Ipswich eyeing "outstanding" signing to compete with Tuanzebe

Kieran McKenna's precarious situation at Portman Road has, no doubt, added a lot of unnecessary distractions to proceedings in Suffolk when transfer targets should be the main priority.

Ipswich will just be praying that he stays put instead of heading out of the door to the likes of Brighton and Hove Albion or Manchester United, with a report from football journalist David Ornstein stating that he could sign a brand new deal very shortly to put an end to all this unwanted speculation.

If that is the case, Ipswich will soon look to press on with a number of deals, which includes this Tottenham Hotspur defender being reportedly on the agenda.

Ipswich looking at hijacking deal

Lilywhite Rose podcast contributor John Wenham has speculated that Ipswich are in for Spurs defender Japhet Tanganga this summer, stating that there was "some talk" involving the 25-year-old wanting to test himself in the Premier League, having starred on loan with Millwall last season in the division below.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Japhet Tanganga.

This would see Ipswich hijack a potential deal between the Lions and Spurs, with the Mirror reporting earlier in the month that Tanganga was going to relocate to the Den permanently after being allowed to head for the exit door for good by his parent club.

How Tanganga compares to Tuanzebe

Excelling in the second-tier in patches with Millwall – scoring two goals when coming up from the back from 18 total games in the league – Ipswich might view the 6-foot defender as a smart purchase to add strength in depth to the defensive areas ahead of the major step-up.

The two-time England U21 international would also push Axel Tuanzebe all the way on his arrival too, with the wantaway Spurs man capable of playing either at right-back or in a centre-back spot much like the former Man United defender.

Similar in many aspects of their game when glancing at the table above, with Tanganga beating his Ipswich counterpart in some areas defensively with more duels won and more clearances registered per game this season just gone, the 25-year-old would be a good utility option to get into the building this summer.

Tanganga's addition to the Ipswich ranks could even begin to be the end of Tuanzebe in a Tractor Boys strip, with the ex-Red Devils man burning a significant hole in the Suffolk club's back pocket at £20k-per-week considering his in-and-out nature in the first-team.

With Tanganga pocketing a healthy £25k-per-week, Tuanzebe potentially exiting could finance a deal to take place for the Spurs defender to join.

The 26-year-old did start the last four Ipswich games of the season, performing to the best of his ability when the pressure was on with six duels won on the final day, but Tanganga could now be viewed as an upgrade on the high earner.

Once described as being an "outstanding" talent by Gabriel Agbonlahor when still aiming to make it at Spurs, with the defender amassing 50 first-team appearances across a number of seasons, Portman Road might now be his next permanent home where he might show off his Millwall best regularly even when making the leap up.

Able to offer Ipswich more depth in the centre-back spots as well, with more numbers arguably needed here as well to compete with the likes of George Edmundson and Cameron Burgess, Tanganga looks to tick a lot of boxes when it comes to summer buys coming in that are ready to battle away in the top-flight.

Tony Opatha, who led Sri Lanka's rebel tour to South Africa in 1982, dies

He is remembered as arguably Sri Lanka’s finest seam bowlers of the 1970s

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Sep-2020Former Sri Lanka seamer Tony Opatha has died from a suspected stroke on Friday morning in Colombo, at the age of 73. He was in hospital for past several days.Opatha had played five ODIs, across the 1975 and 1979 World Cups, and was known as a domestic stalwart through the 1970s, playing for the Air Force – of which he was a serviceman – and the Nondescripts Cricket Club. He also played a year of club cricket in Ireland, and later played in the Netherlands. He is remembered as arguably Sri Lanka’s finest seam bowlers of the 1970s, largely due to his brisk pace and control. He had been among the islands’ first cricketers to play club cricket in England and was influential in creating similar opportunities for other Sri Lankan players of the era.Opatha also infamously led Sri Lanka’s rebel tour to South Africa in 1982-83 as a player-cum-manager, for which he and his teammates were given life bans and attracted harsh judgement from both Sri Lanka’s government and the island’s cricket establishment. Opatha eventually won back some acceptance; in 2018, he was among 49 players to be honoured by Sri Lanka Cricket for their services to cricket.

