After Liverpool romped to the Premier League title late last month, Arsenal boss Arteta has admitted his squad did not have the right "ingredients" to challenge Arne Slot's men. The Spaniard added that the Gunners had several players at risk of injury – with Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Kai Havertz, and more, all having spells on the sidelines – but "couldn't do anything about it."

He told reporters: "We knew from the beginning of the decision that our squad was super short and being super short we had some players that had a high probability of getting injured, because that’s what they had in the last few seasons. So we knew that and we cannot do anything about it. But that (availability) is a big thing to win trophies, you know, and Liverpool did that extremely well. They managed to maintain that consistency, that level of players, a system, a coach, a stadium that has created again, and consistently, an incredible atmosphere for them. So you need a lot of ingredients or you don't win the Premier League. That's the difficulty of it, and it's true that this season we never found that consistently because of the issues that we had."

Barcelona, AC Milan and even West Ham were believed to be among the many clubs showing interest at the time, but it was eventually Villa who moved forward to pursue a winter deal – signing the England international on a six-month loan.

Unai Emery’s side are covering up to 75 per cent of his £300,000-per-week salary, and this could rise to 90 per cent depending on performances, with Villa’s head coach thrilled by this transfer and calling it an exciting challenge for both parties.

“My challenge with him is a huge challenge. His challenge with us is exciting,” said Emery on Rashford’s arrival.

“I don’t want to know the reason he is leaving from Manchester but I am very happy keeping him here and I am very happy to try to exploit and help him recover his performances, individually and collectively.

“The conversation I had with him was a very normal conversation with a player and coach, speaking about football. I only want the best football from him. I think he has huge potential to exploit.”

The 27-year-old’s rumoured price tag for a permanent deal stands at around £40 million, but if Rashford is to convince NSWE to spend that amount of cash on top of his wages, he’ll need to perform – with this temporary stint almost acting as a trial period.

“I would like to thank Manchester United and Aston Villa for making this loan deal happen,” Rashford said.

“I was lucky to have a few clubs approach me, but Aston Villa was an easy decision – I really admire the way that Aston Villa have been playing this season, and the manager’s ambitions.

“I just want to play football and am excited to get started. I wish everyone at Manchester United all the best for the rest of the season.”

Speaking to ITV, via GOAL, United icon Keane shared what “surprises” him about Rashford joining Villa – namely that he didn’t pursue a fresh challenge abroad instead. The Irishman also questions whether a switch to the Midlands is really the recipe for Rashford to rediscover the peak of his form.

“If he’s lost the hunger at Man United – how will he get it at Aston Villa? Once you lose the hunger it’s hard to get it back,” said Keane.

“It’s sad but it’s been on the cards for the last year or two, especially since the new manager has come in. Clearly, they didn’t get on.

“The manager got no reaction from Marcus. The strange thing for me was I thought when Marcus was going to leave Man United he was going to go abroad and try something new. A new adventure for him, a different league, a different challenge. To go to Villa surprises me a little bit. Everton have now held talks with the agents of an “outstanding” midfielder they are looking at signing this month, according to a report.

Moyes eyeing midfielders after Spurs win

The Toffees’ 3-2 victory against Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend provided them with some much-needed breathing room in the Premier League relegation battle, now sitting four points clear of the bottom three with a game in hand.

However, the job is by no means close to being done yet, with just under half of the season left to play, and David Moyes remains interested in strengthening his squad by bringing in a new midfielder this month.

Moyes could look to raid Chelsea in the final week of the January transfer window, identifying both Carney Chukwuemeka and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall as potential midfield targets, having failed to establish themselves as regular starters at Stamford Bridge.

According to a report from Tutto Juve (via Sport Witness), Juventus’ Arthur Melo is also now emerging as a target for Everton, and they have taken their first step towards getting a deal done by making contact with his agents.

Melo was a first-team regular for Fiorentina last season, but he hasn’t been part of Thiago Motta’s plans this term, meaning he could move elsewhere this winter.

Real Betis are also interested in signing the midfielder, and at one point it looked like a deal was close, but negotiations came to a halt, which could give the Toffees an opportunity to swoop in.

Developments were expected quickly in the hours following the initial contact, but as yet it is unclear whether the Blues have made any progress towards getting a deal done.

Of course, there will be concerns about the former Liverpool man’s injury history, but he showed signs of being back to his best last season, averaging a 7.12 SofaScore match rating in the Serie A, among the highest in the squad.

