Transfer insider expects Man United to sell Dean Henderson

Journalist Jacque Talbot thinks that Manchester United will sell Dean Henderson this summer and has tipped them to demand around £25m for him.

The Lowdown: Henderson looks set for summer exit

Man United made the bold decision last summer to loan out Henderson as Erik ten Hag placed his trust in David de Gea, who’s had a troubled time over the past few months at Old Trafford.

Henderson was certainly far from pleased by the way he was shipped out last summer as he conducted an explosive interview – and that won’t have done his chances of becoming a Man United player any good.

The England international is currently out injured and will find it difficult to usurp Champions League winner Keylor Navas as Nottingham Forest’s No 1 when he finally does return, which could mean his long-term future isn’t with Steve Cooper’s side, either.

The Latest: Man United will look to cash in

Talbot has insisted on his YouTube channel that Man United will be letting Henderson go this summer as he’s a sellable asset that could help raise valuable funds for their recruitment drive.

He said: “With Dean Henderson, I think Man United will sell him because they want to have a bit of a spree. So they’ll probably ask for – this is just out of thin air, I don’t know – £25m for him or something like that, maybe £30m with potential add-ons or something.”

The Verdict: A fresh start is needed for Henderson

Henderson’s loan spell at Forest has seen him keep six clean sheets in the Premier League and get back into England reckoning, having been on the bench for two UEFA Nations League games earlier in the 2022/23 campaign.

However, if Forest are willing to stick with Navas – who’s filled the void left by Henderson during his injury – the England shot-stopper will have to consider his options and decide what level of club he should be playing for.

It wasn’t too long ago that Antonio Conte was full of praise of Henderson, labelling him ‘incredible’, so he clearly has admirers and is indeed a top ‘keeper, but we feel he needs to find a new permanent home where he can start afresh and fall in love with a fanbase.

Leeds: Connor Douglas to replace Aaronson

Leeds United are crying out for an injection of hunger and youthful exuberance, despite Javi Gracia’s side having earned a vital point against Brighton and Hove Albion amidst their recent poor form.

Although it seemed like a positive point gained, with other results in the Premier League going against them the Whites have now dropped into the relegation zone and seemingly will face another tough, nervy run-in.

With Jesse Marsch’s January acquisitions yet to all embed, and crucially none of them having been Gracia’s signings, it remains to be seen what impact they might actually have on their bid for survival.

What the Spaniard can control is perhaps promoting youth players in his image, who might be able to disseminate his ideals due to their eagerness to learn.

With Brenden Aaronson continuing his abysmal form on Saturday, being handed a woeful 6.1 Sofascore rating, it is the American who arguably needs replacing more than anyone. Therefore, Connor Douglas stands out as the candidate to fulfil that role.

Who is Connor Douglas?

The 17-year-old attacking midfielder has enjoyed one of his most creative campaigns thus far for the U18s, even earning a call-up to the U21s where he would translate his blistering form.

Having scored five and assisted two in just 13 U18 Premier League games, the teenage sensation had proven himself a force to be reckoned with despite his youth. This was only supported when he bagged two goals in two Premier League 2 cameos, continuing his development without breaking stride.

This has all come from out wide too, so perhaps handing him starts in his favoured position could see these numbers only bolstered.

With the ability to maintain his form at higher levels, there is reason to believe he is worth a shot in the place of Aaronson, who has scored just once all season. The 22-year-old has now gone 11 league games without a goal contribution, with his 6.51 average Sofascore rating serving to supplement his misery.

It may be a risk to throw a youngster into the fold at this stage, but he can hardly do worse than what stands in his place. At the very least, he deserves a place on the bench where exposure could be seismic for his development.

Indeed, the bar has been set so low that Douglas can play with complete freedom, and should this experiment succeed it could prove to be a masterstroke that saves Leeds this term.

In his debut for the U21s, he was given a glowing review by journalist William Jackson, as he wrote in his player ratings: “His first appearance in the U21s side and he took the opportunity to shine. Looked a real threat and found two goals with impressive finishes.”

Should Gracia hand him a further opportunity to now shine for the first team, this exciting young gem could be the next starring product of Leeds’ illustrious academy.

Spurs keen to sign Harry Kane up to new deal

Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy is reluctant to sell Harry Kane over the summer and is keen to make the England captain the face of their project.

Who wants to sign Harry Kane?

The future of the 29-year-old does seem to be one of the major questions going into the summer transfer window with the striker only having one more year on his deal in north London.

