Everton transfer update emerges that "fans might not like"

Everton boss Sean Dyche will 'listen to offers' for two of his fringe players at Goodison Park as squad trimming becomes a priority for the Toffees between now and the end of the window, according to journalist Paul Brown.

What's the latest Everton transfer news involving Tom Cannon and Andre Gomes?

According to journalist Alan Nixon on Patreon, Republic of Ireland youth international Cannon could rejoin Preston North End on loan this campaign to bolster offensive options at Deepdale.

Nevertheless, Leeds United, Stoke City, Sunderland and Italian side Sampdoria are keeping an eye on the £8 million-rated 20-year-old as Everton look to trim their squad.

Last term, Cannon enjoyed a productive time of things on loan at Preston North End, registering eight goals and one assist from 21 appearances in all competitions, as per Transfermarkt.

The Daily Mail report that Portuguese midfielder Andre Gomes may also be set to move on from Everton this summer amid 'tentative' interest from Saudi Arabia in his services.

Everton are desperately looking for a new striker and Gomes could be sold to finance a swoop for a new frontman, four years after the 30-year-old arrived at the Toffees from Barcelona in a £22 million deal, as per Sky Sports.

Gomes was out on loan at Ligue 1 outfit Lille last season and featured 27 times in all competitions, notching three goals and two assists in the process.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist Brown has indicated that Everton will look to move the fringe duo elsewhere before the transfer window slams shut.

Brown stated: "Everton fans might not like to hear it but I do think that Everton are looking for a loan move for Cannon just to get him a quality year's worth of experience, probably in the Championship.

"It wouldn't surprise me if they managed to do that before the end of the window. Andre Gomes, they are willing to listen to offers for him and have been for some time. I wouldn't expect him to be around for much longer, either.

"I suspect that if they can't get him out permanently, he will also go on loan."

Who could Everton look to bring in this window?

Everton have already made four signings this window in the form of Ashley Young, Youssef Chermiti, Arnaut Danjuma and Jack Harrison, with more set to come before the close of play at Goodison Park, as per Transfermarkt.

According to FootballTransfers, Leeds United attacker Wilfried Gnonto is still pushing for a move to Goodison Park amid an expectation that the Whites will lower their asking price for the Italy international.

Leeds striker Wilfried Gnonto.

Southampton forward Che Adams and Leicester City striker Patson Daka have also been identified as two figures who could offer Everton some flexibility with regard to options in the final third, as per BBC Sport.

The Liverpool Echo claim that despite reports that Manchester United have submitted an enquiry concerning Everton midfielder Amadou Onana, there has been no such contact between either party over the Belgium international.

On the same token, the outlet have revealed that Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy is not an Everton target, contrary to earlier information surrounding the 33-year-old's future.

Starc's burst negates South Australia's century opening stand

After a dual offensive from fast bowler Trent Copeland and opener David Warner on day one, New South Wales batsmen procured themselves a lead of 150 in Adelaide, steered by Daniel Hughes’ 101-ball 57.That NSW added 89 runs to their overnight score of 5 for 153 with the lower-middle order batting around around Hughes; Peter Nevill and Mitchell Starc struck 23 and 20 each, before Chadd Sayers struck twice to wrap up the innings and finish with an innings haul of 4 for 82 from his 27 overs.South Australia got off to a solid start in their second innings, with Johnathon Dalton and Jake Weatherald hitting 64 and 71 each. The duo stitched together an opening stand of 137, blunting NSW’s bowlers for 54 overs, before Nathan Lyon got the breakthrough, Weatherald caught by Steven Smith. Starc subsequently imposed himself on the opposition with a double-strike, nipping out Dalton and Travis Head in the following over. Head, the captain, was sent back for a golden duck. Starc struck once more, bowling Jake Lehmann. The collapse, which amounted to the loss of four wickets for eight runs, meant South Australia finished at 4 for 145 at stumps.

Everton: £15k-p/w talent "knows" he’s going to be unleashed this season

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite will get a 'chance' under Sean Dyche this term and is unlikely to be sold amid rumours linking him with a move away from Goodison Park, according to journalist Paul Brown.

Will Jarrad Branthwaite leave Everton this summer?

According to The Daily Mail, Manchester United are keen to bring in left-sided Everton defender Branthwaite following his impressive spell on loan at PSV Eindhoven last term.

