India took the honours on day two in Mohali, amassing 469 and then putting Australia under extreme pressure by claiming four wickets before stumps. Sourav Ganguly, who scored his 16th Test century, and Mahendra Singh Dhoni batted in contrasting fashion to force Australia on the defensive, and debutant Amit Mishra struck twice to maintain the intensity created by India’s new-ball pair.Ganguly, who had struggled in the series against Sri Lanka, put on 109 for the seventh wicket with Dhoni to maintain the advantage built on the first day. Ganguly fell for 102 but Dhoni continued to attack, forcing Ricky Ponting to spread his field far and wide. Australia’s bowlers struggled to make breakthroughs and most of their wickets came when India tried to up the momentum. There was a lot of speculation before the series began that Ganguly wouldn’t survive four Tests, but he is a man few can predict. Not long after lunch, he tucked Cameron White off his pads towards deep midwicket boundary and indulged himself. His hundred-watt smile and fist-pumping celebration was far from smug; and it seemed it was meant more for himself than anyone else. He had scratched his way into the nineties, while Dhoni entertained at the other end with powerful pulls and drives, and his celebrations signified the achievement of a personal goal.Ganguly batted with restraint in the morning, watching the ball carefully, playing late, and letting several deliveries pass outside off. He batted 122 deliveries yesterday, and wasn’t about to throw it away. He didn’t thrust the bat much, took the short-pitched deliveries on merit, and nudged the singles around. He began by pulling Brett Lee for four but was also made to look ungainly by other bouncers. His concentration never wavered.Taking a leaf out of coach Gary Kirsten’s book – keep out the straight ones and try to ignore the others unless you can cut or drive – Ganguly was an almost unnoticeable accumulator. His second century in Mohali came 11 years after his previous one here, and like that hundred against Sri Lanka, this was scored at a strike-rate of just over 45.Smart StatsSourav Ganguly and Mahendra Singh Dhoni had contrasting approaches in their 109-run stand. Out of the 61 Dhoni scored in the partnership, 36 (59%) came in boundaries, while Ganguly’s share of 42 included three fours, and 23 singles. This was Ganguly’s first century in 23 innings since his double-century against Pakistan in Bangalore.Dhoni’s 92 was his highest score in Tests in India, where he’s played 19 innings.Zaheer Khan dismissed Matthew Hayden for the third time in the series and for the seventh time in 11 matches, the most times he’s dismissed any batsman.Left-handers account for 77 (41.6%) of dismissals Zaheer’s 185 wickets. They are also more likely to be bowled or lbw against him than right-hand batsmen: 32 [lbws and bowleds] out of 77 [wickets] compared to 33 out of 108.Ganguly’s stodgy approach, however, was complemented by Dhoni’s aggression. He pulled his first ball – a short one from Lee – for four and then hooked Siddle for six before turning his attention back to Lee for two more fours in an over. Repeatedly getting inside the line of the short deliveries, Dhoni picked off runs into yawning leg-side spaces at a steady clip. He also waited for the ball, steering backward of point and driving in the V. His running was, as always, excellent and he urged Ganguly to be alert as well.Batting remained easy, with no swing or variable bounce to speak of, and the two contrasting approaches from Ganguly and Dhoni frustrated Australia in what was almost a perfect morning for the home team.As has been the case in the past, a shuffle down the track just after a hundred was Ganguly’s undoing and Lee tumbled backwards at long-off to take the catch. The wicket was against the run of play, but Dhoni didn’t let it hinder him. He passed 1500 Test runs, brought up his 10th fifty with a six over long-on, and hit three more later. He was the last wicket, lbw for 92, and gave the persevering Siddle his third wicket. The Australians had spent nearly five sessions in the field and, when it was their turn to bat, Zaheer Khan ensured that Matthew Hayden did stay very long under the hot Mohali sun. He nailed Hayden for the third time in three innings – and seven overall – by forcing an inside edge on to the stumps with his third delivery.A short while after tea, Ishant Sharma had a close shout against Ponting which Rudi Koertzen turned down. A few balls later another sharp inswinger hit Ponting on the pad, and this time he was on the back foot, leaving Australia 17 for 2. Zaheer and Ishant attacked through their opening spell and the change to spin didn’t release the pressure.Mishra’s 18th ball in Test cricket resulted in a wicket. Katich, who had gone to 33 with some soft-handed strokes, played on. Mishra tied down the batsmen by mixing googlies with flippers and pitching them on a length. The spinners turned the ball sharply; Michael Hussey had one thick edge bypass slip and was reprieved by Dhoni on 25 off Harbhajan Singh. Hussey rode his luck to 37 by stumps, looking on as Mishra struck in the last over of the day, hitting Michael Clarke on the pad with a googly from round the stumps. India were without Anil Kumble in this game but Mishra has filled the gap impressively so far.India’s bowling efforts will, however, be a postscript. This was Ganguly and Dhoni’s day.

