Surrey hit with five-run penalty

ScorecardAlex Davies led the recovery for Lancashire at Emirates Old Trafford as he finished the second day of their crucial Specsavers County Championship match against Hampshire unbeaten on 78.Replying to Hampshire’s first-innings 451, Lancashire closed on 140 for 3 as Davies posted his highest score of the Division One season so far, surpassing a previous best of 71. However, Hampshire, boosted by a Rilee Rossouw century, will still be the happier at the halfway stage of a clash between two struggling teams. A couple of early wickets during the third morning will really see them in the driving seat. With club captain Liam Livingstone on England Lions duty and veteran West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul missing for compassionate reasons, Lancashire’s batting order has suffered a huge dent. Hampshire, meanwhile, are without South African pace bowler Dale Steyn as they have decided to rest him prior to their Royal London Cup final against Kent at Lord’s on Saturday. The Lancashire innings got off to a familiar start as they lost an early wicket. England opener Keaton Jennings gloved Gareth Berg behind for 4 to leave his side 7 for 1 before tea.Haseeb Hameed’s off-stump was sent cartwheeling by Fidel Edwards as he departed for 13 early in the evening. Hameed’s poor run of form continues having now been out three times in a row offering no shot, and he averages just 7.00 in his seventh appearance this summer.Rob Jones followed for just a single, as he too had his off stump uprooted by Kyle Abbott as the score slipped to 70 for 3 in the 25th over.Despite the loss of wickets, wicketkeeper-batsman Davies remained positive by playing some crunching shots all around the ground. The 23-year-old reached a mature fifty off 87 balls with 10 fours. Dane Vilas – the stand-in captain for Livingstone – supported Davies and will aim to continue their unbroken 70-run alliance deep into the third morning.Earlier, Rossouw crafted his 19th first-class class century as he finished the Hampshire first innings unbeaten on 120 off 189 balls. They resumed the second day on 302 for 6, with Rossouw and Ollie Rayner unbeaten. But Rayner failed to trouble the scorers as Graham Onions had him trapped in front for a 24-ball duck. That gave Onions his second five-wicket haul of the season after taking 6 for 55 at Trent Bridge against Nottinghamshire in mid-May. However, the hosts couldn’t capitalise on the early wicket as they toiled in heightened Manchester temperatures.A 67-ball 49 from Berg ensured Lancashire’s bowlers felt the burn as the lead grew. Abbott and Edwards hung around with Rossouw, adding 61 for the last two wickets.

Lewis 84 puts Netherlands out of Super Sixes

A 113-run stand between Wesley Barresi and Ryan ten Doeschate kept Netherlands in the hunt in their chase of 310, but a string of run outs pegged them back and left them well short of the DLS par score when rain brought the contest to a premature halt

The Report by Sreshth Shah12-Mar-2018
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsA brutal 84 from Evin Lewis powered West Indies to 309 for 6, and that total and inclement weather combined put Netherlands out of contention for the Super Sixes. There were two breaks for rain during the West Indies innings, which caused the match to be reduced to 48 overs a side. Netherlands were in a reasonable position in their chase of 310, when Wesley Barresi (64) and Ryan ten Doeschate (67*) in the midst of a 113-run stand for the third wicket at a run-rate of 6.78, but a string of run outs put them on the back foot.Evin Lewis blasted 84 to set up West Indies’ tall score•ICC/Getty Images

First, Barresi was run out in the 24th over – courtesy Lewis’ brilliance in the deep – and in the next over captain Peter Borren was caught short while trying to steal a second run off a free-hit. Ten Doeschate, the No. 3 batsman, was at the other end on both occasions. At the start of the 29th over, Netherlands were still in the game , with 150 needed from 20 overs and ten Doeschate at the crease on 61. Four balls into that over, however, with rain imminent, Pieter Seelaar fell to Kesrick Williams. That was to be the last action of the match, as rain sent the players off the field once more, this time for good, with Netherlands 54 behind the DLS par score. Before Seelaar’s dismissal, they had been 34 behind.Earlier, after being sent in, West Indies started with a bang with Chris Gayle and Lewis adding 85 off 51 balls for the first wicket. Gayle was particularly severe on seamer Vivian Kingma, taking him for 38 runs off 22 balls, including five sixes. Lewis, at the other end, got stuck into Timm van der Gugten, smashing him four successive boundaries in the fourth over. The rollicking stand ended when van der Merwe pulled off a stunning catch to remove Gayle for 46 off 31 balls. Van der Merwe then slowed West Indies down with the ball, dismissing Shimron Hetmyer and Shai Hope. However, it was Borren who had taken the big wicket of Lewis in the 28th over. By then, he had hit six fours and four sixes.Marlon Samuels, however, hit form to make an unbeaten 73 off 84 balls. He plundered 99 for the sixth wicket at a run-rate of 8.6 with Rovman Powell, who struck 52 off 38 balls, to haul West Indies past 300.GMT 0631 The report has been amended to reflect the fact that Netherlands began their innings chasing 310 in 48 overs

