Telegraph reporter Luke Edwards has revealed that the club will be looking to cash in on a number of players in the upcoming window.

Ahead of the Magpies’ 5-0 loss to Manchester City in the Premier League, Edwards Tweeted: “Think Howe will be looking very closely at players today. Man City is another barometer test Several came up short against Liverpool. They are all playing for futures in some respect, either to stay at club or to keep first team place. There’s going to be a summer clear out.”

After the match, he added: “Most of the starting XI will survive in terms of still being at the club next season but three or four of them will become back up not first choice. The main clear out is players who can’t get a game or haven’t even made squad. The money – or lack of it – they bring in is crucial.”

Supporters will be excited

The Toon faithful will surely be excited by these claims from Edwards as they suggest that the club are set for a busy summer of ins and outs.

They will be buzzing to learn that PIF and Howe are willing to axe the players who are not good enough for the team, whether that comes in the form of them being dropped from the XI or from them being sold or loaned out to another side.

Against Manchester City, Jamaal Lascelles, Emil Krafth, Martin Dubravka and Sean Longstaff all recorded SofaScore ratings of 6.3 or lower and were all at the club prior to the takeover from PIF. If they cannot prove that they are capable of putting in strong performances against the top teams in the division then they may be among the players axed in the upcoming window.

Fans will want to see underperforming individuals punished for their poor displays by being dropped or sold and that is why they will be buzzing and excited by Edwards’ claim. Not only will it mean that they will see duds move away from St. James’ Park but it will also mean that they have the prospect of new arrivals bringing fresh promise to the squad.

Manchester City have never been shy when it comes to getting involved with various transfer deals over the past few years.

Now that the next summer transfer window is around the corner, this will give the Manchester club yet another opportunity to make whatever changes to their squad that they see fit.

However, it seems as though a clue has emerged around one deal that could take place behind the scenes at the Etihad Stadium. Although, it’s not regarding a player.

What’s the talk? 

Speaking to Football Insider, Gabby Agbonlahor had this to say about the possibility of Guardiola putting pen to paper on a new deal with the Citizens.

“I’m sure Pep will sign a new deal as well and Liverpool and Man City will be winning the league for a long time. Pep will think he wants to sign a new deal but he knows there is no rush. There is nobody good enough to take his job, he’s doing so well.

“He’s got two years left on his contract so there is no rush and he can sign a new one next season. I’m sure Pep will be fine. There’s talk of [Erling] Haaland [signing] so I’m sure Pep will want to stay for a long time and get the best out of Haaland.”

Great news for City fans

Since his appointment back in the summer of 2016, Guardiola has taken charge of 347 games in total across all competitions, making him the longest-serving manager in the club’s history.

In those games, City have won 257, drawn 38 and lost just 52, winning a whopping ten trophies along the way. As a result of that, the Spaniard is the most successful manager in the history of the club, making him a legend at the Etihad Stadium.

Thus, taking into account how successful and domestically dominant the Manchester club have been under the 51-year-old’s reign, it’s undeniable that City fans will be over the moon to hear Agbonlahor’s claim that Guardiola would be willing to sign a new deal at the Etihad Stadium.

If the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager does pledge his future to his current club for some more years of service, it will surely lead to even more titles for the Citizens, an eventuality that will no doubt leave supporters buzzing.

Rangers will need to turn around a one-goal deficit when they play the second leg of their Europa League semi-final tie at Ibrox next week.

The Gers suffered a 1-0 defeat in Germany on Thursday night as they were hit with a late hammer blow after defending superbly for most of the game.

Gio van Bronckhorst’s gameplan appeared to be working brilliantly for them as they held firm at the back until Angelino scored a screamer from distance on the volley to win the match for RB Leipzig in the 85th minute.

Although the night ended in defeat for the Light Blues, there were a number of players who were able to leave the pitch with their heads held high. One player in particular who was outstanding on the night was Croatian defender Borna Barisic.

The left-back was superb as he caught the eye at both ends of the pitch. Defensively, he was solid for Van Bronckhorst’s men – as per SofaScore, the £18k-per-week gem won 100% of his duels throughout the 90 minutes whilst also making four clearances, one tackle and one interception.

On the ball, he was reliable and a threat for the Glasgow giants. As per SofaScore, he only gave away possession eight times from 45 touches, which shows that he was not a liability with the ball at his feet. He also created two chances and was successful with one of his two crosses as he made an impact going forward.

Rangers only had seven shots in total and two of those came from his passes, which shows how influential he was in an attacking sense. He offered a much-needed outlet in possession to get the team up the pitch, relieving pressure on the backline and giving the attackers a chance to get at the Leipzig defence.

Former Gers winger Neil McCann claimed earlier this month that Barisic is “like a train” in attack, and that is how the Croatian looked when he was bombing on the overlap to cause problems for the Bundesliga team, although he did not get too many opportunities to do so because of the nature of the game.

Overall, it was an outstanding performance from the 29-year-old and he did not deserve to be on the losing side on the night. He was excellent and Van Bronckhorst will surely be delighted with how Barisic performed at left-back, nailing down his position ahead of the Old Firm clash on Sunday.

Plenty of Celtic players deserve praise following a famous win in Rotterdam, but Hatate was the star of the show.

However, his position in the starting lineup has come under scrutiny, given the Celts’ do have other good central midfield options, namely Nygren, Arne Engels, Luke McCowan and Paulo Bernardo.

However, Hatate’s mercurial talent and exquisite ability makes him a dream for any manager and, based on how his Columbus Crew team like to play, Nancy will surely make the Japanese international a central figure in his team, once he does arrive.

Meanwhile, which usually less heralded figure will also surely have impressed the incoming manager with his display at De Kuip?

