Warm-up games moved to SSC

The Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) in Columbo will host the two World Cup 2011 warm-up matches that had been scheduled to take place at Pallekele in Sri Lanka

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Feb-2011The Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) in Columbo will host the two World Cup 2011 warm-up matches that had been scheduled to take place at Pallekele in Sri Lanka. The ICC said in a statement that it had also considered Hambantota as an alternate venue, but heavy rain in the southern Sri Lankan region ruled out that option. The two games, Sri Lanka versus the Netherlands on February 12, and Kenya versus the Netherlands on February 15, will be day games. This does not affect the three tournament fixtures scheduled to take place at Pallekele in March. The decision to move the games from Pallekele was made following a recommendation by ICC pitch consultant Andy Atkinson after he inspected the venue on Wednesday. Heavy rain in the region had affected the preparation of the pitches.

Aston Villa fans pay homage to Dean Smith after reaching club landmark

On Thursday, Dean Smith celebrated one year in charge of Aston Villa.

And what a 12 months it has been! When he joined the club at the start of October, with former Chelsea captain John Terry as his assistant, the Villans were 15th in the Championship table and had won just three of their first 12 games of the campaign.

However, by the time the 46 matches were done and dusted, the Midlands outfit had risen to fifth in the table to make it into the play-offs, giving themselves a chance of promotion.

That is just what they earned, beating Derby County in the final at Wembley to make it to the promised land. They currently sit in 15th place in the top tier.

As you would expect, the club’s Twitter page paid homage to the 48-year-old on the anniversary, and it gave the team’s supporters the perfect opportunity to share their love for their boss.

Sheffield Wednesday fans react to Gary Hooper’s latest move

Former Sheffield Wednesday striker Gary Hooper has finally found a new club following his release in the summer.

The 31-year-old has joined New Zealand outfit Wellington Phoenix, who operate in Australia’s A-League with the likes of former Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor and ex-Football League striker David Ball in their ranks.

So far this season, Steven Fletcher has stepped up to the plate as the Owls’ top goalscorer after netting five goals in ten Championship appearances.

Over four seasons at the club, Hooper netted 31 times in 89 matches, and it is clear that several of the Hillsborough faithful still miss his presence up top.

One supporter claimed the 5 foot 9 forward was the best finisher he had ever seen in south Yorkshire while another stated he was still reeling from his departure.

‘Cracking’ and ‘amazing’ were two other words used to describe the former Celtic man.

While one further member of the Wednesday support wish they had seen a Hooper and Fletcher partnership this season.

Here’s the best of the reaction:

Hyderabad’s chase got off to a shaky start, with three wicket falling early, but half-centuries from Aqeel Anjum, Rizwan and Lal Kumar in the middle order gave them a chance.

Quase no fim, oAilton me faz aquela jogada.

Estou bem no mata-mata, tenho cinco gols no campeonato.

E fui titular no Flamengo, São Paulo, Santos…

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa needs to be careful with risky subs

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Off the Bench series, which places in-game managerial decisions and squad selections under FFC’s microscope.

Leeds bounced back from a tough result against Charlton last weekend to defeat previously unbeaten West Brom on Tuesday.

It appears that the mini-crisis is over at Elland Road following a run where they’d only won one of their last five games in all competitions.

Surprisingly, Marcelo Bielsa opted for an unchanged line-up, one which demonstrated his faith in the players he has at his disposal.

It paid off as they won 1-0 but it didn’t come without its troubles as the Baggies had the best of the possession, something that’s been a rarity for a Leeds team who have averaged over 60% this term across all matches.

It was in the final quarter of the match that they were really up against it, however.

Snapshot

Leeds opened the scoring in the first half courtesy of Gjanni Alioski. Jack Harrison held the ball up well on the left-hand side and then laid it on a plate for the left-back to fire into the bottom corner.

The Whites had 19 shots but failed to score another goal as Slaven Bilic’s men aimed to extend their unbeaten run.

Bielsa chose to go incredibly defensive in the final 15 minutes as he replaced Tyler Roberts, who had already been brought on, with Luke Ayling.

Off the bench

This was a strange substitution to make, especially considering Roberts had only come on at half time. He was making just his second appearance of the campaign while Ayling came onto achieve his first minutes in the senior team since getting injured.

It was a risky call given presumably his lack of match fitness but it was one that looked to give the west Yorkshire side more control in midfield.

Stuart Dallas moved slightly further forward with Leeds looking weaker since Jamie Shackleton was withdrawn because of injury.

Why are Leeds fans the best in the country? Find out in the video below…

However, putting on another defender only invited more pressure on Leeds’ defence.