Suggestion striker scoring once every 5 shots now wants to sign for Celtic

There has been a suggestion this week that an in-form striker who is scoring once every five shots he takes this season wants to sign for Celtic in the summer transfer window.

Celtic transfer news

The Hoops continue to be linked with new signings ahead of this summer, with Brendan Rodgers wanting to add fresh blood to his squad, even if they do seal yet another Scottish Premiership crown.

Cremonese midfielder Charles Pickel is one potential target for Celtic, with scouts sent to watch the "charismatic" ace in action, while Brondby goalkeeper Patrick Pentz has emerged as an option to replace the soon-to-be-retired Joe Hart when he hangs up his boots at the end of the season.

He isn't the only 'keeper who has been mooted as Hart's successor between the sticks, however, with Liverpool stopper Caoimhin Kelleher linked, too, should he look to leave the Reds and aim to be first-choice elsewhere. That won't be the case for him there as long as Alisson is around.

It is also important for Celtic to retain the services of some of their most influential players, and left-back Greg Taylor falls into that bracket, proving to be a consistent performer. He is now expected to sign a new deal at Parkhad, acting a significant boost.

Celtic back to sign red-hot striker

Speaking to The Daily Record, Steve Evans backed Bristol City star Tommy Conway to make a move to Celtic this summer, suggesting that he would be keen on heading to Parkhead: "The last player I recommended Celtic should sign, when I got a call from the manager, was the boy who went from MK Dons who’s now worth multi-millions (Matt O'Riley).

"I see a lot of Celtic – they’re the only club other than Rotherham that I’d have left Stevenage for – and if you’re asking me, could Conway play at Celtic? Absolutely. Get in the car and go today, he could play there.

"But he’s also at a very good football club here with lots to achieve and if I was Liam Manning I’d be saying to the board, ‘we need to keep players like that, if we’re genuinely going to challenge for the Premier League.' He might want to go to Celtic, but you can’t (let him), he’s a gifted boy."

Tommy Conway for Bristol City.

Conway would be such an exciting addition to Celtic's squad, should all parties be keen on a move being agreed in the summer, having shone so much for Bristol City this season.

Still only 21 years of age, the Scotland Under-21 international has 10 goals in 26 Championship starts in 2023/24 to date – that comes from just 53 shots, with a near one-in-five average – and his overall record for his current side stands at 25 strikes in 91 outings. Former manager Nigel Pearson has been an admirer for some time, too, saying back in 2022 that he is "very hungry for success and he works exceptionally hard and on a physical level and a psychological level".

Chelsea hold talks with "elite" £10.5m-a-year Pochettino replacement

A Sky Sports reporter has lifted the lid on some talks between Chelsea and an "elite manager", with Mauricio Pochettino leaving Stamford Bridge by mutual consent on Tuesday.

Pochettino exit confirmed after Chelsea announcement

Uncertainty surrounded the future of Pochettino in the build up to Tuesday evening, despite a brilliant end to the Premier League campaign where the club qualified for Europe after winning all of their last five league games, averaging nearly three goals per game in that run.

Chelsea hoping to tempt Laporta with £68 million bid for Barcelona star

The Blues are plotting an audacious new summer swoop.

ByEmilio Galantini May 21, 2024

As well as this, Pochettino guided Chelsea to a Carabao Cup final and FA Cup semi-final, with the Blues also finishing just five points off a top four place in the end. While the first half of 2023/2024 clearly wasn't good enough, especially after Todd Boehly and co pumped over £400 million into Pochettino's squad last summer, there was at least a hint of positivity and something to build upon towards the latter stages.

Chelsea 2-1 Bournemouth

Brighton 1-2 Chelsea

Nottingham Forest 2-3 Chelsea

Chelsea 5-0 West Ham

Chelsea 2-0 West Ham

However, the board clearly couldn't see a way forward with the ex-Spurs boss, and the feeling was apparently mutual. Chelsea announced that Pochettino has left the club by mutual consent, with Boehly, Behdad Eghbali, Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley now tasked with finding the Argentine's replacement.

