Campbell hits century in second easy win for Zimbabwe over Bangladesh

The second One-Day International between Zimbabwe and Bangladesh began undercloudy skies, but with no immediate prospect of rain

John Ward08-Apr-2001The second One-Day International between Zimbabwe and Bangladesh began undercloudy skies, but with no immediate prospect of rain. Zimbabwe in their 50overs were able to manage only 230 for seven, but the conditions made fastscoring very difficult; Bangladesh were never able to mount a challenge andwere dismissed for 103.

The pitch for the day was closer cut than that for the first match, so wasexpected to be a little more favourable for batting, although the thickoutfield remained a handicap. However, due to the underlying moisture itwas again likely to help the seamers early on, and by winning the toss forthe second time Bangladesh had the chance to make amends for their error ofSaturday and this time put Zimbabwe in to bat. It is unfortunate that onthis ground the toss should so often be crucial to the course of the match.Zimbabwe played the same team, while Bangladesh made the surprising move ofdropping their one Test centurion Aminul Islam to bring in all-rounderMehrab Hossain, in an effort to strengthen their bowling.Alistair Campbell made a good start by pulling the second ball from MonjurulIslam to the boundary, but when the bowlers put the ball in the right placethe batsmen struggled at first. Two fine straight drives by Campbell were soslowed by the outfield that they failed to reach the boundary, and it wasobvious that the aerial route would be more profitable if they could avoidthe fielders. The bowling was not quite consistently accurate enough to putthe batsmen under pressure to score, and the opening pair managed three anover before Whittall (16) holed out to long leg with the score on 49.As Stuart Carlisle joined Campbell the scoring rate gradually moved up tofour, reached at the same time as the century partnership. Runs came in amixture of steady accumulation and big hits, Carlisle reaching his fiftywith a six off the long-suffering Naimur Rahman before skying a big hit tothe keeper to depart for 56; 182 for two, and the partnership of 133 was thesecond-best for Zimbabwe’s second wicket in one-day internationals.Alistair Campbell lashed the next ball through extra cover for his seventhTest century, but then holed out to long-on for 103.Wickets then fell in a flurry as the batsmen were prepared to sacrificeeverything in the chase for runs, but with limited success, as the bowlersmanaged to keep matters under control and the conditions hindered quickscoring. But Bangladesh would have to bat magnificently to win. However, the Bangladesh top order again failed against the Zimbabwe seamers, twowickets falling for nine runs and four for 41, altogether two umpiringdecisions were perhaps dubious: Al-Shahriar’s lbw may have been a littlehigh, while Meerab Hossain was caught at the wicket off a ball from Streakthat was above shoulder height. Streak in fact had an unimpressive andinconsistent opening spell.Naimur Rahman (25) tried gallantly to fight his way out of trouble but hechopped a ball from Dirk Viljoen on to his stumps, to make Bangladesh 76 forfive. Then came a steady decline, with opening batsman Javed Omarrock-solid at one end and the tail declining steadily. At one stage thescoreboard briefly named the two current batsmen as Omar and Sharif, but thelatter (Mohammad of that name) quickly perished without scoring. The hundred came up with the last pair together but the innings closed for103 in the 31st over, giving Zimbabwe victory by 127 runs. Omar became thefirst batsman to carry his bat through an innings against Zimbabwe, andfinished on 33.It was a disappointing two days for Bangladesh, whose great problem wastheir inexperience. There were perhaps in the region of 3,000 spectators oneach day and they had the pleasure of seeing their team win, but the cricketwas not the most entertaining, and for that the disappointing state of theground was largely responsible.

– Ele estava me provocando no primeiro tempo, me segurou ali…

Swansea City interested in Matty James

Swansea City are interested in a deal to bring Matty James to the Liberty Stadium this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by the Daily Mail, who claim that Steve Cooper’s side are one of a number of Championship clubs keeping track of the Leicester City midfielder ahead of a potential move in the very near future.

It is reported that the 29-year-old will be available on a free transfer upon the expiry of his current contract with the Foxes, which is set to run out in the coming weeks, having spent nine years with the Premier League side.