Aston Villa Submit £17m Bid To Sign "Dangerous" Leon Bailey Rival

Aston Villa are reportedly back on the hunt for signings this window, as manager Unai Emery looks to bolster his side in preparation for the challenges ahead in the 2023/24 campaign.

The Spaniard has already welcomed four new players to his squad, with Galatasaray midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo arriving most recently on loan from the Turkish champions.

If recent reports are to be believed, the Villans could be preparing to secure a deal for another new addition, with reports in Spain suggesting that the Premier League side could be ready to battle for the signature of a dazzling starlet.

Who could Aston Villa sign this summer?

Having already smashed the club transfer record fee to sign Moussa Diaby in a deal worth £51.9m, Villa could be ready to go to war with the Frenchman’s former club again, according to reports.

News in Spain has listed both the Midlands outfit and Bayer Leverkusen as those interested in Barcelona youngster Abde Ezzalzouli, with the report stating that both sides have made offers for the 21-year-old.

Barcelona are not willing to sanction a move for the Moroccan for a fee less than €20m (£17m), with the understanding that his exit would assist the club in relieving their struggles to adhere to Financial Fair Play (FFP) pressures.

The winger is contracted to the Spanish champions until 2026, however as reported in Spain, the forward would ‘prioritise’ remaining at Barca however wants to play more football, which could see him embark on a new path.

What is Abde Ezzalzouli’s playing style?

Deployed on either flank, the 21-year-old gem has the pace and ball-carrying ability typical of the skill set identified in wide forward.

A dynamic right-footed player, the Moroccan is most comfortable on the left wing, where he can use his direct approach to play to cause havoc for the opposition, lauded by U23 scout Antonio Mango as a “majestic” and “extremely unpredictable” player in the final third.

For Villa, the Barcelona youngster, who spent last campaign on loan at Osasuna, could prove to be a useful technician for Emery to weave into his squad, in a player that could provide great depth in the wide areas.

Barcelona forwardAbde Ezzalzouli.

One player that could be both threatened and encouraged by his potential arrival is Leon Bailey, who is a similar player to Ezzalzouli in nature and by the threat they pose on the wing.

Last term, the Morocco U23 international netted four goals and registered two assists for Osasuna in LaLiga, compared to Bailey’s four goals and four assists for Villa in the Premier League.

Based on their averages in their respective 2022/23 campaigns, it’s clear to see just how much of an impact the Barcelona gem could be to Emery’s side in place of and to challenge the Jamaican.

As per FBref, Ezzalzouli averaged 5.57 progressive carries and 3.53 successful take-ons per 90 for his loan side, with his rate of successful take-ons ranking him in the top 3% of those in his position in the Spanish top-flight.

At Villa Park, Bailey fell short of the averages recorded by the 21-year-old, recording 3.89 progressive carries and 1.83 successful take-ons per 90, via FBref, highlighting the work that the 26-year-old may have to put in to compete with the club’s target.

Having also been hailed as a “dangerous” player in attack by Mango, Emery could capture a highly promising threat to integrate into his side, in a move that could challenge Bailey’s position in the squad.