Scouts from the Red Devils are said to have been impressed by £15k-a-week earner Branthwaite's qualities and he is being targeted alongside Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo at Old Trafford.

On loan at Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven, Branthwaite made 37 appearances in all competitions last season, registering four goals and two assists, as per Transfermarkt.

FootballTransfers have revealed that Manchester United do have Branthwaite on a shortlist of potential defensive additions at Old Trafford; however, Everton will look to refuse any offers for the England Under-21 international.

Liverpool have also looked at Branthwaite in the past, though it isn't likely that Everton would entertain any proposals from an arch rival for one of their brightest homegrown talents.

His stature, rare status as a left-footed centre back and suitability to help fill quotas for European competition as an English player will undoubtedly appeal to elite-level clubs.

Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Brown indicated that he doesn't expect Everton to sell Branthwaite and instead reckons that he will get an opportunity to stake his claim for senior involvement at the Toffees moving forward.

Brown stated: "I don't see Branthwaite going to United. No, their defence, it's true, could be in flux this summer, there's a lot of talk of a couple of defenders being wanted by other people, but while I think they have an interesting brand point, I don't think he's high on their lists and I think he knows that he will get a chance at Everton this season."

What next for Everton?

Everton boss Dyche will be keen to add some additional bodies to his squad alongside Arnaut Danjuma and Ashley Young before his side take to the field to host Fulham next Saturday in their Premier League opener, as per ESPN.

According to iNews, Sporting Clube de Portugal striker Youssef Chermiti is in 'advanced' talks over a move to Goodison Park for a fee of £12.8 million that will include a considerable sell-on percentage for his current employers.

Southampton striker Che Adams.

Football Insider report that Everton are also keen on Southampton striker Che Adams this summer amid stiff competition from Bournemouth and Wolverhampton Wanderers to sign the Scotland international.

His teammate Kamaldeen Sulemana is also being explored as a potential option to add depth in the wide areas by the Toffees after they grew frustrated in their pursuit of Leeds United attacker Wilfried Gnonto, according to The Daily Mail.

In a separate article from Football Insider, it is believed that West Ham United veteran forward Michail Antonio is being tracked as another potential solution to help bolster Everton's options in the final third following news that his proposed move to Saudi Pro League side Al Ettifaq has fallen by the wayside.

Aston Villa: Emery Could Now Sign "Incredible" £130k-p/w Mings Upgrade

Aston Villa are reportedly eyeing a move for Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte, as Unai Emery and Monchi eye further blockbuster signings at Villa Park.

The duo have already broken the club’s record transfer fee through the £51.9m capture of Moussa Diaby, as well as spending big on Pau Torres earlier in the summer.

Despite making strong reinforcements, the Villans aren’t expected to stop their spends yet, with a marquee move for Laporte reportedly an option.

What’s the latest on Aymeric Laporte to Aston Villa?

As reported by the Mirror, City could cash in on the Spaniard following the signing of centre-back Josko Gvardiol.

Villa are mentioned as one of the clubs that have been ‘monitoring’ the movements of the 29-year-old, who is said in the report to be available for just £30m this summer.

Valued by FootballTransfers at €42.3m (£36m), Monchi could pull off another masterclass in snatching the £130k-per-week defender for a cut-price.

How good is Aymeric Laporte?

Having once been lauded as “incredible” and previously named the “best left central defender in the world” by his manager Pep Guardiola, it’s clear to see just what Villa could gain in signing Laporte.

It also showcases the level of talent on show at the Etihad, with the Spaniard unable to worm his way back into the Spaniard’s plans due to the continuous revelation of defensive quality in Manchester.

Last term, the France-born gem made just 12 appearances in the Premier League for City down to the success of Manuel Akanji, Nathan Ake and Ruben Dias in Guardiola’s favoured back three.

While the strengths of Laporte’s game are unquestionable, the dynamic centre-back is no longer considered part of the manager’s immediate plans, leaving him as a promising acquisition for another club to capture.

Villa underwent a revival of defensive stability following Emery’s arrival last season, with the central partnership of Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings proving to be a stellar combination when called upon.

tyrone-mings-aston-villa-unai-emery-ollie-watkins

As learned by the reported target of the claret and blue, football can be cruel and despite the finding of form last campaign, the duo could be axed from being the first-choice pairing, should another centre-back arrive.

