Stuart Poynter calls time on Ireland as he commits to Durham

Wicketkeeper puts county over country after change to ECB eligibility rules

Stuart Poynter has effectively called time on his international career with Ireland after committing to Durham in a new two-year deal.Poynter, Durham’s wicketkeeper and captain during this season’s Vitality Blast campaign, was forced to choose between club and country following a change to the ECB’s eligibility rules in September, in the wake of Ireland’s promotion to a Full Test Nation in 2017.Prior to that change, all Ireland players – along with other passport-holders from EU member countries – had been permitted to play as homegrown players in county cricket. Now they would have to register as overseas players, which Poynter has chosen not to do.Born in Hammersmith, London, Poynter has previously spoken out about his disappointment at the change of ruling, telling The Telegraph “it is a strange scenario when you are born British and have entitlement to work as a local in your own country.”Poynter’s decision was perhaps made easier by the disappointment he suffered earlier this year when he was dropped by Ireland following a run of poor form. He made 15 runs in four ODI innings in their series against Afghanistan in Dehradun and followed that with scores of 0 and 1 in the one-off Test that followed against the same opponents. He was omitted in favour of Gary Wilson for the subsequent tri-series against West Indies and Bangladesh on home soil, and Wilson – who left Derbyshire last year to play full time in Ireland’s domestic competition – then kept his place for their maiden Test against England at Lord’s in July.Richard Holdsworth, Performance Director at Cricket Ireland, thanked Poynter for his services to Irish cricket.”He has certainly been one of a cohort of players who has been part of the rapid climb of Irish cricket over the last decade from Associate Member to Full Member with Test match status, and I’m pleased for Stuart personally that he played in a Test match before he finished with international duties,” Holdsworth said in a statement issued by Cricket Ireland.”We wish Stuart and his family well with the next phase in their lives and hope that we see him regularly supporting the Irish team as we ourselves move into the next phase of our development.”Poynter’s decision comes a month after his Ireland team-mate, Paul Stirling, chose the alternative route, and ended his 10-year association with Middlesex to further his international aspirations.Stirling’s Middlesex team-mate, Tim Murtagh, is the other county-based Ireland player who has yet to confirm his decision. At the age of 38, Murtagh is nearing the end of his career either way, but remains a formidable performer, as shown by his haul of 5 for 13 on the first morning of the Lord’s Test, when England were bowled out for 85.With a highest score of 36 in 21 ODI appearances, Poynter never quite showed his best form in his Ireland career, although he did enjoy one notable moment in a T20 against the Netherlands in February, when he struck a last-ball six to seal a one-wicket win. However, at the age of 28, he could also have anticipated plenty more opportunities in international cricket, given that Wilson turns 34 in the new year, and that Ireland’s long-term keeper, Niall O’Brien, retired last year. The announcement of his two-year deal with Durham comes as the club offered the same extension to two other players: Liam Trevaskis, who has cemented his status as the club’s first-choice spinner across formats, and Jack Burnham, who served a year-long suspension for recreational drug use in 2018, but recorded four Championship half-centuries on his return to the team this summer.

10/10 Arsenal star has been even better than Havertz since Dubai trip

Whatever was in the water during Arsenal's trip to Dubai, we want some. No seriously, give it to us now.

The Gunners have been undoubtedly the best team in the country since the mini-winter break, perhaps even the best team in Europe. Their result against Porto in the Champions League on Tuesday will perhaps dictate that argument more efficiently.

However, until then, Mikel Arteta's men can bask in their quite ridiculous run of domestic form. They haven't dropped a single point in the Premier League throughout 2024 and even if their late 2-1 win over Brentford on Saturday was trickier than they've become accustomed to of late, it showed steel.

Prior to their victory over the Bees courtesy of a late Kai Havertz header, the north Londoners had scored 31 goals in six unrelenting games of football. They were bagging goals galore until fellow London side Brentford visited the Emirates this weekend.

Though, despite their troubles this time around, they still moved to the top of the table, at least until Liverpool face Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.

It's a match that could have been oh-so different, however. With David Raya ineligible to face his parent club in stepped Aaron Ramsdale. Towards the end of a first half in which Arsenal had dominated, Declan Rice heading home the opener, the stand-in stopper then made a catastrophic error.

The 'keeper gave himself too much time on the ball and was closed down by Yoane Wissa in a hurry who was able to find the net in chaotic circumstances.

