LUFC handed injury boost ahead of AFC

With two defeats and ten goals conceded in their two previous league games, Leeds United are suffering from a brutal number of players out injured at the moment, such as Kalvin Phillips, Patrick Bamford, Liam Cooper, Jamie Shackleton, Dan James, Rodrigo and Pascal Struijk.

This doesn’t put them in a great place to take any points from their next two league games against an in-form Arsenal on Saturday and then against Liverpool on Boxing Day.

However, speaking in his latest press conference ahead of the weekend clash against the north London club, Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa dropped some news that will surely please a lot of fans.

What’s the latest?

Bielsa revealed that defender Robin Koch is back in contention to be involved in the game on Saturday after being out of action since August with an injury to his pubis bone.

Given the injuries to Cooper, Shackleton and Struijk, it seems to be an ideal time for Koch to come back into the team and help them strengthen up at the back after their recent defeats and the manner in which they conceded seven goals against Manchester City last time out.

Since joining the Yorkshire club back in the 2020 summer transfer window from German club SC Freiburg on a four-year deal, the 25-year-old, who is currently valued at £15.3m according to Transfermarkt, has made just 18 appearances for Leeds across all competitions after struggling with a knee injury that kept him out of action for a large chunk of last season.

In the league games he did appear in last term though, Koch showed just what a useful defensive figure he can be for the team and why the club chose to sign him in the first place by racking up an average of 1.8 clearances per game, 1.6 tackles and 1.6 interceptions as well as winning 58% of the duels he was involved in.

To put those numbers into perspective, fellow Leeds centre-back Diego Llorente has an average of 1.1 tackles per game and 1.2 interceptions per game in the league so far this season, which suggests that the Spaniard could do with having Koch next to him to keep things tighter at the back.

Moving forward, whether Bielsa decides to play Koch against Arsenal or not, if he can stay fit for the rest of the season, this would surely be a big boost for the team as a whole and their chances of avoiding relegation by the end of the campaign.

Rauf stands in for sick Benson

Asad Rauf has gone from TV umpire to on-field official for the second day of the Adelaide Test after Mark Benson was unavailable due to being “unwell”. Benson stood with Ian Gould on the opening day but the match referee Chris Broad confirmed on the second morning that Benson was unable to take his place.Bruce Oxenford had been the fourth umpire and was duly promoted into the TV official’s chair, while Andrew Collins was brought in as fourth umpire. Oxenford was in the action immediately as he upheld Gould’s lbw decision from the first ball of the day after Darren Sammy asked for a review. It had been a challenging opening day for Benson, who was asked to make several tight decisions and twice had his not-out caught-behind calls for Shivnarine Chanderpaul reviewed by the Australians. Both were close decisions and Rauf gave the first not out but overturned the second call, sending Chanderpaul on his way.It is not the first time Benson has been unable to take his place on the field. He was to officiate in Australia’s recent one-day international series in India but was taken ill on the eve of the first match, leaving two Indian officials in charge, and did not take any part in the series. Benson was also forced to leave the field during a Test in Durban in December 2006 due to heart palpitations and he later had minor heart surgery.

