Man Utd’s Casemiro is proving his worth

Manchester United raised a fair few eyebrows with their summer business, no less so than with 5 foot 9 central defender Lisandro Martinez.

He has been rock solid for the Red Devils this term but out in Qatar, another of the Dutchman’s first acquisitions is now outshining him.

Indeed, that arrival happens to be that of £70m Casemiro, who jetted to England after a distinguished career as the anchor of a Real Madrid team that completed incredible feats.

Such a fee was met with a few raised eyebrows, with the United hierarchy being accused by pundits of a “desperation” bid, despite the player himself remaining a world-class engine.

For Brazil, Casemiro has occupied the deep-lying midfield role in place of Liverpool’s Fabinho, reaffirming his stature on the world stage and the weight that he holds in the eyes of his managers.

And such a show of faith has been wondrously repaid, with his assurance and unmatched physicality providing Brazil and the squad’s creative flair to bomb forward, crushing the opposition with devastating effect.

Worth every penny

United manager Erik ten Hag described the Brazilian juggernaut as “the cement between the stones” upon completing the lucrative four-year deal, with Casemiro coming off the back of a fifth Champions League triumph, defeating Liverpool in the final for the second time.

Casemiro, still only 30 years old, has been deployed in the defensive slot at the pit pot the midfield, completing the gritty jobs that allowed Toni Kroos and Luka Modric to dominate the centre of the park with such supreme brilliance.

And completing 336 matches for Los Blancos, scoring 31 goals and serving 29 assists, has solidified Casemiro’s standing on the global stage.

In Qatar, he has flourished; as per Sofascore, Casemiro has recorded an average rating of 7.6 throughout the tournament, where he has started all but one match.

With a pass success rate of 84%, an average of 2.7 tackles per match, 1.0 clearances and 2.0 interceptions, the importance of his structured approach is unveiled.

His robust, daring escapades on the pitch allow the other player’s to flourish, and without him there would appear a veritable chasm in the Brazilian ranks, with teammates suffering from his absence, as evidenced by the 1-0 loss in the culminating group fixture against Cameroon, where the anchor was not risked with qualification already secured.

Once dubbed as a “monster” by former Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane, the moniker is indeed aptly named, with his ferocious and unflinching attitude to his play a key component by itself.

As per FBref, the £43m-rated ace ranks incredibly among defensive statistics when compared to midfielders across Europe’s big five leagues, within the top 1% for blocks and aerials won, whilst also within the top 3% for clearances and the top 7% for tackles.

Such metrics offer a clear indication as to why United parted with so much money for a player past his 30th birthday. He might have won it all in Spain, but he is showing little sign of slowing, and might yet lead the Red Devils’ to glory in the coming years.

Roofe injury ‘very frustrating’ for Rangers

Medical expert Ben Dinnery has claimed that the new injury to Kemar Roofe is ‘very frustrating’ for him and Glasgow Rangers, although not ‘alarming’.

The Lowdown: Injury setback

Giovanni van Bronckhorst confirmed in late October that the 29-year-old had suffered an injury setback and would be missing for a couple of weeks.

The striker had been carrying a knee injury from last season, although he did make his return in the 1-0 win at home to Dundee in the Scottish League Cup quarter-finals last month.

Roofe then made another substitute appearance in the 1-1 draw at home to Livingston in the Premiership, but this latest injury has kept him out ever since.

The Latest: ‘Very frustrating’

Speaking to Football Insider, Dinnery – who runs the Premier Injuries site and also contributes for Sky Sports – has claimed that Roofe’s latest injury setback is ‘very frustrating’, but not ‘alarming’.

He stated of the Jamaican’s woes: “I wouldn’t say it’s alarming, it’s more frustrating in terms of where the player wants to be.

“We know the associated risk of players returning from long-term injury, regardless of the work you are putting in on the training pitch.

“Nothing quite prepares the body for the rigours of competitive first-team football. That’s why you see players suffer minor setbacks and niggles because you need to adapt and integrate.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-5/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

“This latest setback puts a pause on him being involved but in the grand scheme of things, it’s just a minor issue.

