Man Utd make £12.5m offer for £209k-p/w ace as Amorim eyes first signing

Manchester United have made a £12.5 million offer for a defender who’s been called a “cheat code”, as Ruben Amorim eyes his first signing at Old Trafford, according to a recent report.

The Red Devils were very busy during the summer, adding five players to their squad in INEOS’ first summer transfer window. However, that was under Erik ten Hag’s reign, and the Portuguese will now have his eye on areas of the team he would like the board to strengthen.

Amorim now makes bringing £38m Sporting star to Man Utd his top priority

Amorim has yet to arrive at United but already has his eye on one player he would like to bring to his new side.

Man Utd transfer news

The left-back area has been a concern at Old Trafford for a while now, given the recent absences of Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia. United decided against buying a recognised left-back in the summer, instead opting to buy Noussair Mazraoui, who has been excellent since his arrival, but that appears to be an area that needs addressing, especially under Amorim.

The new boss will be looking to play a three-at-the-back system at Old Trafford, and therefore, he will need a left-back capable of playing the wing-back role. So, the Red Devils have identified Patrick Dorgu as a potential option, as he can play as a left-winger and full-back, fitting perfectly into the style of player Amorim likes to have.

Goncalo Inacio in action for Sporting Lisbon

Meanwhile, Amorim and United have made Sporting CP defender Goncalo Inacio a top target for next summer. They added Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt to their ranks in the summer, but Amorim appears keen to bring Inacio, who has been so important for him in Portugal, to Old Trafford with him next summer.

But Inacio is not the only centre-back that United are looking to sign, as they have reportedly made an offer for another European defender.

Man Utd make £12.5m offer for Andreas Christensen

According to reports in Spain relayed by Football365, Manchester United have made a €15m (£12.5m) offer for Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen. The January transfer window is still several weeks away from opening, but United have made their move for the defender who could become Amorim’s first signing at the club.

Andreas Christensen

Christensen has been at Barça since July 2022, when he joined the club on a free transfer after leaving Chelsea. The Danish international, who has been described as a “cheat code” by journalist Domagoj Kostanjsak, played over 160 times for Chelsea and has been an important player for the Spanish giants since his move.

Amorim is keen to strengthen his United defence in the January transfer window, and according to this report, his first target is going to be Christensen, which aligns with reports on Inacio detailing he cannot move until next summer.

The Red Devils have then made an early offer for the centre-back, who can also play as a right-back if needed. It is an offer that sporting director Deco is willing to consider too, as the player is not in Hansi Flick’s long-term plans.

Christensen, who earns 250,000 euros a week at Barça, which is roughly £209,000, has an uncertain future at the Spanish club as he’s only played once in La Liga so far this season. This offer from United presents Barça with an opportunity to bring some reinforcements to other areas of the team.

Carlos Brathwaite to return to Birmingham Bears as T20 Blast captain

West Indies allrounder available for entire 2022 campaign, having helped Bears to quarter-finals last season