Graeme Aldridge's 11 keeps ND on top

A review of the second round of games in the 2009-10 Plunket Shield

Cricinfo staff20-Nov-2009

Record figures: Graeme Aldridge•Getty Images

After a ten-wicket win in the first round of matches, Northern Districts (ND) beat Central Districts (CD) by nine wickets in Whangarei. Set a modest target of 126 on the third day, thanks in no small part to the seamer Graeme Aldridge’s match haul of 11 for 145, ND were eased home by Michael Parlane’s unbeaten 66. With this win ND remained top of the pile with maximum points after two rounds.CD had resumed the third day trailing at 178 for 5, and soon slipped when the overnight pair of Mathew Sinclair and Bevan Griggs was removed. Aldridge got Griggs to nick one behind early in the day, giving Peter McGlashan his record 12th catch. Aldridge picked up 5 for 96 as CD were bowled out for 310. That achievement, after he took 6 for 49 earlier to shoot CD out for just 94, made his the best bowling performance of all time against this opposition – surpassing DB Clarke’s 10 for 78 record set in Whangarei in 1967-68.ND made 279 in their first innings, with Anton Devcich and fellow rookie Jono Boult making important half-centuries, before Aldridge enjoyed a second outing against CD.Peter Fulton’s important runs for Canterbury in Rangoria helped in a 115-run win over Otago as well as earn him a recall to New Zealand’s Test side. Fulton made 172 in the first innings to help Canterbury post 440 and then hit 77 as they declared on 265 for 5 in the second, setting Otago a massive 471 to win. They were bowled out for 355.The impetus for the win was Canterbury’s first innings total. Fulton’s century was a massive contribution, after the openers Rob Nicol (75) and Michael Papps (51) launched a strong start. The next highest score was 35 as Sam Wells took five wickets. Shane Bond enjoyed a return to the four-day format with 4 for 63 to help keep Otago to 235, after which Canterbury posted 265 for 5 in 73 overs. At the Basin Reserve, Wellington’s Cameron Merchant converted an unplanned promotion into his maiden first-class century to help the hosts beat Auckland by 99 runs. A week after he was dismissed for 99, Merchant hit 108 for 128 balls on a flat track to put Wellington in a winning position heading into the final day.Wellington, who declared at 280 for 5 in their second innings with a 362-run lead and after already securing two first-innings points, their first of the season, achieved the win by bowling out Auckland for 263.Auckland, having opted to field, lost ground when Wellington made 356 with Mathew Bell (91) and Josh Brodie (103) adding 151 for the opening wickets. Auckland then declared their first innings at 274 for 9, conceding first-innings points. The opener Richard Jones hit a century while Jeetan Patel took 4 for 73.

Ex backs Bayo claim out of West Ham

Reliable club insider ExWHUemployee, via the West Ham Way Website, has now backed recent transfer news involving Clermont Foot striker Mohamed Bayo.

The Lowdown: West Ham interested…

As first reported by le10sport, West Ham are interested in signing the colossal 6 foot 2 centre-forward for manager David Moyes as they now turn to Ligue 1 in search of a new striker.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

An alternative to Michail Antonio has long been on the agenda for the club ever since former club record signing Sebastien Haller completed a move to Ajax last January.

Bayo, as per reports, is one of the names being targeted and that has now been reiterated by a very reliable source in ExWHUemployee.

The Latest: Ex backs claims…

As per The West Ham Way, Ex backs le10sport’s original claim that West Ham are indeed interested – going on to say that the 23-year-old has been watched by the club.

The Ligue 1 frontman is apparently attracting their interest as they assess the whole of the French top flight for possible targets.

The Verdict: Good candidate?

Scoring a career total of 48 goals so far, impressive numbers given his age, we believe Bayo shouldn’t be ruled out as a candidate.

He made waves in the French second division last season, playing a heavy hand in Clermont’s promotion to the top flight with 22 goals and eight assists in 38 appearances.

He’s continued in that vain in the big leagues, bagging nine goals already so far, and he could only get better given his age.

He could also come to the London Stadium with great possible sell-on value, with the only caveat being his lack of experience in an extremely competitive division like the Premier League.

West Ham fans hail youngsters

A number of West Ham supporters have been hailing a host of Hammers youngsters after they played against Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League.

David Moyes’ side faced a dead rubber contest in Europe on Thursday evening, having already secured qualification into the knockout stages.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

It afforded Moyes the luxury of naming a much-changed starting lineup at the London Stadium but it was one that had more meaning to it than normal.

During the night, a total of eight academy graduates took to the field, while there were also five full debutants and two debutants, as highlighted by an official club post.

It was further proof that West Ham are going in the right direction both on and off the pitch, despite the 1-0 defeat, as the latest batch of Hammers youngsters look to mark their mark.
