Spurs could unleash Udogie in attacking role by signing “flamboyant” 6 ft ace

Tottenham Hotspur’s early season dominance has faded in recent weeks, with Ange Postecoglou’s team failing to win any of their last five matches, despite taking the lead in each tie.

Injuries and suspensions to key players kickstarted the poor run of form, which has seen Spurs reside in fifth place in the Premier League table.

The Lilywhites have had no issues in the final third this campaign, netting in every single game, yet they have been defensively vulnerable as of late, conceding 2.6 goals per game on average over the last five matches.

With Richarlison and Brennan Johnson failing to take their opportunity on the left of the attack and the previous issue in mind, the boss may turn towards 21-year-old Italian, Destiny Udogie, who has particularly impressed going forward since being drafted into the starting XI at left back.

Spurs transfer news – Samuel Iling-Junior

Postecoglou is keen to reinforce the left-side of his team, with Samuel Iling-Junior reportedly among the transfer targets, according to TuttoSport via SportsWitness.

Samuel Iling Junior in action for Juventus.

Juventus are open to offloading the England U21 international, as he has failed to nail down a spot in the starting XI and his contract expires in 2025.

The move could be completed in January and contact has already been made between the two clubs ahead of a possible transfer next month.

How Samuel Iling-Junior compares to Destiny Udogie

The potential acquisition of Iling-Junior may have a domino effect on the positioning of Spurs’ left-hand side. The Juventus wide player is a “flamboyant” – as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig – and versatile individual, who can comfortably operate all down the left, just like Udogie, and has often been deployed as a left wing-back for the Italian outfit.

The two players share similar strengths, including successful take-ons, progressive carries, and tackles, as shown in the table below.

From a positional standpoint, the current Spurs full-back has shown his ability to invert at times this season, whereas Iling-Junior thrives as a touchline player.

Therefore, the manager has the option to field Udogie as a left-winger, who can come inside in possession to breakdown opponents with his hypnotising dribbling, whilst still having a threat on the wing via the 6 foot Juventus youngster.

The ex-Udinese star has already showcased glimpses of how dangerous he can be in the final third, registering two assists and ranking in the 97th percentile for touches in the opponent’s box. He has also missed two big chances this season, which shows he can find himself in goal-scoring positions, but his current biggest downfall is his decision-making, but that should naturally improve with more experience.

Destiny Udogie

Tottenham would be an extremely difficult to side to breach if Udogie is opted for in a higher role, as they could form a solid 4-5-1 out of possession with the two wingers tucking in and aiding the full-back. This could have been useful over the last month, when Spurs have been far too easy to breach.

The number 38 who idolised legendary left back Marcelo when he was growing up, boasts impressive defensive stats, making 3.08 tackles per game, 1.54 interceptions, and 3.34 clearances, so despite showing signs of inexperience, his underlying statistics are amongst the best in the Premier League this season.

Any left-back who possesses attacking traits – such as Iling-Junior – and Udogie as a duo, would work superbly and provide balance at both ends of the field, in and out of possession.

The Spurs faithful have experienced a young left back be converted to a flying winger with incredible pace and carrying ability previously, and Udogie could follow in the footsteps of Gareth Bale.

Allrounders Shakib and Russell blow Sylhet Sixers away

David Warner’s 63 was in vain as Sylhet Sixers slumped further in the BPL 2018-19 points table

