Twenty-nine days of Test cricket across three months and more than10,000 kilometres has not been enough to split the world’s two bestteams

Twenty-nine days of Test cricket across three months and more than10,000 kilometres has not been enough to split the world’s two bestteams. After the battles at home and away the final outcome wasAustralia 3, South Africa 3. The net result is that Australia arestill the No. 1-ranked team in the world and South Africa remainsecond. The numbers might be soon forgotten but the quality of cricketthat has been on display will be remembered for years to come. The final Test of a long, fiercely-contested and highly-entertainingsummer ended with ten minutes to spare on the fourth day. It was thefirst of the six Tests between these two sides this season that failedto reach the fifth day. Every match produced a result and threw upindividual performances that showed the five-day format at its verybest. At the WACA in December it was Mitchell Johnson’s scarcely believableeight-wicket haul followed by an even more surprising effort from ABde Villiers and the South Africans, who completed the second-highestchase in Test history. In Melbourne it was the arrival of JP Duminy, whose 166 stamped him as a world-class player. At the SCG it was thespine-tingling sight of Graeme Smith walking down the steps with anhour to play, ready to bat with a broken hand to try and save thematch. In Johannesburg it was Marcus North’s century on debut, combined withJohnson’s breathtaking unbeaten 96. At Kingsmead it was the20-year-old Phillip Hughes, who refused to back down against one ofthe meanest pace attacks in the world, and became the youngest man inhistory to score two centuries in a Test. And in Cape Town it was thereturn of the forgotten man Ashwell Prince to score 150 as an opener, followed by a Johnson hundred that was a footnote to the match butpossibly the start of a new chapter for Australia. There wasn’t a boring match among them. The evenness of the overallcontest bodes well for future bouts between these two teams – theseries will become more frequent and will no longer be heldback-to-back – which are, along with India, unquestionably the currentsuperpowers in Test cricket.”Right at the moment that’s the way it is,” Ricky Ponting said. “I’m notsure if that will always remain the same because there are a number ofother very good Test sides out there as well. Whenever you mentionrankings and things you’ve always got to throw India into that as wellbecause they are a very formidable team, mainly at home but they arestarting to put some better performances on the board away from homeas well.

“But as far as we’re concerned, we’d like to think that with whatwe’ve done in the last few months, bringing on a new generation ofAustralian players, that we can maintain a really high level of Testmatch cricket. If we do that and play somewhere the way we’ve playedin the first couple of weeks of this Test match tour and then I thinkwe’ll take some knocking out of that No. 1 ranking.”It was a strange scenario at the end of the Newlands match. Australiahad lost and it was a hefty defeat by an innings and 20 runs. Yetthere were smiles in the dressing room as the match slipped away, inpart because there was the entertainment of Johnson’s hundred but alsobecause the result of the dead rubber could be quickly erased from theAustralians’ memory. As Ponting’s men had their photos taken with the series trophy andlapped up the atmosphere in the twilight with Table Mountain in thebackground, the South Africans also celebrated. It was the second timethey had beaten Australia by an innings – the first came in Durban in1969-70 – and they had rediscovered the form that deserted them aftertheir 2-1 win in Australia. The re-emergence of Prince and centuries to AB de Villiers and thestand-in captain Jacques Kallis gave the Newlands crowd plenty tocheer, as did the nine-wicket match haul from Paul Harris. Kallis saidhis men would celebrate the strong performance but would also reflecton a series that was over too quickly.”[We’re] obviously elated with the win,” Kallis said. “The guys reallypitched up here on day one and we played the type of cricket that weknow we can play. But it is frustrating that we didn’t turn up likethat on the first day of the series. Having said that Australia playedsome really good cricket and put us under pressure.”The difference in the first two Tests was the incisiveness of theattacks on helpful pitches and South Africa’s experienced unit led byDale Steyn and Makhaya Ntini was outbowled by Australia’s young group. It wasn’t until the flat surface in Cape Town that Steyn found thesort of spark he had boasted in Australia..”Sometimes you get on a wicket that helps you as a bowling attack andyou try and bowl teams out and you forget what really works, andthat’s hitting good areas,” he said. “We did that exceptionally wellin this Test match and that’s what was lacking in the first two Testmatches. I think the guys have learnt a lot. On a green wicket you’vegot to bowl exactly the same way as if you’re bowling on a flat wicketand that’s what gets you the wickets, not searching for those miracleballs that pitch leg and hit the top of off.”The miracle balls might not have come for South Africa in this seriesbut across the six Tests there have been more than enough miraculousfeats from both teams. Fans will look back on the past three months asa golden summer for Test cricket.