There have been strong reports suggesting the likes of Manchester United are looking to make a strong push with Erik ten Hag keen on the player.

And it is also believed Kane will have options from further afield with the Bundesliga giants, Bayern Munich, still showing an interest in him.

However, speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano has insisted the Lilywhites are determined to keep Kane and make him the main man with a new manager expected to be in place for the summer:

"What I heard is that, at the moment, on Tottenham's side, no matter what happens with the coach situation, they want to extend the contract of Harry Kane.

"So they will offer him a new contract, they will insist to keep the player, they will insist to make Harry Kane the face of the project also, for the future of Tottenham, and so they have no intention at this moment to let him go."

What is left at Spurs for Kane?

There will certainly be some question marks surrounding the notion of Kane remaining at Spurs when he has been with the club for his entire career and is still yet to lift any silverware.

However, the market for the striker may not be as big as some may expect given the huge transfer fee which could be slapped on him if he is to push for an exit.

The soon-to-be 30-year-old England captain is unlikely to leave for Chelsea, Arsenal is naturally off the cards, Liverpool have already invested heavily in their attack and Manchester City have Erling Haaland.

Tottenham Hotspur's Harry Kane celebrates goal in their Premier League victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium against Steve Cooper's Nottingham Forest.

With this in mind, it only really leaves United as a feasible option.

Kane has previously spoken about not being keen on the idea of playing abroad so that could well eliminate the possibility of leaving for Germany – unless he has since changed his mind.

A move to Old Trafford could provide the striker with an increased chance of winning a trophy, but it is by no means a certainty.

And the Red Devils are also still well within the race to secure their spot in the top four with only two points separating them and Tottenham.

Kane is clearly settled at Spurs in terms of churning out consistent goal returns in the Premier League and at the age of 29, he may not be entirely convinced on the idea of moving to a different part of the country.

Gracia can terrorise Brighton by starting Leeds’ 5 ft 7 "rocket"

Leeds United will have to employ an airtight gameplan if they are to get anything from today’s Premier League clash with Brighton and Hove Albion.

The Seagulls travel to Elland Road in blistering form and find themselves firmly in contention for the European spots being just seven points off fourth with three games in hand.

Whichever way today’s result goes it will have huge ramifications at both ends of the table, as the Whites are seeking to remove themselves from another relegation battle with Javi Gracia at the helm.

Their most recent loss against Chelsea marked a failed opportunity to capitalise over a struggling outfit, and now they will have to be disciplined and deadly on the break to quell Roberto De Zerbi’s free-flowing outfit.

One such change the Spanish boss could make to bolster his chances is to recall Wilfried Gnonto, as despite his drop-off in form he remains a true maverick capable of the spectacular.

Is Wilfried Gnonto fit to play against Brighton?

Although he only made the bench in their loss to the Blues, Gracia revealed that the decision was tactical rather than a fitness concern. Therefore, it is expected that the Italian boasts a clean bill of health and will be fresh to start today.

This will be a big boost to supporters, who have enjoyed the electric exploits of the 19-year-old this season despite having only scored twice in 12 league games.

Aside from that, he remains a constant creative threat as outlined in his 1.2 key passes per 90. Not only this but the dynamism and trickery he brings make him a threat to any full-back, with former Hibernian striker Tam McManus dubbing him a “pocket rocket”.

The 5 foot 7 speedster was also lauded by journalist Tom Carnduff, who took to Twitter to outline just how deadly an asset he could be:

“Wilfried Gnonto looks an absolute star though. Had such a huge impact since arriving, especially when you consider it might not have happened at that stage of the window.”

Gnonto was also lauded for how he gave his opposite man “nightmares ” on that day too.

He could now revisit that form by once again troubling a visiting team, and with the backing of Elland Road, he is sure to return to his brilliant best. If there was ever a time to reignite his season, today is that day.

Leeds’ would love to have "best-ever" £8m maestro now

Leeds United boast a rich and illustrious history within the English game, however, that was somewhat marred by the financial troubles that saw them relegated in 2004 just as they seemed on top of the world.

David O'Leary, with the help of his predecessor George Graham, had crafted a squad laden with talent, culminating in that famous run to the Champions League semi-final before Valencia cut their dreams short.

Regardless, it remains one of the club's most remarkable feats since the turn of the century, with many of those featuring around that period revered for their immense talent.

