Chelsea: Graham Potter must ditch Malang Sarr

Malang Sarr looks unlikely to ever make it at Chelsea considering his lack of appearances over the past three years, and Graham Potter should look to get rid of the Frenchman this summer.

Should Chelsea get rid of Sarr?

Chelsea signed Sarr on a free transfer in 2020 after his contract at Nice expired, with the centre-back having accumulated 119 appearances during his time with the Ligue 1 side, which made him one of the most exciting young defensive talents in European football.

He was subsequently loaned out by the Blues and joined FC Porto for the 2020/21 campaign but struggled to make much of an impression in Portugal, making just 19 appearances in total, as he was forced to make eight appearances for the Dragões' B team.

Despite his lack of game time that season, he returned to Chelsea and became part of the first-team squad under Thomas Tuchel for the 2021/22 campaign, making 21 appearances, of which just eight came in the Premier League.

One of those came in the 4-2 home defeat by Arsenal, in which the French centre-back came in for some criticism from talkSPORT pundit Dean Saunders.

He said: “I’m going to be harsh but [Malang] Sarr was a shambles. Not good enough. For Sarr to come into the team when he’s not playing every week, he’s made so many mistakes."

After a difficult season in Chelsea colours, the Blues opted to send Sarr back to France in the summer, in the hope that he could rediscover his best form with Monaco.

Unfortunately, his performances there seem to have confirmed that the 24-year-old will never be good enough to be a regular in Graham Potter's side, as he has averaged a shocking 6.32 rating from WhoScored for his displays in Ligue 1 so far this term.

While Chelsea's decision to sign Sarr on a free transfer looked like something of a no-brainer given his impressive displays at a young age in France, his £135k-per-week wage looks like terrible business by the west London side.

While Monaco have the option to buy the centre-back in the summer, his disappointing displays and lack of starts in Ligue 1 suggest that they may well avoid that option, and he could soon find himself back to being surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge.

Sarr is contracted until 2025 but Potter must ensure that he leaves before then, as his time at Chelsea has been an entirely forgettable one.

Spurs fans don’t want Thomas Tuchel as manager

A number of Tottenham Hotspur fans have made it clear online that they are unhappy amid talk that Thomas Tuchel could become the club’s next manager.

What’s the latest on Thomas Tuchel and Spurs?

While Antonio Conte is still in charge, it feels as though the inevitable departure will happen sooner rather than later. Indeed, as per Sky Sports, a decision will be made on Wednesday night on whether or not he will see out the rest of the season.

Even if Daniel Levy opts against sacking the Italian for now, it seems almost guaranteed that Tottenham will be on the hunt for a new manager immediately as Conte’s contract expires in the summer anyway.

And after the current man’s incredible outburst following the recent draw with Southampton – where he brutally took aim at the “selfish” players and the club ownership – it’s likely he lost the majority of support from his own fanbase.

Damningly, The Guardian report that the squad also feel as though Conte is either “going or gone” already, so the only remaining question is, who will come in next?

Even before all this recent chaos, both Mauricio Pochettino and Tuchel were tipped as the two main candidates to be considered for the job, seeing as both are currently out of work.

However, if the German was to be appointed, it sounds as though plenty of supporters would have their reservations.

Much like Conte and Jose Mourinho before him, Tuchel enjoyed great success at Chelsea – winning the Champions League and the Club World Cup before being sacked at the start of this season.

Seeing as the path from West London to Spurs after that initial time with the Blues didn’t work out well for those past two managers, it’s easy to understand why fans might not be so keen to see history repeat itself.

With that in mind, here are some of the best reactions on Twitter…

Wolves could accept £50m Ruben Neves offer

Wolves are reportedly likely to accept a £50million offer for star midfielder Ruben Neves this summer, even if they avoid relegation from the Premier League.

The Lowdown: Neves likely to leave

At the end of last season, it really did feel as though the Portuguese had played his final game for Wanderers, not least because he waved goodbye to the supporters after the defeat away to Liverpool on the final day.

Despite constant reports suggesting Neves would depart Molineux – Barcelona looked like the front-runners to snap him up – he ended up remaining at Wolves beyond the summer transfer window.

The 26-year-old has again been one of his side’s standout players during the 2022/23 campaign, starting 27 of Wanderers’ 28 league matches and scoring five times in the competition.

Unfortunately, exit rumours have refused to go away, however, and it feels increasingly likely that Neves really will move on this time and enjoy a new challenge.

Now, a fresh update has emerged regarding the midfielder’s future – one that further suggests that he will be heading off elsewhere come the summer.