Even before Pochettino's departure, Chelsea were doing their due-diligence on managerial candidates, in the event he left. Roberto De Zerbi has been discussed internally as a top candidate at Chelsea, according to some reports, with the Italian also keen to make the move to west London.

It's also believed that Boehly could even consider former head coaches to succeed Pochettino. Antonio Conte has been linked with a surprise return to Chelsea, with Thomas Tuchel named as another potential option as he prepares to part with his £10.5m-a-year salary at Bayern Munich.

Chelsea hold "loose talks" with Tuchel to replace Pochettino

According to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg, Chelsea have held loose talks with Tuchel over replacing Pochettino, and the German has been "waiting" for his former side's official announcement over parting company with their now-ex manager.

Given how bitterly things ended between Tuchel and the current Chelsea board nearly two years ago, it would be a shock to see him make the return, but he certainly has his credentials given that he even guided them to a Champions League title in 2021.

Called an "elite manager" by Paul Ince, defender Ben Chilwell has also praised Tuchel as an "unbelievable" coach.

“As players, we have confidence in the manager. We know we are not going to get a better manager,” said Chilwell (via Standard Sport).

“I am not just saying it, he is unbelievable. I think he has a lot of trust in us. Now there’s that stability, which could have potentially been tricky, is now resolved it is up to us to work and try and get consistency on the pitch."

Tielemans isn’t the only Villa star who’s just made himself undroppable

Aston Villa may have had a major say in the 2023/24 Premier League title race following their stunning 2-0 win over Arsenal on Sunday.

The Gunners were the form team in the top flight heading into the game, going undefeated this year, but Villa shocked the home side with two late goals to secure all three points.

It was precisely the tonic they needed after failing to defeat Brentford last weekend with several players shining against Mikel Arteta’s side, most notably Youri Tielemans.

Youri Tielemans’ stats vs Arsenal

The Belgian may have endured an underwhelming first few months at Villa Park – starting just four league matches until the turn of the year – but he has enjoyed a purple patch of late.

Since January, the former Leicester City gem has grabbed three assists and scored once in the top flight, emerging as a key player for Unai Emery which culminated in a wonderful display against Arsenal.

He was deployed alongside John McGinn at the heart of the midfield and registered an assist along with making one key pass, creating a big chance, and succeeding with 100% of his dribble attempts, proving to be a nuisance going forward.

Tielemans even shone defensively, winning six of his ten ground duels contested while making four tackles and two interceptions during the clash. With no Douglas Luiz due to suspension, this was a vital outing from the former Leicester man.

Youri Tielemans in Astom Villa training

This performance surely merits another start against Lille in the second leg of their Europa Conference League quarter-final tie on Thursday, and he could be joined by Leon Bailey, who also proved he is undroppable after enjoying an excellent cameo from the bench.

Why Leon Bailey is now undroppable at Aston Villa

The Jamaican winger is enjoying a special season for Villa, scoring 13 times along with notching 12 assists across all competitions. He has been Villa’s most dangerous attacking threat alongside Ollie Watkins this term.

Surprisingly, he found himself dropped to the bench against the Gunners, with Emery favouring Moussa Diaby on the right of his midfield.

Aston Villa forward Leon Bailey.

With just under half an hour to go, Bailey came on for Diaby and immediately looked lively as he attempted two dribbles, won three of his five total duels and lost possession just four times.

With six minutes of normal time remaining, Bailey converted at the far post to put Villa 1-0 up. Watkins doubled the advantage just minutes later to secure a famous victory, which also meant the side had done the league double over the north Londoners.

The winger was given a match rating of 7/10 for his display by Birmingham Live, and he should come back into the starting XI against Lille on Thursday.

Once hailed as a “standout” by journalist Ashley Preece despite a tough start to the season under Steven Gerrard last year, his displays under Emery have allowed him to showcase his true talents, becoming one of Villa's most important players in the process.

