Aguero could upset Leeds dressing room

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Leeds United midfielder Carlton Palmer has warned Sergio Aguero’s wages could upset the Elland Road dressing room.

Leeds have emerged as shock contenders to sign Aguero this summer when his contract at Manchester City expires, with 90min reporting that Marcelo Bielsa has identified the 32-year-old striker as a replacement for Rodrigo.

Rodrigo has failed to make a real impact this season following his move from Valencia last August, struggling with injury, and it now appears that an exit could be on the cards.

It would leave Bielsa perhaps needing to bring in a new forward as mentioned. But if that man happens to be Aguero, Palmer believes issues at the club could arise.

On Leeds’ reported interest in the Argentina international, he told FFC:

“You bring somebody like Sergio in on huge money and the rest of the players are behind him, then you’ve upset the dressing room and the apple cart.”

According to Spotrac, Aguero is currently on a weekly salary of £230,000, making him one of Manchester City’s highest earners.

It reamins to be seen whether Leeds would be willing to pay anything close to that, but targeting a player of Aguero’s profile does at least show ambition.

Sutton tips five players to leave Celtic

Chris Sutton has said that Odsonne Edouard and Kristoffer Ajer look ‘destined’ to leave Celtic in the upcoming transfer window and has ruled out three of the club’s loans being made permanent.

Sutton was writing in his Record Sport column after the Hoops were beaten 2-0 in the Scottish Cup fourth round on Sunday. They had won the competition for four consecutive years, but defeat condemns them to a first trophyless season for more than a decade.

Celtic’s hand may be forced in case of Edouard and Ajer

Edouard, who is out of contract next summer and has reportedly been the subject of a £15m approach from Leicester City, missed a penalty in the closing stages of the game (via Daily Mail).

Centre-back Ajer also has just over a year to run on his deal and has been named as a Newcastle United transfer target in a potential £8m deal (via Daily Mail).

“You have the likes of Odsonne Edouard and Kristoffer Ajer, who look destined to be on their way in the summer,” Sutton wrote in Record Sport.

“[Edouard] must have something lined up already because if you were a scout watching him yesterday, you’re certainly not putting him forward for a top club in Europe.”

Laxalt, Kenny and Elyounoussi struggle with departure in the offing

Sutton then turned his attention to the loanees, declaring that Diego Laxalt, Jonjoe Kenny and Mohamed Elyounoussi ‘will all be gone’ come the end of the season.

All three had a difficult evening on Sunday, with Laxalt beaten before Kenny turned the ball into his net for 2-0, while Elyounoussi was guilty of wasting a golden opportunity at the other end after Edouard squared the ball to him.

Prior reports had suggested that Celtic were keen on long-term deals for the AC Milan and Southampton stars in particular.

“You look at the loan players who will all be gone,” Sutton wrote.

“Diego Laxalt had a shocker but it was hardly a surprise. It was one thing getting skinned by Joe Aribo, but the lack of effort to get back in was telling.

“Jonjoe Kenny wasn’t much better on the other side and you’ve got Mohamed Elyounoussi who is also going and he wasn’t clinical enough where it mattered.”

Transfer Tavern verdict

It certainly looks as if a squad overhaul could be on the cards in Glasgow this summer, as Sutton is suggesting.

The sales of Edouard and Ajer could net Celtic £23m if the Daily Mail’s respective reports are to be believed, and while that is a healthy amount to reinvest, the Hoops have put themselves in an unenviable position by allowing the duo’s contracts to reach the final year.

Everton fans on Aarons transfer update

Many Everton fans have been flocking to an update from Alan Myers on Max Aarons.

As per a tweet from the sport news editor, Daniel Farke has denied that Norwich City are in advanced talks with the Goodison Park outfit over the potential sale of the right-back. This is despite Italian football journalist and transfer guru Fabrizio Romano recently claiming the opposite.

Nonetheless, what is for sure is that Aarons would be a welcome addition to the Merseyside club, given that Seamus Coleman is 32 years of age and Carlo Ancelotti’s team need to start thinking about buying a long-term successor for the Irishman.

Aarons would certainly fit the bill, and at just 21 years old, the England under-21 international has a lot of potential left to fulfil.

Everton loanee Gibson slammed v Watford

Many Reading fans were left slamming the display of Everton youngster Lewis Gibson in their 2-0 away loss at Watford in the EFL Championship on Friday night.

The 20-year-old, who is a central defender by trade, had a torrid time at left-back up against Ismaila Sarr, who scored both goals as the Hornets pushed ever closer to automatic promotion back up to the Premier League, and subsequently dealt a blow to Reading’s chances of gaining a play-off spot.

Gibson failed to make any dribbles, accurate crosses or block any shots, while he also lost possession of the ball no fewer than on 18 separate occasions in the game, the second-most out of any of his teammates to have set foot on the pitch, earning him a very poor 5.9 overall rating on Sofascore.

While he was playing out of his natural position, this could perhaps paint a bad picture for Gibson’s hopes of a future at Everton – if he is struggling in the second tier it will prove extremely difficult to break into a top flight side.

Leeds should target Spurs’ Harry Winks

Leeds should look at a summer move for Harry Winks after Paul Robinson claimed he would be a “great signing” for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

What’s the story?

The £25m-rated England international has struggled for game-time in the Premier League this season with Spurs, making just ten appearances in the top flight.

Robinson has suggested that Bielsa’s side could be an ideal destination for Winks to rejuvenate his career, and insisted that he remains a “great player”.

The former Whites goalkeeper said: “Harry Winks would be a great signing, I’d love him to come to Leeds. He’s a great player, I rate him really highly. He’s been unlucky at Spurs not to get more game time because I think he could get in any of the top-six sides. He’s a great player.

“If he came to Leeds it would be a real coup. Harry Winks and Ben White would be a great start to the summer and I expect Leeds to spend big again.”

Midfield technician for Bielsa

The £50,000-a-week earning Winks has fallen off the radar somewhat in recent seasons, having been a firmly established player at both club and international level when Mauricio Pochettino was in charge at Spurs.

The former Lilywhites boss made it clear just how much he rated the 25-year-old, saying back in September 2018: “The characteristics are perfect to play football. When we talk about midfielders – because you like to use Spanish midfielders like Xavi and (Andres) Iniesta – he’s like this type of player, this capacity but please he needs to take in a very positive way my words.”

While that Xavi comparison certainly seems far-fetched given how the Spurs midfielder’s career has stalled, Winks still hasn’t lost his calmness in possession and has averaged a superb career passing accuracy of 90.2% – far better than any Leeds player who has played more than 90 minutes this season.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Latest Leeds transfer rumours and news”]

Being able to retain possession and keep things ticking over in the middle of the park would give Bielsa’s side a bit more control in the engine room and help them build out from the back to feed the likes of Raphinha and Jack Harrison further forward.

Victor Orta could strike gold in the Spurs gem this summer.

Meanwhile, Leeds could sign a real upgrade on Patrick Bamford in this star…
