A number of Liverpool supporters are delighted for Caoimhin Kelleher after Jurgen Klopp confirmed he would start next month’s Carabao Cup final.

The Reds outplayed Arsenal at the Emirates on Thursday night, completing a 2-0 win to book their place in the final.

Jurgen Klopp’s men will come up against Chelsea at Wembley on February 27th, as two of the biggest teams in the country lock horns in a huge game.

Kelleher has played for the majority of Liverpool’s Carabao Cup run, making three appearances and starting at Arsenal, but plenty would have expected a switch to clear number one Alisson for the final.

It looks as though Klopp will show great faith in the 23-year-old, however, confirming on Friday [via Paul Joyce on Twitter] that he will keep his place at Wembley.

O lateral-direito Fagner tem um bom argumento contra os críticos: os números. Nos últimos quatro anos, desde que ele retornou ao Corinthians, ninguém no clube teve mais êxito individual do que ele baseado nas estatísticas e prêmios recebidos. Nesta segunda-feira, foi eleito o melhor lateral-direito do Campeonato Brasileiro em duas premiações (CBF e Bola de Prata, da ESPN). Já havia sido, pela terceira vez consecutiva, o melhor de sua posição no Campeonato Paulista. Na direita, só dá ele.

Os prêmios, somados aos títulos do Paulista e do Brasileiro pelo Timão, marcam 2017 como um ano perfeito para o jogador, que já havia levado o Nacional em 2015. Mas para quem acha que eestá bom, o lateral-direito espera manter a pegada para conquistar ainda mais títulos em 2018. O Super Fagner tem fome de taça.

– O que falta são mais títulos. O jogador tem de ter essa ambição, de querer sempre mais. Um clube grande como o Corinthians, cada vez que você ganha, vai deixando seu nome na história. É isso que quero e projeto nos próximos anos – analisou Fagner, em entrevista exclusiva ao LANCE!.

Os próximos anos devem ser mesmo no Corinthians, já que o lateral-direito já acertou verbalmente a extensão de contrato por quatro anos. Só falta assinar, o que ele fará quando voltar de férias em janeiro. Enquanto isso, é comemorar as conquistas coletivas e individuais.

– Fico feliz por conquistar os objetivos em equipe, o mais importante. Em consequência disso, feliz de poder estar entre os melhores ou o melhor da posição. É a consolidação de um trabalho. Um ano perfeito, de você poder ter um desfecho do ano com título brasileiro e sendo o melhor da posição. Perfeito – afirmou o lateral.

O Super Fagner também tem fome de bola. Mesmo sendo considerado maldoso por alguns adversários e, mais uma vez o lateral termina o ano com mais de 50 jogos pelo clube – fez 56. Esse número se mantém desde 2014, fazendo do camisa 23 um dos atletas que mais atuaram no período. Desde que o lateral retornou, o Timão disputou 275 jogos, 219 com participação de Fagner (54, 51, 58 e 56). Ele se aproxima até do goleiro Cássio, que fez 227 partidas. O lateral também fez quatro jogos pela Seleção Brasileira este ano, período no qual desfalcou o time de Fábio Carille.

Criado na base do Corinthians, Fagner se consolida como um dos mais experientes do grupo. Com 226 jogos disputados e sete gols, fica atrás apenas de Danilo (338 em oito temporadas) e Cássio (319). Está à frente dos experientes Jadson (151) e até de Jô, mesmo somadas as duas passagens do artilheiro (179 jogos).

A assiduidade é a união de dois fatores. Primeiro, a regularidade técnica, refletida nos títulos individuais e posição no time. Desde o título brasileiro de 2015, Fagner é o único que nunca perdeu a posição. Mesmo Cássio chegou a ficar na reserva de Walter ano passado, e Jadson foi para o banco nas últimas rodadas do Brasileirão deste ano. Segundo, a preparação. Desde a virada de 2014 para 2015, quando se apresentou com condições abaixo do que considerava ideal, o lateral passou a ter uma programação diferente no período de férias. Nada de abusar na alimentação e muito academia.

– Fico feliz por essa sequência, de poder cada vez mais me firmar. Tem de pensar em se firmar cada vez mais, A gente sabe que o futebol é muito corrido, dinâmico, sabemos que nunca está bom. Eu me cobro muito, sou muito exigente comigo mesmo, e acho que é por isso. E agora vou me cuidar para voltar em um ritmo bom – afirma.

Faminto, o Super Fagner agora vai descansar com a certeza de que 2017 foi perfeito e que em 2018 lá estará ele na lateral do Timão. Resta saber se também estará na Rússia…

Foi melhor no título brasileiro de 2015 ou de 2017?
Os dois anos foram maravilhosos. O problema em 2015 é que na reta final tive uma lesão, perdi alguns jogos. Esse ano foi espetacular, sem lesão, onde eu pude atuar bastante vezes. Gratificante, você em quatro anos de Corinthians poder fazer mais de 50 jogos por temporada, média de 50 jogos. Trabalho de se cuidar, ter cuidado extracampo também para estar sempre bem.