Yet, once the night was all said and done Ramsdale would be forgiven, largely thanks to super Havertz.

Kai Havertz's run of form in 2024

The German has been nothing short of sensational since the break. Afforded roles as both a false 9 and as the left-side 8 in Arteta's system, plaudits have followed in their droves.

Havertz has now scored four goals in his last four league matches and during that time has also registered two assists. It's safe to say that with Gabriel Jesus injured on the sidelines he has taken his chance with aplomb. £65m down the drain, eh? Perhaps not.

The 24-year-old is very quickly turning criticism into plaudits, swiftly silencing those who doubted him in the early stages of the season.

It took until the return fixture Brentford in November for the former Chelsea star to find the net from open play in Arsenal colours but this calendar year he has been utterly superb. Linking up play, making himself a nuisance for the opposition and crucially, scoring goals.

His eight in the top flight this term has already equalled his best tally in English football to date, a ringing endorsement of the success behind this transfer. That said? Was he lucky to remain on the pitch on Saturday? Quite possibly.

Havertz was booked for an elbow and then in the second period a penalty wasn't given after the German went down in the penalty area. Replays showed there was minimal contact, if any at all, prompting suggestions that he should have been shown a second yellow for simulation. Alas, he was not and upstepped the club's no.29 to power a headed winner home with just minutes left on the clock.

Despite that late strike, the ex-Leverkusen star wasn't the best performer in red and white.

Ben White's performance in numbers vs Brentford

We all know that Arsenal's right-back loves a bit of fun in the sun but since that Dubai trip, the defender has looked a man revitalised.

It's no secret that for large parts of this campaign the £50m signing has been struggling with his fitness but after a bit of rest he now looks a man possessed.

The full-back has been firmly back to his best, dropping a "10/10 every game" in the words of Gunners content creator @ltarsenal.

It's hard to dismiss that assessment, particularly in the last week. White scored a rasping drive to seal a 6-0 win for Arteta's side against Sheffield United last Monday and on Saturday evening popped up with two assists.

The first was a tantalising dinked cross that was just begging Rice to head home. Then, when his team needed it most, White popped up again. This time there was more pace on the cross and it was perfect for a lanky forward such as Havertz to head past Mark Flekken in the Brentford sticks.

His overriding numbers from the game were a delight. Not just a thorn in the Bees' defence, supplying three key passes, Arsenal's no.4 completed 89% of his passes and completed 100% of his tackles. To further substantiate his influence on proceedings, White had 84 touches of the ball, more than any player from either side in the capital.

This was a remarkably composed performance but it's become a regularity in the last few months. In the last five games, White's pass success rate has only dipped below 88% on one occasion with a season-high 97% against West Ham.

The three key passes the England international provided versus Frank's side were also the most he's registered in a single match all season; fine work indeed.

With Gareth Southgate set to name his team for the next England camp very shortly, White's name certainly deserves to be on it. It's just a shame he'll likely be overlooked.

Clement benches Wright in predicted Rangers lineup vs Hearts

Glasgow Rangers recorded a solid 3-0 away win over St Johnstone last weekend as they ascended to the top of the Premiership table for the first time since 2022.

Under previous managers, the Ibrox side would have wilted under the pressure last week, but in Philippe Clement, they have a boss who has totally transformed the mentality of the side in just five months.

They now find themselves leading Celtic by two points in the league table, and a win over Hearts tomorrow afternoon could see the gap being stretched to five points, showing how quickly things can change.

The Europa League last 16 draw has seen the Light Blues handed a tricky clash against Benfica, with the first leg on March 7 and this means Clement will be preparing his squad for the hectic schedule which is set to follow.

This could mean there are a couple of changes to face the Jambos at Ibrox tomorrow and with this in mind, here's a look at who could make the starting XI for the key league clash…

1 GK – Jack Butland

Jack Butland

Arguably the most important signing the club made last summer. Butland has been in wonderful form since swapping the Premier League for Scotland and if he maintains this until the end of the season, an England call-up to the Euro 2024 squad would not be a surprise.

The former Crystal Palace shot-stopper has kept an impressive 13 clean sheets in 26 league ties and this has been imperative in the Gers' chase for glory.

Another shutout tomorrow could be crucial, that’s for sure.

2 RB – James Tavernier

James Tavernier

The number one spot and right-back area pretty much pick themselves and Tavernier will be hoping to continue his wonderful run of form against Hearts this season.

