Newcastle United will head to Merseyside for their Premier League clash with Everton at Goodison Park this evening and Eddie Howe will surely be going into the game with confidence.

The Magpies were back to winning ways at St James’ Park last weekend, delivering an incredible 6-0 thriller against top-four rivals Tottenham Hotspur and are now six points clear of the north Londoners.

The dream of Champions League football is looking more and more likely to become a reality for Newcastle and they could even further cement their spot by taking another three points away from home tonight.

Unfortunately, Howe has had some injury issues to contend with over the last few weeks, with key players like Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron sustaining issues.

Now, Fabian Schar could be set for a spell on the sidelines too, after sustaining a fresh hamstring concern in the latter stages of the Spurs game.

Howe took to his pre-match press conference to reveal an update on the centre-back’s condition yesterday, confirming that he remains a doubt: “Fab is one we have to check on and make a late call.”

As a result, it could be the perfect opportunity for the Newcastle boss to unleash club captain Jamaal Lascelles in place of Schar.

Will Lascelles start vs Everton?

There is no doubt that Everton have played their best football at Goodison Park this season with five of their six victories secured on home turf.

However, the Toffees have struggled to trouble their opponents in front of goal, with only two scored in their last four games, as well as having the lowest goal tally in the entire Premier League at present.

Under those circumstances, it would seem that losing Schar for the outing on Merseyside tonight may not be the worst outcome, as Lascelles should be able to use his experience and 6 foot 1 presence to handle Everton's goal-scoring talisman, Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The £40k-per-week titan – hailed as “heroic” by Howe – ranks in the top 9% of his positional peers across the top five European leagues for aerial duels won, blocks, clearances and touches, proving that he has some of the best physicality on offer when it comes to defensive play.

Not only that, the Newcastle boss has previously heaped praise on Lascelles for the importance of his leadership skills on and off the pitch, despite only making two Premier League starts this term so far:

“His attitude has been spot on. He’s obviously our captain and he’s led like a captain even in a difficult moment for him because he would want to play every game.

“I always think that’s a true test of a leader is in the difficult moments and I think Jamaal has been absolutely superb – he’s been positive in the changing room before the game, during training – I cannot speak highly enough of his reaction to that.”

With that being said, there is no doubt that Lascelles can comfortably work alongside Sven Botman to form a brick wall against Everton tonight and will deservedly earn some much-needed minutes in the starting XI.

Chelsea currently occupy 11th spot in the Premier League table following a season which has seen them win just ten matches in the top flight, scoring only 30 goals in the process, while they are on their fourth manager of the campaign.

It’s remarkable really considering just how much they have spent since last summer that the club find themselves in the position they’re in, facing the prospect of no European football next term as Todd Boehly continues his search for a new manager.

The Stamford Bridge outfit have splashed the cash in recent transfer windows, although this hasn’t exactly generated instant success on the field, with the likes of Enzo Fernandez and Wesley Fofana clearly needing to improve in order to take Chelsea back to the top four.

Under Thomas Tuchel, the Blues perhaps sold a few players slightly too hastily, with Fikayo Tomori and Timo Werner prime examples as the duo are shining for their respective sides, but the decision to sell Tammy Abraham to AS Roma in 2021 for £34m was arguably one of his worst, particularly with his current value soaring.

Although the goals dried up under Tuchel, he still managed to play a part in the team that won the Champions League in 2021, yet he was soon on the move to Serie A.

However, it appears that Chelsea have had a nightmare by selling the 25-year-old as he has netted 35 goals in 96 matches for the Italian side while Football Transfers now value the player at €60.5m (£53m), a sparkling rise on the £34m they sold him for just two years ago.

Tuchel made a blunder by selling him for a fee that low when he knew the striker was only going to get better. His recent success in Serie A proves that Abraham is a wonderful forward and should have been given more of a chance at the club.

Former Wolverhampton Wanderers loanee Francisco Trincao has spoken out on his recent upturn in form, after his hugely disappointing form in England last season.

What did Francisco Trincao say?

The 23-year-old expressed his happiness at this current time with perhaps a disguised swipe at Bruno Lage for how he was managed last term.

Speaking to Sport TV, related by O Jogo, he said:

“It’s like the manager has said about me, I need the consistency that I haven’t had in recent years. I feel good here, I’m happy. I hope to gain this consistency to be able to give more and be better.”

What went wrong for Trincao at Wolves?

The Portuguese joined Barcelona on a five-year deal in January 2020 and was handed his debut in October later that year.

Over a year later, the winger netted his first goal for the Catalan Giants in a 3-2 away win at Real Betis in the Spanish League. The following weekend, he then recorded two assists in a 5-1 thumping of Alaves, which included some delicious link-up play with Lionel Messi.

Due to the incredible competition at Barcelona and with an obvious talent that needed some more regular minutes to be developed and nurtured, the attacker joined Wolves on a season-long loan with an option to buy in the summer of 2021 and was tipped to become a real force within English football.

However, the playmaker endured the least productive campaign of his career and only registered four goals in 30 appearances in all contributions.

