, after a fashion, as Riki Wessels launched an extraordinary assault on Mascarenhas that yielded 18 runs from the first four hits of the second over before the next flew up in the air and landed in the hands of Danny Briggs at third man.Sanity returned in the third over and on a surface that was exploited for the most part pretty effectively by Hampshire’s bowlers, particularly Dawson and Briggs, Nottinghamshire never enjoyed another over so productive. Briggs conceded only two boundaries in his four overs and the wicket of Adam Voges in the last of those was richly deserved. To anyone in the crowd of 11,127 who had seen Scott Styris blast Sussex into Finals Day on Tuesday evening, Michael Lumb’s 39 off 32 balls and Voges’s 33 off 26 probably seemed a little pedestrian. Fluent strokeplay was never easy, however, and it was telling that the four overs immediately after the Powerplay phase added only 23 runs.By that point, 80-3 after ten, Nottinghamshire had suffered another blow when James Taylor cut the offspinning allrounder Maxwell’s second delivery straight to the fielder at point. In the circumstances, Patel’s 60 off 33 balls was all the more commendable. Lumb departed off the second ball of the 11th over, caught at point off Mascarenhas, but Patel and Voges added 60 off the next seven overs, with Patel the first batsman to start finding the boundaries with the frequency needed to put pressure on the bowlers. There were no hugely high-scoring overs but after Voges, who was dropped by Maxwell at long-on on 23, ultimately holed out to long-off, the last two overs put on 30 runs, of which 17 came from Patel, who cleared the ropes for the only time in the 20th over before he was out attempting to do so again.

Ireland will host Bangladesh for three Twenty20 internationals in July, Cricket Ireland has confirmed. The teams had initially planned on playing an ODI series in Ireland but the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) requested a Twenty20 series instead, in order to prepare for the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka later in the year. The nine-day tour of Ireland will also include a practice game.”It’s great news that we’re taking on Bangladesh and the games will give us valuable preparation as we build towards the World Cup in Sri Lanka,” Ireland coach Phil Simmons said. “We played an exciting brand of cricket in winning the recent qualifying tournament in Dubai and we’re now eighth in the world rankings in this format of the game.””We are delighted to be able to bring more top quality cricket to Ireland. Hosting matches against the Full-Member countries is exactly what we are striving for and this summer proves we are on the right track with matches against Australia, South Africa A, Afghanistan and now Bangladesh,” Warren Deutrom, Cricket Ireland’s CEO, said. “I would also like to extend our sincere thanks to the ICC High Performance Programme and to ICC Europe for their financial support in helping make these matches come to fruition.”In addition, this is the first time ever we are playing T20I matches at home against a Test nation, and we fully intend to play the games at a time and a price to suit the post-work and weekend crowd.”The teams have faced each other just once in a T20I, at Trent Bridge in the 2009 ICC World Twenty20. All three matches this series will be held in Stormont, on July 18, 20 and 21. The warm-up game against an Ireland XI will be held on July 16.Ireland, in April, had submitted a proposal to the ICC, seeking to play 12 to 15 ODIs a year to recognise their rising standards.
