What To Do With Joey Barton?

Depending who you listen to Joey Barton is a footballer, ex-con, ranting anti-celebrity, “football’s philosopher king, loving dad and violent thug all rolled into one.” (joeybarton.com)

Barton has never been one to pull his punches – in every sense of the phrase – but his latest fracas at the Eithad Stadium on May 13 has perhaps threatened his career more so than ever before. The season begins on Saturday for everyone except the troubled midfielder whose 12-match ban may mean he never graces the Premier League again.

Barton is a lot like Marmite, he’s only used when all other options in your cupboard or rather squad are unavailable. Long gone are the days when he used to carve teams open for Manchester City, relishing in his role as both playmaker and midfield general. His transfers to Newcastle and Queens Park Rangers have been smeared with trials and tribulations and neither the tough love of Sam Allardyce or Neil Warnock have been able to improve his temperament.

During the summer it was announced that Barton would participate in pre-season training with Football League newcomers Fleetwood Town, a move that the player himself insisted would help “rediscover his love for game”. Whether this was indeed the case is entirely up for debate, I for one think it was further punishment for his Rambo approach to the last day of the season. Perhaps Mark Hughes was keen to give Barton a glimpse into his future should he continue to court with controversy.

Nevertheless the process was considered a success even though a proposed loan move never materialised. The League Two club praised his professionalism whilst Barton said he relished the “pure, old school, mortgage/livelihoods on the line, balls-out football.” There was even rumour of sessions with sports psychotherapist Steve Pope although I can’t see Barton lying on a coach unless he’s just tried to tackle it.

In the following days a loan move to Ian Holloway’s Blackpool spontaneously appeared in the tabloids but both parties labelled the story a complete fabrication. The Football League has since stepped in to announce that it would block any move to one of its clubs by refusing to register him whilst his ban remains. Officials are said to be unhappy with the attempts to reduce the impact of his FA punishment and believe it would bring the loan system into disrepute.

Many fans and personnel within the game have commended the Football League’s stance but I am confused as to why the ban wasn’t allocated a time period, similar to those given to Cantona and Ferdinand. In this instance there would have been no room for manoeuvre unless Barton was shipped to an area of the world that didn’t adhere to the Gregorian calendar. A loan stint abroad could now prove the only viable option but Barton is unlikely to want to distance himself from his young family.

With Barton due to celebrate his 30th birthday in September he is arguably entering into the prime period of his career. Surely his time in West London is the last chance to make a success of his career, especially having continued to alienate 99% of the footballing world with his impetuous, albeit refreshing outlook on the beautiful game. The introduction of tiki-taka and possession based tactics means that perhaps the Roy Keane’s and Patrick Vieira’s of this world no longer have the same inspiring impact. Barton will no doubt see himself in the same mould as the aforementioned midfield duo – he’s good enough to play for England after all – but I doubt his club share the same ‘us against the world’ mentality that he so easily adheres himself to.

QPR are in a fortunate position in that they can afford to support the financial burden regarding wages and his ongoing rehabilitation. However the flip side to this is that they can also afford to cancel his contract should the negative aspects of retaining Barton outweigh the positives. Therefore he must begin to prove himself useful off the pitch by working within the academy and ensuring his name is kept out of the headlines. I still don’t think he quite understands the level trust he has to regain, his actions after all could easily have cost QPR their place in the Premier League.

Ultimately Barton’s future will be decided by his manager Mark Hughes, a man who unsurprisingly has his own section on Barton’s official website that is littered with praise. Unless the Welshman oversees a vast clearout in the fortnight before the transfer window closes, the club will boast one of the most bulging and competitive squads in the league. If the new additions of Ji-Sung Park and Junior Hoilett ensure a promising start to the campaign then Barton will struggle to remain in contention for a first-team place come November.

There will always be managers, clubs and even chairman who are willing to gamble on a player like Joey Barton, which is perhaps why he’s always been picked up whilst drinking in the last-chance saloon. The mavericks and risk takers of this world will be convinced that they can liberate the talented footballer that’s locked deep inside. Whether we ever get to see that side of him again, remains to be seen.