West Indies look to keep series alive against Sri Lanka in clash of equals

The side that best adapts to the ground’s particular challenges will win

The Preview by Andrew Fidel Fernando25-Feb-2020Big pictureAs the action moves from the leafy surrounds of the SSC to the jungles of the southeast, both teams may ponder their shortcomings from the first game. Neither middle-order quite fired. West Indies lost five wickets for 68 runs while Sri Lanka might reflect they could have done better than lose their first four wickets within 57 runs after a century opening stand, then their next four for 61. Sri Lanka’s spinners failed to produce wickets through the middle overs and West Indies’ quicks were modest under the pressure of a tight finish. But although these are clearly flawed teams, they also appeared to be evenly matched. Aside, perhaps, from Sri Lanka’s 111-run opening stand, there was no sustained period of dominance from either side. A wicket would fall to clip a burgeoning stand short or a spate of boundaries would frequently break the shackles. Each side has promising young players – most notably Keemo Paul and Wanindu Hasaranga from the first match – and captains who took over in moments of crisis last year. Both sides have relatively settled XIs for now, but several players are only a few bad performances away from having their places questioned.Given the similarities, it may be the side that best adapts to the Sooriyawewa ground’s particular challenges that wins. There can sometimes be a fierce crosswind at the venue. Sri Lanka have occasionally used the wind to the advantage of their swing bowlers, but have more often found that it messes with bowlers’ accuracy and flight. Batsmen, meanwhile, have had success largely targeting the downwind side of the ground, and hit aerially into the wind at their peril.Form guideWest Indies LWWWL

It wasn’t quite a flawless effort, but almost – no catches were dropped, two run outs were clinically affected and the ground fielding was reliable. Coach Mickey Arthur has spoken glowingly about the improvements in Sri Lanka’s fielding standards over the last few months, and so far, his team seems to be proving him right.Shai Hope, Saturday’s only centurion, has been putting together quite a record in recent years. His overall ODI average is impressive enough at 51.90, but his average as an opener is 91.88 after 21 innings, and seven of his nine centuries have come from the top of the order. Perhaps even more consequential to this series is his average in Asia, which after 15 innings, is a whopping 123.66. With so many of his team-mates capable of making rapid runs, Hope is increasingly the trunk around which West Indies build their innings.Team newsKieron Pollard seemed averse to the idea of making many changes to the XI. They may toy with the idea of bringing in left-arm spinner Fabian Allen for Hayden Walsh Jr, who took two wickets, but conceded 38 runs from five overs.West Indies (possible): 1 Sunil Ambris, 2 Shai Hope (wk), 3 Darren Bravo, 4 Roston Chase, 5 Nicholas Pooran, 6 Kieron Pollard (capt), 7 Jason Holder, 8 Fabian Allen, 9 Keemo Paul, 10 Alzarri Joseph, 11 Sheldon CottrellWith Thisara Perera’s bowling in the Powerplay having proved successful in the first ODI, Sri Lanka may stick with the same XI.Sri Lanka (possible): 1 Dimuth Karunaratne (capt), 2 Avishka Fernando, 3 Kusal Perera (wk), 4 Kusal Mendis, 5 Angelo Mathews, 6 Dhananjaya de Silva, 7 Thisara Perera, 8 Wanindu Hasaranga, 9 Isuru Udana, 10 Lakshan Sandakan, 11 Nuwan PradeepPitch and conditionsGenerally, the Sooriyawewa pitch is one of the quicker tracks in the country though that is not to say it doesn’t also take turn. It is also one of the hottest venues in the country, but if the wind is around, the players may get some relief.Stats and trivia West Indies have never won an ODI series in Sri Lanka. Their best result came in December 1993, when they drew 1-1. Shai Hope averages over 60 in each of the last two calendar years, which is largely when he has opened the innings. Outside opening the innings, his best record is at No. 5, where he has batted three times and averages 42.5. Lakshan Sandakan has gone wicketless in seven of his last eight ODIs. Though he also has not been granted a consistent place in the XI through that period.