Vinay Kumar hat-trick as Karnataka dominate Mumbai

ScorecardVinay Kumar took 6 for 34, including a hat-trick, to blow Mumbai away for 173 on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy quarter-final in Nagpur. Invigorated by their captain’s display, Karnataka’s batsmen responded with a strong start to end the day on 115 for 1 and put them within striking distance of the first-innings lead.In the morning, with the game only a few minutes old, Vinay set a few records tumbling. He dismissed in-form opener Prithvi Shaw off the last ball of the first over, after the batsman tried to punch one off the backfoot and away from his body. The ball shaped away enough to catch the outside edge for Karun Nair to snaffle the chance at first slip. Nair teamed up with Vinay again in the first ball of the third over when Jay Bista attempted a similar shot to Shaw’s. This time Nair plucked a one-handed catch to leave Mumbai 7 for 2. Vinay completed the second hat-trick of his career after fast bowler Akash Parkar, promoted to the top of the order, was trapped in front to an inswinger. Vinay became the sixth bowler, and the first captain, to take a hat-trick in the knockouts of the Ranji Trophy.Karnataka’s seamers continued to bore into Mumbai’s batting order. Vinay struck again to have Siddhesh Lad caught behind before S Aravind and Abhimanyu Mithun took over to send back vice-captain Suryakumar Yadav and captain Aditya Tare cheaply. Mumbai were 49 for 6 and slipped to 95 for 8 as Vinay broke Akhil Herwadkar’s resistance (32 off 75 balls).Vinay went on to have Karsh Kothari caught behind for Gautam’s third catch and Mumbai, at 103 for 9, were in danger of embarrassing themselves before Dhawal Kulkarni bailed them out with a 132-ball 75, including nine fours and two sixes. Kulkarni effectively played lone ranger in his 70-run last wicket stand with Shivam Malhotra, who resisted 41 balls for seven runs, before Aravind removed him. In reply, Karnataka’s openers R Samarth (40) and Mayank Agarwal (62*) put on 83 before the former was cleaned up by seamer Shivam Dubey.

Australia scrambling to keep series alive

Big picture

It is as it never was. But in recent times, and especially in the subcontinent, as it always was. Australia are in danger of losing a series well before its end and their players, by their own admission, seem no closer to solving the issues plaguing them. The remarkable thing is that in each of their matches, including the T20I in Ranchi where they were 49 for 1 after the Powerplay, their initial position was one of considerable strength.Virat Kohli, after scalping the rain-hit first T20I, expressed surprise at having to work hard to chase 48 runs in six overs when his bowlers had kept the opposition to 118 in 18.4. If Australia’s middle order had batted more carefully, the DLS equation might have asked more of India, who like to build in the early part of their batting innings.Such thoughts can be frustrating just as easily as they can be comforting. “We’re just one step away, lads” David Warner might say to his troops at their team meeting in Guwahati. “Tell us what we need to do, skip,” they might reply. “If I knew that, we wouldn’t be losing, would we?” That line has been used more than once in the time the Australians have been in India. Mostly in jest, but perhaps also to prevent airing their weaknesses to the global community, which often tends to include opposition batsmen, bowlers, captains and coaches.India, on the other hand, have dominated all departments. Their newer players have accepted important roles and thrived. While that is cause for celebration, a lot of their success recently has come at home and Kohli himself said, after the Bangalore ODI, that they can’t consider themselves world beaters until they do just as well abroad.

In the spotlight

If there is one Australian cricketer who has enhanced his reputation during the course of this tour, it is Marcus Stoinis. He looked out of place against spin in the first ODI, but since then has handled the threat quite competently. That he bowled an average of seven overs per game in the ODI series was a sign of his improvement as an allrounder. He was unable to play the Ranchi game, despite being named as a replacement for the injured Steven Smith, because he was back home at the time. But he has joined the squad now and is all but certain to play in Guwahati. He wasn’t at the crease for a long time in Ranchi, but after a little layoff Shikhar Dhawan would have enjoyed it nonetheless. Of course, he would have preferred the opportunity to face more than 12 balls and that may well come his way on Tuesday, with the series on the line.

