Ballance double sets up innings victory

Gary Ballance set up Mid West Rhinos’ innings victory with the first double century of his career•Zimbabwe Cricket

The English county imports made the biggest splash in the second round of games in the Logan Cup, Yorkshire’s Gary Ballance and Hampshire’s Liam Dawson, in his first season of Zimbabwean domestic cricket, putting in eye-catching performances. While the Zimbabwe-born Ballance set up a massive victory for Mid West Rhinos, however, Dawson’s century and seven-wicket haul was not enough to inspire Mountaineers, who sank to their second defeat.Ballance began his second Logan Cup season with a punishing double-hundred – the first of his career – in Mid West Rhinos’ massive innings-and-215-run win over Southern Rocks at Masvingo Sports Club. Michael Chinouya’s five-wicket haul had kept Rocks to just 150 in their first innings after they opted to bat, after which Ballance combined with Malcolm Waller to add a remarkable 341 for the third wicket. The pair cracked 49 boundaries between themselves as Southern Rocks, driven to a state of exhaustion, used no less than nine bowlers in an attempt to break through. Ballance eventually departed for 210, while Waller reached a career-best 174 before he was caught off the bowling of Richmond Mutumbami – the Rocks wicketkeeper who temporarily removed his gloves and pads to send down a few overs.Rocks found it impossible to recover from the battering, former Zimbabwe Under-19 offspinner Simon Mugava completing an eight-wicket match haul as they were bowled out for a paltry 137 on the third day.At Mutare Sports Club, Mountaineers slumped to a 132-run loss to Mashonaland Eagles despite a first-innings 110 and career-best 7 for 51 from Dawson. Dawson had carried Mountaineers’ response to Eagles’ first-innings total of 267. His partnership of 70 for the third-wicket with Hamilton Masakadza was the only stand of note as Mountaineers conceded a 38-run lead.Sikandar Raza (74) and Forster Mutizwa (83) extended Eagles’ advantage with a 65-run partnership in the second innings, but after both men had been removed by Dawson’s left-arm spin the rest of the batting fell in a heap. From 114 for 1, Eagles collapsed to 212 all out with all but one wicket falling to spin. The effectiveness of the slow bowlers suggested the fourth-innings chase would be a difficult one, and as Mountaineers set off in pursuit of 251, that proved to be the case. Ray Price was given the new ball and eight wickets fell to spin – with Tinotenda Mutombodzi taking 4 for 25 – as Mountaineers were bowled out for 118 to send Eagles to the top of the points table with their second win in as many games.

Aston Villa dynamo Trezeguet was Dean Smith’s only silver lining vs Southampton

Just how do you explain a series of results that has seen Aston Villa go from thumping Premier League champions Liverpool 7-2, to losing back-to-back games against Leeds and Southampton, conceding at least three in each?

Dean Smith’s side produced a woeful first-half performance on Sunday afternoon against the Saints, and the visitors caught them cold in spectacular fashion.

First, Jannik Verstergaard put Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men in front, before a pair of James Ward-Prowse specials saw them go 3-0 up at the break. After Danny Ings seemed to have put the gloss on Southampton’s win, Villa scored three in the final half-hour to claw back some pride.

But when Smith looks back at the video on Monday morning to assess how things fell apart, he certainly won’t have too much to praise about his team. Apart from Trezeguet.

The Egypt international, who was benched in favour of summer signing Bertrand Traore, came on mid-way through the opening period, and provided the injection of work-rate and fearlessness that Villa desperately needed.

Whilst he didn’t pick up a goal or an assist, the winger was his side’s most dangerous player over the course of the game. As per Sofascore, he fired off four total shots on goal, with three of them drawing saves from Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.

He also attempted five dribbles and sent in two crosses over the course of the game, although the one area that may concern him is the fact that his teammates didn’t look to give him more of the ball.

He had just 30 touches in total after coming on, and made only eight passes. Trezeguet was the one real spark for Villa – excluding the final few minutes when they really turned up the heat – and Smith will have been left suitably impressed by the way his substitute came on with the right attitude.

He’s now got a major call to make as to whether he brings him back in from the start next week against Arsenal.