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Nov-2021Carlos Brathwaite will return to Birmingham Bears as the team’s overseas T20 player and captain for next year’s Vitality Blast.Brathwaite, the West Indies allrounder who has previously captained his country in T20Is and the Patriots in the CPL, will be available for the entire 2022 campaign, having helped the Bears reach the quarter-finals for the first time in four years last season, his first with the club.He was the leading wicket taker for the Bears in the 2021 Vitality Blast, taking 18 scalps at an average of 17.61. Brathwaite also scored 183 runs, including 52 in an unbroken sixth-wicket partnership of 104 with Sam Hain to secure a home win over local rivals Worcestershire Rapids. He also smashed 44 off 18 balls against Notts Outlaws at Trent Bridge.”Edgbaston is a very special place to play at and it was great to get a taste of the atmosphere last year,” Brathwaite said. “Hopefully we can welcome thousands more fans to get the Eric Hollies Stand rocking next year and make Edgbaston the real fortress for the Bears which it’s renowned for.”Paul Farbrace, Warwickshire’s director of cricket, said that awarding the captaincy to the vastly experienced Brathwaite – who has also won the BBL with Sydney Sixers, played for Multan Sultans in the PSL and, most recently, CPL side Jamaica Tallawahs – “removes some pressure from Will Rhodes as club captain”.”Will can play with a lot more freedom as a result,” Farbrace said. “Carlos gets exactly what we are trying to achieve in T20 cricket. We want to play brave and entertaining cricket, that gets the crowd excited, and there’s never a dull moment with Carlos with either bat or ball in his hand. He’s a match winner.”Since joining earlier this year, Carlos has been a great addition to the dressing room and he is popular with all of the squad… his experience of playing, and winning, some of the biggest short-form tournaments in the world has been invaluable in supporting the development of our young players.”Meanwhile, Will Beer has signed a T20-only contract with Sussex for next year.Beer, the 33-year-old legspinner, is the Sharks’ leading wicket-taker in the format, with 106 wickets in 131 appearances over the past 14 seasons. He had hoped to play all three formats for the club in 2022, but said the single-format deal would allow him to pursue other opportunities, including at franchises elsewhere throughout the year.Beer played just one Championship match and six Royal London One-Day Cup games for Sussex in 2021. He played 13 Blast games last season, taking nine wickets with an economy rate of 7.77.”I had hoped to carry on playing in all formats, but I am still grateful to have the opportunity to continue my cricketing career at Sussex with this T20 contract,” Beer said in a statement released by the club on Tuesday.”This deal allows me to focus all my efforts on T20 and be the best player in that format I possibly can to give the team the best chance of winning games and ultimately the title. I’ll also have the time and opportunity now to think about other ventures, both for life after cricket but also in the numerous tournaments around the world that take place all year round.”

Newcastle missed out on £40m "monster" who’s now far outperforming Gordon

Newcastle United have enjoyed a stellar start to the 2024/25 campaign thus far, despite Eddie Howe failing to really strengthen the first-team squad during the summer transfer window.

Seven points from nine in the Premier League while reaching the next round of the EFL Cup is certainly considered a more than decent start, but will the lack of investment in the team during the summer come back to haunt the manager as the season progresses?

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe

Several players have stepped up and performed superbly during the opening few weeks of the season, most notably Anthony Gordon.

Anthony Gordon’s statistics this season

The Englishman enjoyed a wonderful 2023/24 campaign, registering 23 goal contributions – 12 goals and 11 assists – in all competitions for the Magpies as they narrowly missed out on European football.

These performances meant he was called up by Gareth Southgate for a space in the England squad ahead of the 2024 European Championship, although he featured just once during the competition, coming off the bench in the group stage game against Slovenia.

This experience will stand him in good stead, however, as he looks to become a permanent fixture in future England squads.

Gordon has played in all three league matches for the Toon this term, scoring once in the draw against Bournemouth a couple of weeks ago.

The winger has been in electric form in the top flight. Aside from his goal against the Cherries, the 23-year-old has also created one big chance, averaged 2.7 key passes per game and succeeded with 0.7 dribbles per match, showcasing his attacking qualities.

Among his teammates, Gordon also ranks fourth for shots on target per game (0.3), along with ranking second for scoring frequency (a goal every 248 minutes) and first for expected assists (0.79) in the Premier League.

If the Magpies wish to return to the top six, or even the top four, Howe will be hoping one of his prized assets can maintain this current form once the international break is over.

Despite the left-winger shining for the club, could the manager have signed a player who has already outshone Gordon during the early weeks of the season? Chelsea winger Noni Madueke was a prime transfer target during the summer.

Newcastle missed out on Noni Madueke

The club were linked with numerous targets during the transfer window but failed to sign any of them.

With Howe aiming to bring another winger into his squad, particularly on the right flank, Madueke was an option that was being considered. They would have been forced to fork out a fee in the region of £40m in order to lure him north, however, and the move didn’t materialise.

In hindsight, this looks like a major missed opportunity for Howe, as there is no doubt the Magpies could have afforded the fee.

The English gem has started the season off in sublime fashion and has even outperformed Gordon in several metrics, proving why the club should have made a more concrete effort to sign him.

