West Ham struck gold with Ben Johnson

West Ham United are loving life under David Moyes.

It was only 18 months ago that the Irons were staring down at the prospect of relegation but with one game to spare, the Scotsman steered the sinking east Londoners to safety.

Fast forward to now, the Hammers are in a healthy position, perhaps their strongest-ever, at least in recent years.

They have qualified for the Europa League knockout stages and sit third in the Premier League after a stunning 3-2 victory over Liverpool on Sunday afternoon, putting them tied on points with defending champions Manchester City and above the Reds as well as United.

And it hasn’t been easy.

West Ham no longer have the services of Jesse Lingard, Michail Antonio has served time on the sidelines through suspension, whilst Moyes has been dealt with numerous injury problems, the latest being Angelo Ogbonna’s devastating ACL tear picked up in that aforementioned win.

Similarly, first-choice Vladimir Coufal has endured a stint on the treatment table but in his absence, young Chadwell Heath academy graduate Ben Johnson has deputised so superbly that he may well have usurped the Czech Republic international in the pecking order.

The 21-year-old gem has started each of the Irons’ last four league games, in which they’ve recorded four successive wins, including results against Spurs and Everton, too, whilst he even scored against Aston Villa. He was also part of the starting XI for their Carabao Cup wins over United and holders City.

In fact, six of his eight appearances this term have seen Moyes’ side keep a clean sheet, so he’s proving to be an influential player.

“He’s a bit of utility player for us, he’s been here for a while,” claimed the Scotsman, via football.london. “He’s a really important player for us. In the squad and the group he’s really important. Quite often we’ve brought him on and used him in different roles and he’s had a chance to have some games under his belt, he’s not let us down and scored a good goal in midweek.”

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has also previously lauded him as “excellent”, whilst club insider ExWHUemployee claims he’s “very popular with the players” and that he’s “got everything.”

Johnson’s form has seen him rank as West Ham’s fourth-best performer on the season with an average WhoScored rating of 7.18, with only Declan Rice, Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio rating higher.

No player is managing more tackles per game (three), whilst he ranks second in the squad behind Rice for interceptions per game (1.6), too.

On that evidence, he’s going to be a hard man to take out of the starting XI and as such, Moyes and the Hammers may have struck gold over his emergence.

South Africa might have scared India batsmen, says Steyn

‘India have a weakness in the middle order’ – Steyn

Dale Steyn has carried on from where he left off in Johannesburg. This time, though, with words. After bowling a sensational spell of seam and swing against India in the series opener, Steyn has said some of the Indian batsmen were frightened, and that their bowling needs an injection of pace if they are to bother South Africa. India were thrashed by 141 runs at the Wanderers on Thursday, a spicy pitch awaits them at Kingsmead, and Steyn feels there might already be scars that will go beyond the first ODI.”I would say so,” Steyn said when asked if South Africa’s bowlers might have frightened the Indian batsmen enough to last them through the remainder of the tour. “I would definitely say so. I didn’t see many of our guys walking off the field with bloody fingers or ice packs on ribs, so it definitely was a wake-up call for the Indians. It’s not Mumbai where the ball doesn’t get higher than the stumps. It’s going to be hard to play here.”But they are not the No. 1 ODI side in the world for no reason. As MS [Dhoni] said in his pre-match [press conference], they have toured the world and have come to South Africa a couple of times, so maybe give them a week or two, one or two more games and they will start getting used to it before the Test matches. But [it was] definitely an eye-opener for them. Because it didn’t look like that when they were bowling to us.”While Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli toughed it out against Steyn and the new balls, Steyn was not quite impressed with what followed in the middle order. “I think our intensity the other night really blew them away,” Steyn said after the mandatory disclaimer that he expected the visiting batsmen to come back hard. “I think we also showed them that they have a weakness in the middle order. [Suresh] Raina, [R] Ashwin, Yuvraj [Singh], other batters in the end, they didn’t really look like they wanted to get in line. So hopefully we can exploit that a little bit more. But they have batters who can play and score. Shikhar’s [Dhawan] another guy who can really bat. So we are prepared for that too. Everyone is a target, to be honest with you.”Steyn’s summation of Indian bowling wasn’t flattering either. When asked what advice he would give to the Indians, he said, “I am really not going to give them any advice, you know. I think they are doing fine.”If you really want to look at it though, with the ball they lack someone who can really bowl with pace up there. They need that one guy there bowling so. They have got Ishant [Sharma] sitting on the sides, he is the one guy that can bowl over 140kmph. And we have got really good batters like [Jacques] Kallis, [Hashim] Amla, [Quinton] de Kock, [AB] de Villiers in some good space now. I think you need guys who can spin the ball a mile or can bowl quickly.”Wanderers didn’t offer the turn the other night that Ashwin and [Ravindra] Jadeja could have got, but it did offer something off the deck and pace, and they didn’t have that the other night. We did have it so we kind of blew them away with that. Morne [Morkel] bowled really quickly, [Ryan] McLaren bowled with good pace, and in good areas, backed up by Wayne [Parnell], myself and Lonwabo [Tsotsobe]. So if you don’t have that then you will be struggling in South Africa.”Conditions underfoot promise much of the same. Steyn said he couldn’t tell the pitch from the outfield when he had a look at it from the balcony. However, there might be some respite for India because Kingsmead has lost a bit of its pace over the years. “Conditions are always different here in Durban,” Steyn said. “Especially different from Johannesburg. Bit more bounce in Jo’burg. This wicket has seemed to have got a little bit flatter, a bit slower over the years.”Steyn, though, was a little circumspect about what lay overhead – it has been overcast in Durban since the teams arrived on Friday. “Hopefully we can get a game because there is a lot of rain around here in Durban,” Steyn said. “We discussed it in the morning. We could go out there for 20 overs each, which is a bare minimum and still constitutes as a one-day international. So if there is a bit of rain around, we have to be prepared to face whatever comes.”