Celtic's "world class" talent stars vs Feyenoord

There were many heroes bedecked in green and white hoops during Thursday’s victory over Feyenoord.

Teenaged full-back Colby Donovan was immense, Luke McCowan was excellent out of position, despite his inexplicable early miss, while Daizen Maeda worked his socks off as always.

Meantime, one of the surprise starters when the team sheets dropped was Yang, chosen over Sebastian Tounekti, Nygren and Michel-Ange Balikwisha by O’Neill, but the Korea Republic international certainly repaid the manager’s

Yang lashed home Celtic’s equaliser on the half-hour mark, connecting with Hatate’s looping cross, the ball squirming in between Wellenreuther and the post.

This was only Yang’s second goal of the season, also on target against Partick Thistle in the League Cup in September beforehand, but this one was rather more important.

Since arriving from Gangwon FC in July 2023 under Brendan Rodgers, Yang has flattered to deceive, showing glimpses of quality but only doing so on a very irregular basis.

Upon making the move, Gangwon’s then-club president Kim Byung-ji stated that he had “world class” potential, backing him to become as good as the national team’s all-time leading scorer Son Heung-min.

Tottenham Hotspur have come on leaps and bounds over the last couple of years, as seen by some of the achievements on the field under various managers.

Ange Postecoglou may have been handed his marching orders over the summer window, but he managed to achieve something which various managers have failed to do in North London.

The Aussie claimed the Europa League title with a victory over fellow Premier League side Manchester United in Bilbao, subsequently ending the 17-year trophy drought.

However, it wasn’t enough to keep his job, with the 60-year-old replaced by Thomas Frank, with the Dane tasked with the responsibility of taking the Lilywhites to the next level.

Their ability to win the Europa League has allowed the club to feature in the Champions League, whilst also recruiting some top-level talent in the process.

How Spurs struck gold in Daniel Levy's final window

During the recent summer window, Frank made a beeline to improve his forward line, subsequently making a move to land Mohammed Kudus from rivals West Ham United.

The Ghanaian cost a reported £55m during the off-season, but he’s already shown glimpses of being a shrewd addition for the Lilywhites in 2025/26 and beyond.

He’s registered five assists in his first ten outings in North London, as per Transfermarkt, with the forward also getting off the mark during the recent 2-1 win over Leeds United, lashing home from just outside the box.

Kudus wasn’t the only big-money addition during the off-season, with the hierarchy also forking out £52m for the signature of attacking midfielder Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig.

Whilst he’s primarily a deep-lying option, he managed to net his first goal for the club in the Carabao Cup semi-final over Liverpool – but it was unable to catapult the side to the final.

The 2025/26 campaign has seen the youngster go from strength to strength, already featuring in ten outings under Frank and leading to Squawka describing him as “incredible”.

Bergvall has already added to his goalscoring tally, netting his first English top-flight effort in the recent 3-0 triumph over West Ham at the London Stadium.

His underlying stats this season are just as impressive, making 2.2 tackles per 90 and winning 5.2 duels per 90 – subsequently showcasing his excellent ability to regain possession for the side, before transferring the ball into attacking areas for the likes of Kudus and Simons.

The Swede has also achieved an 84% pass completion rate, whilst also completing 70% of the dribbles he’s attempted – arguably being the perfect box-to-box option at the heart of the team.

At just 19, it’s scary to think about how impressive Bergvall can become in the years ahead, especially if he continues on the trajectory he’s put himself on in recent months.

There’s no disputing that Kudus and Simons will be excellent additions in the near future, but the move for Bergvall was a bargain and one that could go down as one of the best in their history if he reaches his full potential.

Celtic are on track to bolster their options at the top end of the pitch this week with a deal for FC Nordsjaelland winger Benjamin Nygren moving closer.

Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph claims that the Hoops are close to agreeing a fee with the Danish side for the Sweden international, in a move that is expected to cost around £2m.

The journalist states that there is a desire from all parties to get a deal over the line and that talks are progressing well, as Brendan Rodgers looks to add another forward to his attacking arsenal.

Orjasaeter has created seven ‘big chances’ and delivered two assists in seven Eliteserien outings in the 2025 campaign to date, after he caught the eye in last year’s season.

As you can see in the table above, the 21-year-old starlet ranked very highly in the Norwegian top-flight as both a scorer and a creator of goals for his side, and was let down by wasteful finishing from his teammates.

Orjasaeter, who was dubbed a “highly valued player” by Sarpsborg sporting director Hampus Andersson, is a winger who provides a decent goal threat, but also brings the ability to consistently unlock opposition defences with his creativity.

This is why he is as exciting as Nygren, despite the disparity between their respective goal outputs, because they could both offer a lot of quality at the top end of the pitch for the Hoops, albeit in different ways.

According to transfer reporter Graeme Bailey, Everton are now alert in the race to sign Tammy Abraham from AS Roma this summer. The former Chelsea striker spent the season on loan at AC Milan, but struggled to make his mark. Now, he could be heading back to English football for the first time since leaving Stamford Bridge in 2021.

Liverpool considering Goncalo Ramos swoop

According to Sam McGuire for Anfield Watch, FSG and Liverpool are now considering a move to sign Goncalo Ramos from PSG this summer. The Portugal international has often been used from the bench by Luis Enrique in France and may now seek a starting place elsewhere.

Given that he’s likely to be valued at around €65m (£55m) as PSG aim to recoup what they initially paid, Ramos would also be a cheaper option than Ekitike.

Whilst Ramos has underperformed on expected goals, he has been better in that regard than Ekitike, who has underperformed by over six goals. It’s also worth noting that, despite playing the equivalent of almost 12 games in Ligue 1, the PSG forward scored 10 goals throughout the campaign.