Having enjoyed the exploits of Rio Ferdinand, Robbie Fowler, Mark Viduka and more, Olivier Dacourt is a name that could perhaps go under the radar given how he would leave the club acrimoniously after a short period.

However, it did not take long for this diminutive midfielder to announce himself as one of the silkiest players to grace Elland Road, with his exploits in the engine room proving imperative in their success around this period.

How good was Olivier Dacourt?

Signed for £8m in 2000, the Frenchman shattered the club's transfer record upon making his return to English football after a brief stint at Everton.

It was on Merseyside where he first showcased his combative yet classy assets, as he could beat a man, tackle and pick out a pass. These skills would have only been honed since then, as he quickly became an important figure in O'Leary's side.

Danny Mills even admitted that his teammate was tailor-made for the toughest games, in what seemed like a back-handed compliment fired at the midfielder: "We had Olivier Dacourt at Leeds. He was unbelievable in the Champions League, incredible against the top-six clubs.

"But when you played against the bottom six clubs, he went missing because he wasn't interested. He was a big-game player and some players are like that."

To have someone with that kind of enviable quality, but the mentality to tackle the very best in the game makes for a truly sensational player.

The Frenchman would certainly mark an upgrade on the current crop of midfielders at Elland Road, namely Marc Roca, who has underwhelmed since moving from Bayern Munich.

marc-roca-leeds-united-olivier-dacourt-javi-gracia-david-oleary

His 6.82 average rating perhaps covers up his recent poor form, of which his last two games have seen him handed a 6.4 rating or lower, via Sofascore.

The Spaniard is unspectacular across the board and thus does not excel in any particular role, averaging just a 77.6% pass accuracy whilst ranking in the bottom 16% for shot-creating actions and the top 41% for interceptions per 90 when compared to other midfielders in Europe, via FBref.

It is clear that the Whites need a classy presence to compliment the tough-tackling Tyler Adams, with Dacourt representing the perfect man for Javi Gracia's hypothetical spot.

Although he left amidst frustrations with Terry Venables, he will forever be remembered as a phenomenal player who lit up Yorkshire during his time there. Just imagine him in the current side; it's a mouth-watering thought.

Leeds could sign Pablo Hernandez 2.0

Leeds United's season has been a fast-paced and highly-stressful one, with transfer upheaval, relegation struggles and a managerial switch around which now has Javi Gracia as the proposed man to lead the Whites to safety.

A recent string of decent results has propelled his side up the Premier League table, such is the tightness between those bottom nine sides, and lying in 14th might give a false sense of security to a side that under the surface are only two points from the relegation zone themselves.

This daylight between them and West Ham United, plus the looming international break, has clearly spurred the staff at the Yorkshire club to switch focus slightly and look to the future; a future where they are hopefully still playing Premier League football.

Should they retain their status, it was noted yesterday by Il Romanista (via Sport Witness) that they are one of the clubs vying for Hakan Calhanoglu, who could leave this summer. This comes just weeks after another report suggested they were ready to bid €25m (£22m) for his services too.

With further financial troubles haunting Inter Milan once again, Gracia could look to capitalise by tying down this tricky Turkish maestro as the potential successor to former fan favourite Pablo Hernandez.

How good is Hakan Calhanoglu?

With electric quick feet and a technical prowess beyond anything currently at the club, what he lacks in pace he more than makes up for with his ability on the ball.

During his time across Europe, where he has plied his trade at various top clubs, the Turk has always earned a reputation as someone who could create from anywhere on the pitch. This helps to explain how he maintained 28 goals and 29 assists across 115 appearances for Bayer Leverkusen, and a further 32 goals and 48 assists for AC Milan too, via Transfermarkt.

Even at 29 years old, in the midst of his prime years, when compared to other midfielders across Europe, he ranks in the top 4% for shots, the top 2% for assists and, unsurprisingly, the top 1% for shot-creating actions per 90, via FBref.

It is therefore hardly a shock to see him branded capable of "magic" by journalist Deji Faremi, who saw his claim supported by a former manager of the magician. Fatih Terim noted: "We have many important players of absolute value. We can count on and trust, for example, Hakan Calhanoglu who in my opinion has now become a phenomenon, a Serie A champion."

pablo-hernandez-leeds-united-hakan-calhanoglu-transfer

This unbridled creativity does draw comparisons with Hernandez, who was a key component in Marcelo Bielsa's success in returning the club to the top flight.