Debutant Shami puts India ahead

Mohammed Shami’s reverse swing and West Indies’ self-destruction led to the visitors crumbling after lunch from the promising advantage of 138 for 2

The Report by Abhishek Purohit06-Nov-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsMohammed Shami picked up 4 for 71 on Test debut•BCCI

Post-lunch session. A big partnership getting bigger. Suddenly, the game turns on its head. How often has reverse swing done that to a match on the subcontinent? How often have West Indies self-destructed? The umpires changed the ball after 40 overs at Eden Gardens, the replacement reversed appreciably, and the debutant Mohammed Shami bowled Marlon Samuels and Denesh Ramdin in successive overs. In between those dismissals, Darren Bravo ran himself out and Darren Sammy torpedoed his own counter-attack, and the promising advantage of 138 for 2 lay squandered. Soon, Shami uprooted fellow debutant Sheldon Cottrell’s off stump to end the innings on 234 and finish with four wickets.Shami was the form bowler from the recent ODI series against Australia, and was handed a debut ahead of the experienced Ishant Sharma – who ironically presented Shami with his Test cap – and the quicker Umesh Yadav. And how he repaid his captain’s faith. Shami bowled consistently in the late 130s on a slow pitch, and was a different proposition with the ball scuffed up, finding movement that had not been there for him with the new one.It was a proper bat-first pitch at Eden Gardens, slightly uneven and expected to deteriorate later. There was little threat from the new ball and the lack of pace also hampered the spinners. The West Indies openers, however, failed to capitalise on favourable conditions and departed within the first hour. A tentative Chris Gayle succumbed to Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s away-swing, and the solid Kieran Powell was done in on the pull by Shami’s pace.Samuels and Bravo put on 91 for the third wicket to bring West Indies back. Bravo came in to defend and defend, while Samuels took care of the scoring, hitting 56 of his brisk 65 in boundaries before his dismissal sparked the collapse. Every now and then both batsmen attacked the spinners, who were not much of a worry despite the odd delivery turning or kicking or keeping low. Samuels continued to pierce the off-side field against the quicks. It was Samuels’ desire to keep hitting off the back foot that gave India the opening. Even as Samuels set himself up for a punch through the off side, Shami swerved one through the gate from good length. In the next over Bravo, having resolutely blocked his way to 23 off 96, decided now was the time for a casual single to square leg, even though there was a fielder there and though Shivnarine Chanderpaul wasn’t interested. Suicidal was the only word for it. In the next over, with so much reverse happening, West Indies realised having a keeper batting at No 6 wasn’t ideal. Feet not moving, Ramdin was caught on the crease as another one zipped in late. He belatedly tried to chop it, but it had sneaked through by then.At the other end, Pragyan Ojha was cursing his luck. He’d had Samuels, on 60, dropped by Dhoni, then had a close leg-before shout turned down against Sammy. But Ojha did not have to wait for too long because the West Indies captain gave it away. With long-off on the boundary, Sammy tried sending Ojha over, only to find the fielder with precision. In his 199th Test, Sachin Tendulkar gave a disappointingly moderate Eden crowd another reason to cheer at the stroke of tea. Landing his legbreaks and googlies with control in his opening over, Tendulkar trapped Shane Shillingford – also dropped by Dhoni off Ojha – in front for his 46th Test wicket. Chanderpaul, playing his 149th Test, was left to survey and salvage something from another familiar West Indies collapse. He tried to do it his way, turning the strike over and trusting the tail. But R Ashwin eventually sneaked an offbreak past his back-foot defence to end his resistance on 36.India’s openers brought the deficit below 200 in the 12 overs they faced. Tino Best and Sheldon Cottrell, in particular, worked up plenty of pace but did not make the batsmen play enough. They also overdid the short ball, which, despite their speeds, was safely defended or avoided on this pitch. Shillingford sent down a few steady overs, but India’s real test will come when the ball starts to reverse.