The Latest: Big-money to be accepted?

According to Football Insider, Fosun will likely give the green light to a £50million offer at the end of the campaign, regardless of whether or not Wolves have suffered relegation to the Championship.

Three of the four biggest clubs in world football – Barca, Liverpool and Manchester United – are mentioned as the potential suitors, with the world-renowned trio ‘keen to move’ for Neves.

Wolves are wary of losing him for free the following year, at which point his contract will have expired, meaning this summer is the more logical time to let him go.

The Verdict: Time to go

In an ideal world, Neves would sign a new long-term deal at Wolves, seeing out the rest of his career at Molineux and becoming an even greater legend than he already is.

Unfortunately, that is a pie-in-the-sky outlook, however, and the 38-cap Portugal international feels almost certain to leave this summer, following six years of great service.

The £50,000-a-week Neves will surely feel that a move to a bigger club is needed at this point in his career, allowing him to potentially test himself in the Champions League, not to mention sign a more lucrative contract.

It is impossible to begrudge him his move away, having made 245 appearances for Wolves and helped steer them back into the Premier League, and Wolves fans may even end up watching proudly from afar as he goes up another gear.

Arsenal must ditch Fabio Vieira

Arsenal’s Europa League defeat to Sporting CP in midweek ends their chances of winning their second major European trophy, yet the penalty shootout loss could potentially end up being a blessing in disguise.

Mikel Arteta is focused on securing the Gunners their first Premier League title since 2003/2004 and the extra continental matches may have been more of a hindrance than anything else in their bid to hold off Manchester City.

The Spaniard had to rotate his squad against the Portuguese side, giving players such as Takehiro Tomiyasu, Reiss Nelson and Fabio Vieira starts, although they didn’t exactly take their chance, with Vieira performing extremely poorly.

The 22-year-old was filling in for Martin Odegaard, who Arteta was clearly resting for the Premier League tie this weekend, yet he failed to take his opportunity.

Will Fabio Vieira start for Arsenal vs Crystal Palace?

The former Porto man didn’t do much against Sporting, in truth, averaging a woeful Sofascore rating of 5.9/10, comfortably the worst on the pitch and across his 101-minute spell on the pitch, he managed just 47 touches and 25 passes – figures nowhere near good enough for Arteta.

He also won just one duel, succeeded with zero dribble attempts and lost possession 13 times during the tie and he “didn’t cover himself in glory” according to popular Arsenal blog the Short Fuse.

He was also dubbed “utterly terrible” by one source during the match and his performance will give Arteta the licence to ditch him for the tie against Palace this afternoon.

This wasn’t a one-off by the 5 foot 7 midfielder either, as he has failed to demonstrate to the Emirates faithful during his short spell why the club splashed out £34m to sign him last summer.

He has made just two Premier League starts this term (17 appearances in total), scoring once and registering two assists, yet his average Sofascore rating of 6.74/10 ranks him as only the Gunners' 15th-best performer this season.

Of course, adapting to a new league and culture is extremely difficult, but the midfielder has struggled to take the limited opportunities presented to him by Arteta.

Starting in the last 16 of a major European competition was the ideal chance for him to showcase his abilities and lead the club through to the quarter-finals, however his abject performance will surely give the manager more questions than answers.

With the manager-less Eagles to come this afternoon, the former Porto man will likely return his usual watching brief.

Gianluca Scamacca could leave West Ham

West Ham summer signing Gianluca Scamacca could still leave the club this summer as reports from Italy share the latest on his future.

The Lowdown: Irons struggling…

Despite a summer of heavy spending, manager David Moyes has had a Premier League season to forget, with his side currently battling against relegation to The Championship.

The likes of Lucas Paqueta, a club-record acquisition, and Scamacca were brought to east London as promising signings to take West Ham to the next level.

Injuries and a lack of form has dampened the Hammers’ campaign after they were looking to build upon two-consecutive seasons of qualifying for Europe.

West Ham have won just once in their last five and are level on points with 18th-placed Bournemouth in the top flight standings, prompting Moyes and co to look over their shoulders.

As such, star midfielder Declan Rice has been widely tipped to leave this summer, and according to reports, he may not be the only one.

The Latest: Scamacca could leave West Ham…

The Italy international has been linked with a West Ham exit at various points this season with a report by newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness) sharing an update.

It is believed Scamacca’s ‘divorce’ from the club is ‘anything but improbable’ as struggling Serie A giants Juventus take a real interest.