Strauss finds pride amid failure

It would have been one of their most extraordinary Test victories and for much of the final afternoon in Trinidad England looked as though they could pull it off

Andrew Strauss had plenty to ponder at the end of a series in which England were always playing catch-up•Getty Images

It would have been one of their most extraordinary Test victories and for much of the final afternoon in Trinidad England looked as though they could pull it off. They roused themselves for a final effort to level the series, but as has been the case ever since they subsided for 51 in Jamaica, time ran out.The maths never gave them much of a chance: bowl West Indies out in under 66 overs for less than 240, when for the rest of the series the best they’d managed was to dismiss them in 89.2 overs for 285. However, James Anderson finally gained recognition for his unstinting efforts and Graeme Swann further elevated his status, as England found a combination of pace and spin that lifted the tension to its highest point of the series.”When we got them five-down there was enough happening to suggest it could happen,” Andrew Strauss said. “Taking wickets took a little bit longer after that and we always felt we were just behind where we wanted to be in terms of the time left available. But when that eighth wicket went down there was still a chance.”Even the close finish at the Antigua Recreation Ground it didn’t quite feel like this, perhaps because there had always been a belief that England win that game. Here it was a far more fanciful notion, even after Kevin Pietersen’s best innings of the series, yet suddenly the players and fans started to believe. When the penultimate ball was bowled and the victory hunt was finally halted there were England supporters nearly in tears. Sport does funny things to grown men.Even as they contemplate the loss of the Wisden Trophy for the first time in nine years, the England team should feel they have gained a lot from this performance. This is the sort of cricket of which they are capable. The intensity of the battle brought the best out of them, although Strauss was struggling to see beyond the loss of a series.”I’m pretty dejected really, more than anything because of the way we played today which was outstanding,” he said. “Kevin Pietersen put on an incredible partnership which gave us the opportunity to get more overs at them than we might have possibly thought at the start of the day.”To get them eight-down on a very flat wicket was an outstanding effort from our bowlers, who were tired at the end of a long series. I am very proud of the way the team played today, just dejected that we were not able to force a result.”Two wickets away from victory here and one in Antigua leaves England with endless what-ifs about this series. However, it was one crazy session in Jamaica that proved the difference. “That has ultimately cost us the series,” Strauss said. “That was a freaky situation where we played badly, we weren’t switched on, we got put under pressure and didn’t handle it properly.”We have to understand it is in those small margins in which Test matches are won and lost, and series are won and lost. We can’t afford to be on the receiving end of those sessions.”Strauss consoled himself with the fighting spirit his team showed to lift themselves after that embarrassment. They were shocked, hurting and down after the innings defeat but the batting responded in fine style, albeit on flat surfaces, to ensure they had a chance at various stages of the remaining Tests.”We were very low as a team in Jamaica, understandably after what happened,” Strauss admitted. “The guys were low after that and we played some very good cricket for three Test matches. The fact we were not able to force a result for any of them is disappointing, but I can’t fault the effort and we have learned a lot on this tour in terms of bowling on flat wickets and as a batting unit compiling big scores again, which is something we’ve not done for a while.”In the end, though, it was England’s inability to take 20 wickets that prevented them completing a comeback, although the make-up of the attack in Trinidad showed one of the possible ways forward for the future. One of Strauss’s strengths as captain is that he is realistic, something that didn’t come naturally to Pietersen, and he realises that England don’t possess the complete match-winner with the ball that would make his job so much easier.”The flatness of the wickets meant neither team was able to force the issue in those final three Test matches,” he said. “When you are 1-0 down in the series you want result wickets and we had three that forcing a result on was always going to be very difficult.”We got close and we don’t have a Shoaib Akhtar who can blast people out, or a Murali, so we have to be realistic enough to realise that if we’re going to take wickets consistently it has to be through pressure. If you apply pressure, even on flat wickets, you will find that teams will collapse eventually.”Without or without that killer presence in the attack, the men Strauss had at his disposal almost had enough skill, willpower and determination to pull off an incredible success. That they failed will hurt for a while, but tonight Strauss and his team-mates can feel proud of their efforts to try and pull something out of nothing.

