Eixo Rio-São Paulo podemos mostrar o trabalho sempre, focados aqui.

A Vila sempre fez a diferença.

Dilshan, Mathews ready for captaincy – Sangakkara

Kumar Sangakkara has said that the Sri Lankan board should choose a long-term captain as his successor and not give someone a caretaker role

Kumar Sangakkara believes his decision to step down as captain is the right one for Sri Lanka•AFP

Kumar Sangakkara has said that the Sri Lankan board should choose a long-term captain as his successor and not give someone a caretaker role. Sangakkara said both Tillakaratne Dilshan and Angelo Mathews were ready for captaincy but said they should be given longer tenures if they are to be successful.”You have to look long term. Not just what is good for now. If you want to go for Dilshan, give him the confidence for a long term,” Sangakkara told ESPNcricinfo. “Don’t give the captaincy to Dilshan and say, ‘You are just going to be captain for a year and half.’ It’s not going to be good for him, for he is going to think, ‘My days are numbered anyway.’ And so it won’t be good for the team.”Both Dilshan and Angie [Angelo] are suitable. If they think Angie is too young then Dilshan will do a good job because he has these little touches for success. Anything he does on the field, he has this little knack. I don’t know whether he will be the long-term candidate with his age, but if he keeps himself fit he can easily play the next World Cup.”Or they can take the plunge with Angelo. That is where the selectors have to really make a call. Pressure will have to be shared, if they make a call and if things don’t go well in the first or second year, they will have to be strong that they made a good decision. They will have to put everything possible in to make sure the captain has everything to do a good job. If it doesn’t go well even after that, maybe you can re-evaluate.”Reflecting on his own decision to resign, Sangakkara admitted that it was partly selfish but said the majority of the decision was based on what he felt was good for Sri Lanka. “No matter how much I try to deny it, there is a lot of ‘me’ in that decision. Having said that a large part of the decision is what I think is the way forward for the team. The way forward is not as difficult as people make it out to be. Players come players go and so do captains. Yet teams progress. That is the natural progression.Sangakkara said the administrators had the good of Sri Lankan cricket at heart but should never do anything that affects the players. “You can have your administrative scuffles but when it comes to playing cricket, players should not get involved with administration unless it’s something that directly affects their performance. And administrators should never cross that line. If they can maintain that familiarity and at the same time the professional distance it would be great. It can go wrong. It has gone wrong at times.”Sangakkara said he took the decision to resign three months before the World Cup and that Mahela Jayawardene supported it. “I am not resigning because I am unhappy. I can do this for longer but I don’t think it’s the right thing for me or for the team. Another World Cup is coming up in four years. We think four years is a long time but suddenly you will realise two years have already gone and the system hasn’t changed. A new guy is appointed with hardly any time to lead the team.”Sangakkara said the decisions to phase out Sanath Jayasuriya and Chaminda Vaas were the most difficult ones he took as captain. “It was a very delicate situation because Sanath and Vaasy are legends. You need to be 100% sure you are making the right decision. Personal likes and dislikes have nothing to do with what’s best for the team. We are a family, but you have arguments, your problems – that’s the way it should be, else nothing constructive is going to work.”Sangakkara said age wasn’t the criterion to drop these players and that it was purely about performance and team combination. “Sanath and Vaasy missed selection [for the World Cup] by a whisker. It was unbiased: it’s not about age. If someone is performing and contributing to the value of the dressing room, nothing else matters. It was a never a case of, oh he is old.”

Quase no fim, oAilton me faz aquela jogada.

Estou bem no mata-mata, tenho cinco gols no campeonato.