La Gazzetta state ‘advantageous solutions could be opened up’ for Juve, ‘even on loan with the right/obligation to buy’.

Scamacca has apparently ‘reappeared on the black and white radar’ and Juve could offer him an escape route back to his homeland.

The Verdict: Let him go?

Moyes actually raved over the 24-year-old in his pre-match press conference ahead of tonight’s Europa Conference League second leg clash with AEK Larnaca.

The under-pressure Scotsman moved to quickly to praise Scamacca and offered an opinion on his recent form, stating:

“We want him back, he’s got something and we like him a lot. He’s a great boy and we really, really like him and we want him to do well.

“We want our Gianluca back to the one we had from August to November. The one we’ve got at the moment looks slightly different and we need him to get back to those levels.”

There is little doubting the forward has what it takes to succeed in England, especially going by his phenomenal goal return last season and imperious physicality.

The 6 foot 5 striker has been called a ‘powerhouse’ and a ‘bully’ by members of the media for his towering presence in the attacking areas, and given time, this could be a huge asset to West Ham.

Indeed, sticking with Scamacca and showing patience is the best thing to do right now.

Everton Have Branthwaite 2.0 In "Crucial" Teenager

Everton have a steady and rich flow of talent cascading from Finch Farm academy and could have their latest gem in homegrown centre-back Jack Tierney.

Notably, Anthony Gordon rose from the youth ranks and recently played a starring role in Everton's past several seasons, subject to a £45m transfer to Newcastle United last January.

Similarly, Ross Barkley was heralded for his early performances on Merseyside before completing a £15m transfer to Chelsea in 2018, while a certain former star named Wayne Rooney also commenced his illustrious career at Goodison Park.

The club might be floundering at present, two points and two places above the Premier League relegation zone after avoiding the drop in the closing weeks last season, but the assurance of further talent continually cropping up provides manager Sean Dyche with comfort that he can craft a team capable of flourishing higher up the table over the coming years.

Dyche is renowned for his defensive organisation and structured managerial approach, and as such he will be paying close attention to the exploits of Tierney, who will be pushing for an increase in his role at the club as he continues his development.

Who is Jack Tierney?

The 18-year-old Tierney has made 12 appearances for the U18 outfit this term to continue from an impressive preceding breakout year that saw him forge 16 outings, scoring one goal and wearing the captain's armband on two occasions.

According to Everton's official website, Tierney is a "commanding" defender and a lifelong Evertonian, hailing former Toffees captain Phil Jagielka as his footballing inspiration.

Such a 'commanding' approach will be one of the main attractions in the eyes of Dyche, who recently explained to the Coaches Voice the principles of his philosophy and provided insight into his man-management and prowess in tactical awareness from a defensive standpoint.

Effectively, there are scant few managers an aspiring centre-back would wish to kickstart their career under, and Tierney must absorb the fruits of his boss' labour to set himself in good stead to flourish among the seniors at Everton when the time comes.

Praised by reporter Jack Beesley for his "crucial" reading of the game earlier this season, Tierney has the tools for a successful Blues career, and as the cogs fall into place he could even surpass the expectations of Everton centre-back Jarrard Branthwaite, who is flourishing out on loan with PSV Eindhoven.

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite taking to the pitch for loan outfit PSV Eindhoven.

Signing for the Toffees in January 2020 for just £1m from Carlisle, the 20-year-old has made 13 appearances for his outfit, scoring one goal, before being loaned out to the Eredivisie last summer, where he has enjoyed a fruitful spell and forged 29 displays thus far, scoring four goals and registering an assist.

Hailed by former manager Carlo Ancelotti as a "really skilful defender with a lot of ability", Branthwaite will be pushing for a role in Dyche's set-up next season, and while he looks to be a genuine prospect, Tierney could surpass his potential by harnessing his 'commanding' leadership skills and becoming the centrepiece of the Everton project.

Klopp Must Soon Unleash £200k-p/w Liverpool Star

Liverpool's season of struggle has come to a welcomed pause due to the international break and Jurgen Klopp will be assessing which players he will have at his disposal when the side return to action in the Premier League against Manchester City next month.

The Reds are currently seven points shy of a Champions League qualifying spot ahead of their remaining 12 top-flight fixtures and with a trophy out of sight, the manager can now fully focus on closing the gap with Tottenham Hotspur in fourth.

The Merseyside club has tallied up the worst injury record in the entire Premier League this season so far which has been a huge contributor to the inconsistent selection and performances on the pitch, however, this could be about to change just in time.