Noni Madueke’s season in numbers for Chelsea

Despite starting just three matches so far for the Stamford Bridge side, Madueke has scored four goals, which included a stunning hat-trick against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League.

These displays should ensure he is thought of as a main option by Enzo Maresca heading into the next few weeks of the season, yet it proves exactly what Newcastle missed out on during the summer.

Across his two league matches, Madueke has averaged 4.5 shots per game, missed two big chances, created a big chance, averaged one key pass per game and succeeded with one dribble per match.

Said to be “one of the best young players in Europe” and a "mentality monster" by technical coach, Saul Isaksson-Hurst, he's certainly living up to that hype in 2023/24.

Madueke-Chelsea-Wolves-Stats

Despite the interest from other clubs in the transfer window, it now looks as though Chelsea did the right thing by keeping the former PSV winger, as his goals could be vital this term, both domestically and in Europe.

How Noni Madueke compares to Anthony Gordon

If Madueke joined Newcastle, he wouldn’t be fighting it out with Gordon for a place in the starting XI as they operate on opposite flanks, but the England youth international is enjoying a better campaign in the top flight than the Toon star.

Not only does Madueke have more goals than Gordon, but he has also averaged more successful dribbles, key passes and shots per game.

Furthermore, according to FBref, the Chelsea sensation also has a better shots on target percentage per 90 than Gordon (66.7% vs 50%) in the top flight, along with averaging more goal-creating actions (1.03 vs 0), achieving a higher percentage of successful take-ons (50% vs 25%) and performing more progressive carries (5.26 vs 3.33) per 90.

These statistics clearly prove the Chelsea gem has enjoyed a better start to the 2024/25 Premier League campaign, demonstrating how effective Madueke is in the final third.

If Howe had managed to bring the Englishman to St James' Park in the summer, he could have formed a devastating wing duo which could have terrorised opposition defenders all over the country.

Gordon is still one of Howe’s key players, but he doesn’t have anyone as effective at performing on the right wing.

Failing to sign Madueke could turn into a mistake by the club, especially if he continues to impress for the Blues as the weeks progress.

Newcastle should take plenty of confidence from this excellent start they have enjoyed, but imagine how better it might have been if they had someone like Madueke performing at his very best for the Magpies.

Newcastle could regret selling £1.8m ace who outscored Gordon in 23/24

He’s gone on to have a successful career away from St James’ Park.

McCarthy upgrade: Southampton pursuing £20k-p/w sensation to end GK woes

Southampton would have been annoyed, come full-time at St James' Park, that they weren't travelling back down to the South Coast with something to show for their promising Premier League opening day display.

In the end, a costly goalkeeping error from Alex McCarthy – who passed straight to Alexander Isak lackadaisically for Joelinton to then convert – allowed the Magpies to pick up a fortuitous 1-0 win, despite the fact Eddie Howe's men had to play all of the second 45 minutes with ten men.

The stand-in Saints shot-stopper had barely any shots to save otherwise, as Southampton dominated proceedings with 19 shots to Newcastle's meagre three.

He could soon be replaced in the line-up, therefore, with a new addition in-between the sticks, who is more naturally suited to playing out from the back with confidence.

Southampton's search for a goalkeeper

As per journalist Darren Witcoop, Southampton are lining up a swoop of Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper Jason Steele, to bolster their options away from McCarthy.

Steele did start Brighton's emphatic 3-0 victory against Everton on the weekend, however, but the Saints will try and win his services regardless, desperate for more numbers in between the sticks with Gavin Bazunu sidelined until 2025 with a serious knock.

Noted as being a "ball-playing" 'keeper by Witcoop, snapping up the 34-year-old would ensure errors like the costly one McCarthy made versus Newcastle are eradicated from the Saints' game moving forward, on top of winning a shot-stopper who has impressed for the Seagulls in terms of keeping the ball out of his net in the elite division before.

How Steele would suit Southampton

On the opening day, Steele impressed those watching on from a Brighton perspective at Goodison Park, far more than those in the away end at Newcastle grimly spectating McCarthy's display.