The Report by Saurabh Somani18-Jan-2019

Shakib Al Hasan asks for a review•Raton Gomes

How the game played outDavid Warner was upbeat when he won the toss, with Sixers having broken their sequence of defeat in the last game by batting first and defending successfully, but none of the batsmen showed the gumption to stick it out other than the captain. Battling an elbow injury that will cut short his BPL stay, Warner showed Sylhet what they would miss by battling to 63 off 43 to drag his team to a reasonable score. The Dynamites bowlers operated in a pack, managing to rein in Sixers whenever they threatened to get away.In the chase, Dynamites lost three wickets in the first five overs, but their big guns were unaffected, and it was they who piloted the chase. Shakib Al Hasan was dominant, and never let his side feel the pressure of the wickets, and then Andre Russell came and finishing things off in a blaze of sixes. Their unbroken 51 run-stand that took the team to victory in just 17 overs came off a mere 27 balls.Turning points- Warner had started cautiously, but then he saw the top order crumbling around him and decided to cut loose, and 31 runs came off the 15th and 16th overs, ensuring that Sylhet’s bowlers would have a total to bowl at- Dynamites faced a wobble at 39 for 3 in five overs, and Shakib, who had faced only three balls then, smashed Al-Amin Hossain for 14 runs in the last over of the Powerplay to negate the effect of the early strikes. He would later loot 25 runs off the 11th and 12th overs, bringing the equation to below a run a ball- Sixers needed a last-gasp miracle to turn things around but Russell sent Tasking Ahmed into orbit with two massive sixes in the 16th over, making the rest of the chase a mere formalityStar of the dayShakib took the two most important wickets when Dynamites bowled, first trapping Liton Das lbw for a 14-ball 27, and then coming back to snare Warner in the 19th over to deny Sixers a finishing kick or the positivity of good momentum heading into the innings break. He later helmed the chase expertly, timing and placing the ball to perfecting. He was impeccable in his judgement of which moment, and bowler, to choose to attack. The big missBig things were expected of Sandeep Lamichhane, especially since Sixers didn’t have a huge total to defend. However, he wasn’t able to tie down Shakib, which contributed largely to the Dynamites captain scoring freely against the other bowlers too and never letting the early wickets hamper the chase.Where the teams standDynamites have strengthened their position at the top of the table with five wins from six games and 10 points. Sixers remain second from bottom with four points from six games.

Unsettled Australia v settled India at start of World Cup year

Big Picture

Five days after the end of the Test series, where India celebrated their historic victory, the attention now shifts to the main one-day event of the year: Mission World Cup.These are two teams in vastly different positions at the start of the final run-in to the tournament in England. Australia, the defending champions, have won three of their last 24 games since the end of January 2017 and have a multitude of questions over their team. India, one of the favourites, are very close to knowing the players they’ll take. The contrast was stark in the build-up days with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli saying it’s unlikely they’ll be many changes from the squad on show in Australia – save for the rested Jasprit Bumrah to return and some competition for the reserve pace-bowling slots – while Australia captain Aaron Finch confirmed another much-changed XI with new players in new positions and incumbent players taking new roles.Just matching up the top three of both teams doesn’t feel like a contest: Finch, Alex Carey and Usman Khawaja against Rohit, Shikhar Dhawan and Kohli. If India’s top trio fire, as they did consistently last season, they will be very hard to stop for a new-look Australia bowling attack. While India can think of the World Cup from a position of strength, Australia are desperate for short-term success as well. They have yet to win a series in any format since the ball-tampering scandal. It would certainly go against the form guide if they ended that run here.

In the spotlight

Glenn Maxwell has prompted significant debate in the last few days with his continued Test omission and now he finds himself at No. 7 in the one-day side, tasked with bringing power to the latter stages of an innings. He appeared somewhat frustrated in that role against South Africa in Hobart earlier this season and it is unlikely to provide much chance to build an innings although Finch offered the prospect of him moving up the order in certain situations.Does MS Dhoni have a final hurrah in him at the World Cup? A great player, he has looked a shadow of his former self in recent times and hasn’t passed fifty in 14 ODI innings. That is partly due to batting behind a mighty top order, but even when given the chance to dictate a passage of play he hasn’t seemed to have the touch of old. One thing in his favour, however, is that his glovework remains sharp and he continues to produce some terrific work against the spinners.