“Unfortunately it’s one that he will be used to. You need to be in a really strong mindset to get you through that. You just focus on hitting those milestones in recovery and getting back in the team.

“It’s very frustrating, very disappointed but not totally unexpected. The break eases the pressure. Usually, everyone is asking when you are back and you push yourself.

“This allows the process to take its natural course, you can ease back and go through a thorough programme, so you arrive in the second half of the season in a really good place.”

The Verdict: Cannot catch a break

Roofe simply cannot catch a break, as he has been suffering from constant injury problems since the last campaign.

With Alfredo Morelos strongly linked with leaving Ibrox over the next few months, there is a place in the Rangers squad for an understudy to Antonio Colak, and Roofe would be confident that he can eventually surpass the new signing as the Light Blues’ main focal point.

He finished as the club’s third-highest scorer last season with 16 goals across all competitions, and when fit, he has shown that he can be a consistent threat in front of goal.

However, these constant injuries are hampering his chances of getting more game-time for the Light Blues.

Wolves can find a season saviour in Pereira

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ season shows no signs of improving under interim manager Steve Davis as the Old Gold find themselves in 19th place in the Premier League standings but Fosun could find a solution in Vitor Pereira.

Despite the club confirming that Davis would remain in charge until after the World Cup, links have continued to emerge for the Midlands club, with Portuguese boss Pereira the latest to be linked with a move to Molineux.

Band TV host Neto (via Sport Witness) has claimed that the 54-year-old, who is currently in charge of Corinthians, could leave Brazil when the season ends in November and that he could end up at either Wolves or Aston Villa.

Considering that Villa have now appointed Unai Emery, that opens the door for a move to Wolves, and he is a name that the Old Gold should seriously consider if they want to steer clear of relegation this season, as, unfortunately for Davis, his side only looks like heading in one direction.

Although the former Crewe Alexandra boss oversaw an important 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest, he has also seen his side comprehensively beaten by both Chelsea and Leicester City, with another defeat against Crystal Palace thrown into the mix.

Wolves’ goalscoring woes have barely improved under the Englishman and if the Old Gold want to remain in the Premier League, that is a key issue they must fix.

Indeed, it is clear that the Portuguese coach knows how to get his teams firing in attack, with Porto scoring 139 goals over the 52-year-old’s two league campaigns in charge at the Estadio do Dragao, as well as his Fenerbahce side sitting hitting the back of the net on 60 occasions in the 2015/16 Super Lig campaign and his Shanghai SIPG outfit bagging 77 league goals in 2018.

Furthermore, considering Pereira has won four titles in his managerial career – two with Porto and one each with Olympiacos and Shanghai SIPG – he could bring a winning mentality with him to Molineux and restore some confidence in the squad.

Pereira has averaged above 1.5 points per game in all of his jobs aside from his time at 1860 Munich, which shows that he knows how to get the best out of squads, whereas Davis and Lage have both averaged just 0.75 points per game in the Premier League with Wolves this season.

Therefore, it is clear that the Portuguese boss would be a big upgrade on Davis and should Fosun wish to give their side the best chance of retaining their top-flight status come the end of the season, they should look to bring the 54-year-old manager to Molineux as soon as possible.

Manchester United: Griezmann a possible target

Manchester United could look to Antoine Griezmann to replace Cristiano Ronaldo if the 37-year-old leaves Old Trafford in January, sports journalist Pete O’Rourke has told GiveMeSport.

The lowdown

Ronaldo pushed to leave the club during the summer transfer window so that he could play Champions League football, but his wish was not granted. The Portuguese has not been Erik ten Hag’s favoured option in the centre-forward position so far this season, starting just one Premier League game.

Griezmann is technically on loan at Atletico Madrid from Barcelona, but Diego Simeone’s side are obliged him to sign him permanently if he plays 50% of the matches for which he is available.

The latest

O’Rourke says that United will move for another forward if Ronaldo departs midway through the season, believing that Griezmann’s track record will appeal to the Old Trafford hierarchy.

He told GiveMeSport: “We don’t know what’s going to happen with Ronaldo, is he going to stay or go in January? I think if something like that was to happen, then Ten Hag would like to bring another forward in.