Melo proved he deserves a second chance to prove himself in the Premier League with his performances last season, and given that he isn’t getting any game time at Juventus, it seems likely that Everton could stand a good chance of concluding a deal.

Manchester City are now reportedly ready to continue their hefty spending this January by adding another star to their ranks after one report claimed that the Blues are ready to meet his price tag in the final days of the transfer window.

Pep Guardiola’s side rarely spend big in January, but having suffered a historically bad run of form in the first half of the season that left their Premier League defence in tatters and Champions League hopes on a knife edge, they have been the biggest spenders in Europe so far this month.

They recruited defensive duo Abdukodir Khusanov (20) and Vitor Reis (19) for a combined £65m, and then spent almost that again on securing Bundesliga star Omar Marmoush from Frankfurt, eventually sealing a deal worth £63m to bring the free-scoring Egyptian to the Etihad Stadium.

Both Khusanov and Marmoush made their debuts for the club against Chelsea, to different degrees of success. While Marmoush looked lively and had a goal ruled out for offside, Khusanov handed Chelsea their first goal three minutes into his debut before being booked and subsequently removed before the hour mark.

The trio are expected to make an impact in the short term but have been signed with at least one eye on the future, with several of Manchester City’s stars now reaching the end of their storied careers and likely to depart in the coming months.

One has already done so, with Kyle Walker completing a move to AC Milan on an initial loan move after requesting to leave, leaving Man City short at the back. Now, they are looking to fix that with another massive signing.

Manchester City ready to match asking price for defender

That comes as a report from Italy claims that Manchester City are now ready to meet Juventus’ asking price to sign defender Andrea Cambiaso in the final days of the winter window.

The Blues are known to be keen admirers of the defender, who excels at inverting into central areas of the pitch and has been dubbed “an excellent playmaker from deep” as well as praised for his defensive qualities by Football Analyst Ben Mattinson.

Though he only signed a new 5-year-deal back in May, worth a reported £72,000 per week, the door has been opened to his potential departure from Turin this month.

It had previously been claimed that City were making progress to land the young Italian, and now reports from Italy believe a deal is edging ever closer. As per TuttoSport [via Sport Witness] ‘Pep Guardiola wants the versatile player at all costs’, while another Italian outlet claims that they are ready to pull the trigger on a deal.

Indeed, it is claimed that Juve want €70m (£60m) and City will bid around €60m plus the extra €10m in potential bonuses. Though no offer has yet been made, “there is confidence” that one will arrive as soon as Thursday, while for their part Juventus “will consider selling the player” for that fee as they battle persistent financial problems.

Should he sign for City, it would take their spending to almost £200m, by far and away the most in Europe this month, and could set them up for the next decade.

Aston Villa are enjoying a solid transfer window so far. Jadon Philogene has departed for Ipswich Town, raising £20m in the process.

Elsewhere, Diego Carlos looks set to leave Villa, making the move to Fenerbahçe for a fee in the region of €11m (£9.3m) after two and a half years in the Midlands.

In Ollie Watkins, Jhon Duran and Morgan Rogers, along with the supporting cast of Leon Bailey and Jacob Ramsey, Emery has plenty of attacking players who can make a difference in the final third.

That’s not to say Malen won’t offer much, as he has proved to be a fine player, especially in the Champions League, scoring twice and grabbing an assist for Borussia Dortmund this term.

Given the magnitude of talent at the manager’s disposal in an attacking sense, Malen’s arrival might go under the radar.

It was clear, however, that bringing in another defender was imperative this window. With Carlos all but gone and Pau Torres out for a couple of months, Emery is bordering on a defensive crisis. Bade, therefore, is the answer.

The former Forest defender’s talents were identified as far back as 2021 when he was finely praised by talent scout Jacek Kulig, who said: “He’s so good, mature and complete. He will be a world-class defender in the future. I have no doubt about that. Elite talent.”

When compared to his positional peers in La Liga this season, Bade currently ranks in the top 2% for tackles (2.17) and touches in the defensive third (44.38), the top 1% for successful take-ons (0.59) and in the top 5% for ball recoveries (4.79) per 90.

These are an impressive range of statistics, especially in one of the toughest leagues in Europe, suggesting Bade will be an excellent addition to the Villa squad should a deal get over the line.

Therefore, his signing will be of far greater importance to Emery than that of Malen’s, especially given the depth of talent across both the defensive and attacking areas of the first-team squad.