Team news

All change, please. Australia have mixed things up in their one-day side again in the search for answers. Carey will open with Finch, with the recalled Khawaja and Peter Handscomb either side of Shaun Marsh. Peter Siddle will play his first ODI in more than eight years while Adam Zampa misses out. Mitchell Marsh was ruled out yesterday due to illness.Australia: 1 Aaron Finch (capt), 2 Alex Carey (wk), 3 Usman Khawaja, 4 Shaun Marsh, 5 Peter Handscomb, 6 Marcus Stoinis, 7 Glenn Maxwell, 8 Peter Siddle, 9 Jhye Richardson, 10 Nathan Lyon, 11 Jason BehrendorffHardik Pandya and KL Rahul are not available for selection, as the BCCI mulls their fate following their controversial comments on an Indian TV show. In an ideal world Pandya provides the balance that allows three seamers and two spinners, but in his absence Ravindra Jadeja is the all-round option while another seamer plays.India: 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Virat Kohli (capt), 4 Ambati Rayudu, 5 MS Dhoni (wk), 6 Kedar Jadhav, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 9 Kuldeep Yadav, 10 Khaleel Ahmed, 11 Mohammed Shami

Pitch and conditions

After the damp end to the Test match and more rain in recent days, the good news is that the forecast for a warm, sunny Saturday in Sydney. The SCG pitch has been flat this season which should bode well for a high-scoring contest although there appeared a decent covering of grass left on the surface.

Stats and Trivia

  • The teams have played 16 ODIs at the SCG with Australia winning 13 and India two. India won the most recent encounter in 2016, chasing down 331 with two balls. Australia had centuries from David Warner and Mitchell Marsh while India were steered home by Manish Panday’s 104 off 81 balls
  • Dhawan needs 65 runs for 5000 in ODIs; Jadeja needs 18 for 2000 runs; Bhuvneshwar needs one wicket for 100
  • Carey, who will open in ODIs for the first time, has a strike-rate opening the batting in List A cricket is 75.55 from 19 innings

Burnley lining up £15m January bid to sign powerful midfielder Pape Gueye

Burnley are lining up a move for an exciting player who could potentially be available in the January window after falling out of favour at his current club, according to a report.

Burnley's problems deepen in the Premier League…

On Saturday, Burnley were once again second-best in the Premier League as their problems continue to deepen at Turf Moor, as goals from Amadou Onana and Michael Keane ensured a comfortable 2-0 victory for visiting Everton in Lancashire.

Vincent Kompany's men have adopted an admirable approach this campaign as they continue to try and build from the back; however, they have won just one of their last 11 games in all competitions and sit six points adrift of Nottingham Forest, who continue to teeter above the relegation zone.

Burnley make contact to enquire about deal to sign "quality" defender

The Clarets are one of several clubs who are hoping to secure his services in January.

ByChloe Chadwick Dec 17, 2023

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Kompany bemoaned his side's inability to handle set pieces, saying:

"It’s two set plays. You can’t expect at this level to dominate every game, we’ve got to be realistic. The teams we’re facing have got players who can build up some momentum, that’s normal, but there’s not much I need to say about the overall defending or the attacking play, it’s more about both boxes today. We get done on two set plays."

"The moments we have, we have a few clear moments where we’re not able to finalise it and we get done in both boxes. That’s what you’re left to discuss."

Despite trying to emulate their style of football that brought success in the Championship last campaign, the Clarets continue to ship goals with regularity and have conceded more goals than everyone in the Premier League, bar Sheffield United, which will need to improve if they have designs on keeping hold of their league status.

Acquiring reinforcements in January could help Kompany's case at Turf Moor and he is now reportedly eyeing up a swoop for a new midfielder.

Burnley keen on Pape Gueye

According to reliable reporter Alan Nixon of The Sun, Burnley are lining up a £15m swoop for Marseille midfielder Pape Gueye, who club scouts have identified as a potential reinforcement who could help the Clarets in their fight against relegation.

