Aston Villa will be looking to end another January transfer window with a healthy number of new additions to their squad after bringing in the likes of Calum Chambers and Lucas Digne on permanent deals as well as loans for Philippe Coutinho and Robin Olsen.

With deadline day now underway, it seems as though the Midlands club may have a challenge on their hands to keep hold of one of their current players rather than looking at bringing any more new ones in.

What’s the news?

According to a recent report from The Athletic, Newcastle United are keen on signing Villa left-back Matt Targett before the January transfer window deadline.

Villa signed the full-back during the 2019 summer transfer window from fellow Premier League side Southampton in a deal worth a reported fee of around £11m.

Gerrard’s big mistake

Since then, the 26-year-old has gone on to make 89 appearances for the Midlands club across all competitions, scoring three goals and providing five assists along the way, highlighting how much of a key figure he has been for the Villans.

However, with the club bringing in Digne from Everton earlier this month for £25m, who has since taken Targett’s place in the team with two league starts under his belt already, it’s easy to see why the Englishman has now been linked with a late move away from Villa Park.

While a move away from Villa could be beneficial for Targett if he would be guaranteed regular game-time, it would be a calamity for the club to let him go halfway through the season in case Digne were to get injured and they ended up needing to rely on the £15.3m-rated defender to fill in.

Even though he may have been demoted to being Digne’s backup in recent weeks, it’s safe to say that Villa manager Steven Gerrard would still very much rather have Targett remain in his squad for the remainder of the season based on his useful defensive attributes. It would be a big mistake to let the 26-year-old leave and join another Premier League club, especially if Villa end up needing him at any point.

Após o fim do ano passado, com os títulos paulista e brasileiro, o técnico Fábio Carille fez apenas uma promessa para o Corinthians em 2018: uma equipe organizada. Se depender do primeiro teste do ano, o treinador é um homem de palavra. Com uma semana de pré-temporada, o Timão mostrou organização e venceu nos pênaltis o PSV (HOL) após empate por 1 a 1 no tempo regulamentar, na noite desta quarta-feira, pela Florida Cup. A equipe holandesa, que lidera o campeonato nacional, foi a campo com todos os titulares e está em meio de temporada – ou seja, melhor fisicamente.

Com o empate por 1 a 1, o jogo foi para os pênaltis para a disputa do ponto extra. O goleiro Caíque França pegou uma cobrança, e o Timão venceu por 5 a 4. Mas nada que mudasse a principal função da Florida Cup: fazer testes e ajustar a equipe. O Corinthians volta a jogar pelo torneio amistoso internacional no sábado, contra o Rangers (ESC), às 16h (de Brasília).

O Corinthians terminou 2017 no 4-2-3-1, mas Carille tem treinado desde o início de 2018 o 4-1-4-1 (como foi nos primeiros meses do ano passado). No novo esquema, com Rodriguinho e Jadson mais recuados iniciando as jogadas, o Corinthians teve qualidade nas saídas de bola e não ficou exposto.

Nem parecia que era o Corinthians que estava em início de temporada. A equipe brasileira rodou bem a bola, pouco sofreu atrás, mas também levou perigo em poucos lances ao PSV. O gol saiu com Rodriguinho, que aproveitou cobrança de falta perfeita de Jadson.

No ataque, Kazim mostrou o que a torcida corintiana já sabe: muita entrega, mas pouca qualidade. O gringo saiu da área para ajudar na armação, recebeu bastante bola e fez bem o pivô, mas errou demais. Ele perdeu boa chance após receber lindo lançamento de Rodriguinho, dominar de peito e escorregar na hora da finalização.

Na defesa, Fagner mostrou que quer brigar por uma vaga na Copa do Mundo. O lateral-direito ganhou a maioria das jogadas pelo seu setor e ainda foi bem no apoio ao ataque. Além dele, outro destaque foi Pedro Henrique, que substituiu bem Pablo.

O lateral-esquerdo Juninho Capixaba, único reforço titular, teve problemas na marcação. Por outro lado, deu um rolinho ainda aos 15 minutos e não se intimidou de ir ao ataque em sua estreia pelo Timão. Com a comissão técnica que prioriza a defesa, o jovem de 20 anos tem muito a evoluir.

O que deixou a desejar no Corinthians do primeiro tempo foi a bola aérea defensiva, um problema que já vem desde o ano passado. O PSV ganhou a maioria das jogadas pelo alto.

No segundo tempo, Carille trocou toda a equipe, enquanto o PSV fez apenas uma mudança. O Corinthians não conseguiu ficar com a bola no meio de campo e passou a ser pressionado.

O PSV levava perigo principalmente pelo lado direito da defesa corintiana, já que Léo Príncipe não esteve em uma boa noite. Nas bolas que chegaram, o goleiro Caíque mostrou que está pronto para ser o reserva imediato de Cássio. Foram três ótimas defesas e um pênalti defendido do jovem de 22 anos.

Caíque só não conseguiu defender o chute de Lammers, no último minuto de jogo. Após cruzamento (novamente e bola aérea atormentando) e confusão na área, o jogador ficou com a bola e chutou quase da pequena área para empatar.

Além do goleiro, o outro destaque do time reserva do Corinthians foi Júnior Dutra, mais um reforço que estreou. Ele se movimentou, participou das poucas jogadas no ataque e deu dois passes precisos. Vai colocar pressão em Kazim.