“I’m sure Griezmann, with his CV and calibre, and potential availability, could be a live target in January.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-man-utd-updates-7/” title=”Latest Man Utd updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The verdict

Griezmann is at the centre of a remarkable situation right now, with Barcelona apparently concerned that Atletico are deliberately holding him back to avoid their £33.8m purchase obligation (via The Daily Mail).

Dermot Corrigan of The Athletic says that the situation is ‘becoming a joke’, and you wonder if the player will eventually lose patience and push for an exit route.

After all, the 31-year-old is a World Cup, Europa League and UEFA Super Cup winner who once top scored at the European Championships (Transfermarkt), so he may justifiably feel that he deserves better than to get sporadic game-time at Atletico.

France manager Didier Deschamps says that Griezmann’s ability to ‘think outside the box’ makes him ‘remarkable to watch’ and believes he’s ‘one of the greatest players of all time’.

With a career haul of 273 goals for club and country, United could do a lot worse than bringing in the Frenchman as Ronaldo’s successor.

Leeds still keen on attacking signing

Leeds United are still reportedly keen on signing PSV Eindhoven attacker Cody Gakpo this summer, but another club has now emerged in showing interest.

The Lowdown: Flying start for Leeds

Jesse Marsch’s side made a dream start to their Premier League season on Saturday afternoon, beating Wolves 2-1 at Elland Road after coming from behind to claim three points.

While it was a positive day at the office for the Whites, they could probably still do with bringing in another attacking signing this summer following Raphinha’s exit to Barcelona, duly depriving them of their top scorer from 2021/22.

Gakpo is one player who has been linked with Leeds in recent days, and it could be a saga which rumbles on throughout the remainder of the transfer window.

The Latest: Gakpo still ‘coveted’

According to Foot Mercato, the Dutchman is ‘coveted’ by the Whites, but Nottingham Forest have also now emerged as potential suitors.

A move to the Premier League certainly appears to be on the cards for the 23-year-old, with Arsenal also highlighted in the report as possible destination for Gakpo.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-48/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Verdict: Really exciting option

Gakpo has enjoyed a superb spell at PSV, scoring 43 goals and chipping in with 35 assists in 136 appearances in total, also being hailed by Theo Janssen as a player who ‘has everything’.

The 23-year-old could give Leeds’ attack an added dimension, combining speed, strength and finishing and giving Marsch another potent option in the final third.

A lack of firepower was one of the reasons that the Whites got dragged into a relegation fight last season, with Patrick Bamford’s injuries not helping, and Gakpo is someone who could alleviate that shortcoming in 2022/23 if he comes to Elland Road, also representing a long-term option given his youth.

Newcastle showing interest in Hudson-Odoi

Newcastle United are reportedly one of a number of clubs who are interested in signing Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi, with the Englishman facing an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge.

What’s the word?

As per 90min, the Magpies – as well as a raft of other Premier League clubs and Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund – are said to be ‘showing an interest’ in the forward this summer, with the 21-year-old seeking a loan exit from west London.

The report suggest that the three-cap gem is ‘wary’ that he may be restricted to a bit-part role under manager Thomas Tuchel this season, having not even made the bench in the recent win over Everton at Goodison Park.

The report also outlines how the Blues academy graduate could potentially be part of a deal involving Crystal Palace, which would see Eagles talisman Wilfried Zaha head in the other direction.

Game-changer

The end of the transfer window may be in sight, yet there is work still to be done for the northeast side, with manager Eddie Howe having been unable to add a new attacking recruit to his side so far this summer.

Securing the capture of Hudson-Odoi would, however, be a notable coup for the Tynesiders were they to win the fierce battle for his signature, with the £22.5m-rated man having proven just what a talent he is in recent seasons.

Dubbed a “game-changer” by Gabe Henderson, the £120k-per-week sensation has chipped in with 16 goals and 22 assists in 126 games in all competitions for his current side thus far, despite having been hampered by injury in that time.