Explosive winger Luis Diaz is expected to be available for the highly-anticipated Etihad meeting on April 1st alongside Joe Gomez and Thiago Alcantara, which is a massive boost for Klopp going into the business end of the season with top four looking hard to grasp at present.

Indeed, the squad suffered a huge blow when midfielder Stefan Bajcetic was ruled out of the season recently, however, the return of Thiago could be the saving grace Klopp desperately needs in the centre of the pitch.

Should Thiago start for Liverpool?

There is no doubt that Thiago has become a firm fan favourite since making the move from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2020 and has proven on many occasions exactly why he is a valuable asset to the Liverpool manager and team.

The 31-year-old midfielder – hailed "world-class" by former footballer George Chomakov – ranks in the top 9% of his positional peers across the top five European leagues for passes attempted, pass completion, progressive passes, tackles and interceptions, proving that he remains one of the best deep-lying players on the continent.

Over 14 Premier League appearances, Thiago has demonstrated his class through a pass completion rate of 86%, proving he is one of the best conductors in the squad.

A midfielder who oozes class on the ball, the Spaniard has successfully completed 83% of his dribble attempts, as well as averaging 1.2 key passes.

His German coach has never been short of praise for the player and his impact when fit, stating:

"I knew that when he arrived here, of course. He was unlucky with injuries and stuff like this at the start, but when he is fit he can give the game a real rhythm."

"He’s got an eye for that, he calms the game down in the right moments, he has a sensational overview of the game."

With that being said, in Liverpool's desperation to take control of games, the return of the £200k-per-week asset could not be more warmly welcomed by everyone.

Indeed, his presence on the pitch over the remaining fixtures could ensure that Klopp's charges end the season with a bang.

Everton’s £100k-p/w gem should be with England

Everton's season has been poor. Few people would debate that statement. But that is not to suggest that certain individuals have not performed well amidst the chaos and dogged relegation scrap.

For a period their defence was one of the best in the Premier League, and if not for a brutal mid-season collapse under Frank Lampard, they surely would have upheld this had Sean Dyche replaced him sooner.

The former Burnley boss did not waste time outlining the issues at the club, packing out the midfield to protect the back four which has resulted in a few vital wins to lift them out of the relegation zone.

In fact, since he joined the club the Toffees sit fourth in the form table, with only Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur above them.

His impact has been borderline revolutionary and has finally seen the best of James Tarkowski once again, although his levels have never really dropped despite the rest of his team's failures.

It was therefore a huge disappointment to see him omitted from Gareth Southgate's most recent England squad, although it hardly came as a surprise.

Should James Tarkowski be picked for England?

Back in 2017, Gareth Southgate proudly proclaimed: "I never pick on reputation — form has to come into it."

However, it is quite clear that since then he has developed certain favourites who maintain their place within his squad regardless of club form.

Until recently, Conor Coady was a mainstay within the England squad despite seldom actually playing. Whilst this was likely due to what he could offer within the dressing room, the continued selection of the likes of Eric Dier, Harry Maguire and Kalvin Phillips have all raised eyebrows.

The latter two in particular, given how neither plays regularly for their clubs.

Meanwhile, Tarkowski has played every minute of their albeit poor Premier League campaign thus far, yet without him their situation would look considerably more dismal. For comparison, the Manchester United defender has started just five times in the league for his club.

conor-coady-everton-james-tarkowski-england

The fact that the Toffees' stopper has also maintained a 7.19 rating throughout a tumultuous campaign too, the highest rating of any of his teammates to feature over five times, further exacerbates his importance. The 7.00 average rating of Maguire is also somewhat gratuitous given his far smaller sample size within a squad boasting far more quality. However, it still does not compare to the former.

It is no wonder that other pundits were pleading with Southgate to take the £100k-per-week titan to the World Cup, with Danny Mills even telling Match of the Day (via the Daily Star): "He's [Tarkowski] the best English centre-half we have that's playing regularly. He's been that good."

Whilst his level hasn't dropped from that period, it feels like his opportunity to feature for his national team dwindles with each passing break.

Evertonians are seldom surprised to see their top players snubbed, so Tarkowski will have to do something truly exceptional to add to the two caps earned back in 2018.

Tottenham: £30m-rated "game-changer" could start vs Everton

Tottenham Hotspur round off this weekend's Premier League action as they head to Merseyside to face Everton at Goodison Park.

It's the first game since Antonio Conte was handed his P45, with assistant manager Cristian Stellini remaining in the dugout as interim head coach, where he'll look to get Spurs back to winning ways alongside former player Ryan Mason.