Cooper must move

With Swansea City’s central midfielder Matt Grimes being heavily linked with a move away from the Welsh side this summer, the middle of the park looks likely to be a position in which Cooper will look to strengthen in the transfer market.

And, following two solid loan spells with both Barnsley and Coventry City last season, the £900k-rated James looks to be a very suitable replacement for the potentially outgoing Swans star.

In the first half of the 2020/21 Championship campaign, the £32k-per-week midfielder made 15 appearances for Valerien Ismael’s Barnsley side, making an average of 1.4 tackles, 0.8 interceptions and 0.6 key passes per game, culminating in an average WhoScored match rating of 6.53.

However, after returning to Leicester and subsequently being loaned back out to Coventry in the January transfer window, the 29-year-old’s form at the Ricoh Arena dramatically improved. James scored three goals and registering three assists over his 23 league appearances, as well as making an average of 1.6 tackles, 1.3 interceptions and 1.3 key passes per game, earning him an average WhoScored match rating of 6.88.

For comparison, over his 48 Championship appearances for Swansea last season, Grimes netted three times and provided three assists, as well as making an average of two tackles, 1.4 interceptions and 0.9 key passes per game, seeing the midfielder earn a seasonal WhoScored match rating of 6.97.

As such, should the 25-year-old indeed move on to pastures new this summer, the player whom the Leicestershire Live writer Jordan Blackwell dubbed a “perfect” midfielder would very much seem to be an apt replacement for Grimes, especially on a free transfer.

Liverpool linked to Cristian Romero

Liverpool have been linked with a move for Atalanta defender Cristian Romero ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

What’s the story?

According to Italian outlet Calciomercato (as reported by The Mirror), Jurgen Klopp’s charges are making progress in their pursuit of the 23-year-old as the German manager looks to strengthen his defensive options.

The report claims that the Serie A outfit value Romero at around £43m following an impressive 2020/21 campaign, but they must first turn his loan move from Juventus into a permanent one.

Klopp needs him

Liverpool’s current centre-back options struggled with serious injury issues last season, significantly hindering their progress as youngsters Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams were forced to fill in on many occasions.

Klopp has already moved to address that issue, bringing in Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig for £34 million, although his suspect injury record means the former Borussia Dortmund boss may want to add further reinforcements – the Frenchman has suffered four significant injuries in the past two seasons alone, missing 45 games.

The Anfield outfit finished a whopping 17 points behind Premier League champions Manchester City in the recently concluded campaign, largely down to their leaky defence.

While the Citizens conceded just 32 goals in 38 games, Liverpool let in 42. Building a solid foundation is key to any success in football, and adding Romero would ensure Klopp can construct exactly that over the coming months.

The Argentina international played a pivotal part as Gian Piero Gasperini’s men finished third in the Italian top-flight, making 31 league appearances, scoring two goals and assisting a further three.

Despite his telling contribution in the attacking third, Romero was also crucial to Atalanta’s defensive solidity, making 2.2 clearances per league game, 3.1 interceptions and two tackles, placing him in the top two amongst his teammates for each metric.

His physical style, love for a tackle and ability in the air would make the South American an ideal centre-back in the Premier League, and the possibility of the 6 ft powerhouse lining up alongside Van Dijk is a daunting prospect for any top-flight striker.

The pair have the potential to form a formidable partnership at the heart of the defence, with Romero also excelling with the ball at his feet and building from the back – he averaged the sixth-most passes of any Atalanta player, and with the fourth-best accuracy of any player to have started more than one game.

With Liverpool aiming to regain their Premier League crown next season, Klopp needs an extra centre-back to avoid a repeat scenario that killed off their title tilt in 2020/21, and bringing Romero would be a significant coup.

Sheff Wed face competition for Griffiths

Sheffield Wednesday reportedly face competition for the signing of Josh Griffiths this summer, with Portsmouth and Lincoln City also keen on a move for the goalkeeper.

The Lowdown: Owls show Griffiths interest

The Owls are getting ready for life in League One, following their hugely disappointing relegation from the Championship last season.

Darren Moore will be keen to bring in his own players this summer and West Brom goalkeeper Griffiths is someone Wednesday have been linked with.

The 19-year-old impressed on loan at Cheltenham Town last season, starting 44 games in League Two as they gained promotion to the third tier of English football, winning the league in the process.