In three previous meetings since the start of the campaign, the defender has scored against the Gorgie outfit three times while grabbing two assists too, and another goal involvement or two tomorrow could give the Gers another win.

3 CB – Connor Goldson

Rangers defender Connor Goldson.

While Butland has been excellent in between the posts, Connor Goldson has been a rock at the heart of the defence.

The Englishman has missed only three matches this term, signifying his importance to the team, and while he is prone to the odd error – notably against Aberdeen when he was caught out with a long ball over the top – his performances have been excellent.

4 CB – John Souttar

John Souttar

Retaining his place alongside Goldson is the Scottish centre-back, who has formed a wonderful partnership next to his older colleague.

Indeed, he has started six of the previous seven Premiership matches next to Goldson, in which the Gers have conceded just three times.

5 LB – Ridvan Yilmaz

Ridvan Yilmaz

With squad rotation being key of late, Borna Barisic was brought into the starting XI for the clash against St Johnstone, but tomorrow, it will be Yilmaz who is unleashed.

His resurgence under Clement has been a joy to watch as he has been able to produce some of his finest performances since arriving in Glasgow in 2022.

The £5m signing was hailed as a “high quality” player by former sporting director Ross Wilson and this term, he has scored twice and grabbed an assist, while looking like he could be the heir to Barisic’s throne.

6 CM – John Lundstram

Rangers'JohnLundstramduring training.

The Englishman is out of contract in a couple of months, but his recent performances under the 49-year-old coach indicate that he should be offered a new deal.

He has missed only one game thus far under the new regime and this was due to injury, proving that he is the first name on the team sheet, and he will start against Hearts.

7 CM – Mohamed Diomande

Mohammed Diomande

The January arrival opened the scoring last week with an excellent long-range effort which nestled in the St Johnstone net, and it was the goal which certainly eased the nerves.

He deserves another start tomorrow and, along with Lundstram, the duo could pull the strings in the heart of the midfield against the Tynecastle outfit.

8 RW – Ross McCausland

Rangers forward Ross McCausland.

Former Aberdeen winger Scott Wright was given a rare start against the Saints last Sunday – only his seventh of the season – but he failed to take his opportunity.

The Scot took just 21 touches, completed only eight passes and lost possession nine times in what was a performance lacking any sort of willingness to make something happen.

Ross McCausland will therefore come into the starting XI to replace him, and he has been a much bigger threat in front of goal this term.

The 20-year-old has scored twice and provided three assists for the senior side since October, and he will only get better with age.

9 AM – Todd Cantwell

Todd Cantwell

Another player who has seen his performances improve under Clement, especially domestically.

The English midfielder has scored five goals in his previous nine league matches and he is flourishing in the number ten role of late, showcasing his attacking qualities.

Another excellent display against Hearts could maybe even see him score yet again in the top flight.

10 LW – Oscar Cortes

Oscar Cortes for Colombia.

Abdallah Sima is not yet ready to return to the first team yet, while Rabbi Matondo missed the clash against the Saints and this could mean Cortes starts for the second week in a row.

He has yet to score for the Ibrox side but is not without trying. Indeed, across his four league appearances, the 20-year-old has created a big chance and averaged 1.5 key passes per game, decent statistics considering he has averaged only 44 minutes per game.

If a slot in the XI isn't empty, then you just wait for your chance – Shahbaz Nadeem

The left-arm spinner made his first-class debut before any of his India team-mates in the Ranchi Test, but the wait has been worth it for the man from Jharkhand

Karthik Krishnaswamy in Ranchi21-Oct-20191:24

‘Watched cricket for too long on TV, wanted to be on it’ – Nadeem

The ball is dangled up, above the batsman’s eyeline. He leaves his crease, almost involuntarily, to try and reach it. He ends up getting nowhere near it.The ball does two devious things. It drifts in first, and that causes the batsman to open up, again almost involuntarily. Then it spins far more than the batsman expects, and he’s left groping for it as it rips past his outside edge.T Bavuma st Saha b Nadeem 32.It’s a classic left-arm spinner’s dismissal, and it’s quite a way to get your first wicket in Test cricket. For Shahbaz Nadeem, it also happened to be his 425th in first-class cricket.Watch cricket on ESPN+