Bielsa made a similar call against Derby just over a week ago when he introduced Barry Douglas for an attacking player in Pablo Hernandez.

The Rams consequently scored and it might easily have happened again on this occasion. It was a risk but it was one that eventually paid off as they kept a clean sheet.

When Ayling came on, West Brom had 75% of the possession and achieved four of their ten shots, via WhoScored. Because of the lack of players to drive them up the pitch, they were unable to get on the ball regularly.

Leeds have now had two times to go in for the kill this season but have instead opted to sit back. This time it worked but against Derby it didn’t. The Argentine must learn from what happened in that game and be careful.

Russell backs Prior experience

Jack Russell, England’s wicketkeeper at the 1996 World Cup, believes that Matt Prior’s aggression, maturity and vocal presence behind the stumps make him the right man for the job

Jack Russell, England’s wicketkeeper at the 1996 World Cup, believes that Matt Prior’s aggression, maturity and vocal presence behind the stumps make him the right man for the job as the team prepares to return to the subcontinent for another tilt at a trophy that has eluded them for nine tournaments and 36 years.Prior had not been part of England’s limited-overs setup since the tour of Bangladesh in February 2010 when he was last month named as the surprise inclusion in England’s World Cup 15, at the expense of the Surrey wicketkeeper, Steven Davies. He overcame the embarrassment of back-to-back ducks in his first two matches of the one-day series in Australia to produce a hard-hitting 67 from 58 balls in their 21-run win in the fourth game at Adelaide, and he is expected to open the batting alongside Andrew Strauss when England’s World Cup campaign gets underway in Nagpur on February 22.Russell, who spent much of his own England career vying for the wicketkeeping duties with Alec Stewart, believed that Prior’s time away from the team and his determination to reclaim the role would stand him in good stead for the tough campaign that awaits.”I think the period out of the one-day side probably helped him, and it got his appetite back,” Russell told ESPNcricinfo’s Switch Hit podcast. “It made him realise it’s not a given that he’s in this team, so he went away and worked hard, and he’s a very fine all-round cricketer now. He’s an aggressive character who takes the game to the opposition, he’s got that freedom mentally, and the belief that he can go out there and do his stuff with bat and gloves.”While Russell sympathised with Davies, who had seemed a shoo-in for the World Cup after performing competently throughout the one-day series in England last September as well as the first ODI against Australia in Melbourne, he believed that, at the age of 24, the younger man still had plenty to learn at the highest level – particularly when it comes to the cajoling in the field that is the duty of the man with the gloves.”From a wicketkeeping point of view Prior is more of a driver, a leader in the field than the lad Davies, who’s a little bit younger, and is still searching for his game if you like,” said Russell. “Davies hasn’t quite crossed those mental bridges yet, which allow him to feel he is running the show in the field. He is more quiet, whereas Matt will be in your face a bit more, and drive and push things forward, and you need guys like that when you’re playing at that level, especially in a place like India.”Russell’s own career was notable for his vocals behind the stumps, not least during his final years with Gloucestershire in the early 2000s, when he and Mark Alleyne were the heart and soul of their trophy-hoarding one-day side. “It was the last third of my career when I really worked out my game,” he said. “I’d done my apprenticeship, and Matt’s in that situation now. It’s his job now to start pushing and shoving everyone else.”Prior produced a near-faultless performance in the Tests against Australia, in which he claimed 23 catches and rounded off the series with his maiden Ashes hundred. “You are running the show in the field, so it’s hard to kick other people’s backsides if you’re not doing the job properly yourself,” said Russell. “The bottom line is you never lose sight of the fact that you’ve got to catch every ball, and if you do that you can start bawling and shouting at everyone else.”At the minute young Davies is still finding his feet at international level, but he needs to go up another gear in terms of adding a bit more aggression to his game with the bat and the gloves.”Fifteen years have now elapsed since the last World Cup in the subcontinent, and as was the case in 1996, England go into the tournament on the back of an arduous winter campaign, rounded off by a heavy and humbling one-day series defeat. Russell, however, believes the current squad will be strong enough to shrug off the indignity of their ODI setback, in the manner that he and his team-mates were unable to do when they were crushed 6-1 by South Africa all those years ago.”I think this team could well be a stronger group mentally to deal with the fact we’ve lost the one-day series,” said Russell. “Playing in Asia [compared to Australia] is like playing on another planet, so if you make a good start you can draw a line under what’s gone on before and take it as a fresh start. I’m pretty sure there’s enough mental strength in that group and the back-up staff will make sure the attitude is spot-on. I’d like to think there’s no reason why we can’t win the World Cup.”Jack Russell is compiling a book of paintings of English county grounds, due for publication by 2012