Samu Omorodion: Why are Chelsea interested in €50m-rated Atletico Madrid striker with just nine senior goals?

The Blues have already had one offer rejected for the 20-year-old as they go in search of attacking reinforcements

It's been clear for some time that one of Chelsea's priorities for this summer's transfer window is a new centre-forward. While Nicolas Jackson went some way to silencing his doubters as last season progressed, he remains a work in progress who would benefit from having some of the scoring burden relieved from his shoulders.

Over the past few months, the Blues have been linked with a host of huge names with fearsome records in front of goal. Napoli hotshot Victor Osimhen, for example, as well as Feyenoord sensation Santiago Gimenez and RB Leipzig starlet Benjamin Sesko.

However, once the window opened, and new manager Enzo Maresca was installed at the helm, Chelsea fans were forced to temper their expectations significantly. First, Aston Villa's Jhon Duran – who scored just five Premier League goals last campaign – was touted for a move to Stamford Bridge. Then, Samu Omorodion was linked.

Reports in June claimed that Chelsea submitted a bid worth as much as €40 million (£34m/£43m), once potential add-ons were taken into account, for the Atletico Madrid man – an offer Los Rojiblancos turned down. When the surprise news broke, Blues fans scrambled to Google to find out more about their potential new No.9. And what they found would have hardly inspired confidence.

The bottom line is that Omorodion only scored eight goals last season, which might make it difficult to see why Chelsea have rekindled their interest in the centre-forward, with Gianluca Di Marzio reporting that the club could be willing to go as high as €50m (£43m/$55m) to get a deal done. There is, however, more to the physical striker than meets the eye, as GOAL discovered when delving into his story so far.

Where it all began

Born to Nigerian parents in Melilla, an autonomous Spanish city that borders Morocco on the North African coast, Omorodion moved to the mainland when he was young. Initially joining local side AD Nervion in his hometown of Sevilla, he eventually signed up at Granada – a team based three hours away – in 2021.

After ironing out some kinks in his game by attending a specialist football clinic in summer 2022, he exploded for the club's Under-19 side the following season. Omorodion would plunder 14 goals in just 29 regular season games, before making a decisive impact in the Segunda Federation promotion play-offs.

He would net three times across the two-legged semi-finals against Utebo FC before scoring again in the second leg of the final to clinch promotion for Granada. Those exploits were enough to earn him a five-year contract, as well as apparent interest from several Premier League sides.

AdvertisementThe big break

After proving himself at reserve-team level, Granada took a close look at Omorodion during pre-season and he sufficiently impressed to earn a shock start on their opening day, La Liga clash against Atletico Madrid. As if this wasn't enough of a surprise, he even managed to mark his senior debut with a goal!

Following a sloppy Atleti turnover in their own third, Gonzalo Villar fizzed a wicked ball across the front post and Omorodion burst past his marker to turn it into the net. His celebration was everything you might expect from a 19-year-old netting an equaliser against Atletico on their maiden start, with his sizable frame flopping forward after an overly enthusiastic knee-slide attempt.

Things were about to get even better for Omorodion too. A few days later, Atletico would exercise the €6m (£5m/$6.4m) release clause in his contract, with the forward signing a five-year contract in the Spanish capital. But he would barely have time to get his feet under the table at the Metropolitano, with Atleti immediately sending him out on loan to Alaves.

Getty ImagesHow it's going

Omorodion made a fairly slow start to life in his new surroundings. Initially, veteran striker Kike Garcia was prefered up front, with his less-experienced team-mate making do with substitute appearances in his first four games. Eventually, though, his time came.

Omorodion was finally handed a start against Celta Vigo in late September, and he made the most of the faith shown in him, scoring a vital equaliser 17 minutes from time. Over the following months, Omorodion would establish himself as his side's go-to striker, though it wasn't all plain sailing. A shaky opening half to the season left Alaves in genuine relegation peril, though their prodigious centre-forward's form helped them pull away from the drop zone after Christmas.