Team news

India don’t really have much cause to fiddle with their team, unless there are last-minute injuries or thoughts of experimentation.India (probable) 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Virat Kohli (capt), 4 Manish Pandey, 5 Kedar Jadhav, 6 MS Dhoni (wk), 7 Hardik Pandya, 8 Kuldeep Yadav, 9 Yuzvendra Chahal, 10 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 11 Jasprit BumrahGlenn Maxwell, as explosive as he is, hasn’t been solid enough to make that matter. He was dropped in the ODI series for that mistake and he may well suffer the same now.Australia (probable) 1 David Warner (capt), 2 Aaron Finch, 3 Travis Head, 4 Moises Henriques/Glenn Maxwell, 5 Marcus Stoinis, 6 Dan Christian, 7 Tim Paine (wk), 8 Nathan Coulter-Nile, 9 Adam Zampa/ Andrew Tye, 10 Kane Richardson, 11 Jason Behrendorff

Pitch and conditions

The new Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati will host its first international match, although the city has already hosted international cricket before – from as early as 1983.

Stats and trivia

  • Kohli averages 54 in T20Is, and if he lives up to those numbers, he will comfortably pass Tillakaratne Dilshan and become the second-highest scorer in the format in international cricket.
  • Since the last of his 12 fifties for Australia in March 2016, Warner averages 16.5 with four single-digit scores in eight innings.

Quotes

“It’s a nice ground, the wicket looks fantastic. The first game being played here; it’s going to be a special one for both teams. Hopefully we can get across the line and get that first victory here.”

Hemang Amin appointed COO of IPL

The BCCI has named Hemang Amin as the new chief operating officer of the Indian Premier League. Amin has been associated with the BCCI for the last seven years and has, more relevantly, played an active role in the “management and operations” of the IPL. Amin, who will continue to report to BCCI CEO Rahul Johri, has most recently served as the board’s assistant general manager (finance, commercial and events).Amin’s appointment comes after more than a year-and-a-half of the COO’s office remaining vacant following the resignation of Sundar Raman. The appointment of a COO for the IPL is also one of the recommendations of the Lodha Committee that was approved by the Supreme Court.Rajiv Shukla, the IPL chairman, praised Amin for his “incredible breadth of experience and relationships” across a variety of markets. “Having worked with him firsthand, I know he will be a fine leader for the IPL and will bring unmatched innovation, passion, and vision to the role,” he said.CK Khanna, the BCCI’s acting president, hailed Amin’s leadership and credited him for handling a “pivotal transition period” for the IPL. “His leadership over the past seven years has shaped IPL’s strategy, laying a strong foundation for future course, improvements and success.”Amin’s immediate challenge will be to frame the guidelines pertaining to the release, transfer and retention of players ahead of the auction before IPL 2018 that will see the return of Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals.

Tottenham: Spurs Now Agree To Sell "Reliable" Star

Tottenham Hotspur have agreed to sell defender Davinson Sanchez to Spartak Moscow after accepting their bid, but they're waiting on his green-light.

Who will leave Spurs this summer?

As new manager Ange Postecoglou slowly but surely reshapes the team in his own image, bringing in three major signings since his appointment, certain Spurs squad members could be shown the door.

Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, playmaker James Maddison and winger Manor Solomon have all joined the club for a combined fee of over £60 million.

That's not even counting the fees to sign Pedro Porro and Dejan Kulusevski on permanent deals after their loans, which would take Tottenham's total summer outlay to around £117 million.

ange-postecoglou

The Lilywhites aren't done there, either, as reliable media sources claim they're chasing two senior centre-back signings this summer.

Wolfsburg's Micky van de Ven, Edmond Tapsoba of Bayer Leverkusen, Fulham's Tosin Adarabioyo, Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet, Galatasary's Victor Nelsson and Juventus star Gleison Bremer have all been linked with moves to Spurs recently.

To fund these swoops, it's imperative Tottenham offload more fringe players after Harry Winks, who left to join Leicester City around the same time Spurs signed Maddison.

Of the players who could make way, Hugo Lloris, Ivan Perisic Ryan Sessegnon, Eric Dier, Ben Davies, Giovani Lo Celso, Sergio Reguilon and Tanguy Ndombele have all been previously mentioned as candidates – depending on pre-season (The Telegraph).

Meanwhile, Denmark international Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is reliably believed to be nearing the exit door after agreeing personal terms with La Liga giants Atletico Madrid (The Times).