The Latest: League One pair also keen

The Owls face competition for Griffiths’ signature, however, with journalist Alan Nixon taking to Twitter to claim that Portsmouth and Lincoln are both eyeing up loan moves for the teenager.

It remains to be seen how serious Wednesday’s interest is, but it looks as though they won’t be able to sign him easily.

The Verdict: Exciting long-term prospect

With Keiren Westwood leaving Hillsborough this summer, the need for a new ‘keeper is clear and Griffiths is someone very much at the other end of his career.

He looks like an exciting prospect who will be full of confidence after last season’s success, so Moore would be sensible to try and snap him up.

Granted, experience isn’t necessarily on Griffiths’ side, but he has already shown he can shine for a promotion-chasing team – something Wednesday will intend to be in 2021/22.

In other news, Sheff Wed have been tipped to sign an attacker this summer – find out who it is here.

Azhar's aim both on and off the mark

And so Mohd Azharuddin has finally come out with guns blazing

Partab Ramchand13-Jan-2001And so Mohd Azharuddin has finally come out with guns blazing. Therewere times, while he was batting, that fielders had to run helterskelter, unable to stop the fusillade of shots hit by the wristyHyderabadi artist. Now it would appear that is the turn of hisdetractors, officials and one time cricketing colleagues in the fieldto feel the heat of his sudden and vicious counter attack. The besieged former Indian captain, who turns 38 next month, wasobviously biding his time to strike back. Now, in his first interviewafter being slapped with a life ban by the Board of Control forCricket in India for his alleged role in the match fixing scandal,Azharuddin has hit out at cricketers like Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastriand Vinod Kambli, who played alongside him through the eighties andnineties. According to him, cricketers from Mumbai – as indeed all thethree are – have been able to get away with wrongdoing without being”investigated properly.”Azharuddin has made certain specific charges. “Nobody talks of the Rs70 lakh in cash found in Sunil Gavaskar’s Gymkhana locker. What aboutRavi Shastri’s Ali Bagh farmhouse and other costly properties? How didVinod Kambli lose his money from a locker?” These are the allegationsthat he has made in the interview to a national news weekly. To an extent, he may have a point. Initially, when news filteredthrough about the huge sum of money in Gavaskar’s locker, eyebrowswere raised and the tremors were felt well beyond the club. But thensomehow there just did not appear to be much of a follow up on whatwas clearly a matter of some controversy. Then came news of Kambli’smoney stolen from a locker and there did not seem to be a satisfactoryexplanation about this too. Shastri’s farmhouse also went off theheadlines as quickly as it made them. But thereafter much of his aim has gone awry. He exhibits eitherignorance or arrogance. Accusing people of targeting him because theyare jealous of his achievements, making uncharitable comments aboutSachin Tendulkar (which are not true in any case), his initialreaction to the CBI report (“I took the report as any otherblackmailing tactic”), and his talk about a “malicious campaign”against him when he was made captain (“the present BCCI president ACMuthiah opposed my candidature”) are all counter allegations thatshow him to be unrepentant. This can win him no new converts and hemust remember that right now he does not have many friends in thecricketing world anyway.Azharuddin says he is still hopeful of starting his cricket academyand making a comeback to play his 100th Test. “But before steppingout into the public, I want to clear my name, as I have beenwronged,” he says. One wonders how many will buy this speciousargument.During his playing days, Azharuddin was equally dexterous playing offthe front and back foot. So off the field too he has decided to attackon two fronts. Even while going on the counter attack against hisfellow cricketers, he has decided to take on the BCCI and will soonchallenge in the Andhra Pradesh High Court the life ban imposed on himfor his alleged involvement in the match fixing scandal. His advocate HR Bhardwaj has said that the writ petition in thisregard, seeking quashing of the life ban has been finalised and wouldbe filed in the high court. According to him, the main ground to betaken before the court in the petition would be to question the legalvalue of the CBI report. “The CBI followed no established procedurewhile conducting the probe,” said Bhardwaj and added “the CBI reporton betting and match fixing was neither an investigation nor a properinquiry.” Obviously if Azharuddin wants to commence a furious counterattack, he has found the right lawyer. When told that the BCCIdecision was handed down after the board anti corruption commissionerK Madhavan endorsed the findings of the CBI report, Bhardwaj is quotedto have said “Mr Madhavan was nobody to conduct the inquiry. He hadno jurisdiction to take up such a probe. It is only the cricket boardwhich is authorised to conduct the probe, hence the punishment givento Azharuddin is illegal.”The BCCI however has remained unfazed by such strong words. Boardofficials have said that they were not worried over the threat byAzharuddin to challenge the life ban in court. Board executivesecretary, Sharad Diwadkar, said on Friday that “BCCI is not worriedover the matter. We appointed Madhavan to look into the betting andmatch-fixing scam apart from hiring the services of a few advocatesand I think they will do the needful.”The irrepressible JY Lele is not to be left behind. “How can theplayers deny that they had no connections with bookmakers,” asked theBoard secretary. He added that the CBI report had proved there was anexus between the players and bookmakers. “The code of conductclearly states that there should be no connection between players andbookmakers. As the players have violated that code, we have slappedthe ban on them,” said Lele. The BCCI secretary also said that the BCCI had taken opinions fromlegal luminaries before proceeding with the decision to ban theplayers. “The attorney general of India was sitting next to Muthiah(Board president) when we took the decision and he had expressed theopinion that the ban cannot be challenged in any court.” And theBoard will undoubtedly be encouraged to know that some leading lawyersin Mumbai have expressed the view that it was well within the BCCI’sright to impose life ban on any cricketer if it feels that aparticular player has violated the terms of contract with them. There was those who thought that with the ban imposed by the BCCI onDecember 5, the dust had finally settled down on the controversy. Onthe contrary the “fun and games” may just be beginning. Watch thisspace for the next episode.