The “electric” wideman – as described by Tom Barclay – registered nine goal contributions in 28 outings across all fronts last term, with only Callum Wilson (8) and Allan Saint-Maximin (10) having registered more goals and assists among the Newcastle squad during the 2021/22 campaign.

The London-born starlet could be the ideal figure to line up in attack alongside that devastating duo, with his sheer pace and quality in possession making him a real frightening prospect for any defence.

The 5 foot 10 speedster also notably ranks in the top 6% for progressive carries among those in his position across Europe’s top five leagues, showcasing his ability to drag his side up the pitch in a manner similar to that of Saint-Maximin – who ranks in the top 13% in the same metric.

Having two lethal threats on either flank in the Frenchman and Hudson-Odoi could well prove to be something of a game-changer for Howe and co, with no opposition likely to enjoy coming up against such dynamic and unpredictable talents.

Alan Myers drops Everton transfer claim

Everton’s transfer business so far this summer has done little to reassure fans that they won’t be embroiled in another relegation battle this season.

The Toffees have so far only signed one player, as James Tarkowski joined on a free transfer from Burnley, while star man Richarlison moved to Tottenham Hotspur in a £60m deal.

You would have hoped that the Merseyside outfit would have had replacement options ready after their windfall from the Brazilian, but there has been very little action since his exit, and it seems as if new signings are not imminent.

What’s the word?

According to Sky Sports journalist Alan Myers, Everton fans shouldn’t expect any new signings until the team returns from their pre-season tour in the United States.

In full, he said: “I wouldn’t expect any incomings until the team are back from the states, nothing imminent.”

Lampard’s side are currently in the USA and looked uninspiring in a 2-0 defeat against Arsenal recently.

They kick off the season against Chelsea in less than three weeks and supporters will be desperate to see some new additions before then, otherwise, it promises to be another long hard season for the Toffees.

Supporters will be gutted

The Toffees have so far been slow to find a replacement for Richarlison and risk starting the season with the injury-prone Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Salomon Rondon as their only natural options up front.

Meanwhile, fellow relegation candidates Leeds United, Fulham and Nottingham Forest have all arguably strengthened their squads with new signings ahead of the new season, which does not bode well for Lampard’s side.

Last summer saw Everton spend just £1.8m on transfer fees, as Demarai Gray joined from Bayer Leverkusen, and that led to a disastrous campaign.

[freshpress-quiz id=“638086″]

So to be in a similar position this summer, where they are yet to spend a penny on transfer fees, is baffling, and Albert Einstein perhaps put it best when he defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Everton have spent poorly under the ownership of Farhad Moshiri and although the fanbase will be keen to see those mistakes learnt from, spending more than £1.8m would certainly help the club in their bid for survival.

Leeds: Barcelona journalist shares Raphinha update

Leeds United star Raphinha will be a Barcelona player ‘in the coming days’, according to journalist Shay Lugassi.

The Lowdown: Marsch’s comments

The Whites took on Blackpool on Thursday evening in their first public pre-season fixture, winning 4-0.

Jesse Marsch revealed after the game that Raphinha had returned to training yesterday, and that it was still undecided if the 25-year-old would travel with the squad to Australia on Sunday.

The Brazilian appears to be holding out for a move to Barcelona, despite Leeds agreeing a fee with Chelsea, and it looks as if he may just get his wish.

The Latest: ‘Deal almost done’

According to Barca Times journalist Lugassi, Raphinha will be a Barcelona player ‘in the coming days’.

He shared the news on Twitter in the last 24 hours, revealing that a ‘deal is almost done’, with just ‘final details’ left and contracts already swapped.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-46/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Best for all involved

It looks as if Raphinha may well get his wish over the coming days, but it remains unclear as to what the finances involved in a potential transfer would be.

Leeds may not receive a £60m up-front fee like they could have gotten from Chelsea, but the plus side of that is he won’t be joining a Premier League rival.

Hopefully the fee will still be a respectable one, as that would then allow the club to invest in a new marquee striker, which appears to be their final piece of major business to accomplish ahead of the new season.