In the season before their promotion, the Spaniard recorded 12 goals and 12 assists, before a further 18 goal contributions the campaign following would help them finally escape the Championship.

In the former term, he would average a whopping 7.52 average rating, as again his lack of speed was forgotten due to the immense quality he boasted. Hernandez is comfortably one of the most gifted players to grace Elland Road in recent memory, but Calhanoglu could just challenge that position should he hit form upon making this potential move.

Man United: Fergie’s £24m would be perfect for Ten Hag now

As Manchester United edged past nine-man Fulham in the FA Cup on Sunday evening, it may well have felt as if the Red Devils had had a man dismissed of their own at times, such was the lack of impact from January arrival, Wout Weghorst.

While that may be a harsh assessment of the performance of the typically hard-working Netherlands international – as he did win five total duels on the day – the 30-year-old was somewhat anonymous in attack, with the striker's most notable contribution seeing him produce a tame attempt on goal in the first-half that was akin to something of a 'back pass', as per Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst.

As GOAL's Peter McVitie noted, the on-loan Burnley colossus was simply 'no threat on the ball' and looked 'a bit slow' at times, having ultimately been forced to drop into a number ten berth due to his lack of influence as a central striker.

Those woes ensured that the 6 foot 6 powerhouse now has just two goals to his name in 18 appearances in all competitions for the Old Trafford outfit thus far – all of which have come from the start – with writer Dominic Booth noting in midweek that supporters have almost come to accept the forward's "mediocrity".

To his credit, Weghorst has been a reliable figure to call upon while fellow marksman Anthony Martial has repeatedly been shackled to the treatment table, although it is no doubt a sorry state of affairs that Erik ten Hag has been left with such a goal-shy asset as his main centre-forward option – particularly with the club having been competing on four fronts this season.

The former Ajax boss may well be hoping he could call upon a prominent figure of the club's past in the form of now-retired ace, Robin van Persie, with the latter man – unlike Weghorst – a Dutch striker who certainly had the golden touch in front of goal.

How good was Robin van Persie at Man United?

Although Van Persie's spell at the Theatre of Dreams was undoubtedly brief – as he was moved on by compatriot Louis van Gaal in 2015 after just three years at the club – it is hard to question the stunning impact that he made in Manchester in that time.

Having been snapped up by managerial legend Sir Alex Ferguson in a controversial, £24m deal from Premier League rivals Arsenal in the summer of 2012, the one-time Feyenoord ace picked up where had left off with the Gunners, having previously netted 30 league goals in his final season in north London.

Van-Persie-Man-United-Villa-Premier-League

A first goal for the club against the Cottagers in late August set the tone for the remarkable debut campaign that was to follow for the experienced striker under Ferguson, as he ultimately proved integral in powering United to their 20th – and most recent – league title.

Handed the club's number 20 shirt upon his arrival with the aim of helping to steer the club to that landmark, Van Persie would end the 2012/13 season with 26 top-flight goals, finishing as the division's top scorer in the process.

In a season that saw the 6-foot sensation memorably score a clinical hat-trick against Southampton and net a late, stoppage-time winner in the Manchester derby at the Etihad, the 102-cap ace is perhaps most fondly remembered for his exquisite, first-time volley against Aston Villa that helped to clinch the title.

Such ruthlessness is in stark contrast to the likes of Weghorst and Martial among the current United squad, with even Van Persie's following two seasons still seeing him rack up a respectable tally, as he netted 22 league goals combined.

Hailed as "unbelievable" by Ferguson, the Rotterdam native was a true, out-and-out goalscorer in the traditional sense, although had plenty of other facets to his game, with former teammate Rio Ferdinand having stated back in 2015:

"As a player he is so silky to watch, great touch, can hold the ball up & bring others into play, timings of his runs, skills & a dream of a left foot."

Van-Persie-Man-United-Ferguson-Premier-League

Those traits would no doubt be appealing to Ten Hag amid the woes of Weghorst, with the United boss likely to have been hoping his compatriot was still fit and firing when the 39-year-old was at Carrington on media duties earlier this month.

Ahead of a summer that could see the Red Devils turn to Harry Kane or Victor Osimhen in their quest to find a long-term, centre-forward solution, what Ten Hag wouldn't give to have a prime Van Persie leading the line.

TalkSPORT man backs Ellis Simms to impress for Everton

Former Everton man Kevin Campbell believes young striker Ellis Simms deserves a chance under Sean Dyche.