Nadeem has been playing first-class cricket since December 2004. Every other member of this India XI made their first-class debut after him. It’s quite a story: he began playing for Jharkhand at 15, and was nearly twice as old when he made his Test debut. He has learned plenty in the intervening years. He began as a purveyor of flat and quickish left-arm spin, and gradually evolved into the kind of bowler he’s now become.”When I began, I was really young, and our team was mostly built around fast bowling,” he said at the end of the third day’s play. “We didn’t really have spinners. Basically, we would mostly play on green wickets, and when I used to bowl fast on green wickets the ball used to skid onto the bat quickly.”So I realised that if I have to play on green wickets, I’ll have to start flighting the ball, and I’ll have to change my bowling so that I can get whatever little purchase I can off the pitch, which I won’t get with a flatter trajectory. The changes began there, after 2-3 years, and I began learning flight variations in order to get wickets even on those pitches. You can say that it helped me to not get helpful wickets at that early stage.”It was an interesting exercise to watch Nadeem bowl in tandem with Ravindra Jadeja, who is among the quickest spinners in world cricket. It isn’t that Jadeja doesn’t vary his pace or trajectory. There was an over, for instance, where he bowled two flighted deliveries wide of off stump that Temba Bavuma drove towards the two fielders in the covers. Jadeja followed this with a quicker, flatter one on a similar length that gave Bavuma no time to get forward to. It ripped off the pitch with extra bounce and beat the outside edge by a big margin.Nadeem’s variations are a little subtler, and there is a bit of Rangana Herath about him, in the sense that he looks to create different angles by varying his release points and wrist positions, while still trying to get most of his deliveries to end up within the line of the stumps. That wicket-to-wicket line kept the right-hand batsmen on a tight leash: in the first innings, they faced 42 balls from him but only managed two scoring shots. Before he was stumped off that hypnotically flighted ball, Bavuma had faced seven balls from Nadem and scored no runs. There is obvious quality in Nadeem’s bowling, but he’s still only fourth-choice among India’s Test spinners, behind Jadeja, R Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav, whose troublesome shoulder paved the way for his inclusion here in Ranchi. Nadeem is realistic about where he stands, but he knows he’ll be in and around the squad if he maintains his levels of performance.”This was the motivation, the chance I got here,” Nadeem said. “The motivation came from knowing that I might get a chance if something happened to someone. Whichever spinners we have, they’re all doing well. As a cricketer, you have to realise that the slot you’re fighting for, it has to be empty in the first place. If it isn’t empty, you just wait for your chance.”The wait has lasted many years, some of which have brought bucketloads of first-class wickets. There were 51 Ranji Trophy wickets in the 2015-16 season, and 56 the season after that. To many watching from outside, it can seem like a difficult wait, but first-class cricketers enjoy first-class cricket for its own sake too. Even when he’s away playing for, say, India A, Nadeem says Jharkhand, his first-class team, always remains on his mind.”We enjoy [playing first-class cricket] a lot,” Nadeem said. “Playing for Jharkhand is a motivation too, because whoever my team-mates are at Jharkhand, I’ve known them for a long time, some of them for close to 15 years. I’ve played with some of them since childhood, at junior level, so it’s always fun when I play for Jharkhand, and it’s a different sort of feeling.”Wherever I might be playing, if there’s a Jharkhand match, my heart says I need to go play that match too, because apart from the match, there’s friendships and laughter as well.”If he keeps bowling the way he did on Monday, Nadeem might have to make room in his life for an entirely new set of friendships.

Saldo do ano

West Ham had a ‘bigger talent than Rice’ but now he’s not played all season

Without a doubt, the best talent to come out of West Ham United's academy in recent times is that of Declan Rice. The defensive-midfielder managed to captain his boyhood club to a European title and is one of the most expensive British players ever after his £105m sale to Arsenal.

Granted, the midfielder did spend some of his career at Chelsea, but the majority of his development came whilst with the Hammers.

Despite the fee involved being an obscene amount of money for any player, Rice has proven to be worth every penny to Arsenal within the first half of the season.

The 25-year-old has played a total of 34 games for the Gunners this season and has managed to contribute to nine goals during that time. That is, despite being deployed in defensive-midfield for the vast majority of his games this season.

Of all the Premier League summer transfer window signings, it's hard to choose another addition who comes close to having a similar sort of impact on their respective team.

However, one of the few names which springs to mind is Dominik Szoboszlai's. The Hungary international has brought a new layer of depth to Liverpool's attack thanks to his passing range and vision.