With Torres already obtained, integrating Laporte would surely be bad news for Mings, who at 30-years-old could have his position compromised simply down to the baseline quality of the Spain international.

Despite being away from regular game time, when on the field, the 29-year-old remains one of the top-performing centre-backs in Europe for his progressive play.

As per FBref, the Spaniard ranked in the top 1% of centre-backs in Europe down to his average of 7.00 progressive passes per 90, showcasing just how much of a ball-playing whiz he is in the right system.

To put such numbers into perspective, Mings averaged 3.17 progressive passes per 90 in the Premier League last season, as well as recording 0.57 progressive carries to Laporte’s 2.72 per 90, highlighting the opposing outlet that the City man could offer.

While such ball-playing skills are becoming an increasingly noticeable – and desired – attribute in defenders, the 29-year-old titan also prevailed as a high-performing player with the usual defensive duties in comparison to the Englishman.

Averaging 1.00 tackles to Mings’ 0.43 per 90, as well as winning 2.18 aerials per 90 to his 1.74, the City marvel could back Emery into a difficult decision that could see him drop the 30-year-old should the dynamic centre-back arrive.

It would be a ruthless call but one that could help Villa transition onto another new level this season, given the evidence above.

Thiago Neves é do Leão!

Spurs’ 20 y/o Gem Was "Brilliant" vs AFCB

Tottenham Hotspur continued their confident start under Ange Postecoglou by dispatching a spirited Bournemouth on the south coast, and the Australian manager will be delighted by his side's collective fluidity and incisiveness.

How did Tottenham get on against Bournemouth?

While the Cherries started the affair with attacking intent, Spurs' control and newfound exuberance under the stewardship of Postecoglou shone through, and the away side emerged as deserved 2-0 victors.

James Maddison bundled in the opener after latching onto Pape Sarr's penetrating through-ball to score his first goal since joining the club from Leicester City in a £40m move this summer.

While Andoni Iraola's side threatened throughout, they could not bypass Guglielmo Vicario's goal, and it was new captain Son Heung-min and young full-back Destiny Udogie who combined to place the full-back into a dangerous position, where his cut-back allowed Dejan Kulusevski to drive home his first of the season.

How did Udogie play against Bournemouth?

Whilst Maddison dazzled with his performance, Udogie's start to life on English soil will have emboldened his manager, with the 20-year-old impressing as the Lilywhites gather steam.

The defender spent the 2022/23 campaign on loan at Udinese after signing for Spurs in an initial £15m deal the summer before.

As per Sofascore, Maddison recorded a joint match-best rating (alongside Son) of 8.0, complementing his maiden strike for the club with a 91% pass completion rate, making one key pass, winning seven of his 13 ground duels and succeeding with both of his attempted dribbles.

Hailed for his "creativity and zest" by Henry Winter, Maddison looks a real livewire in the Spurs centre and the fulcrum of their attacking efforts, but it is the collective enhancement of this Tottenham team – which last year languished to an eighth-placed finish – that will have the supporters so excited, and Udogie is emblematic of his improvement.

While Udogie was withdrawn at the 82-minute mark with a suspected injury, the 6 foot 2 dynamo was described as "brilliant" for his role in Tottenham's second strike by Charlie Eccleshare.

He would record an impressive match rating of 7.2, and while his assist caught the eye, the eight-cap Italy U21 star made three clearances and completed 89% of his passes, touching the ball 58 times.

Football.london's Rob Guest handed Udogie a match rating of 8/10, with the journalist saying: "Looked to attack at every opportunity and also played his part with some very good defending up against Antoine Semenyo.

"Showcased his best qualities for the second goal with a lovely run and link-up with Son Heung-min before picking out Dejan Kulusevski."

Despite his young age, Udogie boasts a wealth of skills that leave him tailor-made for Postecoglou's system, ranking among the top 17% of full-backs across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 15% for shot-creating actions, the top 19% for pass completion and the top 7% for progressive carries and successful take-ons per 90, as per FBref.

The 2023/24 campaign is still in its embryonic stages, but Udogie and Tottenham are tantalising a successful year, and against Bournemouth, he showcased why he must be a regular name on the teamsheet for his side.

Everton Could Sign Exciting Demarai Gray Replacement At Goodison

Everton could be preparing for a summer transfer market battle, as a new target emerges for Sean Dyche to challenge for.