Como é este trabalho extracampo?
Dia a dia. Você se conhecer, conhecer seu corpo, aprimorar alguma coisa para não ter problema. Hoje em dia o futebol, como está tão dinâmico, intenso, é preciso ter os cuidados. Isso é bom para ter uma carreira mais longa.

Esses números são uma resposta para quem critica sua presença na Seleção?
De certa forma, sim, né? Fazer um ano como fizemos esse ano, nos últimos três campeonatos paulistas, fui o melhor da posição três vezes. Agora no Brasileiro sou o melhor da posição. De certa forma é uma resposta para quem achou que não tinha capacidade para a Seleção, de certa forma as pessoas estão vendo o trabalho.

Como foi usar a faixa de capitão no jogo do título brasileiro e passá-la ao Danilo depois?
Para mim, me senti privilegiado por vestir a camisa do Corinthians em disputa de título. E ter a confiança do Carille para ser o capitão, como em outras oportunidades. Eu me sinto privilegiado. Quando houve o terceiro gol e teve a paralisação, Léo Príncipe comentou comigo que o Danilo iria entrar, então achei o mais justo essa homenagem

Essa sua presença constante nas listas dos melhores também não denota uma escassez de laterais no Brasil?
Sinceramente, não sei avaliar. Acredito que o futebol brasileiro precisa ter os conceitos da posição. Muitas vezes, o lateral é eficiente quando vai pra frente e faz gols. E às vezes ele vai muito bem defensivamente e não é reconhecido. Precisamos parar e pensar se realmente existe essa escassez. A primeira função do lateral sempre foi defender e a partir daí apoiar lá na frente. Então revendo esses conceitos da posição, tenho certeza de que vamos ver que temos ainda bastante lateral e bastante para surgir. Com o Tite na Seleção, que é um cara que prioriza muito a parte tática, conceitos de linha de quatro, tenho certeza de que ele avalia muito isso na hora de fazer uma convocação.

Tournament heavyweights Delhi Daredevils crashed to a 98-run defeat against an inspired Mumbai Indians outfit that seemed determined to set the lopsided head-to-head record straight and, in the process, went to the top of the points table. Quickfire sixties from Sachin Tendulkar and Saurabh Tiwary took Mumbai to an imposing 218 but a batting line-up capable of overhauling the biggest of targets was bowled out with more than three overs to spare.Delhi were already handicapped by the loss of Gautam Gambhir to a hamstring pull early in the match so it was up to the middle order to anchor a big chase. But the loss of a steadying hand in Gambhir showed up as the likes of Virender Sehwag and Tillakaratne Dilshan performed well below expectation. The backup for those heavyweights had little time in which to plot and execute a Yusuf Pathan-like counterattack.Dilshan began the chase on an audacious note by slapping the first ball over mid-off for four. It was an emphatic way to get off the mark after two consecutive ducks, and Delhi motored along at a rate marginally faster than Mumbai after three overs. Mumbai had to dislodge at least one of the opening duo of Dilshan and Virender Sehwag, and the first breakthrough came through Lasith Malinga in the fourth over. After firing it in the blockhole to keep Dilshan under check, he bowled a slower ball and sent the off stump for a spin as the batsman swished at thin air.The expectations on Sehwag only increased but he was the first victim of double-strike by Dwayne Bravo in the seventh over. Trying to clear long-off, he made contact off the toe-edge of the bat straight down Ambati Rayudu’s throat. Four balls later, AB de Villiers dragged one onto his stumps and the momentum had firmly swung in Mumbai’s favour. A flurry of boundaries by Dinesh Karthik – three in a row – raised some hope, but he too joined the exodus, courtesy a brilliant stumping down the leg side by Aditya Tare. When Manhas perished in the tenth over, Delhi had lost half their side, and with Gambhir indisposed, the match had ceased to be a contest.The pitch was nothing like the minefield which forced the abandonment of the one-dayer between India and Sri Lanka a few months ago. Evenly paced, Tendulkar showed just how easy it was to get to the pitch and pick the gaps with deft touches and delicate clips. It was similar to the way he started his innings in Gwalior, where he scored a memorable 200, squirting the ball past the gaps effortlessly.Farveez Maharoof’s one-dimensional bowling – overusing the legcutter – made it easier for Tendulkar to plan his shots. After slicing Maharoof past backward point, he made Delhi pay for not placing a slip as he guided the next ball to third man. He then chipped down the track, got inside the line and played a glorious on drive past midwicket to give Delhi some anxious moments.He brought up his fifty, off just 23 balls, with a paddle to fine leg. Mishra had Tendulkar caught at long-off by the substitute Yogesh Nagar, who was earlier in the news for pulling off a one-handed blinder at mid-off to get rid of Sanath Jayasuriya. Filling in for Gambhir, Nagar had to propel himself backwards a long way but managed to time his leap to perfection.Significantly, Tiwary and Rayudu didn’t allow things to drift after Tendulkar departed. The over after his dismissal went for just three but the pair ensured they picked at least one boundary in every over during their 71-run stand, in just short of seven overs. If Tendulkar was all nonchalance, Tiwary and Rayudu were all about brute power. Tiwary employed the slog sweep against the spinners, staying in the crease and muscling three sixes. Rayudu used his feet a lot more, regularly chipping down the track to clear the rope. Mishra tried firing it flatter and shorter with the hope of getting the ball to shoot through but the batsmen were alert enough to slap them away.By the time Delhi dislodged the pair, Mumbai were already on 193 with a little more than two overs left. Promoting Tiwary and Rayudu over the two West Indians – Bravo and Pollard – had proved to be a productive move. The Caribbean duo combined to push the score to 218 – the highest in this tournament so far – which was more than enough to stamp their dominance.

