Celtic: Postecoglou must axe Jota

Having joined Celtic on a season-long loan deal this summer, Jota has quickly established himself as a fan favourite at Parkhead.

Indeed, the 21-year-old has left the Celtic Park faithful stunned on more than one occasion over the course of his six Scottish Premiership fixtures so far this season, having already bagged two goals, provided two assists and averaged a highly impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.42 – ranking him as Ange Postecoglou’s fifth-best performer in the league.

The Benfica loanee has also done the business in Europe, registering two assists and creating four big chances in his three Europa League appearances, returns which have seen the £3.15m-rated man average a SofaScore match rating of 7.63.

As such, the Portugal U21 international would not appear to be too far away from being undroppable at present, however, that is exactly what Postecoglou must do when he side visits Hibernian on Wednesday evening.

There are a couple of reasons for this standpoint, the first of which is the fact that Jota is probably deserving of a rest after starting all ten of the fixtures he has been available for – especially when considering the winger has been substituted just once in this ten-game period, with four minutes to go in the 2-0 win over St. Johnstone last time out.

The second, and perhaps more important, is so Postecoglou can afford to hand Mikey Johnston his first start of the club’s 2021/22 campaign, with the winger in rather desperate need of game time in order to regain match fitness after recovering from his hamstring tear suffered in pre-season.

Indeed, the 22-year-old looked incredibly lively when brought on against Ferencvarosi last week and undoubtedly possesses the potential to become yet another exciting option for the 56-year-old Hoops manager to call upon in his Celtic attack this season.

However, unless Jota is dropped at some point in the near future, Johnston’s return will be severely hindered, leading us to believe that Postecoglou simply must sacrifice the player who he himself dubbed an “outstanding” talent for the greater good of his side this Wednesday.

Crystal Palace will target a right back

Crystal Palace made a successful start to their first-team squad overhaul in the summer, but the job is far from complete for new manager Patrick Vieira.

What’s the story?

The likes of Marc Guehi, Michael Olise and Odsonne Edouard replaced several ageing campaigners at Selhurst Park, giving the capital club a far more youthful and exciting look under their French boss.

And now, journalist Tom Barclay believes Palace believes Vieira will be targeting a new right-back over the coming months as he looks to finish off his rebuilding job in south London.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Barclay said: “On the right-hand side at the moment, Joel Ward is a fantastic servant, very reliable, fantastic defensively, but is probably not technically the most gifted.

“And I imagine going forward, in this process that Vieira is trying to put in, they probably want a more creative, technically better right-back playing in that position.”

Crystal Palace fans will be buzzing

Ward has been an admirable performer for Palace ever since he arrived from Portsmouth for just £585,000 back in 2012, scoring five goals and providing ten assists in his 282 appearances in all competitions.

The 31-year-old has become somewhat of a fan’s favourite during his nine-year stay thanks to his full-blooded performances and has been a regular starter under a raft of different managers.

However, the 6 foot 1 beast is far from a modern-day full-back. While Ward is comfortable defending one-on-one against an opposition winger or clearing his lines when a cross comes into the box, he often struggles to provide an attacking threat.

As per SofaScore, Ward has only averaged 0.3 key passes per game this season despite playing every minute, has only completed 43% of his dribbles and managed 0.3 accurate crosses per outing.

His underwhelming performances in the final third of the pitch have seen him receive an average match rating of just 6.67, the 14th-lowest total in the Palace squad.

As a result, a large section of the club’s supporters will surely be buzzing at the prospect of a new right-sided defender joining Vieira’s revolution over the next couple of transfer windows, providing the south London outfit with extra firepower down the flanks.

And, in other news…Never mind Benteke: Palace ace who made 3 key passes and won 7 duels shone against AFC

Sunderland: Fans hail Dan Neil vs Crewe

Many Sunderland fans applauded Dan Neil during Tuesday night’s League One clash with Crewe Alexandra.

Sunderland were looking to make it back-to-back away wins after coming from behind and surviving an Elliot Embleton red card in their 2-1 victory over Gillingham on Saturday.

Second-bottom Crewe, meanwhile, were going in search of just their second league win of the season and their first since they beat Burton Albion 2-0 on 18 September.

Black Cats manager Lee Johnson made one only change for the trip to Gresty Road, and it was enforced. The suspended Embleton made way for Aiden McGeady.

That meant Neil kept his place alongside Luke O’Nien in the 4-2-3-1 system.

Recapping Neil’s performance

Neil’s SofaScore rating of 7.3 was the third-highest in the Sunderland team, bettered only by two-goal striker Ross Stewart and McGeady.

He set-up Stewart’s first goal just after the half-hour mark, completed every pass he attempted and made two tackles.

Wolves target Aaron Ramsey wants EPL return

Rumoured Wolves transfer target Aaron Ramsey is believed to be keen on returning to the Premier League, having struggled for minutes at Juventus.

The Lowdown: Wolves linked with Ramsey move

Bruno Lage is likely to be looking for midfield reinforcements in January or next summer given their lack of depth in that position and Ramsey is a player who has been linked with a move to Molineux.

The 30-year-old has struggled to make his mark at Juventus since leaving Arsenal in 2019, making just one start in Serie A so far this season despite earning £187,000 per week in Turin.

The Latest: Premier League return mooted

According to Calciomercato, Ramsey is open to the idea of returning to England, giving Wolves hope that they could get their man.

It is claimed that he rejected a move to Molineux in the summer transfer window, with Crystal Palace, Everton and Newcastle United all now in the battle to sign him along with the Midlanders.

The Verdict: Shrewd addition?

At 30, Ramsey is still somewhere close to the peak of his powers and he could be an excellent signing for Wolves if they get him, adding quality in the middle of the park.

He possesses a huge amount of experience at club and international level, scoring 17 goals in 67 appearances for Wales and playing more than 400 times combined for Arsenal and Juventus, and he has the all-round game to thrive under Lage. Indeed, his former Gunners team-mate Sol Campbell has dubbed him a “top, top class player” and “very intelligent”.

Ramsey is admittedly an injury-prone figure, but it would be worth taking the risk for someone who has proven himself at the very top level as a frequent Champions League performer.

In other news, one Wolves player has been linked with a January exit. Find out who it is here.