E fui titular no Flamengo, São Paulo, Santos…

It's great to be back, says Mumbai's Muzumdar

Amol Muzumdar is back in Mumbai to play the Ranji Trophy, even if it is as the captain of Assam

Tariq Engineer24-Nov-2010

Once the man for all seasons for Mumbai, Amol Muzumdar, now Assam captain, is gearing up to take on his team-mates•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Amol Muzumdar is smiling, unable to help himself. He’s back in Mumbai to play the Ranji Trophy, even if it is as the captain of Assam. “It’s great to be back,” he told ESPNcricinfo during practice at the Mumbai Cricket Association ground [in Bandra, a suburb of Mumbai] two days before the defending Ranji Trophy champions were due to take on the Super League newcomers. He was greeted like an old friend as he walked through the clubhouse, catching up with the Mumbai players and indulging in some good-natured ribbing with Ajit Agarkar and Ramesh Powar. It was only when he walked into the visitors’ dressing room that the reality of the situation sank in.Muzumdar was once the man for all seasons for Mumbai. For 16 years, he plied his trade at the heart of India’s most demanding domestic side, winning eight Ranji Trophy titles and becoming the team’s leading run-scorer. But in August last year, he decided to leave the city he grew up in for Assam – then in the Ranji Plate division – after not being selected for the Buchi Babu tournament.”Yes, I said I could never imagine playing anywhere other than Mumbai, but things change. The way things unfolded, it made sense for me to leave.” Assam, he said, were desperate to get out of the Plate league, and they thought he was the person to help them do that. He admitted this game had “a different feeling” for him, but said he prepared for it like he would any other game. “I just try to play good cricket.”In his first season as Assam captain, Muzumdar helped his young side earn promotion to the upper tier, where, as it happens, they were drawn in the same group as his old team this season, along with other domestic heavyweights such as Delhi and Bengal. “The group has five Ranji Trophy champions. If we can survive in this group, then we belong here.”Assam have made a good start to their season, picking up six points from three games, and surprising Bengal by overhauling their first innings score of 562 for 6 in the last game. Yet Muzumdar has told his new team “they are here to learn” from the way Mumbai plays cricket. He said some of the players feel like they have accomplished their goal just by making it to the Super League – a far cry from Mumbai, who consider a season without a Ranji Trophy championship a failure. “Having to explain the difference between big dreams and small dreams is in itself a challenge.”The smile was widest when talking about his many happy memories of playing here. Naturally, they all involve winning. The sight of Ravi Shastri lifting the Ranji Trophy in his first season in 1993-94, after the city had gone 10 years without winning the tournament, is one that will always stay with him. “It was my debut season and I was happy to make some contributions,” he said. Muzumdar is being modest. What he calls “some contribution” includes making 260 on debut, still a record for the highest score by a debutant in first-class cricket, and a tournament average of 164.66. Not bad for a 19-year old.He also mentioned the 2006-07 season, his first as captain, when Mumbai were in danger of not even making it to the knockout stage. “There will never be another year like that. It was up and down, like a rollercoaster. We lost our first three matches, no points on the table. We had to win the next four matches with four bonus points. We won the next four matches with four bonus points to reach the semi-finals. Then being bowled out for 233 in the first innings [against Baroda]. Being 0 for 5 in the second innings.”There was so much pressure,” he says shaking his head. “It puts a big smile on my face to think about it.” In the end, you can take the cricketer out of Mumbai, but you can’t take Mumbai out of the cricketer.

South Africa look to zero in on World Cup combination

South Africa know that Pakistan present them with an unpredictable challenge and they want to use the series as a way of testing their skills against a subcontinental team

Firdose Moonda25-Oct-2010

Graeme Smith: “This series will give players the opportunity to stake claims”•AFP