By February, Omorodion had eight goals to his name and his team were close to being safe. After that, though, things nosedived on a personal level. Omorodion would not add to this tally at all during his final 12 Liga games of the campaign.

At this point, it's worth noting that he was not the only Alaves player who struggled to post impressive scoring numbers last season. Under Luis Garcia, they were one of the most defensive sides in La Liga, with no team in the division averaging less than their 41.8 percent average possession, and only Rayo Vallecano, Las Palmas, Mallorca and relegated Cadiz scoring fewer goals. Omorodion can still feel a sense of satisfaction, though, as he comfortably finished as the team's top scorer.

After returning to Atletico Madrid at the end of the campaign, he was called up by Spain for the Olympics, scoring a late consolation goal in his side's group-stage defeat to Egypt.

Biggest strengths

Omorodion's physical profile seems perfect for the Premier League. Not only does he stand at 6'4, he's well built, allowing him to fend off defenders. When he takes the ball with his back to goal, he's incredibly hard to dispossess and has the technique to drive forward too. This was useful for a side like Alaves, who used him as an out ball to relieve some pressure.

The bulk of Omorodion's goals last season were scored from inside the box, which speaks to his clever movement in the final third.

Despite his height, Omorodion is deceptively quick, especially across the first five yards or so. This means he excels creating separation from defenders in congested spaces. In theory then, provided the balls into the box are of sufficient quality, Omorodion should accumulate plenty of high-quality chances. His expected goals numbers from last season back this up, as he registered 0.51 xG per 90 minutes.

And while the fact that he underperformed his xG considerably in La Liga suggests that he is not the finished product in terms of his shooting, there are reasons to be positive. His strikes were nicely spread between his right foot, left foot and head, showing hints of the accomplished presence he could become with the correct guidance.

Shahadat Hossain banned for five years for assaulting team-mate

Shahadat Hossain, the Bangladeshi fast bowler, has been banned for five years, with two years suspended, following an incident during a National Cricket League (NCL) game in Khulna when he physically assaulted team-mate Arafat Sunny Jr on the field. The 33-year-old Dhaka Division player was withdrawn from the game against Khulna Division after allegedly hitting Sunny, apparently following an argument about shining the ball – Sunny refused to shine the ball for the paceman. Those who saw the incident said it needed the Dhaka players’ intervention to restrain Hossain. His actions amounted to a Level 4 offence and he was handed a fine of BDT 100,000 (USD 1200 approx.) by the Bangladesh Cricket Board. The NCL’s technical committee made the decision on Tuesday afternoon, leaving Shahadat with a chance to appeal against the penalty by November 26.”We have banned Shahadat Hossain for five years with two years of suspended sentence,” Minhajul Abedin, the chief selector who is part of the NCL’s committee, said after their meeting in Dhaka. “He can appeal by November 26. He has been reported with a Level 4 offence, based upon which the technical committee took the decision.”What he did was very unfortunate. These incidents keep happening. BCB has a zero-tolerance policy for these things. No player will be spared. We have considered his previous history before taking this decision. It should serve as an example for all cricketers.”Meanwhile, according to local newspaper reports, Dhaka pacer Mohammad Shahid could also be punished, after it emerged that he had been mentioned in the match officials’ report for starting the scrap with Sunny. Shahid has reportedly admitted to his guilt.Hossain, who has played 38 Tests, 51 ODIs and six T20Is between 2005 and 2015, hasn’t been in the national frame since he was arrested in 2015 for beating up his domestic help, which led to a temporary suspension.

If a slot in the XI isn't empty, then you just wait for your chance – Shahbaz Nadeem

The left-arm spinner made his first-class debut before any of his India team-mates in the Ranchi Test, but the wait has been worth it for the man from Jharkhand

Karthik Krishnaswamy in Ranchi21-Oct-20191:24

‘Watched cricket for too long on TV, wanted to be on it’ – Nadeem

The ball is dangled up, above the batsman’s eyeline. He leaves his crease, almost involuntarily, to try and reach it. He ends up getting nowhere near it.The ball does two devious things. It drifts in first, and that causes the batsman to open up, again almost involuntarily. Then it spins far more than the batsman expects, and he’s left groping for it as it rips past his outside edge.T Bavuma st Saha b Nadeem 32.It’s a classic left-arm spinner’s dismissal, and it’s quite a way to get your first wicket in Test cricket. For Shahbaz Nadeem, it also happened to be his 425th in first-class cricket.Watch cricket on ESPN+

India v South Africa is available in the US on Hotstar and ESPN+. Subscribe to ESPN+ and tune in to the Ranchi Test.

