Ajaz Patel follows the Herathian template to turn Galle Test

Much like the Sri Lanka seam bowler, the New Zealand spinner is a second-class citizen. If you’re not bowling with the seam upright and at at least 120kph, the place is practically designed to make you feel insecure.Early in the summer, pitches can be virtually indistinguishable from the outfield. In the stereotype of New Zealand, cows and sheep in neighbouring paddocks line up at edge of grounds and bleat longingly at the unused grazing opportunity that is the pitch block. A specialist spinner may sometimes not get a game at all, but if he does, he will be subjected to the gross indignity commonly known as the token “over before lunch”. This is the practice wherein a spinner is granted the final over of the session, to get it over with quickly, while all his teammates have switched off and begun thinking about food.Over the last 15 years, there has been an attempt to make New Zealand domestic pitches less seam-friendly, but this has only helped breed properly quick bowlers – Adam Milne, Lockie Ferguson, etc – instead of the military-medium operators New Zealand used to be infamous for. No Test spinner has made a serious attempt to pick up the retired Daniel Vettori’s slack. Partly as a result, New Zealand’s Test pitches are as lush as ever. If you’ve got Trent Boult, Tim Southee and Neil Wagner in your ranks – i.e. the greatest pace attack New Zealand have ever likely assembled – why prepare anything else?So imagine you’re Ajaz Patel. Yes, you have a good haul of domestic five-fors, but you’re also nursing a first-class bowling average over 31. Which, you know, are the kinds of numbers a Sri Lankan spinner (operating on domestic dustbowls) could put up if he bowled with his off-hand while balancing a kit bag on his head. You’re sent to Asia, given precious little time to acclimatise (the modern international schedule is unforgiving), and expected to essentially lead the attack. But, incredibly, for the second time in two Asian tours, Ajaz is doing it in remarkable style. His performance on debut in Abu Dhabi – the best Test of 2018 – was extraordinary. He had claimed 2 for 64 in the first innings, which is a middling return. But then when faced with defending a low score in the fourth innings, on a track that is taking turn (i.e. exactly the type of situation when the great spinners distinguish themselves from the mediocre ones), Ajaz took 5 for 59 – trapping Imam-ul-Haq in front, having Sarfaraz Ahmed caught behind, before spectacularly clinching victory with Pakistan needing only four to draw level by getting Azhar Ali lbw on 65. He would go on to play a strong role in New Zealand’s second win of that series as well, and finished with 13 wickets for the tour. And then he went home. He took no wickets for 60 on a greentop that turned into a road in Wellington. He bowled only 12 overs on another seaming deck in Christchurch. Then he went unrequired for the rest of the Test season. Now, in Galle, the pitch of a spinner’s dreams laid out before him, Ajaz has made big moves in a Test again. He was too quick through the air to begin with, by his own admission, but quickly discerned the appropriate pace, and soon was gaining wicked turn. Crucially, he wasn’t so enamoured of the rip he was getting off the surface, that he began to chase those magic pitch-on-leg-hit-top-of-off type balls. Instead, bowling those Herathian lengths, slipping in the occasional quicker one in Herathian fashion – though, of course, looking cooler than Herath, shades on, beard in a state of manly fullness – he set Sri Lanka’s dramatic middle-order nosedive in motion, and finished with 5 for 76 for the day.At stumps, he gave the most Herathian summary of his bowling he could possibly have given. “I think with surfaces that offer you something, you’ve got to stay patient and ask good questions of the batsman,” he said. “We know Sri Lankans are good players of spin, so you’ve got to respect that and make sure you put balls in good areas for long periods.”This should come as no surprise to anyone who watched him bowl today, but it turns out he has in fact intentionally taken cues from the great old waddler himself. “Bowling in the UAE there was a lot more bounce. Over here there’s not so much bounce, so you try and keep the stumps in play,” he said. “One of the greats, Rangana, who has got 100 [102] wickets in Galle – if you see the template that he set out when bowling on this wicket, he looked to attack the sticks and keep them in play the whole time, and allow the batters to make decisions around off stump. You’ve got to keep hanging in and play the long game.”Sri Lanka are not bowled out yet, so it is possible they will establish a first-innings lead. A slim one might not help them much, though – the highest successful fourth-innings chase at Galle remains 99. So long as New Zealand bat competently in the second innings, they will feel the more comfortable side. If they win a third successive Test in Asia in four attempts, they might reflect on the period either side of tea on day two as the definitive passage of play. Sri Lanka had a big lead in sight at 143 for 2. Then Ajaz, doing his Herath impression, took three wickets for ten runs. He changed the outlook of the game.