The Blues have been linked with a host of talent already this window, with the side hoping to move away from their recent status of being a club on the fence between the Premier League and Championship.

Dyche led the Toffees to safety in the final game of the 2022/23 season, and with the opportunity there to strengthen this summer, the club could still see some new arrivals before the window shuts.

Who could Everton sign this summer?

It’s clear that the Blues are hoping to bolster their front line this window, with recent links to forward’s Wilfried Gnonto and Che Adams, who could both be handed an escape from the Championship.

Another attacking talent has emerged as a potential target for Everton, with Fabrizio Romano naming Porto starlet Goncalo Borges as a player being eyed on Merseyside last week.

The renowned journalist stated that both the Toffees and West Ham are showing interest in the 22-year-old, who could be on the move this summer away from his home nation.

How good is Goncalo Borges?

Representing Porto’s B team, the intricate wide player is deployable on both the left and right side, providing a significant threat in the final third for his energetic approach to play from the flank.

Identified for his pace and efforts in possession by talent scout Jacek Kulig, as well as being likened to Bayern Munich sensation Serge Gnabry for his style, the youngster was once named by Kulig as part of the “superb” U19 Porto side that won the UEFA Youth League.

It’s little surprise that the Lisbon-born talent has generated interest from the Premier League, with him netting five goals and registering two assists in 17 league appearances for the B team last term.

For Everton, the £1.7m -rated winger could add significant strength to Dyche’s side, in areas that are expected to change this summer, with the future of Demarai Gray a continuing doubt.

In July, journalist Rob Dorsett claimed that Fulham had reached an agreement to sign the Jamaican from Everton, adding that Dyche wouldn’t sanction the move until the Blues had recruited a sufficient replacement.

The 27-year-old has scored just nine goals in the Premier League since his arrival at Goodison Park in 2021 and is identified as one of the more replaceable figures in Dyche’s set-up due to his inconsistencies.

By signing Borges, therefore, the Englishman could finally replace the former Leicester City winger, with a young talent that has the potential to reach new heights in the English top-flight in what could be an exciting individual challenge.

Described by scouting site Total Football Analysis as having a ‘very direct approach to dribbling’, the 22-year-old could be the ideal replacement for Gray, who excels in similar attributes.

One area of Gray’s play that has been inconsistent at Goodison is his end product in the final third, which Dyche could find relief in through the reported target, who has been praised for his strengths in playing ‘excellent balls into the area’.

With West Ham also eyeing the talent, Everton should strike fast if they are to capture the youngster, who could be a strong signing for the Toffees.

Tottenham mooted to move for "lion" striker behind-scenes

Tottenham Hotspur could pull of a surprise deal to bring in one of the most prolific strikers that the Premier League has to offer; nevertheless, they may have to 'wait' to get their man, according to journalist Paul Brown.

How have Tottenham Hotspur fared in the transfer market?

Spurs have enjoyed a busy summer in the transfer market under Ange Postecoglou, with Alejo Veliz, Guglielmo Vicario, Micky van de Ven, Ashley Phillips and James Maddison all arriving on permanent deals in N17, as per Transfermarkt.

Of course, Tottenham have also been rocked by the departure of club icon Harry Kane to Bayern Munich for an initial £86 million and trying to identify his replacement will be a priority between now and the end of the window, as per BBC Sport.

Kane has given his reasoning behind choosing to going German giants Bayern Munich, stating in a recent interview: "I didn't want to get to the end of my career with regrets at not experiencing different leagues and cultures. I spent my whole career in England and the Premier League, so it may take a bit of adapting to get used to a new league."

According to Football Insider, Gent striker Gift Orban has emerged as a 'major target' to succeed Kane after Tottenham scouts were 'blown away' by his exploits in Belgium and 'huge potential' to develop into an elite striker.

Nottingham Forest striker Brennan Johnson is another alternative to Kane and is valued at around £50 million amid interest from several other Premier League clubs, as per The Daily Mail.

What has Paul Brown said about Ivan Toney?

Brentford striker Ivan Toney, who has been hailed as a "lion", has been earmarked as a target for Tottenham despite currently being banned from playing football due to breaching gambling rules, as per FootballTransfers.

Last term, the England international was in magnificent form for the Bees, registering 21 goals and five assists in 35 appearances across all competitions, as per Transfermarkt.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist Brown thinks that £46k-a-week earner Toney could be the 'perfect' solution to lead the line for Spurs moving forward.

