West Ham struck gold with Ben Johnson

West Ham United are loving life under David Moyes.

It was only 18 months ago that the Irons were staring down at the prospect of relegation but with one game to spare, the Scotsman steered the sinking east Londoners to safety.

Fast forward to now, the Hammers are in a healthy position, perhaps their strongest-ever, at least in recent years.

They have qualified for the Europa League knockout stages and sit third in the Premier League after a stunning 3-2 victory over Liverpool on Sunday afternoon, putting them tied on points with defending champions Manchester City and above the Reds as well as United.

And it hasn’t been easy.

West Ham no longer have the services of Jesse Lingard, Michail Antonio has served time on the sidelines through suspension, whilst Moyes has been dealt with numerous injury problems, the latest being Angelo Ogbonna’s devastating ACL tear picked up in that aforementioned win.

Similarly, first-choice Vladimir Coufal has endured a stint on the treatment table but in his absence, young Chadwell Heath academy graduate Ben Johnson has deputised so superbly that he may well have usurped the Czech Republic international in the pecking order.

The 21-year-old gem has started each of the Irons’ last four league games, in which they’ve recorded four successive wins, including results against Spurs and Everton, too, whilst he even scored against Aston Villa. He was also part of the starting XI for their Carabao Cup wins over United and holders City.

In fact, six of his eight appearances this term have seen Moyes’ side keep a clean sheet, so he’s proving to be an influential player.

“He’s a bit of utility player for us, he’s been here for a while,” claimed the Scotsman, via football.london. “He’s a really important player for us. In the squad and the group he’s really important. Quite often we’ve brought him on and used him in different roles and he’s had a chance to have some games under his belt, he’s not let us down and scored a good goal in midweek.”

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has also previously lauded him as “excellent”, whilst club insider ExWHUemployee claims he’s “very popular with the players” and that he’s “got everything.”

Johnson’s form has seen him rank as West Ham’s fourth-best performer on the season with an average WhoScored rating of 7.18, with only Declan Rice, Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio rating higher.

No player is managing more tackles per game (three), whilst he ranks second in the squad behind Rice for interceptions per game (1.6), too.

On that evidence, he’s going to be a hard man to take out of the starting XI and as such, Moyes and the Hammers may have struck gold over his emergence.

Rain washes out third day's play

Despite the valiant efforts of the head groundsman Steve Rouse and his staff, rain forced the abandonment of the third day’s play at Edgbaston

The Bulletin by Alex Brown at Edgbaston01-Aug-2009England 116 for 2 (Strauss 64*, Bell 26*) trail Australia 263 (Watson 62, Onions 4-58, Anderson 5-80) by 147 runs

Despite the valiant efforts of the head groundsman Steve Rouse and his staff, rain forced the abandonment of the third day’s play at Edgbaston. Umpires Rudi Koertzen and Aleem Dar conducted a series of field inspections throughout the day, but persistent afternoon rain prompted play to be officially cancelled at 2.40pm. Having lost five sessions of play across the first three days, and with more rain forecast for Monday, the chances of a result in the third Test are remote. Sunny periods are, however, predicted for Sunday.Should the heavens clear long enough to allow the outfield to dry, England will resume on 116 for two, still trailing Australia’s first innings total by 147 runs. Andrew Strauss (64 not out) and Ian Bell (26 not out) denied the Australians access to the England middle-order on Saturday with a 56-run partnership. As the few hardy spectators left Edgbaston after braving the conditions for over three hours, the puddles widened and deepened under depressingly leaden skies. The groundsmen have barely stopped since Thursday, and have more hard work ahead of them if play is to resume on schedule tomorrow.

Jean-Philippe Mateta told he can leave

Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira is reportedly set to sanction the January exit of striker Jean-Philippe Mateta after a disappointing spell on English shores.

What’s the story?

According to The Sun, Vieira has already lost faith in the 24-year-old after just a few months at the helm in south London, opening the door for him to return to parent club Mainz 05 in the winter window.

The report states that: “Patrick Vieira will clear striker Jean-Philippe Mateta to leave Crystal Palace in the next window and cut short his loan.

“The Frenchman has failed to fire and has been told he is not part of the club’s future plans and his move from German side Mainz will not be made permanent.”

Palace fans will surely be delighted

Mateta arrived at Selhurst Park in January 2021 on an initial 18-month loan deal with an option to buy, with Palace paying an initial £2.7m loan fee.

The Eagles have an option to make the move permanent for a further £13.4m, but that only becomes an obligation if the former France U21 international has started 15 Premier League games.

However, it now seems as though the capital club are set to offload Mateta just 12 months into his stay in the Premier League following several underwhelming showings.

In seven top-flight outings last term, the 6 foot 2 colossus found the back of the net on just one occasion under the tutelage of former boss Roy Hodgson, and things have gone from bad to worse during Vieira’s short reign.

He’s been awarded just 61 minutes of Premier League action throughout 2021/22 and was substituted just after the hour mark when awarded a rare start against Watford in the Carabao Cup.

Therefore, the Palace fans will surely be delighted to learn that Mateta’s nightmare is expected to end earlier than previously planned.

His departure will free up funds for Vieira to strengthen his current squad over the coming months and prevent the Eagles from being forced to sign Mateta on a permanent basis.

