Gylfi Sigurdsson emerged as Carlo Ancelotti’s real hero as Everton beat Southampton 1-0 on Monday night to edge closer to the Champions League positions.

The Iceland international was given the nod to open the action at Goodison Park in favour of star summer signing James Rodriguez, who failed to make the matchday squad due to a minor knock.

Rodriguez had registered his fourth assist of the Premier League season at Anfield, as the Colombian’s perfectly weighted pass found Richarlison to open the scoring against Liverpool inside the third minute of the Merseyside derby.

Sigurdsson wasted little time in filling Rodriguez’s boots at home to Southampton, with the £16m-rated playmaker feeding the ball through to Richarlison to net his third goal in as many top-flight fixtures.

It is the Brazilian’s best run in front of the net all term, having previously failed to score in successive league ties since hitting home against Crystal Palace and Arsenal in February 2020.

Richarlison struck his fifth goal of the Premier League season and 11th in all competitions after rounding Fraser Foster inside the ninth minute, having been found by Sigurdsson with an inch-perfect pass through the Southampton backline.

Everton are now level on 43 points with sixth-placed Liverpool and could move inside the top-four of the Premier League standings with a win over relegation-threatened West Bromwich Albion on Thursday night, during what is the Blues’ game in hand.

The Toffees often struggled to establish any momentum during Monday night’s win over the Saints, yet Sigurdsson regularly found pockets of space to operate in and prove a creative force.

No player for either side offered close to the level of creativity that Sigurdsson provided, with the 31-year-old delivering four of Everton’s five key passes. His efforts further accounted for double the tally offered by the visiting outfit (2), per WhoScored.

Rodriguez has only provided more than three key passes in two Premier League fixtures since making his Toffees debut at Tottenham Hotspur in September, with five in the north London affair and an additional five registered in defeat to Leeds United in November.

With two of Sigurdsson’s four key passes also leading to big chances created, the £100,000-per-week maestro was additionally named as SofaScore’s Man of the Match with an eight out of 10 rating – no other Everton player created a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Rodriguez last achieved a SofaScore match rating above Sigurdsson’s 8/10 during a Premier League fixture in November’s 1-0 defeat to Marcelo Bielsa’s Whites, when the 29-year-old was awarded an 8.1 rating.

Sigurdsson making sure Everton were not left wanting more without Rodriguez on the field ensured he emerged as Ancelotti’s real hero, and not goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

The England number one was called on to produce a string of strong saves in the second half as Southampton sought to salvage a draw, denying the likes of Jannik Vestergaard to the misery of Danny Ings who kicked the post in frustration.

After initially arriving at Leeds United on a loan deal, it’s fair to say Illan Meslier has grown into his role as the club’s undisputed number one goalkeeper.

The 20-year-old initially started life at Elland Road as Kiko Casilla’s back-up, but after the Spaniard’s lengthy ban, Meslier grabbed his opportunity with both hands, and now finds himself as the Premier League’s side main man in between the sticks.

A lot of credit goes towards director of football, Victor Orta, for first spotting his talent and bringing him to Elland Road in the first place, and then securing him on a permanent basis in the summer.

In fact, reports had even suggested that Marcelo Bielsa’s side had paid just £5m to sign him on a long-term deal – absolute pittance when you think of the ridiculous sums of money that gets bandied about in the modern market.

And speaking on The Inside Elland Road Podcast, The Yorkshire Evening Post’s Graham Smyth said: “He’s been great, hasn’t he? For a 20-year-old, for £5m, I mean Victor Orta – it feels almost illegal what he’s done getting a player of that quality at that age for £5m, remarkable business.”

With 67 saves this season in the Premier League, Meslier ranks joint-third in the competition, a real testament to his work given Leeds’ games have been dominated by end-to-end action – hardly the kind of football that goalkeepers or defender would want.

And aside from his ever-improving shot-stopping, the young Frenchman’s ability with his feet has always been one of his standout attributes, with former Whites striker Jermaine Beckford raving: “The kid is incredible. I was watching the game (against Everton) and there were a couple of moments, (Dominic) Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison and James (Rodriguez) had chances, but Meslier stood in their way. His distribution is one of the best in the Premier League.”

At just 20, Meslier could quite conceivably go on to be Leeds’ keeper for at least the next decade or so if he keeps progressing and developing like he has done in his time at the club thus far. There’s no questioning that his signing has been an absolute dream deal for the Yorkshire side.

Leeds will face another stern test on Sunday when they take on Leicester.

The Whites have won just once in 2021 so far while the Foxes are flying high in the top four of the Premier League. Therefore, Marcelo Bielsa should consider springing a surprise.

On the chalkboard

There wasn’t much to criticise from Leeds’ win over Newcastle in midweek. Though, if there was one area to be picky about it was at left-back.

Gjanni Alioski didn’t endure the best of outings and that was evident when he was hauled off with over half an hour left after receiving a yellow card.

The left-back was caught in possession and then to prevent a counter-attack, had to bring his man down. It was typically reckless from Alioski, someone who has proven to be a liability on more than one occasion this season.