Hafeez leads fightback after Mawoyo's marathon

Tino Mawoyo became the third Zimbabwe batsman to carry his bat, to lead Zimbabwe to an impressive 412 on the second day, before Mohammad Hafeez helped Pakistan assert themselves in the final session

Tino Mawoyo became the third Zimbabwe batsman to carry his bat, leading Zimbabwe to an impressive 412 before Mohammad Hafeez helped Pakistan assert themselves in the final session. The Queens Sports Club pitch remained benign for the second day running, and Mawoyo cashed in after overcoming a bout of nerves in the 90s to build on the platform the home side set on the first day.Smart stats

This is only the 17th time that Zimbabwe have played more than 150 overs in an innings. The previous such instance was more than seven years ago.

Tino Mawoyo became only the third Zimbabwe opener to carry his bat in Tests, after Mark Dekker and Grant Flower. All three accomplished the feat against Pakistan.

Mawoyo faced 453 balls in his innings, which is the fourth-highest by a Zimbabwe batsman in Tests.

Aizaz Cheema is one of 19 Pakistan bowlers to take four or more wickets in an innings on Test debut.

It’s the first time Saeed Ajmal has bowled more than 50 overs in a Test innings, and the 63rd such instance for a Pakistan bowler. Eight of the last ten have been by Danish Kaneria.

Mohammad Hafeez’s 79 is his highest Test score since his century against West Indies in November 2006. In the 20 innings in between, he averaged 18.52.

Pakistan looked deflated in the morning but an energetic burst from the debutant Aizaz Cheema in the lead-up to tea helped helped them recover some lost ground. They then surged past 100 in the final session as the action shifted up a gear, after having meandered under Mawoyo’s watch.Hafeez was entertaining and elegant, but also enjoyed a slice of luck against the new-ball pair of Brian Vitori and Kyle Jarvis, who repeatedly attacked the stumps. Jarvis struck early, trapping Taufeeq Umar with a fullish ball that straightened towards middle and leg to leave Pakistan 8 for 1.That should have become 16 for 2 in the next over when Vitori squared Hafeez up with a delivery that left him, but Brendan Taylor spilt the edge at second slip. It was a smart set-up from Vitori, after Hafeez had punched the two previous balls, both inswingers, down the ground. The reprieve did not affect Hafeez’s mindset and he continued to seek boundaries every time the bowlers missed their lengths. Despite his intent, Zimbabwe retained three slips and bowled full. He responded with a series of pleasing drives through the off side, and pulled well when the odd ball was dropped short. Azhar Ali was mostly a spectator as the 50-run stand came up in the 11th over. Ray Price’s introduction slowed down the pace, as he offered generous flight in search of the edge, but Hafeez latched onto Vitori’s short balls to motor past his half-century. Late in the day, he whacked Greg Lamb for six over midwicket, before taking Price for two boundaries in the last over to cap Pakistan’s strong comeback. That Pakistan managed their resurgence was down to Cheema’s intent in the lead-up to tea. He concentrated on bowling a a full length to skittle out the tail, but not before Mawoyo had accumulated relentlessly, interspersing phases of stonewalling with sparks of fluency.Mawoyo began the day with two early boundaries off Sohail Khan to enter the 90s, but he slowed down thereafter as his tormentor-in-chief, Saeed Ajmal, came into the attack. Mawoyo faced 166 balls in all from Ajmal, without once looking like he could spot the doosra. Ajmal’s offbreaks did not turn too sharply, but mixed up with the odd indecipherable doosra, the stock delivery too became a threat. On 98, Mawoyo wandered out of the crease in an attempt to reach the flight, but the doosra turned past the outside edge into Adnan Akmal’s gloves. Akmal closed the gloves a touch late and inexplicably, failed to break the stumps with the ball lodged between his wrists. That wasn’t Mawoyo’s only moment of indecision in the 90s. He was also troubled by Junaid Khan outside off stump repeatedly. Junaid’s persistence accounted for Craig Ervine, who fended a short ball back to Junaid for his first Test wicket. Mawoyo hung on, and after 13 agonising balls on 99, inside-edged towards midwicket to reach his 100. With the milestone out of the way, he showed more freedom, driving and pulling Ajmal for fours before lacing Cheema down the ground.Azhar’s part-time legbreaks did not bother Mawoyo after lunch, and he picked up easy boundaries off him to kick off the most fluent session of his innings. Lamb too was at ease, thumping an Azhar half-tracker through point as Zimbabwe passed 350. Ajmal kept searching, but his doosras did everything except go to hand after taking the edge. Lamb misread his first ball after drinks, nicking one past slip for four, but Ajmal trapped him two balls later with the offbreak. Lamb had made 39, one of four top-order batsmen to fall within sight of a half-century.Cheema’s perseverance with the inswinger finally bore fruit when Price inside-edged to short leg, giving the bowler his first Test victim four days short of his 32nd birthday. Mawoyo remained immovable at his end, his footwork and defence increasing in decisiveness through the day. He brought up his 150 by nudging his 422nd ball to square leg. Ajmal should have had Vitori next ball, but Junaid put in a lame effort and failed to reach the top-edge as it swirled towards him at deep square leg.Armed with a roughed-up ball against the tail-enders, Cheema resorted to a full length for the first time in the innings. He eventually got Vitori edging low to slip, before bowling Jarvis and Chris Mpofu. But that was not before Mpofu had mowed Ajmal over midwicket to take Zimbabwe past 400, a creditable effort considering that barring Tatenda Taibu, none of their batsmen could read the offspinner.