Brown stated: “I can’t really see Brennan Johnson operating as a like-for-like replacement for Harry Kane, he’s not that sort of player and I suspect he would cost quite a lot of money as well.

“Ivan Toney is the more interesting one I hear a lot of people around the game say that they think he would perfect for Spurs. But would Brentford sell right now when he’s not available and won’t be around for a few months?

“It is possible they would consider a deal if the money is right I think, so that is one to watch. He obviously wouldn’t be able to play straightaway for Spurs, so they’d have to wait for him.”

Who else could Tottenham Hotspur target this summer?

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport via The Daily Express, Tottenham are keen on a shock move for Chelsea forward Romelu Lukaku, who would cost in the region of £38.7 million.

Lukaku also has interest in his services to consider from Serie A and the Saudi Pro League, though he reportedly isn't keen to move to the Gulf region.

In a separate report from La Gazzetta dello Sport via The Daily Mail, Arsenal striker Folarin Balogun is being weighed up by Tottenham; nevertheless, it seems extremely unlikely that the USA international would cross the north London divide.

Dusan Vlahovic may be available due to financial irregularities at Juventus and could become an individual Postecoglou chooses to pursue to replace Kane, as per Football Insider.

Man United actively "pursuing" exciting transfer for "underrated" star

Manchester United have already made a couple of high-profile additions this summer but it would appear there is still more business to be done. Transfer insider Dean Jones has spoken to GIVEMESPORT about the possibility of a new defender arriving at Old Trafford before the transfer window slams shut.

Is this the man to replace Harry Maguire?

A large amount of the chatter surrounding Manchester United is regarding the future of Harry Maguire.

He no longer wears the captain’s armband for United and the chances of his future lying away from Old Trafford has been building and building.

Complications have arisen with his reported move to West Ham United and Fabrizio Romano has since said that “West Ham want Kostas Mavropanos as new centre back after Harry Maguire deal collapsed.”

Even though Maguire may well be staying put now, Erik ten Hag is on the hunt for another body at the back. As per the MailOnline, Benjamin Pavard of Bayern Munich is the man in question and he himself is actually pushing for a move to Manchester.

Social media had their say on Pavard’s recent Instagram comment, pointing out that it may well be the Frenchman showing his intent. He commented on Raphael Varane’s post following the former Real Madrid man’s winning goal against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Romano has since tweeted that “Pavard [is] pushing with Bayern to make the deal happen” as a result.

Pavard, who has been called an "underrated" player, started at right-back in the German giant’s defeat to RB Leipzig in the DFL Supercup so it’s not as if he is struggling for game time in the Bavarian region. Headlines were made by two players in that game as Harry Kane made his Bayern debut whilst Spaniard Dani Olmo netted a hat-trick to win it for Leipzig.

Bayern will begin their title defence against Werder Bremen on Friday night and so it will be fascinating to see if Pavard features in Thomas Tuchel’s matchday plans.

What is Dean Jones' update?

Transfer insider Dean Jones reveals the plans for Manchester United to GIVEMESPORT regarding the potential signing of a defender.

"They still want Maguire to come to a conclusion and move on. I think we've reached the stage where a centre-back – or at least a defender – is a high priority.

"They want to get someone in that squad that replaces Maguire in there. I think that Pavard seems to be the one that makes most sense to them at this stage, and they are pursuing it."

What else is going on at Manchester United?

As well as the potential addition of a defender, Ten Hag is keen to bring on board another midfielder as reported by The Guardian.

Their new goalkeeper who signed from Inter Milan may not be the only Onana at the club if the Dutch manager gets his wish with United targeting Everton’s Amadou Onana.

The Belgian is into the last year of his contract at Goodison Park and he is of a quality that shouldn’t be embroiled in yet another relegation fight.

Onana is still just 21 and so would be a signing for the present as well as the future, adding to the purchase of Mason Mount who of course arrived from Chelsea earlier in this window.