Neville writes off England’s chances

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has dismissed England’s chances of winning Euro 2012, stating that the core of the team is not as strong as other nations.

The 2-2 draw with Montenegro in Podgorica on Friday night assured that Fabio Capello’s men will take their place in Poland and Ukraine next year.

Despite an unbeaten qualifying campaign, the 85-times capped full-back is not convinced by The Three Lions’ chances.

“It’s as though we think one world class player might be able to propel us to a major trophy,” he stated in the Mail on Sunday.

“And now we are talking about Rooney possibly missing two games at Euro 2012 when what we should be talking about is the spine of a team that has no mobility and can’t keep the ball.

“When I look at it coldly, a team that has John Terry, Gary Cahill, Scott Parker, Gareth Barry, Darren Bent and Rooney in its central positions is nowhere near good enough to take on the major nations such as Spain.

“I’m not having a go at individuals; there are some very good players among those names. Collectively, Rooney aside, there is hardly any pace, very little invention and hardly any rotation of positions.

“The real issue is that the spine of the team is not good enough, as it stands, to take on Spain, Italy, France or Germany at Euro 2012,” he stated.

Neville picked the world champions out as a particular team of strength, that England may not be able to compete against, but will come head-to-head with on November 12th in an international friendly.

“Compare England with the spine of Spain: Carles Puyol, Gerard Pique, Xabi Alonso, Xavi, David Villa and Fernando Llorente. That’s the issue Fabio Capello now has to resolve and why the Wembley friendly is so much more than a practice.

“Never has a friendly been more important.

“It’s like a Cup final. Somehow, Capello has to do something that no England manager has done in 15 years, and that is make the England players believe that this next match could be the most important of their life,” he concluded.

Hammers give Burnley some hope

West Ham are likely to field a weakened team in the FA Cup fifth round on Monday. And that could give Championship side Burnley the chance of an upset at Upton Park. With the Hammers locked in a relegation battle, manager Avram Grant is unlikely to risk influential players in the last 16 tie.Captain Scott Parker, as well as the likes of Matthew Upson, Wayne Bridge and Demba Ba, could be benched.Robbie Keane is out injured, but Germany international Thomas Hitzlsperger is in line to make his debut after a long spell on the sidelines.Grant steered Portsmouth to the FA Cup final last year, but said on Friday that English Premier League survival for West Ham must come first.”The FA Cup is always exciting,” he said. “After a few games you can be in the quarter-finals and semi-finals.””I like the FA Cup, but of course our first priority is the league like every other team in the league.””It’s a good competition. I like this competition. It gives you a break from the league which is also good.””It’s always good to play at home but I know this won’t be an easy game. This team [Burnley], for them the FA Cup is everything.””This is an opportunity for them to get everyone to love them and I know from the past that teams can come from the Championship and give it their all. We will prepare ourselves for a very difficult game.”With eight days between the 3-3 draw at West Bromwich Albion and the clash with Burnley, Grant used the break for a team-bonding exercise.”It was good for the team spirit and was very successful,” said Grant, whose side have won nine consecutive cup games against lower league opposition.”We did go-karting and many other things. It was nice. It doesn’t matter who won, but it was nice to watch them enjoy themselves in the middle of everything.”Burnley, relegated from the EPL last season, are chasing promotion and face a fixture pile-up, but boss Eddie How is taking the game seriously.”We’d love to continue the run and go as far as we can,” he said.”We’ll look to enjoy it. I don’t think we’ve got an awful lot to lose.”We want to go there and put on a performance against a Premier League club who, despite their league position, are a good Premier League club.”I think it’s a nice distraction and a different kind of pressure with the cup games, it’s probably a nice release for us.””We’ll look to enjoy it. I don’t think we’ve got an awful lot to lose.”