Leeds: Fabrizio Romano provides Crysencio Summerville update

Leeds United are working on a new deal for winger Crysencio Summerville, who is wanted by Nottingham Forest, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Lowdown: Summerville at Leeds

Summerville made the move to Elland Road from Dutch side Feyenoord back in 2020 following the club’s promotion to the Premier League.

The 20-year-old has featured mainly for the U23s, contributing to 21 goals in 27 games. He has made nine senior Whites appearances and featured on the bench regularly in the Premier League last season.

Described as ‘superb’ by Noel Whelan, the winger is now entering the final 12 months of his deal in Yorkshire, but it looks as if Leeds want to keep him at the club.

The Latest: Romano’s update

Romano took to Twitter on Thursday to provide an update on Summerville.

He revealed that the Dutchman is attracting interest from both Forest and AZ Alkmaar, however, he added that ‘Leeds are busy’ trying to extend his contract with ‘negotiations ongoing’.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-45/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Fingers crossed?

Summerville has proven at Thorp Arch with the U23s that he has bundles of attacking quality, so agreeing on a new contract would be a wise move.

Jesse Marsch may lose a star winger in Raphinha this summer, and although Summerville may not be viewed as a direct replacement at this moment in time, he could become a first-team regular over the coming years.

Securing a new contract and sending him out on loan for regular senior football could be the ideal scenario for Leeds chiefs, and it looks as if a decision will be made on the player’s future very soon.

Everton linked with Luka Milivojevic

Everton have recently been linked with a move for Crystal Palace midfielder Luka Milivojevic, with the Serbian reportedly set to leave the Eagles this summer.

What’s the word?

According to Spor Time journalist Gerasimos Manolidis, the 31-year-old won’t be returning to Olympiacos, where he featured before his move to south London in January 2017, and is likely to depart Selhurst Park before next season.

Manolidis suggests that both Everton and Fulham are taking an interest in the Palace captain, whose contract is set to expire at the end of the 2022/23 campaign, which suggests that the Eagles may look to cash in on him this summer.

Worse than Klaassen?

Milivojevic was once a key player in the Crystal Palace side and won plaudits for his ability from set pieces, while he managed an impressive 12 goals and two assists for the Eagles in their 2018/19 Premier League campaign.

However, his performances have dropped in recent years, as suggested by his declining WhoScored ratings, and the 2021/22 campaign saw him make just 15 top-flight appearances under Patrick Vieira, in which he failed to score or set up a goal and averaged a disappointing 6.44 rating from WhoScored.

With the Frenchman having overseen a youthful transformation at Selhurst Park this season, it seems unlikely that he will re-integrate Milivojevic into his starting 11 next term, and Everton could take advantage by bringing the midfielder to Goodison Park.

However, the Serbian’s displays last season and in 2020/21, when he averaged a 6.55 rating from WhoScored for his performances, suggest that he wouldn’t be an astute addition to Frank Lampard’s squad.

In fact, it could be argued that he would prove to be an even worse signing than Davy Klaassen, who struggled throughout his spell on Merseyside, having joined from Ajax in 2017 in a £23.6m deal.

[freshpress-quiz id=“638086″]

The Dutchman would go on to make just 16 first-team appearances for Everton, in which he contributed no goals and just one assist. However, he has since returned to Ajax and been a success, hitting nine goals for the Dutch giants on their way to the Eredivisie title this season.

The Toffees were able to recuperate around half of the fee that they paid for Klaassen, but given Milivojevic’s age, it seems as if he would have very little resale value if he does make the move to Merseyside.

Lampard already boasts more mobile midfield options such as Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure, with the Serbian’s lack of speed a real concern, as was pointed out by journalist Jack Collins in 2020.

He said: “He’s good at dead balls, but I think that Palace fans have started to turn on Luka Milivojevic a little bit, because he’s actually really slow, slows the game down a lot, commits quite a lot of fouls and basically, is only in for his dead-ball ability at times.”

Although Milivojevic boasts Premier League experience, his declining WhoScored ratings suggest that he looks to be well past his best; and if he does join Everton this summer, then it would not be a surprise if his signing proved to be even more of a disaster than the 2017 misadventure with Klaassen.