Celtic: Summer exit likely for Ryan Christie

With Celtic set to witness a mass range of departures from Parkhead this summer, there will be some players within their ranks that supporters will be sadder to see leave than others.Losing top goal scorer Odsonne Edouard to the jaws of English football would not be ideal while watching Kristoffer Ajer pack his bags would be difficult as well.

What’s the word?

One player that hasn’t been too popular with the fans this season is Ryan Christie.

His performances have dwindled and now he could be leaving Paradise behind with his contract expiring shortly.

Rather bizarrely, the Scot’s current terms expire in January which means they face losing him for nothing next year.

Fortunately, Southampton look as though they could come to the rescue of both player and club.

According to The Sun, the Saints are interested in landing Christie during the upcoming transfer window and are aiming to watch him in action during Euro 2020.

Also interested are fellow Premier League sides Burnley and Norwich City.

Huge boost

With interest this summer comes the greater chance of actually receiving a fee for Christie, something that wouldn’t be possible next year.

That’s a positive for the club but his exit is likely to be welcomed by the supporters too.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-manager-and-transfer-news-ajer-howe-lampard-wilshere-gauld” title=”Read the latest Celtic manager and transfer news!”]

They’ve launched some pretty scathing attacks on the Scotland international this season, bemoaning him for his abject performances.

Traditionally a number 10, Christie has been forced to play out wide for large portions of the campaign due to a prolonged injury to James Forrest.

Unfortunately, his form in that third of the pitch has been dismal.

Last term the 26-year-old racked up 20 goals and 16 assists in all competitions but as Celtic laboured to a trophyless climax, he ended the term with only seven strikes.

To sum up how dismal his form was, he only scored twice in his last 24 league outings, being torn to shreds by various sections of fans because of his long-range shooting.

At one stage this term, the attacker had managed only one goal from 51 attempts at goal from outside of the box.

Courtesy of Bhoys Analytics, a video demonstrates the ease at which Christie wastes promising opportunities. He would drift towards the edge of the area but fire an attempt wildly away from goal instead of sliding in teammates standing in a better position.

A classic example came against Ross County when the player fired five shots off target in a shoddy attacking display. He even spurned an opportunity from a matter of yards out, firing handsomely over the bar after being teed up by Edouard.

With that in mind, losing Christie should come as a boost to Celtic’s chances moving forward. It will also delight the supporters who have been left dismayed with his performances in 2020/21.