Gerrard defends fiery colleague Rooney

Midfielder Steven Gerrard is confident that England team-mate Wayne Rooney will keep his cool at the World Cup finals in South Africa.

Rooney was cautioned during his side's final warm-up game against the Platinum Stars and warned about his swearing towards match officials, but Gerrard is confident that there will be no problems when the tournament itself gets underway.

He told reporters:"People talk about the yellow card he got the other day, but that is Wayne Rooney. He is always on the edge. He has got that fire in his belly.

"I know Wayne. I know about his upbringing and his background. We have a good understanding on the pitch because we are quite close off it.

"If Wayne channels his frustrations in the right way he can be one of the players of this tournament."

Meanwhile, USA head coach Bob Bradley has dismissed suggestions that his team could try and provoke Rooney in Saturday's clash in Rustenburg.

He added:"I'm asked this a lot and no we won't try and wind him up. We don't get into that sort of thing.

Everton’s priority this summer isn’t just about appointing the right manager

Everton ended what has been a hugely disappointing Premier League season in eighth position despite a 3-1 defeat against West Ham United at the London Stadium, and it was a match that highlighted one of their main issues this term.

With Seamus Coleman and Ramiro Funes Mori out with long-term injuries and Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams past their best, it was clear that the Toffees needed to strengthen their backline last summer, but the only additions to the squad were Michael Keane and Cuco Martina, with the main focus appearing to be on strengthening the attack.

The lack of work on the defence – only Keane out of the two new signings would have been viewed as being a regular – certainly came back to bite the Merseyside outfit in the early weeks of the campaign as they struggled down the wrong end of the table.

Martina would have been brought in as a back-up player, but he ended up being a regular in the XI at right-back and then left-back when Leighton Baines picked up an injury.

While he sometimes did a solid enough job, the fact that Everton were starting a player than often failed to make the squad for Southampton in the 2016/17 campaign summed up the predicament they were in.

At the heart of the defence things we even worse, with Keane struggling to replicate the form he had shown for Burnley previously, and Williams and Jagielka continuing to show that the best years of their career are behind them.

Youngsters like Mason Holgate and Jonjoe Kenny also came in and did well, but they shouldn’t be regulars in an XI for a club that is looking to seriously challenge the top six clubs in the Premier League – that is what owner Farhad Moshiri wants, as shown by his investment in the playing squad last summer.

Things certainly improved from a defensive point of view for a time when Sam Allardyce took the reins at the end of November – they only conceded twice in his first seven matches in charge in all competitions – but heavy defeats on the road against Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal soon followed in 2018.

[ad_pod ]

Williams had largely been a regular in the back four with Keane under Allardyce, but a sending off in March in the 2-1 defeat to Burnley proved to be a turning point for player and manager, with the 63-year-old omitting him from the matchday squad for the rest of the season.

Jagielka replaced him and Baines and Coleman soon retook their place in the defence when they returned from injury, and while they looked ok defensively, it still wasn’t great.

In the final game of the season against West Ham on Sunday, their defensive frailties were shown as Allardyce decided to go with a 5-3-2 formation, with Keane, Jagielka and Funes Mori in a three-man defence and Coleman and Baines as wing-backs.

Funes Mori was hauled off at half-time on his first Premier League start of the season, while the likes of Keane, Jagielka and Baines all failed to impress.

If Everton are to line up with four at the back next term – with or without Allardyce with many fans hoping on Twitter it is the latter – many would probably say that Coleman is the only one that would be a guaranteed a spot in the starting XI.

While Keane may or may not be a regular pick – he probably deserves the benefit of the doubt given it has been a tough campaign for everyone – that still leaves the Merseyside outfit with plenty of work to do in the window.

There is no way that Jagielka, Baines, Williams or Funes Mori should be starting the campaign in the back four, and that means the club needs at least one – and preferably two – centre-backs, while they also potentially need two new left-backs depending on what is going to happen with the likes of Luke Garbutt and Brendan Galloway.

Building a new-look defence could be what Everton need to move on to try and compete for a top-six finish in the future, and it must be the priority for Moshiri and Co when the transfer window opens this week.