The report claims that Gueye will be allowed to leave Marseille as Gennaro Gattuso doesn't fancy the 24-year-old and English clubs have been alerted to his potential availability in January, which could lead to a £15 million offer from Burnley in January.

Described as a powerfully built player in a separate piece by reporter John Hutchinson, Gueye has made just two appearances in the French top flight this term and looks to be firmly out of the picture at the Orange Velodrome (Gueye statistics – Transfermarkt).

Nevertheless, his explosivity and legs in midfield could make him a wise addition at Turf Moor, potentially giving Kompany another dimension in his engine room as he tries to keep Burnley in the Premier League.

Scotland bowlers smother Oman, storm to T20I Quad Series title

Adrian Neill, Mark Watt claim three wickets each to clinch tournament for Scotland

The Report by Peter Della Penna in Al Amerat17-Feb-2019

Mark Watt celebrates after another successful lbw appeal•Peter Della Penna

A wicket-maiden by Alasdair Evans to open the match was followed by a pair of three-fors to debutant seamer Adrian Neill and left-arm spinner Mark Watt as Scotland rolled Oman for 111 before chasing down the target with 27 balls to spare in a seven-wicket win.The speed of the victory allowed Scotland to claim the tournament title after leapfrogging Netherlands and Ireland on net run rate with all three teams level on two wins. After being sent in to bat, Oman experimented with their order by promoting Naseem Khushi to open in an effort to spark them following a sluggish start in their previous loss to the Netherlands. But the move backfired as Khushi failed to get the ball away off the first five deliveries from Evans before a charge down the pitch resulted in Evans dragging the length back and a pull being sent to Michael Leask at deep square leg.Wasim Ali was run out to end the second over after being caught ball-watching when Jatinder Singh pushed to mid-on for a run to make it 2 for 2. The 6’9″ Neill was given the ball for the first time in the fourth and struck on his second ball as Jatinder dragged a drive onto his stumps for 2, setting the stage for his Man of the Match performance. Neill claimed his second in his next over when Khurram Nawaz pulled him to George Munsey at deep square leg as Oman ended the Powerplay at 17 for 4.Watt put his stamp on the middle overs once more as Oman captain Ajay Lalcheta top edged to Neill at short fine leg in the 10th. Sufyan Mehmood walked too far across his stumps trying to flick through the leg side and was given leg before in the 14th. Watt rounded off his tournament-best seven wickets with his final ball of the day, beating Mohammad Nadeem on a sweep for his second lbw decision of the day to make it 76 for 7 after 16.Sandeep Goud brought some respectability to the Oman innings with a late flourish, carving Safyaan Sharif over backward point for six before scooping him over fine leg for four in the 19th, eventually ending on 31 not out off 19 balls. A mix-up with Bilal Khan in the final over when Goud wanted two to keep strike allowed Watt’s relay to account for Bilal and end the innings with three balls unused.Scotland had an uncharacteristically nervy start to the chase as Munsey and Kyle Coetzer were bowled by Nadeem on mistimed drives while Matthew Cross drove Bilal to short extra cover for 10 to make it 42 for 3 one ball into the eighth. Calum MacLeod got off the mark with an inside-edged four off Bilal that just missed the stumps and also survived a strong lbw appeal to the same bowler not long after.Vice-captain Richie Berrington extinguished any remaining hopes Oman had of pulling off an upset, clattering an unbeaten 47 off 29 balls as part of an unbroken 73-run partnership with MacLeod.A Berrington drive over extra cover for six off Wasim’s left-arm spin brought up the 50 stand and another straight six off Nadeem took Scotland within one shot of victory. After a single by MacLeod leveled the scores, Berrington drove Wasim for his sixth four through extra cover to deliver Scotland the title. The two sides will play a series of three 50-over matches at the same venue beginning on Tuesday.