E no caso do Corinthians, muitos deles têm cobrado o técnico Vagner Mancini.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

The former Barcelona man has impressed over the last few years at Leipzig and even with the Spanish national team. However, the Spaniard might have played his last match at Leipzig Stadium with three top European sides interested in availing his services this summer.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

As per a report from French outlet Sports Zone, Leipzig have already received the first contact from Man City, Bayern and PSG for the Spanish star, who reportedly has a release clause of €60 million (£50.6m/$64.8m). The Bundesliga outfit are currently not ready to negotiate for the 26-year-old, and as such, any interested party will have to work with the pre-set release clause in Olmo's contract.

    DID YOU KNOW?

Man City had also shown interest in Olmo last winter but shifted their focus towards West Ham's Lucas Paqueta. However, with Paqueta set to undergo the Football Association’s investigation into alleged betting breaches, the Premier League champions are set to move away from the Brazilian.

If Olmo is going to have a move away in the near future, it likely won't be decided until the conclusion of the Euros. Olmo is set to be a major part of Luis de la Fuente's plans for the Spanish national team this summer in Germany. La Roja will kick off their tournament with a clash against Croatia on June 15.

Endrick, Kendry Paez and the NXGN teenage wonderkids to watch at Copa America 2024

Some seriously talented teenagers will be looking to set the tournament alight this summer in the United States

Copa America 2024 is now just a matter of days away, with fans and players from both South and North America buzzing with excitement ahead of what promises to be a thrilling tournament. As always, one of the biggest reasons for that enthusiasm is the prospect of young players emerging and making a name for themselves on the biggest stage.

Plenty of prodigies will be on show in the United States this summer, with some set to play key roles for teams that are expected to challenge for the title in the coming weeks. But who should you be watching out for and getting to know ahead of the big kick-off on June 20?

GOAL is here to give you the lowdown on the top teenage talents (born 2005 or later) to watch out for at this summer's Copa…

Getty ImagesKervin Andrade (Venezuela)

Venezuela head into Copa America with low expectations, but in Kervin Andrade they have a young playmaker who has the potential to become a star of the national team in years to come.

The 19-year-old, who plays his club soccer in Brazil for Fortaleza, has only made one appearance at international level with his debut coming back in March, but his presence in the Copa squad suggests coach Fernando Batista is keen to give the attacking midfielder some tournament experience.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesValentin Carboni (Argentina)

Argentina's squad for the Copa isn't markedly different from that which won the World Cup in 2022, but a couple of young talents have emerged in recent years and forced their way into the picture. One of those is Valentin Carboni, whose performances in Serie A have secured his place on La Albiceleste's roster.

An attacking midfielder who can play centrally or wide on the right, Carboni impressed on loan at Monza this past season having come through the ranks at Inter, and the Nerazzurri hope to raise up to €30 million (£25m/$32m) this summer by selling the teenager this summer.

Carboni only turned 19 in March, and he has already received the seal of approval from Lionel Messi, who told that the youngster has "a great present and future" after he caught the eye in the team's final warmup friendly against Guatemala.

Getty ImagesLuc de Fougerolles (Canada)

Canada are under new management for Copa America as Jesse Marsch takes charge of his first competitive fixtures, and the American could yet give youth a chance this summer after naming Luc de Fougerolles to his final roster.

At 18, London-born De Fougeroulles is a product of the Fulham academy, and made his first-team debut for the English club this past season in the Carabao Cup, while he was also named to the bench on multiple occasions in the Premier League.

A centerback with the versatility to fill in at either fullback position, De Fougerolles has only made one appearance for Canada thus far, but could become a key squad member this summer thanks to his ability to play multiple positions.

Getty ImagesEndrick (Brazil)

Aside from Messi, there may not be player with more eyes on them at this summer's Copa America than Endrick. The Brazil wonderkid entered the consciousness of soccer fans around 18 months ago when he agreed to join Real Madrid in a deal worth up to €72m (£61m/$77m). As he prepares to finally move to Santiago Bernabeu in the coming weeks, this will be the first opportunity for supporters outside of his homeland to get a prolonged look at "the new Pele."