Tottenham Hotspur provide injury update on key trio, fans react

Tottenham Hotspur have had a number of injuries to contend with over the course of the season so far.

Victor Wanyama has been a long-term absentee with a knee injury, while Toby Alderweireld is not expected to return to action until February due to a hamstring problem.

With the fixtures coming thick and fast now that the Premier League has entered the festive period, having  fit squad is essential in order to cope with the demand.

Today, Tottenham posted their weekly injury update on Twitter ahead of Saturday’s trip to face Burnley at Turf Moor.

As expected, Alderweireld remains on the sidelines, while Wanyama, who has been taking part in elements of training, has been ruled out of the game.

The good news is that Davinson Sanchez is back in the fray after serving a suspension.

Tottenham fans have been giving their thoughts on social media.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side will look to bounce back against sixth-placed Burnley following last weekend’s 4-1 defeat to league leaders Manchester City.

West Bromwich Albion 2-3 Wigan Athletic: Match Review

Wigan came from behind twice to snatch a late win over West Brom at the Hawthorns to boost their Premier League survival hopes.

Steve Clarke post-match…”We have conceded three goals and we have to look at that. Two of the goals came from crosses and normally our defending from crosses is very good. We played an attacking line-up, I chose to go with that so I have to be the one that carries the can for this.”

Roberto Martinez post-match…”We showed our character and never accepted defeat. To come back twice from behind at a place as difficult as this is huge. To score three goals in open play here is very pleasing and I don’t think anyone else has done that this season.”

Good day for…Callum McManaman: Amidst all the controversy that surrounds McManaman he is developing into a fine footballer. Another match winning display saw him steal a priceless victory for Wigan and then clear off the line at the death to preserve the scoreline and boost his sides chances of survival.

Bad day for…Paul Scharner: Just an awful day all round for the Wigan defender. Sacrificed possession in the lead-up to West Brom’s open goal and gave away the free kick that led to their second.

Why West Ham would be an ideal move

One of the summers longest transfer saga’s continues to drag on, with Andy Carroll’s future remaining unresolved. Liverpool’s record signing does not seem to fit into the’tika-taka philosophy’ Brendan Rodgers is trying to impose at Anfield, and it is regarded as the worst kept secret in football that Liverpool would be willing to offload their number 9 if the right offer were to come their way.

Newcastle and West Ham have both been linked with the 23-year-old, and whilst a return to Newcastle is believed to be Carroll’s only wanted alternative, West Ham could be a move that would suit both parties very well.

There are no surprises regarding the way Sam Allardyce likes his teams to play. They are tough, physical, and a threat from set pieces. The sort of  situations Andy Carroll thrives on.

Their opening day performance against Aston Villa was a classic example of this, as Allardyce’s team pinged long balls towards the physical presence of Carlton Cole up front all afternoon, causing Villa plenty of problems. West Ham came away with a 1-0 victory, but perhaps on another day could of been awarded a couple of penalties as Cole went down under ariel challenges in the box.

The performance looked tailor-made for Andy Carroll, who showed during his time at Newcastle and towards the back end of last season that he can be almost unplayable given the correct service. You feel he could thrive at Upton Park where he would be playing regular first team football, and have the team built towards playing to his strengths.

Carroll would have the bonus of being reunited with his former teammate and close friend Kevin Nolan. The pair formed an excellent partnership at Newcastle during the first half of the 2010/2011 season, with Carroll bagging 11 goals. The 3-1 victory over Liverpool in December 2010 saw Carroll assist Nolan for the opening goal before getting on the scoresheet himself, a performance that must of been taken into account as Liverpool made their £35million bid.

Perhaps most crucial of all would be the Sam Allardyce factor. Allardyce has a history of reviving players who’s careers have hit a stumbling block, the likes of Kevin Davis, Jay-Jay Okocha and Ivan Campo spring to mind. His man management skills are second to none, so much so he even managed to get a couple of decent seasons out of El Hadji-Diouf during his time at Bolton.