Chelsea fell further behind Liverpool in the race for the Premier League title on Sunday after they failed to secure all three points against Everton at Goodison Park.

The Blues are now four points behind the Reds, who have a game in hand, at the top of the table after they beat Tottenham Hotspur 6-3 later in the day.

Enzo Maresca’s men will rue missed chances in their draw with Everton on Sunday, as they failed to make the most of the chances that they created.

The Blues had 75% of the possession on Merseyside and created three ‘big chances’ in the game, but failed to find the back of the net with those opportunities.

Nicolas Jackson missed two of those big chances and has only scored one goal in his last three Premier League outings, missing three ‘big chances’ in that time.

Chelsea wanted to sign another natural centre-forward to come in and compete with the Senegal international in the summer transfer window, but they ultimately failed to bring in another senior option in that position before it slammed shut.

Chelsea's pursuit of Samu Omorodion

One player who was a target for the Blues in the summer was Atletico Madrid striker Samu Omorodion, now going by Samu Aghehowa, and they had agreed a deal for him in August.

Sky Sports reported that Chelsea agreed a £34.5m deal to sign the young attacker from the Spanish giants, before a contractual dispute caused the move to fall through.

The Premier League side did not opt to find a solution to that dispute and the Spain U21 international eventually completed a move to Portuguese giants Porto instead, and his form this season may make the Blues regret their decision.

Aghehowa, 20, has plundered an outstanding 16 goals in 20 appearances in all competitions for his new club, including two goals in one game against Manchester United in the Europa League.

This impressive form comes off the back of his return of eight goals in LaLiga on loan with Alaves from Atletico Madrid in the 2023/24 campaign, which shows that he has taken great strides in his development since making the move to Portugal.

As you can see in the table above, the Spanish marksman has been in prolific form in the Portuguese top-flight, with a staggering 11 goals from just 5.45 xG.

Jackson has missed as many ‘big chances’ in his last three appearances in the Premier League as Aghehowa has in the entire league season so far, which suggests that the Blues may have missed out on having a more clinical centre-forward option to select.

Whilst they have already squandered their chance to bring the former Atletico Madrid starlet to Stamford Bridge, Maresca could find his own version of Omorodion, now Aghehowa, by signing one of the club’s reported targets ahead of the January transfer window.

The outlet added that Ipswich Town marksman Liam Delap, who only joined the Tractor Boys from Manchester City for £20m in the summer, is high up on their list of potential recruits.

It stated that the club have held talks with the striker’s representatives to discuss a possible move to Stamford Bridge for the England U21 international, whose agents are thinking about his long-term future at the top level amid a relegation battle for his current side.

TEAMtalk revealed that Ipswich are keen to keep hold of their star striker in the January transfer window, but Delap is interested in a move to Chelsea and would be open to the switch if a fee is agreed between the two teams.

It also claimed that Manchester City have a buy-back clause, after selling him in the summer, but that they are unlikely to exercise it in January, which could give the Blues a clear run at the 21-year-old star.

Why Chelsea should sign Liam Delap

Maresca must, now, push the board to secure a deal for the £20m-rated centre-forward because Chelsea could finally land their own version of Aghehowa by swooping for the Englishman.

The Spanish marksman was not an outstanding goalscorer on loan at Alaves, scoring eight league goals, in LaLiga last season, prior to the club’s interest in him, but has now burst into life on the big stage with Porto.

Similarly, Delap is a young striker who has not produced Erling Haaland or Viktor Gyokeres-esque goalscoring levels, but he has shown plenty of promising signs in a struggling Ipswich side.

As you can see in the table above, the Ipswich sensation has been efficient with the chances that have come his way in the Premier League this term, scoring six times from just 4.41 xG in a team that is battling against relegation from the division.

Delap, who was described as a “battering ram” by Opta Analyst on X, also has the ability to create opportunities for himself, as shown in the clip below.

The 21-year-old’s form at youth level for Manchester City suggests that the potential is there for him to explode in a similar way to Aghehowa, if he joins a big team that can consistently put him in good positions to make things happen in the final third.

He scored a staggering 11 goals in 17 games at U18 level and 35 goals in 36 matches for their U21 side, combining for a return of 47 goals in 53 appearances overall.

Delap is now starting to realise some of that potential at first-team level, outperforming his xG in the Premier League, and Chelsea should look to offer him the chance to join a top side that can create chances for him on a consistent basis.