The 17-year-old is slated to lead the line for the Selecao in the U.S. having already proven he can handle the step up to international soccer by scoring three goals in his last four appearances, including late winners against England and Mexico as well as an eye-catching strike against Spain.

Whether Endrick will be able to live up to the hype at what is his first tournament remains to be seen, but if the teenager is able to handle the pressure, then he could provide the X-factor that Brazil might need to get over the line.

Crystal Palace eyeing Deadline Day move for Mateta upgrade

Crystal Palace have spent much of the January transfer window on the periphery of the action – which, admittedly, has been few and far between – but have at least whirred into gear in this late stage.

Two days ago, the £8.5m signing of free-scoring right-back Daniel Munoz was announced, the Colombian joining from Genk, while the acquisition of Adam Wharton from Blackburn is all but concluded – a most exciting deal.

Midfielder Adam Wharton celebrating for Blackburn Rovers.

Roy Hodgson would still relish some added firepower and there is the chance of a former Premier League forward returning to London by the end of the day.

Palace eyeing last-gasp deal

According to the Mirror's Ryan Taylor, Palace are among the contenders – Everton and Luton Town are also named – to sign Ajax forward Chuba Akpom today, with sources revealing that a loan move is probable.

Crystal Palace could sign their best winger since Zaha

Roy Hodgson could look to sign a new attacker before the end of Thursday.

ByTom Lever Jan 31, 2024

Signing for the Dutch giants from Middlesbrough in a £12m deal last summer, Akpom has struggled to integrate into a lacklustre Ajax side this season but scored goals for fun on Teesside last term and might now wish to try his hand in the Premier League once again.

Chuba Akpom is a Mateta upgrade

Akpom, aged 28, has posted nine goals from 20 matches in the Netherlands but has only been handed three starting appearances in the Eredivisie and is subsequently being touted with a move away.

Not a bad return, eh? And given that he wreaked devastation on Championship defences last season, scoring 29 goals in 42 appearances for Boro, Palace might be wise in making a move to ease the striking burden from the likes of Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze.

Chuba Akpom.

Odsonne Edouard has not yet returned to prominence since his injury and Jean-Philippe Mateta has only clinched two goals from 19 outings in the English top-flight this term, hardly evoking confidence for the goal-shy Eagles.

The 26-year-old is only averaging 0.7 shots and 2.1 ball recoveries per game, as per Sofascore, which basically underlines the lack of energy and application, a combination of such as well as being nullified by defenders.

Akpom, by comparison, is averaging 1.7 shots per game in the Eredivisie despite his lack of match action and took 2.6 per fixture in the Championship last year.

As per FBref, the 6 foot striker ranks among the top 1% of positional peers across divisions similar to the Dutch Eredivisie for goals scored, the top 5% for pass completion and the top 7% for aerial duels won per 90, showcasing his effectiveness as a reliable centre-forward.

With creative geniuses such as Olise and Eze behind him, Akpom could be the perfect focal point to pump some fresh attacking impetus into Selhurst Park and ensure that Hodgson engineers a successful end to the campaign, surging up the table and doing so with style.

Mateta has been unable to find success in such circumstances and this is indicative of his inability to find space and break the net with placed shots, and Palace simply have to act to shore up their biggest issue.

O’Neil’s "no frills" £40k Wolves gem is now worth more than Cunha

Wolverhampton Wanderer’s manager, Gary O’Neil has a squad at his disposal which can beat any team in the Premier League on their day.

The Old Gold have proven this throughout 2023/24, defeating Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, and Chelsea (twice) as they chase a top half finish in the league.

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil before a Premier League game.

One key thing for O’Neil is how the squad seems to be clicking into gear at just the right time, and he can call upon players to perform across all areas of the team.

One of his most important assets is Max Kilman, as the defender has seen his market value increase rapidly.

How much Max Kilman cost Wolves

The centre-back actually arrived at Molineux for a transfer fee believed to be around £40k back in 2018 from Maidenhead United when he was aged just 21, and it has since proven to be a remarkable bargain.

He made his debut on the final day of the 2018/19 season and has since played 136 times for the Old Gold since joining.

Max Kilman

Kilman has emerged as one of O’Neil’s key players and his market value clearly reflects that, as he is worth more than teammate, Mathues Cunha.