It was an incredibly disappointing return, heightened by the fact that he was a player who obviously had an oozing attacking flair but a damaging lack of end product – a painfully similar trend to what compatriot Goncalo Guedes experienced in the Midlands.

The fellow Portugal international has endured a comparatively dismal spell in England. Signed last summer, he has only scored twice and registered a solitary assist in 18 appearances. A better rate than Trincao, but still far from mindblowing.

Like the former Barca man, he is already elsewhere – on loan at Benfica.

After Trincao's disastrous spell, the £13m-rated man has also returned to his homeland, signing on loan for Sporting CP. Across 45 appearances for the Lions, he has contributed 15 goals and assists in a season where Ruben Amorin’s side has defeated Arsenal in the Europa League and Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League group stage.

In a recent league match, the former Braga man netted a hat-trick against Casa Pia and also recorded two key passes, two successful dribbles, and a monstrous 9.3 rating, as per Sofascore.

Trincao opting against signing permanently for Wolves emerged as the best option for parties, his short spell in England will be one he'll swiftly forget.

Liverpool target Matheus Nunes is “no longer a priority” for Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

What's the latest on Nunes to Liverpool?

The Portugal international first made the move to the Premier League in August 2022 when he put pen to paper at Molineux, but there was a chance that he could have instead been on his way to Merseyside. The Old Gold midfielder reportedly held talks with the Reds regarding a switch before signing for the Midlands outfit, and in a bid to fend off further interest, The Mirror have reported that they have removed the £44m release clause that was included in his terms.

Football Insider, however, claimed that Klopp is still pushing to sign the 24-year-old despite his price tag now increasing to £50m, though it would appear that they have since had a change of heart on their pursuit.

According to Romano (via CaughtOffside), Liverpool are chasing Bayern Munich’s Ryan Gravenberch and Nunes has therefore dropped down the pecking order. He said:

“Ryan Gravenberch is one of many names appreciated by Liverpool, not the only one. There are many opportunities, also Bayern still hope to be able to keep the player. Gravenberch will decide in May/June after speaking to Thomas Tuchel and the board.

"Matheus Nunes is one of the players monitored by Liverpool – Jurgen Klopp himself said in press conferences that they have almost 12 players in the list… but Nunes is no longer a priority target. Just one of the players followed by them.”

Are Liverpool right to cool their interest in Nunes?

Liverpool have recently ended their pursuit of Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham as a result of the financial package being too big, and even though Nunes was previously dubbed an “unbelievable” player by former professional Goncalo Santos, they are correct to back away from a second target.

The Rio de Janeiro native has scored just one goal and provided the same number of assists since the start of the season when he joined Wolves, as per Transfermarkt, so lacks any kind of attacking prowess or contribution in the final third, yet failing to prove himself in the top-flight despite making 25 starts this campaign.

Nunes also currently pockets £100k-per-week which he would likely want increased should he join a club the size of Liverpool, and they shouldn’t pay that much to a player who is not setting the world alight. They would instead be better off spending their budget on targets at the top of their game and one who would definitely make a positive difference to the team in the centre.

Arsenal were crushed 4-1 last time out by Manchester City, in a match that essentially ended their title charge as Pep Guardiola returned to the driving seat on course for the Premier League title.

Journalist Charles Watts had plenty to say throughout but drew one concluding remark with today's game against Chelsea on the horizon: "Trossard has to start against Chelsea. For all the talk around the impact of Saliba's injury and Holding's inclusion, Arsenal have not won a game since Trossard dropped out of the starting XI. They are a better team when he is on the pitch."

Especially given how profligate Jesus has been in recent weeks, particularly in their 3-3 draw with Southampton, where the Brazilian accumulated an expected goals tally of 1.14 without scoring.

Against Frank Lampard's struggling outfit, clinical finishing could be key to taking out their frustrations on their London rivals. Trossard's inclusion will almost ensure this, as his delivery has proven to often be imperative in Arsenal's success.

He deserves his chance, particularly when you consider the skill set the defender can offer the first team.

Although there may well be shades of Sol Campbell in his early career, having swapped Tottenham for the Gunners, it is the crop’s contemporary backline that he evokes memories of the most.

Like Ben White, Walters can feature at right-back or as a centre-back. Like Takehiro Tomiyasu, he can also feature at left-back, an area he played in during Arsenal’s pre-season.

Though, it’s arguably Saliba and Gabriel to who the budding prodigy is most comparable.

Indeed, the Arsenal academy gem’s attributes are remarkably similar, with this a player who can bring down the ball with ease, evade the press and maraud into opposition territory.

That was seen first-hand during the FA Youth Cup final last week. Although Jack Wilshere’s men were defeated 5-1, Walters “showed why he’s on the edge of the first team” in the words of Football.London’s Kaya Kaynak.

Comparatively, Walters wasn’t dribbled past at all during his three outings in the EFL Trophy this term, an indication that he can hold his own against senior professionals.

Possessing physical tools rarely seen at such a young age, and supreme composure, it’s easy to see why there are such high hopes for the former Spurs academy man. Indeed, he could just be Saliba 2.0, isn’t that an exciting thought?