Liverpool could make Trent even better with move for £35m "monster"

Liverpool were set to drop points for the first time at Anfield this season, but Trent Alexander-Arnold said no. The England international's last-gasp winner against Fulham on Sunday afternoon is symbolic of the lionhearted mentality under Jurgen Klopp's management.

Was this on show last season? Decidedly not. Liverpool struggled, toiled, languished and flopped. A fifth-placed Premier League finish was probably a fair reflection of a season marred by a malfunctioning engine room, the cuts too deep despite a late-season purple patch.

But Liverpool's heavy tinkering across the summer has resulted in a new-look midfield that has charged the club back into title conversations, with results such as the 4-3 win over Fulham evidence of a mindset fit for champions.

Unfortunately for the Reds, Arsenal mirrored the result at Kenilworth Road soon after, with Declan Rice popping up big time once again in a further token of his worth after a £105m summer arrival.

Manchester City also exists, and the pursuit of silver-laden success will require season-long fortitude, ingenuity and innovation to prevail and return to the pinnacle of the footballing pyramid.

Such ambitions have been made possible by the acquisitions of cultured Alexis Mac Allister, indefatigable Dominik Szoboszlai and exciting Ryan Gravenberch.

Such signings still have not answered the question surrounding Liverpool's long-term answer to the No. 6 position in the team, where Mac Allister has been playing since the summer.

Indeed, the time for a solution is now approaching, and to take a step in that direction, Liverpool must make a move for high-octane wideman Jeremie Frimpong.

Liverpool transfer news – Jeremie Frimpong

According to a recent report from 90min, Liverpool scouts were present to watch surprise German Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen draw 1-1 with Borussia Dortmund, with Frimpong the man at the centre of Klopp's attention.

Understood to have a £35m release clause in his contract which expires next summer, the Dutchman has been exceptional under Xabi Alonso's management this season, with his exploits down the right channel also attracting Arsenal's attention, with scouts decidedly impressed by what they saw.

Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso.

The 22-year-old is among the finest attacking wing-backs in the business and appears to offer a skill set that would complement Liverpool's system, though whether the Reds opt to prioritise such a signing over the midfield remains to be seen.

Jeremie Frimpong's style of play

Praised for his "breathtaking" speed by journalist and U23 scout Antonio Mango, Frimpong is one of the most distinctive and talented defenders in Europe, though it's perhaps incorrect to label him as a member of the backline.

As per FBref, he ranks among the top 1% of full-backs across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for touches in the attacking box and progressive carries, and the top 2% for successful take-ons and progressive passes received per 90, highlighting his placement up within the thick of the attacking action.

As a result of such marauding forays, Frimpong ranks among the top 2% for goals, the top 5% for assists and the top 9% for shot-creating actions per 90, leading United Stand presenter Beth Tucker to call him a “monster” in the final third.

Likened to some of the best offensive full-backs around, Frimpong has certainly been in fine fettle this season, posting six goals and seven assists from 18 appearances across all competitions, particularly eye-catching in the German top-flight.

As per Sofascore, the whiz has clinched nine direct contributions across 13 starts in the Bundesliga this season, notably also completing 80% of his passes, averaging 1.5 key passes and 3.5 ball recoveries per game and providing Alonso's high-flying side with a constant offensive outlet down the right.

Again, it must be stressed that the former Celtic starlet is firmly positioned in the attacking half, only making 0.9 tackles and 0.5 clearances per game and only winning 48% of his duels, so his addition to the fold would hardly eradicate the perpetual question marks over Liverpool's defensive solidity at right-back under Klopp's leadership.

Jeremie-Frimpong celebrates with Bayer Leverkusen.

By sealing a swoop for Frimpong, Liverpool would, of course, likely wave goodbye to Alexander-Arnold's permanent role at right-back, with all the pointers suggesting that the brilliant playmaker is destined for a future in the centre of the park.

New beginnings

Two years ago, Klopp scoffed at claims that Alexander-Arnold should move into midfield, saying, "Why make the best right-back in the world a midfielder?"