There have been claims this week that Sanchez, who is attracting serious interest from Spartak Moscow in Russia, is also "very close" to departing.

davinson-sanchez-tottenham-hotspur

This is echoed by The Athletic and journalist Charlie Eccleshare, who say that Tottenham have indeed accepted Spartak's £12.9 million bid for the Colombian.

As Postecoglou's side agree to sell Sanchez, the issue isn't club-to-club, but rather the player himself – who is still yet to agree personal terms and hasn't yet decided whether he will make the move.

The 27-year-old apparently holds reservations over a move to the Russian Premier League, so there is currently scepticism as to whether he will join Spartak.

If Sanchez does give the green-light, it is believed that two other defenders could follow him out the door – namely Japhet Tanganga and Wales international Joe Rodon.

The latter duo have been made available for either a loan or permanent sale as Postecoglou continues to orchestrate an overhaul.

How good is Davinson Sanchez?

The former Ajax star came under fierce criticism from sections of the fanbase last season and hasn't quite lived up to his £40 million price tag.

That being said, he's had his bright moments, with former Spurs manager Antonio Conte even praising his reliability and attitude at one point over 2022/2023.

Conte claimed he is a "reliable player" to have in the Tottenham squad, namely because of his attitude and application despite not being selected regularly.

“I want also to tell Sanchez. He played his last game in the starting 11 two months ago. He worked very hard and very well. To see him tonight to have this performance, makes me and my staff very happy,” Conte said.

“When we have players like Sanchez and Joe Rodon. A reliable player who doesn’t play but works very hard, the staff are very happy.”

Celtic: Transfer insider drops Wilfried Ndidi update

Celtic would find it 'tough' to finance a deal to sign Leicester City midfielder Wilfried Ndidi this window, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Will Celtic sign Wilfried Ndidi this summer?

Last month, The Daily Mail reported that Celtic were interested in making a move to sign Ndidi this summer following Leicester City's relegation to the Sky Bet Championship.

In 2022/23, Ndidi made 30 appearances for the Foxes in all competitions, as per Transfermarkt; however, he couldn't help to prevent Leicester City's slide into the English second tier despite his best efforts.

According to WhoScored, the 26-year-old still got through plenty of work in the engine room, making around 2.3 tackles per match in the Premier League.

Brendan Rodgers left Leicester City by mutual consent back in April and has since taken over at Celtic, bringing in Marco Tilio and Odin Thiago Holm as his first two additions of the window.

The Scottish Sun understand that the Irishman has a transfer kitty of around £30 million to play with between now and the close of play in the market, signifying that some high-profile signings could be likely to walk through the door at Parkhead.

Nevertheless, transfer insider Jones thinks that Celtic would struggle to finance a deal for Ndidi to bolster their midfield despite his obvious links to Hoops boss Rodgers.

Speaking to Football FanCast, Jones said: "Tough deal to do, in the best of times. I think financially and just through the links to Rodgers and Leicester being too obvious for me. I haven't heard anything that actually properly stands the story up. So again, it's one I'm holding with caution right now."

Who could Brendan Rodgers look to recruit at Celtic?

Given that Ndidi earns around £75,000 per week at Leicester City and would likely cost a significant transfer fee, Celtic will probably shift their focus to alternative targets as Rodgers looks to keep the Hoops at the top of Scottish football.

Names linked have been few and far between as the 50-year-old coach examines his squad in a pre-season training camp in Portugal; however, Celtic will surely spring to life in the next few weeks and start adding quality in key positions.

According to Ukrainian outlet Sport Novyny via 67 Hail Hail, Celtic are among the leading candidates to land Shakhtar Donetsk winger Tete, who spent last season on loan at Leicester City, as he intends to leave the club due to fears over his safety in the region.

Young Boys midfielder Fabian Reider has also been tentatively linked with a move to Celtic this summer; nevertheless, it is unclear how much these rumours have been substantiated as excitement over potential new arrivals reaches fever pitch in the Scottish media.

Football Scotland understand that Celtic have agreed a fee with Gangwon for talented winger Yang Hyun-jun, though they are keen to hold on to him for now due to being embroiled in a relegation battle and want to retain his services until later this year.

Working under the radar, it wouldn't be surprising to see Celtic announce some big arrivals in the not-too-distant future as they prepare to defend their Scottish Premiership crown in 2023/24.