Celtic: Devlin shares ‘huge’ injury boost

Celtic reporter Kieran Devlin is hopeful three injured Hoops stars will be back available after the international break.

The Lowdown: Injury issues

Ange Postecoglou has had a number of injuries to deal with in his first season as Parkhead boss.

He was able to call upon Kyogo Furuhashi and Callum McGregor against Bayer Leverkusen and Aberdeen after the pair returned from injury, however, a number of players are still out.

Josip Juranovic suffered a knock against Dundee United, Greg Taylor underwent shoulder surgery last month and James Forrest has missed the last 10 games.

The Latest: Devlin’s claim

Devlin sent a message on The Athletic’s discussion page for the Aberdeen game on Sunday afternoon.

He admitted he is hopeful the injured trio will be back available after the international break, labelling the 2-1 win and the injury news as a ‘huge boost’.

“Briefly popping in to say that was an important result. First time this team won ugly, and first time a sub in Rogic made a difference. Huge boost going into the international break, hopefully with Juranovic, Taylor and Forrest back available in a fortnight.”

The Verdict: Time for Celtic to kickstart their season

The Hoops have won just three of their last nine games in all competitions, however, with a number of injured players hopefully returning after the international break, it could be the time Celtic’s season steps up a gear.

They still have five games in October when club action returns, four of which are in the Scottish Premiership. Postecoglou may have a near fully fit squad to choose from for those fixtures, and maximum points should see them climb up the table.

It could make or break Postecoglou in Glasgow and he may have no excuses with three potential injury boosts prior to Celtic’s next fixture.

In other news: Celtic are considering boss with similar style to Ange; he played golf with Desmond last week.

Dele Alli badly let Spurs down vs Arsenal

Dele Alli’s north London derby lasted only 45 minutes as Tottenham Hotspur were well-beaten by their arch-rivals at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Lilywhites’ winless run in the Premier League continued at the hands of Arsenal after they leaked three goals for a third successive defeat, whilst their creative problems in attack were equally on show.

A quickfire 24 minutes saw Emile Smith Rowe, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Bukayo Saka find the net before half-time, compounding Nuno Santo to yet another loss.

The Portuguese head coach was evidently frustrated at the break and following the team talk, he made two substitutions, in which Alli was replaced by the more defensively sound Oliver Skipp.

It helped shore up their leaky backline but did their attacking options no favours whatsoever, not that the Englishman was any better.

As per SofaScore, the 25-year-old midfielder was graded as Spurs’ worst player with a 5.9 rating. He managed only 24 touches and 13 passes, both were lower than that of goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, who spent more time picking the ball out of his net than with it at his feet.

Alli, one of the two more attacking options in the engine room, failed to drive possession forward into the Gunners’ half as he did not register a single successful dribble from two attempts, nor did he create a key chance or fire a shot at goal.