Nadeem has been playing first-class cricket since December 2004. Every other member of this India XI made their first-class debut after him. It’s quite a story: he began playing for Jharkhand at 15, and was nearly twice as old when he made his Test debut. He has learned plenty in the intervening years. He began as a purveyor of flat and quickish left-arm spin, and gradually evolved into the kind of bowler he’s now become.”When I began, I was really young, and our team was mostly built around fast bowling,” he said at the end of the third day’s play. “We didn’t really have spinners. Basically, we would mostly play on green wickets, and when I used to bowl fast on green wickets the ball used to skid onto the bat quickly.”So I realised that if I have to play on green wickets, I’ll have to start flighting the ball, and I’ll have to change my bowling so that I can get whatever little purchase I can off the pitch, which I won’t get with a flatter trajectory. The changes began there, after 2-3 years, and I began learning flight variations in order to get wickets even on those pitches. You can say that it helped me to not get helpful wickets at that early stage.”It was an interesting exercise to watch Nadeem bowl in tandem with Ravindra Jadeja, who is among the quickest spinners in world cricket. It isn’t that Jadeja doesn’t vary his pace or trajectory. There was an over, for instance, where he bowled two flighted deliveries wide of off stump that Temba Bavuma drove towards the two fielders in the covers. Jadeja followed this with a quicker, flatter one on a similar length that gave Bavuma no time to get forward to. It ripped off the pitch with extra bounce and beat the outside edge by a big margin.Nadeem’s variations are a little subtler, and there is a bit of Rangana Herath about him, in the sense that he looks to create different angles by varying his release points and wrist positions, while still trying to get most of his deliveries to end up within the line of the stumps. That wicket-to-wicket line kept the right-hand batsmen on a tight leash: in the first innings, they faced 42 balls from him but only managed two scoring shots. Before he was stumped off that hypnotically flighted ball, Bavuma had faced seven balls from Nadem and scored no runs. There is obvious quality in Nadeem’s bowling, but he’s still only fourth-choice among India’s Test spinners, behind Jadeja, R Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav, whose troublesome shoulder paved the way for his inclusion here in Ranchi. Nadeem is realistic about where he stands, but he knows he’ll be in and around the squad if he maintains his levels of performance.”This was the motivation, the chance I got here,” Nadeem said. “The motivation came from knowing that I might get a chance if something happened to someone. Whichever spinners we have, they’re all doing well. As a cricketer, you have to realise that the slot you’re fighting for, it has to be empty in the first place. If it isn’t empty, you just wait for your chance.”The wait has lasted many years, some of which have brought bucketloads of first-class wickets. There were 51 Ranji Trophy wickets in the 2015-16 season, and 56 the season after that. To many watching from outside, it can seem like a difficult wait, but first-class cricketers enjoy first-class cricket for its own sake too. Even when he’s away playing for, say, India A, Nadeem says Jharkhand, his first-class team, always remains on his mind.”We enjoy [playing first-class cricket] a lot,” Nadeem said. “Playing for Jharkhand is a motivation too, because whoever my team-mates are at Jharkhand, I’ve known them for a long time, some of them for close to 15 years. I’ve played with some of them since childhood, at junior level, so it’s always fun when I play for Jharkhand, and it’s a different sort of feeling.”Wherever I might be playing, if there’s a Jharkhand match, my heart says I need to go play that match too, because apart from the match, there’s friendships and laughter as well.”If he keeps bowling the way he did on Monday, Nadeem might have to make room in his life for an entirely new set of friendships.