With West Ham the only team to make a concrete offer, you wonder how the remaining ten days of the transfer window will pan out. Carroll showed tremendous promise towards the end of last season and during the Euro’s, but yet found himself on the bench for the opening day of the season. Rodgers didn’t even turn to Carroll with Liverpool trailing 2-0 and in desperate need of a goal, instead opting for Joe Cole.

The vast majority of Liverpool fans want to see Carroll given another season to prove himself, but accept it is unlikely to be the case with Rodgers in charge.

If West Ham were to come back with another bid before the transfer window slams shut and Liverpool should accept, Carroll should seriously consider a switch to East London. It may prove to be a match made in heaven.

Milner yet to sign new contract, Liverpool fans react

James Milner has always been regarded as a reliable and hard-working footballer, and this season in particular, he has thrived for Liverpool.

Last season, the midfielder, who signed for the Reds from Manchester City in 2015, was forced out of position.

Manager Jurgen Klopp opted to play the 32-year-old as a left-back ahead of Alberto Moreno.

Without any complaints, Milner took on the role and did a solid job before reverting back to midfield for the 2017-18 campaign.

This season, the former England international has started 25 appearances in all competitions, including 16 starts in the Premier League.

While Milner may not have been a regular starter, he has been crucial in the club reaching the Champions League final, which will take place in Kiev against Real Madrid on May 26.

In total, the midfielder, who has become a hit on social media since joining Twitter, has created 11 assists and scored one goal.

The 32-year-old will enter the final year of his contract this summer, and Liverpool fans have been discussing Milner’s future on Reddit.

Tottenham… Cash in before it’s too late

Life must be so frustrating as a Tottenham Hotspur fan, just a couple of seasons ago with Gareth Bale leading the attack the Lilywhites looked a club that were going places and were capable of competing with Europe’s elite teams.

Then Real Madrid came calling and the Welsh superstar moved to the Bernabeu for a world-record £86m in 2013. Replacing the player would prove no easy task, and the London club spent over £100m bringing in the likes of Christian Eriksen, Nacer Chadli, Erik Lamela, Paulinho and Roberto Soldado to fill the void left by Bale.

Erik Lamela was the most anticipated signing of that now infamous summer, with the player possessing a similar style to Welshman. The Argentinian had been vital for Roma scoring 21 goals in 67 games before Andre Villas-Boas came calling.

Lamela joined Spurs in a club record deal worth around £30m with big things expected, however, his impressive performances in Italy just haven’t transferred over to the Premier League and Lamela has struggled to make the desired impact at White Hart Lane – he made only nine league appearances in his first season with the club, and has struggled with numerous injuries throughout his two seasons while failing to impress any of his three bosses so far when fit.

Last season the player featured a lot more regularly, but still has failed to show the promise that attracted Spurs. Lamela made 41 appearances in all competitions scoring only five goals, which, for an attacking midfielder who always wants the ball, is not good enough.

The only real impressive moment of his Tottenham career was THAT rabona goal in the Europa League… and even that was against opposition of debatable quality. There was more than a hint of good fortune about that goal, too, and if the player was to try the same move again he would probably score one out of every 25 attempts.

Astonishingly there are teams actually queuing up to end the player’s London misery, with a return to Italy with either Juventus or one of the Milan clubs being mooted.

Clearly they see something in the player that the majority of us are missing.

Juventus are the most surprising team to show interest. A world class midfield with the likes of Paul Pogba, Arturo Vidal and Claudio Marchisio should not have a player like Lamela anywhere near it.

There has even been talk of a potential swap deal with Inter Milan playmaker Xherdan Shaqiri and should this move develop Spurs need to do all they can to secure the Swiss International. Shaqiri is twice the player Lamela is and would be the closest the club have come to actually replacing Gareth Bale.

The club have built up a squad full of distinctly average players and manager Mauricio Pochettino should jump at the chance to get rid of one of his more expensive flops.