He was torn apart by Dan James at Old Trafford last month and for every good performance the defender turns in, it seems to be followed by a succession of dismal outings.

The solution

There is one clear answer to Leeds’ problems here; drop Alioski. We’ve banged this drum before on FFC but if that happens it could give Bielsa a way to bring Mateusz Klich back into his starting XI.

The Pole sat out against Newcastle and thus missed just his second ever league game since Bielsa took charge of the Whites. Stuart Dallas started at his expense in the middle of the park but if Leeds drop Alioski, the Northern Irishman can slot in on the left instead.

As a result, Klich would be able to resume his place in the middle of the park. It would be surprising and incredibly rare for the manager to spring a tactical change like this. For starters, the Argentine doesn’t tinker or make changes unless he really has to, generally preferring to operate with the same starting XI’s. Secondly, his Polish enforcer has been a little out of form.

Speaking about the Poland international last week, Noel Whelan told Football Insider: “He hasn’t been himself for over a month now. He’s not doing too much. He is drifting through games and that’s worrying.”

That came after Whelan admitted that new recruits needed to be signed this month: “I think a central midfield player because Klich has gone off the boil, he seems to be drifting through games at the minute and not having that stamp on the game that he normally has, so I think we need more backup there and quality.”

That being said, Klich has played so many successive games for Leeds because Bielsa loves him so much. He might be out of form but being dropped from the XI last time out should have acted as a wakeup call and a reality check.

At the end of the day, he’s one of their most creative players and in 2020/21, only Jack Harrison (1.9) has achieved more key passes per match than Klich (1.8).

If we’re going by general assists, the latter tops the charts for Leeds this term. No player has created more goals (5) for his teammates than the Pole.

Thus, if Leeds are to have any chance of breaking down a tough Leicester defence, they need Klich, and they need him at his creative and effervescent best.

Steve Bruce has confirmed that Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson will face six to eight weeks on the sidelines with a “devastating” hamstring injury.

That’s according to the Mirror, who quote the Toon boss as revealing that his £20m summer signing from AFC Bournemouth will miss the best part of the next two months.

Wilson could miss up to seven Premier League fixtures as a result of the issue, starting with Monday night’s trip to Chelsea and subsequent meetings with Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and potential relegation rivals Wolves, West Brom and Brighton.

Wilson sustained a deep hamstring tear during last weekend’s 3-2 win over Southampton, that also saw United lose Javier Manquillo for multiple weeks and Fabian Schar for several months.

Manquillo is now expected to miss around six weeks with a muscular injury, while Bruce has confirmed that Schar underwent surgery on Tuesday after sustaining knee ligament damage that the defender will hope does not rule him out of this summer’s Euros.

As for Wilson, the striker underwent scans to assess his hamstring injury earlier this week after being forced to limp off the field during the first-half of last week’s win over the Saints, which returned sombre news for Bruce.

“Unfortunately for Callum, it is a tear to the hamstring and that could be six to eight weeks,” the Toon boss said. “The aftermath of a fantastic victory has blighted us. Losing the centre-froward for weeks is a bitter pill to swallow.

“We hoped it was a grade on two to three weeks, but it is worse than that. We have to be without him for six-eight weeks, but we won’t put a time scale on it. It is devastating news for us. It takes time, when you are pace and power as Callum is. His rehab will have to be spot on. We need him back as quick as we can.

“His performance at Everton [last month] was terrific. We are all struggling with muscle injuries, the sheer number of games and no rest between. Without Callum, it will be hard core. He has been terrific. It will be difficult to replace him.”

The scale of the task now facing Bruce is colossus, with Newcastle left with a mammoth obstacle in their way toward securing Premier League survival for another season.

No Magpies player has been as involved in United’s attacks this term than Wilson, who has offered 2.0 shots a game over his 21 top-flight appearances, in a side that has only offered on average 9.7 each league fixture played to date, per WhoScored.

His efforts have also returned the most goals (10), while Miguel Almiron’s brace against Southampton was enough to move the Paraguayan second on the scoring chart at St. James’ Park with four – only Jeff Hendrick, who’ll be suspended against Chelsea, has also scored twice or more.

Jonjo Shelvey, who boasts one goal to his name, has taken the second-most shots per game with 1.6 but only 0.5 of those have come inside the box, where Wilson is the only player to have offered over 1.0 among those who have featured more than once for Bruce thus far.

Joelinton, who has also only scored once, has taken 1.2 shots a game over his 17 outings, while fellow strikers Andy Carroll (1.1) and Dwight Gayle (0.7) will hope to improve their output in Wilson’s absence.

– Tenho facilidade de atuar em diferentes posições e isso me torna um jogador melhor e mais versátil. Comecei minha carreira como lateral, mas fui migrando naturalmente para a meia. Hoje, atuo com tranquilidade nas duas funções. Gosto de fazer a leitura do jogo e entender de que maneira posso contribuir melhor em determinadas situações – explicou.

Gustavo é uma das principais armas ofensivas do Brusque, que o contratou justamente por essa característica.