After signing Lucas Digne on a permanent deal and Philippe Coutinho on loan, Aston Villa have now been linked with a move for Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma.

After news of their interest surfaced, it was reported by The Athletic that the Seagulls have no intention of selling the player this month but would consider a bid of around £50m for the 25-year-old.

With this in mind, it seems as though a claim has now emerged which should excite a lot of Villa supporters.

What’s the latest?

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist Dean Jones had this to say regarding Villa’s reported interest in the Brighton ace: “The Bissouma interest is real and Villa aren’t put off by his price tag.

“They’ve wanted him since the start of the window and have been able to show him how ambitious they are – so there is growing confidence this could happen.”

Fans will be buzzing

Since joining Brighton back in 2018 from Lille in a deal worth a reported fee of around £15m, the Mali international – who is currently valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt – has gone on to make 111 appearances for Graham Potter’s team across all competitions, highlighting his importance to Brighton on the pitch and why they would only accept a hefty bid for him in any potential transfer deal.

This season has seen Bissouma prove why the club have put such a lofty price tag on him, with the 25-year-old earning himself an overall performance rating of 7.13 from WhoScored. That comfortably makes him Brighton’s highest-rated player and would put him incredibly close to topping Villa’s rankings too if it weren’t for John McGinn, who has a rating of 7.14/10.

Given how Villa have not been shy in spending money to bring new players to the club such as Digne or the trio of Danny Ings, Leon Bailey and Emi Buendia during last summer’s transfer window, that certainly makes a big-money move for Bissouma a possibility.

With reports suggesting that Villa’s owners would provide financial backing for Gerrard in the transfer window, a potential move for the Brighton beast this month would certainly show just how much they are willing to invest in the squad, given how a £50m transfer for the midfield would smash through their current transfer record of £33m that they spent on Buendia.

Considering that the Mali midfielder could well be one of Villa’s best performers, given his WhoScored rating in the context of Gerrard’s current squad, fans of the Midlands club could be buzzing to hear that there is “growing confidence” of landing the 25-year-old.

Borussia Monchengladbach’s Denis Zakaria ‘seems [Manchester] United bound’, according to The Birmingham Mail’s Ashley Preece. 

The lowdown

Zakaria will apparently be able to leave Gladbach this month for as little as £6million.

That’s because the 25-year-old’s contract is due to expire at the end of the current season, and it seems that the Bundesliga outfit are looking to cash in while they still can.

Zakaria is a Switzerland international who’s capable of operating as a defensive midfielder and as a centre-back.

Sport Bild journalist Christian Falk says United have ‘made an offer’ to the player’s camp and ‘would pay for a transfer in [the] winter’ rather than waiting until he’s a free agent.

In a fan Q & A, it was put to Preece that Aston Villa, on the hunt for a midfielder after an injury to Marvelous Nakamba, would ‘surely’ be in for Zakaria given his reported price tag.

But the journalist replied that Zakaria appears to be heading for Old Trafford, and so The Villans might have to focus on landing Brighton and Hove Albion’s Yves Bissouma instead.

The verdict

This update is really exciting for United fans. Data from FBRef.com shows that Zakaria is stylistically similar to West Ham United’s Declan Rice, producing a high volume of interceptions, blocks and dribbles.

Indeed, as of 11 January, only RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol boasted a higher dribbling success rate in the Bundesliga (among those who had attempted 30 or more).

Rice has been labelled a ‘priority target’ for The Red Devils, but David Moyes has indicated that West Ham would demand more than £100million.

Daniel Vettori, the New Zealand captain, blamed his side’s poor batting performance for the defeat in the third ODI at Hamilton, which gave Australia 2-1 lead in the five-match series.”We put a bit too much pressure on ourselves with losing wickets and I suppose, put too much pressure on Scott [Styris] and Gareth [Hopkins] to pick up the slack then be aggressive near the end,” Vettori said. “It was a total that was 40 or 50 runs short and we couldn’t put any pressure on Australia because of it.”New Zealand reached 146 for the loss of five wickets, in the 30th over, before Styris and Hopkins recovered partially through a 67-run stand, but the hosts could not last the full duration and were bowled out for 245 in the 47th over. Four of their top five batsmen got off to starts but did not take on the responsibility to bat long, a trait that concerned Vettori.”I suppose it’s just taking ownership of your innings and realising that 20s and 30s and even 50s and 60s aren’t good enough against Australia. You need guys to kick on.