Munro century headlines New Zealand's drubbing of WI

The opener became the first batsman to make three T20I hundreds and lifted New Zealand to their highest total as West Indies ended a horror tour with no wins

The Report by Varun Shetty03-Jan-2018
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Colin Munro became the first batsman to make three centuries in T20 internationals as he laid the foundation for New Zealand’s battering of West Indies by 119 runs in their final match of the tour at Mount Maunganui. The left-handed opener followed up his two fifties from the previous games with a 53-ball 104 as the hosts swept the series 3-0. West Indies failed to register a single win on a New Zealand tour for the first time since 1999-00.West Indies began much like they have begun all series – by feeding New Zealand everything they wanted. This time, Martin Guptill – who had made two single-digit scores previously – made use of the offerings too. He provided a scintillating start to the match, getting forward to the first ball and caressing an outswinger from Jerome Taylor wide of mid-off. He finished that over with an expert dab to beat short fine leg, and from there the carnage began.Colin Munro soaks in his third T20I hundred•Getty ImagesCarlos Brathwaite entrusted his spinners with keeping New Zealand quiet in the Powerplay. Samuel Badree’s first ball was an early indicator of what was to come. The legspinner dropped one short and down the leg side, and Munro duly wafted it over the long leg boundary. He crunched Taylor over midwicket with a slog, and when Ashley Nurse replaced him from the other end, he welcomed him with boundaries on either side of extra-cover. By this point, he was set up to better his career boundary rate – he hit a four or six approximately once every five balls before this match – for the rest of his innings.Guptill wasn’t as destructive, but he kept up the pace that allowed the openers to put up a century stand and get to their respective fifties inside ten overs. With the pitch offering nothing, West Indies’ bowling was reduced to offerings of straight balls at different paces. The spinners didn’t attempt to slow their pace down, and on the rare occasions that they tried it, Guptill had no problems hitting them through the line. The pain of conceding 51 runs in five overs of spin was momentarily alleviated when Brathwaite’s first over – the eighth of the innings – went for only seven runs. A West Indies bowler had finally avoided being hit for a boundary first ball. But all of 36-year-old debutant Rayad Emrit’s experience couldn’t help him or West Indies keep that up. He started with two overpitched balls on the pads; Munro flicked the first one over square leg to bring up fifty, and carted the next over midwicket. It was more of the same for the rest of the innings. Brathwaite’ only conceded one boundary off the bat in his next over, but went for 22 anyway. Length balls kept coming into Munro and he kept putting them away, evidenced by a wagon wheel that showed 55 runs in the midwicket and long-on regions.Guptill survived a caught-behind appeal in the 11th over, first on-field, and then on the review despite a mysterious disturbance on the audio check for the edge. It was against one of the few yorkers West Indies bowled, and it came from Nurse. Guptill edged Emrit to the keeper in the next over.New Zealand managed a half-century stand for the second wicket, as a modified middle order added quick runs around Munro’s march towards a record hundred. Each of them managed to hit a six – Kane Williamson’s loft over long-on was the most handsome one of the innings – as New Zealand made 243, their highest score in T20Is.West Indies’ propensity for poor starts seeped into their batting as well. Chadwick Walton chased Tim Southee’s outswinger with hard hands and chipped one to cover first ball of the innings. Five balls later, Southee lifted a short ball up at Chris Gayle, trapping the batsman with his gloves covering his throat and his eyes looking at the floor; the ball lobbed up for wicketkeeper Tom Phillips and both openers were gone for ducks.Rovman Powell was promoted to No. 4 to cover for Shai Hope, who had damaged a ligament in his right shoulder while diving in the field. The immediate effect of that change was Trent Boult going for 17 in a disastrous first over, in which he bowled back-to-back no-balls, followed by Southee conceding 19 to Andre Fletcher and Powell in his second over.Williamson did what Brathwaite had done earlier, and brought Anaru Kitchen on to bowl his left-arm spin. He got one to straighten off the pitch and take the top-edge as Powell swiped across the line. Shimron Hetmyer began brightly, hitting Mitchell Santner for six next over, but was run out minutes later, Fletcher’s ball-watching causing just enough indecision to leave them both hopping aimlessly outside their creases. The visitors threw in one final effort to come close to the target, hitting through the line like Munro and Guptill had as they monopolised the cover boundary to make 24 off the seven balls following Hetmyer’s wicket. The introduction of Ish Sodhi’s legspin put the brakes on that streak. He went for just two off his first over, and bowled Fletcher with a googly when he heaved at him to relieve the pressure created by a tight over from Santner at the other end. The end was swift from there on, with West Indies folding in the 17th over. Boult and Southee dipped into the West Indies wicket pool for one last time as New Zealand completed their biggest T20 win.