Now, with the 25-year-old increasingly venturing into the nucleus of Klopp's system of the pitch, it appears inevitable that he will eventually cement a spot in the middle, which would mean that signing someone of Frimpong's ilk makes a load of sense.

Alexander-Arnold is one of the finest creative players in the world, ranking among the top 1% of positional peers for assists and passes attempted, the top 25% for shot-creating actions and the top 3% for progressive passes per 90.

His innate ability to influence play and pick out the Mohamed Salah's and Luiz Diaz's of Liverpool's team is nothing short of extraordinary, though there is a growing sense that his defence-splitting passing would be better utilised as the central fulcrum.

On a per-game average in the league this term, the "genius" – as he has been dubbed by reporter Neil Jones – is creating 1.8 key passes, making 6.8 ball recoveries and 1.3 tackles, also completing 81% of his passes.

This hints at an ability to thrive in the centre, marrying his flair and style with an underrated industriousness; it's also worth noting, that were such changes to be enforced then Frimpong could find the ultimate force supplementing his darting runs.

Frimpong lingers in the final third and weaves into space at breakneck speed, with Alexander-Arnold in the centre, pulling the strings, then there is no telling how indomitable Liverpool's offensive verve could become, and Klopp must seriously consider signing the Bayer Leverkusen star and continuing the evolution of 'Liverpool 2.0'.

Reporter claims Man Utd may take "chance" on De Zerbi if Ten Hag is sacked

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is coming under increased pressure and journalist Dean Jones believes that the Red Devils could look to take a chance on another boss in the Premier League who would "appeal" at Old Trafford.

West Ham 2-0 Man United

On Saturday, Manchester United faltered away to West Ham United at the London Stadium, eventually losing 2-0 thanks to goals from Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus that extended their winless run to four games across all competitions.

Truth be told, the Red Devils had their fair share of possession and also created a couple of openings which they couldn't take. In the end, they were stung by a more clinical opponent and will now be left to lick their wounds ahead of Aston Villa's visit on Boxing Day.

Man Utd could sign a bigger talent than Mainoo in 2024

Manchester United could strengthen their midfield in the January transfer window.

ByMatt Dawson Dec 24, 2023

Analysing their defeat, Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer took aim at Manchester United's goalscoring record as they have netted the joint second-fewest times in the Premier League this campaign, bettering only Sheffield United over 18 games.

"It is embarrassing for Man Utd. They have scored 18 goals this season, only Sheffield United have scored fewer. Erik Ten Hag says 'we have to stick to the plan' but I haven't got a clue what that plan is. There is something drastically wrong."

Nevertheless, Ten Hag praised his players for certain aspects of their defensive work at the London Stadium, as he said:

"We defended very well for 90 minutes, that has to be always our standard like what we did there. You have to bring that to every game on the pitch."

Despite this, the Dutchman continues to come under pressure and journalist Jones has suggested that he could be replaced by a high-flying Premier League boss.

Man United could "take a chance" on Roberto De Zerbi

Previous reports last month claimed that Sir Jim Ratcliffe plans to sack Ten Hag and replace him with Brighton & Hove Albion boss Roberto De Zerbi, who has already masterminded two wins over the Dutchman in his time on the South Coast.

With Ratcliffe's incoming soon-to-be-announced, Jones has now signalled his belief that Manchester United could look to tempt the 44-year-old to Old Trafford should Ten Hag fall under the axe.

"It might be that if and when ten Hag does go, Manchester United take a chance on De Zerbi because he has shown what he can do in that Brighton set-up. As long as he can work within Manchester United's culture, fine. I think De Zerbi and Julen Lopetegui are the type of managers that will appeal to them.

"I'm not really buying that they'll go for somebody like Zinedine Zidane or anyone down that route because I think you're going to have to be willing to work within certain confinements, particularly in the early days as they start to get to grips with the changes that are going to be going on."