The Lowdown: Dyche must try everything for goals

Despite getting his Everton side to score at least two goals in a league game for just the third time this season last weekend, goals are an obvious concern for Dyche.

Everton are currently the joint-lowest scorers in the league, so it’s no surprise to see them once again engulfed in a battle against the drop into the Championship.

While they haven’t been helped by the inability of top striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin to stay fit for a prolonged run of games, they’ve left themselves horrendously short by not having sufficient backup.

The Latest: Simms could be the last option

After starting a natural winger in the form of Demarai Gray up front last weekend, Campbell has claimed on TalkSport that he believes Simms should be handed a chance to show his qualities.

He said: “The issue is, Calvert-Lewin really is the saviour, but he can’t keep himself fit. So by that time, how long do you wait? I think there’s a young lad there, Ellis Simms, who I think should get a chance as well because you have to try everything.

“Because, you know what, God forbid the worst thing happens and you don’t try him, you’re going to say to yourself open all the drawers and try everything. I think Ellis Simms might have a big part to play if Dominic Calvert-Lewin isn’t quite right.”

The Verdict: Huge pressure on young shoulders

Despite Neal Maupay’s woes in front of goal this season, with the Frenchman netting just once since joining in the summer, thrusting Simms into the spotlight of the Premier League could do more bad than good for the youngster and is arguably already a failed experiment from Dyche.

Simms was handed his first Premier League start by Dyche in the Merseyside derby earlier this season and it’s safe to say he was far from impressive, touching the ball just 19 times in his 60-minute appearance.

Therefore, instead of thinking about pinning their hopes on a young and unproven striker at this level, Everton should be focusing on getting their England international back fit for at least half of the remaining games this campaign.

Leeds trio could all leave this summer

Leeds United trio Robin Koch, Illan Meslier and Jack Harrison will all leave this summer if the Whites suffer relegation from the Premier League.

The Lowdown: Whites battling relegation

The Elland Road faithful are experiencing another taxing season in the top flight, having avoided a return to the Championship by the skin of their teeth last term.

Leeds find themselves hovering above the relegation zone as the business end of the campaign arrives and results need to improve hugely in order to pull away from the drop zone.

Going down would clearly be a disaster for Javi Gracia’s side and an exit update has now emerged.

The Latest: Trio planning to quit

According to Football Insider, Koch, Meslier and Harrison will all move on at the end of the season if Leeds are relegated, in order to remain at a higher level.

They are already ‘planning to quit’ and find a new club if Championship football comes the Whites’ way.

The Verdict: Disappointing

In truth, it would be no great surprise to see Koch, Meslier and Harrison all depart if Leeds are relegated, considering the trio are all arguably too good to be playing in the Championship.

[freshpress-quiz id=“418869″]

That being said, the hope is that they all knuckle down and ensure that doesn’t happen in the same way Raphinha did, with all three of them not having their best season individually.

Koch has picked up five yellow cards in the league and been part of a defence that has conceded comfortably more than a goal per game, and the same applies to Meslier in that respect.

Meanwhile, Harrison hasn’t offered anywhere near enough in an attacking sense, scoring just once in 23 league outings, so he needs to find another gear.

Newcastle scout Rangers central defender Leon King

Newcastle United have reportedly scouted Glasgow Rangers central defender Leon King ahead of a potential move this summer.

The Lowdown: King profiled

King is a 19-year-old centre-back who has played 19 senior games for Rangers so far this season, including six appearances in the UEFA Champions League.

He is rated highly in and around the club, having been hailed as an ‘absolutely top class‘ talent by renowned Gers bloggers Four Lads Had a Dream.

The Latest: Newcastle watch King

According to Football Insider, Newcastle have sent scouts to watch King play at Ibrox over the last few months, along with fellow Premier League rivals Manchester United and Leeds United.

He signed a new long-term deal with Rangers back in December, but is yet to play under new Michael Beale, suggesting that he has fallen down the pecking order.

The Verdict: Get it done

By signing King, the Magpies would be following a similar profile to the likes of Garang Kuol and Harrison Ashby in terms of young talents with plenty of potential.

The Scotsman showed promise in the Champions League earlier this campaign despite the Light Blues being knocked out, having been lauded by journalist Jonny McFarlane for his ‘incredible’ ability to ping the ball across the pitch from centre-back.

Nonetheless, King shares the same agent as Toon right-back Kieran Trippier, and so this could help push a deal through ahead of their rivals this summer.