Newcastle transfer update on Hendry

Newcastle United are now reportedly weighing up a cut-price move to sign Jack Hendry before the summer transfer window ends.

The Lowdown: Centre-back wanted

The St. James’ Park faithful are clearly after a new central defender, with the likes of Phil Jones and Mouctar Diakhaby being linked so far this month.

However, with so little time left in the window remaining, any deal will have to be done fast in order to bring them to the North East.

The Latest: Hendry eyed

As per The Daily Mail, the Tyneside club are one of a number of sides to have made enquiries over the possibility of signing Hendry, along with Burnley, Southampton, West Brom and Sheffield United, while Torino are also interested in his signature.

Oostende value their player at around the £8m mark but a deal could be done for around £4m, which has put a lot of teams on alert.

The Verdict: Sign

Given that could be available for half of his value, the Magpies should not be breaking a sweat in trying to get this Hendry deal done.

Described as a ‘natural leader’ by Oostende manager Alexander Blessin back in November, he is currently the captain of his side – despite only joining last year – and so would bring leadership qualities both on the pitch as well as on it.

He has also started the 2021/22 season off well, winning no fewer than five of his duels per game in the Belgium Pro League, while also averaging 4.6 clearances, 1.2 interceptions and 1.2 tackles per match (Sofascore).

Nonetheless, the Scotland international would certainly be a smart purchase by the Toon.

Mott undecided on New Zealand job

Matthew Mott has said he is 50-50 on whether to accept the job as New Zealand’s coach or stay in his current role with New South Wales

Matthew Mott has said he is 50-50 on whether to accept the job as New Zealand’s coach or stay in his current role with New South Wales. Mott is New Zealand Cricket’s preferred choice to replace John Bracewell but after only one season as a first-class coach he is uncertain whether to take on the job.”I’m definitely keeping my options open. I’ll be brutally honest, it’s about a 50-50 split at the moment,” Mott told . “I’d love to keep repaying the faith that New South Wales showed in me when I made the progression from player to coach. I can’t fault the way they’ve looked after me.”Mott, 35, was a first-class batsman with Queensland and Victoria but ended his playing career relatively early to move into coaching. He was an assistant under Trevor Bayliss at New South Wales before taking the senior role in 2007-08 and he guided the Blues to the Pura Cup title in his first season. He became the frontrunner for the New Zealand job when the South Africans Graham Ford and Mickey Arthur made themselves unavailable. However, an improved two-year offer from New South Wales has made the decision a difficult one for Mott.”There always comes a time to move on, and whether that time’s now,” he said. “In an ideal world I’d love to have another couple of years here. There’s also the fact that the job you knock back is the one you probably never get. That’s weighing on my mind a bit.”Mott has some links with the New Zealand team; he coached Brendon McCullum at the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL. He said besides landing the job as Australia’s coach, the New Zealand role was the next best option on the international scene.”From what I’ve heard Dan Vettori is a very good captain and a fresh bunch of senior players around him are keen to make a difference,” Mott said. “With the management changes there seems to be a good young vibe with a bit of a blank canvas, which is what appeals to me.”Mott will this week get a closer look at the New Zealanders when they face New South Wales in a tour match at the SCG starting on Thursday. New Zealand have confirmed their starting line-up for the match and it includes four specialist fast bowlers with Mark Gillespie and Grant Elliott left out.New Zealand team for tour match Jamie How, Aaron Redmond, Jesse Ryder, Ross Taylor, Brendon McCullum (wk), Daniel Flynn, Daniel Vettori (capt), Kyle Mills, Tim Southee, Iain O’Brien, Chris Martin.

Sheffield United set to sign Karamoh

Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Sheffield United are set to sign Yann Karamoh on loan from Parma, which will surely delight Slavisa Jokanovic and the Blades fanbase.

What’s the word?

According to Romano, the Frenchman is currently undergoing a medical in Paris before completing a loan switch to the Blades, with the deal set to be announced at some point today before the deadline.

So far this summer, the Blades have brought in two loan players in the shape of Ben Davies and Conor Hourihane and it seems as if Jokanovic is making full use of the loan market with Karamoh set to join for the remainder of the 2021/22 campaign.

Will Karamoh be a good signing?