The last time South Africa played cricket in the United Arab Emirates was in Sharjah ten years ago. There, they lost to Pakistan by 16 runs in the final of a one-day tri-series that also included India. That South African side included the likes of Nicky Boje, Lance Klusener and Herschelle Gibbs, and was captained by Hansie Cronje on the eve of his fall from grace. The South African cricketing landscape has undergone major changes in the last decade. Only Jacques Kallis remains a part of the ODI squad from that day in March 2000, and he is a doubtful starter for the latest mission to the Middle East. Kallis has been out of action for over a month with a neck injury, and will be assessed by the South African medical staff ahead of the two Twenty20s against Pakistan. The rest of the squad will be getting their first taste of cricket in the desert. Not only will the conditions be much warmer than what they are used to, but the schedule much more crammed. Two T20s, five ODIS and two tests have been packed into four weeks. The players left for UAE on Sunday and have only had a day to acclimatise before diving headfirst into the action. “We are not going to have a lot of time to get used to conditions so I hope we will be able to sum them up pretty quickly. We have to be versatile and be able to adapt,” said ODI captain Graeme Smith during the whitewash of Zimbabwe that South Africa completed last week. The matches against Zimbabwe were largely regarded as a warm-up to a season that includes a home series against India and culminates in the World Cup. Smith felt that the victories against Zimbabwe have sent them to the UAE well-prepared in all departments. “The confidence base is good, our batters got time in the middle and bowlers progressively got better. We’ve done all the hard work ahead of this series.”South Africa experimented with new players against Zimbabwe, with Colin Ingram and Rusty Theron making their debuts. It is all part of Operation World Cup, which involves selecting a team that can finally end South Africa’s ICC trophy drought. There are no brand new faces for the Pakistan series, indicating that the focus is now on preparing the players that have been used so far. Coach Corrie van Zyl said he didn’t know if the squad for this series can be labelled the final fifteen. “That is a question I would like you to ask Andrew Hudson (chairman of selectors),” joked van Zyl at the team’s departure press conference on Sunday.Ingram and Theron settled into international cricket in outstanding fashion, with Ingram scoring a century on debut and Theron grabbing a five-for in his second ODI. Both staked their claim for a place in the team but face plenty of competition for their spots. Smith made it clear that if Ingram is used he “will play at five or six” as soon as Kallis is fit. Theron will have to do battle with Morne Morkel and Dale Steyn, both of whom are recovering from injuries. While the new faces are creating waves, there was a more familiar one, who was also entrusted with a new role, also in the spotlight. AB de Villiers looks certain to don the wicketkeeping gloves in the ODI side going forward and showed that he is capable of playing the dual role of keeper-batsman. Besides doing a decent job behind the stumps against Zimbabwe, he also scored back-to-back hundreds and is ranked the world’s top ODI player, according to the latest ICC rankings. Mark Boucher (who was also on the 2000 tour) is not taking being dropped lying down. He said losing the wicketkeeping role gutted him and he will fight to regain the spot.It is this type of inter-player competitiveness that Smith believes will decide the World Cup squad. “This series will give players the opportunity to stake claims. The coaching staff can have ideas for what they want to achieve tactically but ultimately it’s the players who put their hands up.”Although Smith is still the senior voice of South African cricket, he will spend the first two matches as just another player. Since relinquishing the T20 captaincy in August, Smith has played under Johan Botha in the shortest format, where he says he enjoys “relaxing on the boundary.” Smith will also give up the one-day captaincy after the World Cup and is using the time he has left in charge to “create the best environment I can so that we can be as successful as we can.”With all this introspection, it appears South Africa have given little thought to their opposition. In fact, they have been quietly trying to steer away from being bombarded with the one question that tails Pakistan like a cop behind a drunk-driver: What is your reaction to the spot-fixing controversy? Smith’s answer was typical PR speak, “I guess we are going to get this question quite a few times in the next month. For us, it’s important that we play the sport in the right spirit. It’s our job to go there and play competitive cricket and do our best. We have to trust in the ICC to lead the game. They are the main stakeholders and it’s important that they make the right decisions and we trust them to do that.”South Africa know that Pakistan present them with an unpredictable challenge and they want to use the series as a way of testing their skills against a subcontinental team. “This is our first taste of the subcontinent for the summer. It’s going to be important for the spinners to see how they are doing and also for the batsmen to see how they play spin. It’s a good way of getting the whole squad used to conditions ahead of the World Cup,” said Botha. South Africa play ten ODIs before the big tournament. The countdown starts here.