Max Kilman’s market value at Wolves

Following Kilman’s impressive start to the season, Kilman was targeted by West Ham United during the January transfer window but, having signed a new contract until 2028 just last August, the defender was valued at £40m by the Old Gold.

No move ever materialised and Kilman will remain with Wolves until the end of the season at least, but O’Neil will be desperate to keep hold of him.

Indeed, across the whole squad in the top flight, Kilman currently ranks first for accurate passes per game (46.6), while ranking second for accurate long balls per game (3.9), second for interceptions per game (1.1) and for clearances per game (4.8), clearly showing that he has shown excellent defensive ability and is one of O’Neil’s finest players across a range of metrics.

He was lauded by former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher in 2023, who said about the defender:

"Max Kilman at the back for Wolves, an ever-present for Wolves all season. He’s no-frills at centre back, he just gets on with his job and very rarely makes mistakes, hence why he’s an automatic pick no matter who the manager is."

Even though Cunha has been in impressive form himself this term, scoring 11 goals and registering seven assists, his market value according to Football Transfers currently stands at €28.9m (£24.7m), which is lower than the £40m price tag that Wolves have placed on the Englishman.

Only seven teams have a better defensive record than the Old Gold in the Premier League this season and a lot of that is down to how solid Kilman has been among a back three which regularly features Craig Dawson and Toti Gomes.

If O’Neil can keep this group together, then the club could be on the cusp of something special, and it marks a change from their relegation worries that plagued the side throughout the vast majority of the 2022/23 campaign.

Matt Turner admits USMNT could have done 'some things' better during Copa America opener against Bolivia but 'implores people to not lose sight' of ultimate aim

Matt Turner admitted that the USMNT could have done "some things" better during their Copa America victory against Bolivia.

  • USA beat Bolivia 2-0
  • Pulisic and Balogun were on target
  • Turner believes there is room for improvement
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Christian Pulisic ignited the Dallas crowd with a stunning opener just three minutes into the match, setting the tone for a dominant performance, while Folarin Balogun added a second goal, securing a comfortable win for the U.S. team. Turner had little to do as their opponents ended with a meagre expected goal tally of 0.18 to USA's 2.40.

    WHAT TURNER SAID

Despite the convincing win and a dominant display, Turner acknowledged that the USMNT could have performed better in certain aspects of the game.

“Obviously, we wish we did some things better, but that’s what tournaments are about,” Turner told reporters. “You want to improve and get better throughout the tournament and keep growing as a team and a bond and a culture.

“So as much as we could have done things a little bit differently, at the end of the day we got a clean sheet, we scored two goals and we won. Going into this next match we know we might have to be a little bit better if we want to win that game as well.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Nonetheless, Turner was quick to emphasize the importance of taking victories as they come, especially in high-stakes tournaments like Copa America and urged the fans to "not lose sight" of the long-term goal of the group this summer.

“I think you take wins when you get wins, no matter the context," he said. "I think the result, especially in tournament play, is the end-all-be-all and I implore people to not lose sight of that. I think any time you can win a game in a worldwide competition and a big-time tournament, it’s good for the program, it’s good for us.”

The USMNT will be back in action against Panama on Thursday followed by a titanic clash against Luis Suarez's Uruguay next Monday.

Fabrizio Romano: Leeds looking at deadline day transfer for new centre-back

Leeds United are looking to sign a new centre-back on deadline day, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Leeds transfer rumours

The Whites are yet to make a signing for Daniel Farke’s side in the January transfer window, with attention being on moving players out and extending contracts to some highly-rated youngsters.

Daniel Farke.

Djed Spence’s season-long loan came to an end at the beginning of the year, whereas Luke Ayling left for Middlesbrough, Leo Hjelde for Sunderland and youngsters Darko Gyabi and Lewis Bate headed out on loan.

Archie Gray and Mateo Joseph have put pen to paper on new Elland Road contracts, with Wilfried Gnonto looking to follow suit. When it comes to new signings, defence appears to be the position Leeds need to strengthen, with Farke coy at his press conference on Wednesday in regards to any late business.

A number of defenders have been linked with moves to Yorkshire, including Tottenham Hotspur’s Ben Davies, West Ham’s Ben Johnson, Burnley’s Connor Roberts, Bournemouth’s Chris Mepham, Nottingham Forest’s Joe Worrall and Everton’s Ben Godfrey. Reports on deadline day have claimed that a move for full-back Roberts is close.