United are certainly in need of fresh faces at Bramall Lane after a shocking start to the season, one which sees them sitting second-bottom of the Championship with just two points from their opening five fixtures in the second tier.

Jokanovic has been guilty of utilising similar tactics from his predecessors Paul Heckingbottom and Chris Wilder, lining up with the familiar 3-5-2 formation once again at the weekend in the goalless draw with Luton Town.

After that result, the Serbian manager called for the board to bring in fresh faces, saying:

“These three days will be an important three days for our board, to do what they promised before I arrived here.

“It’s not a question about today, it’s a question about our start to the season – we are not comfortable, we don’t show the quality, we don’t show the personality.”

Considering the lack of wingers he currently has available in his squad, the former Fulham boss will surely be delighted that Karamoh is set to join, especially considering he has plenty of experience in Ligue 1 and Serie A.

Last season saw the 23-year-old contribute two goals and two assists for Parma in Serie A, averaging a solid 6.60 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

This is better than the vast majority of Sheffield United players have averaged so far this season and considering he is arguably playing at a lower level, he should be a good addition to Jokanovic’s squad, so Blades fans should be buzzing to hear that he is set to join.

Celtic: Hoops struggling to sign Giakoumakis

Celtic are now struggling in their attempts to sign Georgios Giakoumakis, according to Duncan Castles.

The Lowdown: Positive updates

There have been two positive updates in Celtic’s pursuit of the 26-year-old after Ange Postecoglou called him over a Scotland move earlier this month.

The first came from Greek reporter Giannis Chorianopoulos, who suggested that Celtic have agreed terms in principle with VVV-Venlo for Giakoumakis.

Derek Rae then claimed that Werder Bremen, who held face-to-face talks with the striker, moved on to Hannover’s Marvin Ducksch, with a transfer now announced.

The Latest: Castles’ post

Castles, who was the first to share Celtic’s interest in Giakoumakis on The Daily Record, posted on Twitter on Wednesday, sharing a link to The Transfer Window podcast.

In his post, he revealed that the Hoops ‘struggle’ on Giakoumakis, with The Daily Record sharing a €2.5m fee.

Giakoumakis is keen to leave VVV-Venlo and has held talks with Celtic, but a deal is not done yet, with any move possibly hinging on a potential exit for Odsonne Edouard. [The Daily Record]

The Verdict: Celtic need to take the lead

Dominic McKay and co need to take the lead in the final days of the window, even if that means signing Giakoumakis with Edouard still on the books.

What they don’t want to happen is to part ways with Edouard and then run out of time to secure a new forward before the deadline closes.

It appears as if a move for Giakoumakis has hit a snag, but hopefully, Postecoglou will get his man in the final few days.

Lucas, Sornoza, Wellington Silva…

Confira a entrevista do doutor Douglas Santos nesta terça-feira:

SORNOZA:

Leeds man Klich tipped to find best form

Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan believes Mateusz Klich will find his best form this season, following an impressive summer.

The Lowdown: Klich enjoys good pre-season

The Whites are preparing for the start of the new Premier League season, with a mouthwatering trip to Manchester United awaiting on Saturday lunchtime.

Someone who has featured prominently throughout the summer is Klich, with the Poland ace scoring in the 2-2 draw with Villarreal last weekend.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359346″]

The Latest: Pundit tips Klich to shine

The 31-year-old wasn’t always a key starter last season, starting 28 of Leeds’ 38 league games, but someone who believes he could thrive in 2021/22 is Whelan.

Speaking to Football Insider, the ex-Whites man believes Klich looks primed to enjoy a strong campaign for Marcelo Bielsa’s side:

“Klich’s had a brilliant pre-season. He already had a goal in the bag away at Loughborough and last night’s finish tells me he is sprightly, sharp and ready to make a big impact this season.

“I think they are all itching for the new season to get started. Everyone one of those players will have wanted to play themselves into the starting XI for that first game. It doesn’t get much bigger than an opening day game against Man United.

“Klich is one that has definitely stood out in pre-season and I expect we will see him back to his best now.

“He had a great start to last season and then had a little dip so he’ll be looking for consistency this year.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-11/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Verdict: More of a squad player

Klich’s form wasn’t always good last season – he openly admitted that it dropped off in the second half of the campaign – and he will have to up his level if he wants to start every week this time around.

Kalvin Phillips is an undisputed key man in the middle of the park, and with a new central midfielder potentially coming in, too, there will be pressure on Klich to perform.

At worst, however, he remains a strong squad option and he will hopefully take his pre-season form with him into the opening game this weekend.