Marquinhos Gabriel e Giovanni Augusto, ambos que ainda nutrem esperança da comissão técnica corintiana, pouco fizeram. Guilherme Romão, de volta após empréstimo ao Oeste em 2017, não se destacou na lateral esquerda e começa abaixo do recém-contratado Juninho Capixaba.

No primeiro teste de 2018, Carille deve ter ficado satisfeito com a organização da equipe no segundo tempo. Mas o técnico sabe que o Corinthians ainda tem muito a melhorar ao longo da temporada.

Rueda ainda não se manifestou sobre essa indefinição toda e no Flamengo, os dirigentes estão confiantes na permanência do técnico que tem contrato com o clube até o fim de 2018.

Quem também falou sobre o caso há alguns dias, foi o auxiliar técnico de Rueda. Redín garantiu que os membros da comissão particular dele ainda não foram avisados sobre o futuro e que reunião nos primeiros dias de janeiro seriam importantes para a decisão do treinador.

Andy Blignaut is set to return to international cricket after a hiatus of almost five years after he was included in Zimbabwe’s squad for the World Twenty20 in West Indies.His inclusion completes a remarkable return by Blignaut, 31, who was one of the ‘rebel’ cricketers whose row with Zimbabwe’s cricket board resulted in the sacking of 15 senior white players in 2004. He subsequently returned to the side, and had been tipped as a potential national captain, but then walked out again in 2006 over after a disagreement about money owed to him by the board.Blignaut hinted at a possible comeback in January this year, and after his fitness had been assessed by the Matabeleland Tuskers franchise he returned to action in Zimbabwe’s domestic Twenty20 competition, striking 111 runs in four innings at an average of 37.00 and a strike rate of 133.73, including a matchwinning half century on his return to competitive cricket. He was then included in a provisional squad for Zimbabwe’s tour of the West Indies, but didn’t make the final touring party.The 15-man group also includes batsman Craig Ervine, the younger brother of former national player Sean Ervine, who has returned to Zimbabwe but is still tied to a contract with Hampshire. Shingi Masakadza and Stuart Matsikenyeri, who were both members of the Zimbabwe side that toured the West Indies in March, have not been included in the squad.Masakadza played in only one international game on the tour, taking two wickets in the final over of the second ODI in Guyana to set up a tense two-run win on his international debut. Borussia Monchengladbach’s Denis Zakaria ‘seems [Manchester] United bound’, according to The Birmingham Mail’s Ashley Preece. 

The lowdown

Zakaria will apparently be able to leave Gladbach this month for as little as £6million.

That’s because the 25-year-old’s contract is due to expire at the end of the current season, and it seems that the Bundesliga outfit are looking to cash in while they still can.

Zakaria is a Switzerland international who’s capable of operating as a defensive midfielder and as a centre-back.

Sport Bild journalist Christian Falk says United have ‘made an offer’ to the player’s camp and ‘would pay for a transfer in [the] winter’ rather than waiting until he’s a free agent.

The latest

In a fan Q & A, it was put to Preece that Aston Villa, on the hunt for a midfielder after an injury to Marvelous Nakamba, would ‘surely’ be in for Zakaria given his reported price tag.

But the journalist replied that Zakaria appears to be heading for Old Trafford, and so The Villans might have to focus on landing Brighton and Hove Albion’s Yves Bissouma instead.

The verdict

This update is really exciting for United fans. Data from FBRef.com shows that Zakaria is stylistically similar to West Ham United’s Declan Rice, producing a high volume of interceptions, blocks and dribbles.

Indeed, as of 11 January, only RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol boasted a higher dribbling success rate in the Bundesliga (among those who had attempted 30 or more).

Rice has been labelled a ‘priority target’ for The Red Devils, but David Moyes has indicated that West Ham would demand more than £100million.

Zakaria, who was dubbed ‘incredible’ by his former manager Marco Rose, could be a considered a bargain alternative at just a seven-figure fee.

Tournament heavyweights Delhi Daredevils crashed to a 98-run defeat against an inspired Mumbai Indians outfit that seemed determined to set the lopsided head-to-head record straight and, in the process, went to the top of the points table. Quickfire sixties from Sachin Tendulkar and Saurabh Tiwary took Mumbai to an imposing 218 but a batting line-up capable of overhauling the biggest of targets was bowled out with more than three overs to spare.Delhi were already handicapped by the loss of Gautam Gambhir to a hamstring pull early in the match so it was up to the middle order to anchor a big chase. But the loss of a steadying hand in Gambhir showed up as the likes of Virender Sehwag and Tillakaratne Dilshan performed well below expectation. The backup for those heavyweights had little time in which to plot and execute a Yusuf Pathan-like counterattack.Dilshan began the chase on an audacious note by slapping the first ball over mid-off for four. It was an emphatic way to get off the mark after two consecutive ducks, and Delhi motored along at a rate marginally faster than Mumbai after three overs. Mumbai had to dislodge at least one of the opening duo of Dilshan and Virender Sehwag, and the first breakthrough came through Lasith Malinga in the fourth over. Mishra had Tendulkar caught at long-off by the substitute Yogesh Nagar, who was earlier in the news for pulling off a one-handed blinder at mid-off to get rid of Sanath Jayasuriya.