And, in other news…Forget Zaha: Crystal Palace beast who won 7 duels was Vieira’s real hero vs Man City

Ashraful keen to continue as captain

Mohammad Ashraful has said he will not resign from the captaincy despite Bangladesh’s dismal showing in the ICC World Twenty20

Mohammad Ashraful has said he will not resign from the captaincy despite Bangladesh’s dismal showing in the ICC World Twenty20 where the side crashed out in the group stages. Against calls for him to resign, Ashraful said he was used to criticism and that the support from the team gave him confidence to continue leading.”I have no such plan [to quit the captaincy]. The board has given me this job and it’s up to them whether they let me continue or not,” Ashraful told the on arrival in Bangladesh. “But I want to continue as captain because I am enjoying the role and trying my level best. They [the BCB] can remove me if they thought that I have lack of quality to lead the team but I am very much confident and clear about my position.”A rusty Bangladesh, returning from an international lay-off of nearly five months, lost both their group stage matches, including one to Ireland. Their only two wins on tour came during the warm-ups, against minnows Scotland and Netherlands. About a dozen furious supporters rallied at Dhaka airport, carrying placards and chanting “resign, resign” at Ashraful, who apologised for Bangladesh’s failure. On the day Bangladesh went down to Ireland at Trent Bridge Ashraful had termed it “worst match they played on tour” and without a doubt it was. Bangladesh had a terrific opportunity to make the Super Eights, needing to beat only Ireland, but failed.”I can understand that the fans are very much disappointed and angry after the defeat against Ireland,” said Ashraful. “I don’t mind with that when someone demanded my resignation as a captain because even my family is upset with our performance. I can apologise for it.”But I think it’s unwise to take a final decision after a one match performance. One should understand that our performance was not bad in England except the Ireland match. And I don’t think under my captaincy the team’s performance declined rather we have some encouraging performances and there was a sign of improvement in the team’s performance.”Jamie Siddons, Bangladesh’s coach, had slammed the team’s showing after the loss to Ireland and Ashraful said he had spoken out of frustration. “This kind of questions didn’t rise when we played good cricket in the practice matches and even against India in the first Group match. I think he told this out of frustration because it was really painful to accept the fact that we didn’t qualify for the second round.”I’m not afraid of any criticism because it’s nothing new to me. I don’t mind when people criticise me because they have high expectations of me,” said Ashraful. “But what I believe that my team is in a right track and I am fortunate enough that my colleagues are supporting me.”Ashraful was appointed captain in June 2007 and his job was extended in February this year until the conclusion of Bangladesh’s next assignment, a short tour of the West Indies beginning next month, which includes two Tests, three ODIs and a Twenty20.

O jogo mostra as coisas. Estou tranquilo. Com esses jogadores (Jadson, Rodriguinho e Clayson) o rendimento será melhor – disse o técnico do Corinthians, justificando a escalação do estrangeiro.

-O Carlinhos vem trabalhando, eu respeito hierarquia e grupo.

Sussex reach quarter-finals

A round-up from the latest Friends Provident Trophy matches, as Sussex booked their place in the quarter-finals with a win over Yorkshire

Cricinfo staff18-May-2009

Group CMichael Yardy led from the front to guide Sussex into the quarter-finals, with a 60-run win over Yorkshire at Hove. Yardy cracked a crucial 68 in Sussex’s 269 for 7, stroking four fours and providing substance to an innings that was threatening to slip away at 161 for 4. Michael Vaughan hit his second one-day fifty of the season as Yorkshire made a promising start to their chase, but he was one of four batsmen to fall to Chris Nash, who returned career-best figures of 4 for 40.Group BA fine 69 from Neil Dexter, along with blistering contributions from Phillip Hughes and Owais Shah, helped Middlesex chase down 277 to beat Warwickshire at Lord’s and keep their quarter-final hopes alive. Warwickshire’s challenging target was set up by Jonathan Trott’s superb 120 and a typically bullish innings of 68, from 44 balls, by Neil Carter. Middlesex lost Billy Godleman early before Hughes (57 from 43) and Shah (63 from 58) steadied their chase, but they then lost Dawid Malan and Eoin Morgan within one ball of each other. And when Trott pulled off a stunning one-handed effort to send Gareth Berg packing, Middlesex’s quarter-final hopes appeared to be over. But Ben Scott suddenly rediscovered his touch with 28 from 18 balls, and along with Dexter helped Middlesex over the line with three balls to spare. This was Hughes’s last match this season for Middlesex, a remarkable period in which he 882 runs, and he could yet be back at Lord’s for next season.Scotland finally registered a win at the seventh attempt, beating Kent in a rain-affected match in Edinburgh. Batting first, Kent stumbled against Sean Weeraratna who removed both Martin van Jaarsveld and Joe Denly, and they crawled to 65 for 4 after 19.5 before the rain came thundering down. Set a Duckworth-Lewis revised total of 77 from 18 overs, Scotland breezed home with Fraser Watts belting 45 from 38, and Gavin Hamilton an unbeaten 18.Group AA record unbeaten third-wicket stand of 260 between Sean Ervine and Michael Carberry eased Hampshire to a 77-run win over Ireland at Southampton. Ervine smashed 167 off 140 balls, a record one-day score on the ground, while Carberry chipped in with 121 out of a total of 316 for 2. Ireland made a game reply, led by 94 from Kevin O’Brien, but were always well off the pace and finished on 239 for 9.Group DDerbyshire kept their quarter-final hopes alive with a three-wicket defeat of Essex at Chelmsford. The win was very much down to Stuart Law and Dan Redfern. The pair came together with Derbyshire on 79 for 5 chasing 193, and they added 106 to take their side to the brink of victory. Two late wickets for Danish Kaneria, who finished with 5 for 32, could not prevent Derbyshire getting home with 16 balls in hand. Earlier, James Foster’s 71 had helped rescue Essex from 102 for 6.