The £27m-rated Spurs star was also weak in his battles, winning just one of five duels (20%) up against Mikel Arteta’s midfield, who were wholly dominant in the first half, that’s on top of losing possession eight times from those 24 touches.

That’s once every three touches and once every 5.6 minutes.

“Barely made an impact on the match,” claimed football.london reporter Alasdair Gold, who handed him a 3/10 in his post-match ratings column. The joint-lowest in the starting XI.

Overall, it was a complete passenger-like display from Alli, so it’s no wonder he was hooked over some of the other members of the squad.

Nuno has trusted him to start all six of their league games but in return, he’s only contributed one goal, via Transfermarkt. Therefore, the Portuguese has every right to feel badly betrayed after that result.

Century yet to sink in for debutant North

Cricket throws up a lot of pointless statistics that are forgotten as quickly as they are uncovered but a century on Test debut is the type of record that will be remembered forever

Cricket throws up a lot of pointless statistics that are forgotten asquickly as they are uncovered but a century on Test debut is the typeof record that will be remembered forever. In 132 years of Testcricket, only 18 Australians have achieved the feat, which equates toroughly one every seven years. It’s a truly special accomplishment.Marcus North, the latest man to join the list, has spent ten years waiting in first-class cricket for his opportunity at the highest level. With a late cut for three off JP Duminy, he joined an elite group including Greg Chappell, Doug Walters and Bill Ponsford, and proved that his long apprenticeship had not been wasted. For all the pressure of entering the 90s for the first time in a Test, North said he was less nervous as his century loomed than when he was waiting to get off the mark. He had already seen his fellow debutant Phillip Hughes make a duck and it was the calming influence of the last man to make a century on debut for Australia, Michael Clarke, that eased him through.”I was a bit nervous [as the century approached]. I was probably more nervous waiting to go out to bat,” North said. “I was spending quite a few hours [waiting] before I got my opportunity. But once you get off your mark, that’s always a nice feeling to get off your mark on debut.”Other than that, I think without a doubt the experience that I’ve had at first-class level held me in good stead. Out there with Clarkey at the start, he was extremely good just having a chat every couple of balls or in between overs to kind of calm me down a little bit. I felt pretty balanced out there.”An hour after stumps on the second day, North had not yet had a chance to speak to his wife Joanne and the rest of his family in Perth, where the time-zones meant he brought up his hundred in prime-time. Being ensconced in the team environment meant the enormity of hisachievement hadn’t really hit home.”Don’t get me wrong, I’m pretty chuffed, very pleased to get an opportunity to play for Australia, let alone get a hundred on debut,” North said. “I’m sure that will sink in over the next couple of days.”As North ticked through the 90s he was given strong support by his partner Mitchell Johnson. The pair put on 117 for the eighth wicket, which was a record for Australia against South Africa, and Johnson went agonisingly close to becoming the fifth Australian to score a Test hundred from No. 9 or below. In the end he was stranded on 96 when Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus edged to the slips off consecutive Morne Morkel deliveries. It’s not quite as bad as being left on 99 not out and Johnson said he was not too worried about the missed opportunity.”Hilfy keeps apologising,” Johnson said. “I’m not disappointed at all.I really enjoyed myself out there. I got the message that came outjust before tea to start going after a few so that’s what I did. Ijust backed myself and got a few over the fence.”Johnson struck five sixes, including three in one Paul Harris over, allof which were slog-swept over long-on or midwicket. Having already hittwo fours in the same over, he set a new Australian record for themost runs in a Test over. His 26 eclipsed the memorable 24 that AdamGilchrist whacked off Monty Panesar in Perth in 2006-07 and Johnson was unaware of the record.”I didn’t know the stats,” he said. “But it’s funny because I wasactually thinking about Gilly while I was out there. Just seeing howhe used to play – that Test in Perth against the English. I want to bemy own person and everything like that but like I say, I reallyenjoyed today.”Johnson wasn’t the only one.