Lancashire storm into semi-finals

A bruising innings of 44 from 31 balls from Karl Brown proved the difference between the teams as Lancashire overpowered Sussex to progress to the Friends Life t20 finals day at Edgbaston

A bruising innings of 44 from 31 balls from Karl Brown proved the difference between the teams as Lancashire overpowered Sussex to progress to the Friends Life t20 finals day, at Edgbaston on August 27. Brown cracked four sixes and a four in his innings, including one vast swipe over midwicket that landed in the road, as Lancashire’s total of 152 for 8 set up a comfortable 20-run win.Brown’s acceleration was abetted by the day’s top-scorer Paul Horton, who finished unbeaten on 49 from 45 balls, as Lancashire overcame the loss of three wickets in the Powerplay. Stephen Moore smacked a four off the first ball of the match, only to edge Ollie Rayner’s follow-up to the keeper; Steven Croft swiped flat-footedly at Chris Liddle to be caught-behind for 19, before Liddle held onto a juggling catch at short cover as Rana Naved’s slower ball accounted for Tom Smith. From 45 for 3, Brown and Horton turned the tide of the innings with a 61-run stand in 7.4 overs. Monty Panesar produced a superb spell of four overs for 15 in which he did not concede a single boundary and deceived Brown into holing out to long leg, but Sussex’s other spinners found it harder to contain Lancashire’s aggression, as Mike Yardy and Rayner went for 60 runs in six overs.Sussex’s prospects suffered a further blow in the midst of the onslaught as their key batsman Murray Goodwin was forced to leave the field after splitting the webbing of his right hand while dropping a fierce drive off Brown. He was eventually able to bat, but was clearly hampered as he emerged at No. 7 to make 10 from nine balls.Sussex’s run-chase was by this stage faltering. From the second ball of the innings Lou Vincent was caught behind off Sajid Mahmood for a golden duck, and Farveez Maharoof made it 8 for 2 in 11 balls when Ben Brown was bowled for 2. Ed Joyce was then run out for 10 to deepen Sussex’s gloom at 31 for 3, and though Chris Nash and yardy staged a revival with a 41-run stand for the fourth wicket, they were both dismissed in the space of three balls by Gary Keedy’s left-arm spin.Without Luke Wright’s lower-order prowess to fall back on, Sussex’s challenge was effectively over at 73 for 5 with a hobbled Goodwin at the crease. Rana made 34 from 27 balls before he fell in the final over as a 6,500 full house went home disappointed.Lancashire, who had fallen in each of their three previous Twenty20 quarter-finals, will now face Leicestershire in the finals day on August 27. Hampshire, the reigning champions, will face last season’s beaten finalists, Somerset.