After a "chaotic" week, the Italian caretaker has ten matches to get the Lilywhites into Europe, with their place inside the top four currently in jeopardy.

However, he'll have to manoeuvre his way around the ever-increasing list of injuries. In his pre-game press conference, Stellini revealed that Ivan Perisic would be available after a knock but he would be without Ben Davies and Ryan Sessegnon.

Emerson Royal is also absent, as is Richarlison, according to reports.

Will Arnaut Danjuma play against Everton?

In the absence of the Brazilian forward, the 48-year-old acting head coach may opt for Dejan Kulusevski to partner Heung-min Son and Harry Kane in the attack, though both the Swede (one goal and one assist in 2023) and the South Korean (three goals in last 19 appearances) have been inconsistent.

Perhaps he ought to turn to January signing Arnaut Danjuma, who has only been afforded 11 minutes from the bench since his return to England. However, this could be something of a grudge match for him, given the fact he was moments away from signing for the Toffees before he learned of the Lilywhites' interest.

Having done all of the social media in anticipation of an announcement, Danjuma completed a U-turn and signed for Spurs on loan for the remainder of the season, no doubt receiving plenty of stick from fans of the Merseyside outfit.

Tottenham Hotspur's Brandon Austin, Pape Matar Sarr, Davinson Sanchez and Arnaut Danjuma during training

Whilst we're yet to see any glimpses of real promise from the 26-year-old, it's hard to ignore his previous exploits for AFC Bournemouth, where he delivered 25 goal contributions across 52 appearances, via Transfermarkt.

His former Cherries boss Eddie Howe lauded the Dutch dynamo as a "game-changer" and that's what Stellini will be hoping he can bring tonight against an Everton side fighting for their lives at the wrong end of the table.

Under Sean Dyche, they have proven to be a tough team, having registered the scalp of league leaders Arsenal and more recently, earning a draw against Chelsea.

Danjuma possesses the ability to be a "nightmare for defenders" – in the eyes of pundit Kevin Phillips – so he could well embarrass Everton once again, with his pace and trickery difficult for any opposition, let alone someone like Seamus Coleman or Ben Godfrey, who is likely to be playing out of position.

Therefore, the £30m-rated attacker must be finally unleashed from the off at Goodison today. He could prove to be the difference-maker for a Spurs side that needs to get back on the right path.

Spurs: Kane ‘already looking’ for new club

Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane is ‘already looking’ for a new club beyond Spurs, according to a report.

The Lowdown: Kane future uncertain…

The 29-year-old is set to be one of the hottest topics discussed in north London this summer, especially with his contract set to expire in 2024.

Kane could leave Spurs on a Bosman deal next year as things stand with Premier League rivals Man United among the sides showing an interest in the player.

The England international, who become the Three Lions’ all time top goal scorer after his penalty against Italy on Thursday evening, is a key asset for Antonio Conte and whoever replaces him thereafter.

Reports have previously suggested that new deal talks have been opened with Kane, but according to a new report, the forward is now seriously considering his options.

The Latest: Kane ‘already looking’ for new club…

According to Spanish news outlet Libertad Digital, and journalist David Lacruz, Kane is ‘already looking for a destination’ beyond Tottenham.

The Lilywhites are apparently worrying about his ‘no-renewal’ as the attacker himself has now ‘gotten tired’ with the situation at Spurs.

Kane is believed to be ‘fed up’ with chairman Daniel Levy’s ‘broken promises’ and the ‘endless projects’ that have been failing.

He apparently doesn’t plan to extend his deal, coming after he nearly joined league champions Man City in the summer of 2021.

The Verdict: Blow for Spurs…

The homegrown ace has starred for Tottenham yet again, scoring a brilliant 21 goals and two assists in 28 league starts this campaign.

He also become Spurs’ all-time top scorer this season, surpassing the legendary Jimmy Greaves and proving to the world that he is one of England’s best ever centre-forwards.

Gareth Southgate, speaking after Kane also broke Wayne Rooney’s international goalscoring record this week, stated:

“He is a brilliant professional and to do it as quickly as he has with still a lot of his career to come is an incredible achievement.

“Huge credit to him. The players gave him a brilliant reception afterwards and I think that was a response to both the record and what he’s just had to recover from as well.”

Losing such a player would come as a major, major blow to Spurs and supporters will be hoping this report isn’t backed up by more mainstream media outlets.

Spurs return to action against Everton on April 3 and Kane will be set to showcase just how important he is yet again.