Coming away from the 3-0 win with a 90% pass accuracy in-tact, the Seagulls 'keeper also had to remain alert when the Toffees ventured forward on occasion, with one save and two punches also registered.

Stats by FBref

Looking at the above table, Steele is a far more competent ball-playing option than McCarthy, hence why Martin is targeting the former Middlesbrough 'keeper as a replacement, with far more passes attempted per 90 minutes as a braver presence in between the sticks.

Moreover, the £20k-per-week shot-stopper – as per Capology – is more willing to come outside of his penalty area to help orchestrate moves, with 2.59 defensive actions registered outside the penalty area over the last year per game, compared to McCarthy's paltry 0.20.

FBref even makes bold comparisons that Steele's game is similar to that of Manuel Neuer's and Ederson's, with both of those world-class 'keepers renowned for their unerring coolness on the ball.

Not having everything his own way at Brighton during his time at the club, however, Steele would become a surprising starting figure for ex-Seagulls boss Roberto De Zerbi last campaign, after having to make do with an unsteady place on the periphery for large spells.

Steele also has far more encouraging recent numbers for Brighton, compared to the current Saints number one, with 79 goals shipped from 54 games.

This is contrasted next to McCarthy's alarming 231 goals leaked from 148 contests, with only 38 clean sheets picked up from those starting games for Martin's men.

Southampton'sAlexMcCarthyin action

Described as being "outrageous" for his ability to play under pressure, and pass with swagger, by ex-Watford 'keeper Ben Foster last season, Steele could soon become a hero for the Saints, if he puts in calm displays that help in their aim to stave off relegation.

Forget about Maeda: Celtic’s 9/10 magician was the real hero vs Hibs

Celtic ensured that they will be in the hat for the next round of the League Cup with a relatively comfortable 3-1 win over Hibernian at Parkhead on Sunday.

The Hoops failed at the same stage last season, with a loss to Kilmarnock, but two goals from Daizen Maeda and one from Nicolas Kuhn sealed the win at the weekend.

Brendan Rodgers went with a very strong starting XI, rather than handing opportunities to other players in the squad, with Kyogo Furuhashi dropping out through injury and being replaced by Maeda through the middle.

The Japan international caught the eye with a brace in a rare outing as the centre-forward for Celtic, with his usual position out wide on the left.

Daizen Maeda's performance against Hibernian

With Idah left on the bench, having only just arrived on a permanent deal from Norwich City, Maeda was given a chance to stake a claim for a place through the middle as a striker.

His first goal came with a fantastic run and cross by Reo Hatate down the right flank. The Japanese forward did well to get across his marker at the front post and saw his prodded effort deflect into the back of the net.

Maeda's second goal came just 14 minutes later, in the 17th minute, with a brilliant run in-behind the defence and a clever, stretched, finish to poke the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper.

However, the winger-turned-striker did have a number of chances to secure a hat-trick but failed to take them, wasting one huge chance when Matt O'Riley slipped him in down the middle in the second half, but he was too slow to get his shot away.

Celtic's real hero against Hibernian

Rodgers' real hero against Hibernian was German forward Nicolas Kuhn, who was a magician on the pitch for the Scottish giants at Parkhead.

Nicolas Kuhn

The definition of a constant threat on the right flank. Always available for the ball, always probing to make something happen, and he has the quality to back it up.

His pass for Maeda's second goal was beautiful with the perfect amount of curl and perfect weight for the Japan international to finish and make it 2-0. It really is no surprise to see that he earned a 9/10 rating from The Celtic Way's Ryan McGinlay.

As you can see in the table above, Kuhn came into the match off the back of a fantastic start to the season in the Scottish Premiership, with three goal contributions in two matches.

He carried that form over into this cup clash with his third goal in as many games, closing down Josef Bursik to, essentially, deflect a pass into the back of the net.

That goal typified the 5 foot 9 maestro's industrious performance on the wing, as he constantly pressed and probed in and out of possession to make things happen for Celtic.

Kuhn was at the heart of pretty much everything that was good about Celtic's play, with his direct dribbling, pressing, and intelligent passing, and that is why he was the real hero for Rodgers.