Leco planeja novo treino aberto no São Paulo; Andrés descarta

Sussex reach quarter-finals

A round-up from the latest Friends Provident Trophy matches, as Sussex booked their place in the quarter-finals with a win over Yorkshire

Group CMichael Yardy led from the front to guide Sussex into the quarter-finals, with a 60-run win over Yorkshire at Hove. Yardy cracked a crucial 68 in Sussex’s 269 for 7, stroking four fours and providing substance to an innings that was threatening to slip away at 161 for 4. Michael Vaughan hit his second one-day fifty of the season as Yorkshire made a promising start to their chase, but he was one of four batsmen to fall to Chris Nash, who returned career-best figures of 4 for 40.Group BA fine 69 from Neil Dexter, along with blistering contributions from Phillip Hughes and Owais Shah, helped Middlesex chase down 277 to beat Warwickshire at Lord’s and keep their quarter-final hopes alive. Warwickshire’s challenging target was set up by Jonathan Trott’s superb 120 and a typically bullish innings of 68, from 44 balls, by Neil Carter. Middlesex lost Billy Godleman early before Hughes (57 from 43) and Shah (63 from 58) steadied their chase, but they then lost Dawid Malan and Eoin Morgan within one ball of each other. And when Trott pulled off a stunning one-handed effort to send Gareth Berg packing, Middlesex’s quarter-final hopes appeared to be over. But Ben Scott suddenly rediscovered his touch with 28 from 18 balls, and along with Dexter helped Middlesex over the line with three balls to spare. This was Hughes’s last match this season for Middlesex, a remarkable period in which he 882 runs, and he could yet be back at Lord’s for next season.Scotland finally registered a win at the seventh attempt, beating Kent in a rain-affected match in Edinburgh. Batting first, Kent stumbled against Sean Weeraratna who removed both Martin van Jaarsveld and Joe Denly, and they crawled to 65 for 4 after 19.5 before the rain came thundering down. Set a Duckworth-Lewis revised total of 77 from 18 overs, Scotland breezed home with Fraser Watts belting 45 from 38, and Gavin Hamilton an unbeaten 18.Group AA record unbeaten third-wicket stand of 260 between Sean Ervine and Michael Carberry eased Hampshire to a 77-run win over Ireland at Southampton. Ervine smashed 167 off 140 balls, a record one-day score on the ground, while Carberry chipped in with 121 out of a total of 316 for 2. Ireland made a game reply, led by 94 from Kevin O’Brien, but were always well off the pace and finished on 239 for 9.Group DDerbyshire kept their quarter-final hopes alive with a three-wicket defeat of Essex at Chelmsford. The win was very much down to Stuart Law and Dan Redfern. The pair came together with Derbyshire on 79 for 5 chasing 193, and they added 106 to take their side to the brink of victory. Two late wickets for Danish Kaneria, who finished with 5 for 32, could not prevent Derbyshire getting home with 16 balls in hand. Earlier, James Foster’s 71 had helped rescue Essex from 102 for 6.