Leeds, and by extension owners the 49ers Enterprises, also appear to be working on a possible centre-back arrival as well, and Romano has shared what he knows about the situation.

Romano shares Leeds transfer update

Talking to GiveMeSport, transfer expert Romano said that the Whites are “looking” at a deadline day move for a centre-back, although the name is “unclear”.

“Of course, a centre-back is needed at Leeds. They are looking for an opportunity there. The name is still unclear, but Leeds are still trying and looking for a chance there.”

Leeds’ current centre-back options are Joe Rodon, Pascal Struijk, Liam Cooper and Charlie Cresswell. Summer signing Ethan Ampadu has also provided cover when needed, with Struijk and Cooper missing through injury recently and Cresswell out of the squad.

Cresswell is now back in the first-team fold after holding positive talks with Farke, so you could argue that the priority should be a new full-back instead of a centre-back.

Gray, primarily a midfielder, has made the right-back spot his own, and behind him, Leeds have Sam Byram and Jamie Shackleton. Meanwhile, on the left-hand side, the Whites have Junior Firpo and Byram, both of whom have had injury issues in the past.

Therefore, if Leeds can sign Roberts and a centre-back, Farke may well be delighted at the club's late business.

Sunderland must unleash their ‘sensational’ star alongside Roberts

Sunderland needed a second-half masterclass at the Stadium of Light to get the better of a valiant Plymouth Argyle, with the likes of Pierre Ekwah and Jack Clarke amongst the goals alongside substitute Jobe Bellingham.

Bellingham's fantastic strike off the post sealed the three points at 3-1, meaning the Black Cats would end the day in the Championship playoff spots.

Unsurprisingly, this game-clinching goal should see Michael Beale bring Bellingham back into the first-team fold for Sunderland's Valentine's Day away clash at Huddersfield Town.

Yet, there was another attacker in the Pilgrims' victory that shone equally as bright as Bellingham in Patrick Roberts who will hope to be on the teamsheet again versus the Terriers.

Patrick Roberts' game vs Plymouth in numbers

Roberts very much seized his opportunity to return to Beale's lineup for this one, starting his first game since Boxing Day owing to injury troubles.

The former Celtic star picked up only his second assist of the season in the eventually dominant win, rolling the ball across the floor for Pierre Ekwah to score a cleverly worked free-kick past the hapless Argyle shot-stopper.

Sunderland winger Patrick Roberts.

Only misplacing two passes all game warranted Roberts having a part to play in the equalising strike, further amassing three key passes in total as a creative force against a Plymouth defence that gradually grew more and more shaky as the hosts began to smell blood.

The 27-year-old winger represents a seasoned head in attack now, especially with Alex Pritchard departing for Birmingham City in the recently closed transfer window. Could Beale utilise this experience effectively between now and the end of the season, in the pursuit of promotion glory?

The Sunderland boss will, however, want to start Bellingham as well versus Huddersfield – adding in even more youthful exuberance to his already talented Black Cats XI, the 18-year-old sensation crucial in the promotion hopefuls getting over line against the visitors from Devon.

Jobe Bellingham's game vs Plymouth in numbers

Coming onto the pitch with only 25 minutes to leave his mark, it's fair to say the teenage talent did just that.

Replacing a hit-and-miss Abdoullah Ba – who has shown glimpses of his quality this season for Sunderland – Bellingham could be viewed as the more reliable attacking presence based on his impactful cameo at the weekend.

It would only take Bellingham two minutes in total to bag his "sensational" goal – as it was called by journalist Josh Bunting, taking on a number of Plymouth shirts who all stood back and then allowed the teenage talent to fire home.

Buoyed on clearly by Clarke also scoring a peach of a strike to give Sunderland the slim 2-1 lead on the day, Bellingham will be demanding he starts next game off the back of such an important involvement.

Only misplacing one of 15 passes too on the Stadium of Light turf, the exciting Black Cats number seven – who was once described as "integral" to Sunderland by Carlton Palmer – further did his bit by winning two ground duels away from just stylishly strutting his stuff.

Beale will be delighted with what he saw from his £6.5k-per-week teenage asset, tempted to start both Bellingham and Roberts against Huddersfield as a result.

With the Terriers leaking five at the weekend to high-flying Southampton, Sunderland will hope they can further expose the West Yorkshire side's frailties at the back on Wednesday night on the way to back-to-back wins.