The 23-year-old was signed by Jurgen Klopp for a fee worth £60m. Since arriving in Merseyside, the attacking-midfielder has played 28 games and has managed to contribute to a total of nine goals during that time.

Although flashy signings are all well and good, the backbone of every team should be their academy. This is one area of the club that West Ham have seemed to run well in recent seasons.

Players such as Joe Cole, Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick were all developed within the West Ham youth setup and managed to have longstanding Premier League careers.

However, one player who was touted for greatness on more than one occasion is that of Reece Oxford.

Why Reece Oxford was rated so highly

Many outside of West Ham may not have heard of the defender, but the former sporting director of Borussia Monchengladbach, Max Eberl, heaped praise on Oxford in 2017 with some stellar words: He is one of England's best defensive talents.

Reece-Oxford-and-Slaven-Bilic

Eberl stated: "Reece Oxford has played for England at youth level and is considered one of the country’s best young defensive talents. This loan deal gives us the chance to add a very interesting player to our squad.

"On top of that, we’ve had good experience with signing young Premier League players in the recent past."

Receiving this sort of praise at the young age of 18 shows just how talented Oxford was. The towering centre-back even made 17 appearances for West Ham whilst at the club.

He oozed so much talent that the Daily Star even reported that some rated the youngster 'higher than Declan Rice.'

Speaking about the development of the two players, Slaven Bilic once commented: "A couple of years before, when I’d come to West Ham, I couldn’t move around the place without hearing that Reece Oxford was going to be the next big thing.

“Reece made his debut at 16 and we beat Arsenal 2-0, you can imagine the hype. He had an entourage, he got injuries, maybe lost a bit of confidence and focus. Dec’s [Rice] was a different story. He was able to come in without the same expectations."

Despite becoming The Hammers' youngest-ever player, things were seemingly not meant to be for Oxford at West Ham as he underwent multiple loan spells with German sides Borussia Monchengladbach and FC Augsburg.

What happened to Oxford and where is he now

The latter of those aforementioned loan spells was eventually turned into a permanent deal in 2019 when the Bundesliga minnows forked out a fee rumoured to be worth around £2.1m for the youngster.

Since his arrival at Augsburg, the defender has managed to appear a total of 71 times for the club whilst scoring three goals.

However, things have since taken a turn for the worse, as Oxford hasn't managed to play a game of football since last season.

This is likely due to the muscular problems he has been suffering with since last season which have, so far kept him away from the pitch for a total of 32 games.

Despite his deterioration of playing time this season, Oxford is still just 25-years-old so, upon his return to first-team football, he could yet rekindle his career and find his form from his earlier days.

Tom Kohler-Cadmore blitzes 165* on shortened day as Yorkshire take charge

Tom Kohler-Cadmore thrashed a 113-ball hundred to celebrate his 100th first-class innings as Yorkshire plundered a depleted Warwickshire attack on a truncated opening day of their Specsavers County Championship match at Edgbaston. In two sessions before rain wiped out play after tea, Kohler-Cadmore struck an unbeaten 165 from 175 balls, with 26 fours and one six, out of his side’s excellent foundation of 261 for 2. A few days after England’s director of men’s cricket, Ashley Giles, confirmed he was once again available for consideration, Kohler-Cadmore reached the close 10 runs shy of his first-class career best.He added 184 for the second wicket with debutant Tom Loten, a 20-year-old from York, who showed an excellent temperament in making 58 for a maiden half-century in his first first-class innings. Together the pair ensured that Yorkshire emphatically bounced back from their record defeat, by 433 runs to Kent at Headingley last week.On a good batting pitch, offering nothing to the seamers and only the slowest of turn to the spinners, it was a good toss for the White Rose to win and Kohler-Cadmore was soon taking advantage, clubbing the ball through the off-side as he charged to 50 from 49 balls. He and Adam Lyth added 77 in 17.4 overs for the first wicket before Lyth edged Craig Miles, recalled to the team in place of the injured George Garrett, to second slip where Sam Hain took a sharp catch.Loten survived some uncertain early moments and a couple of loud appeals against spinner Jeetan Patel but settled impressively to play with patience and composure. He reached his half-century from 142 balls, content to take the minor role while the more assertive Kohler-Cadmore moved to his ninth first-class century with 13 fours and a six.Loten finally fell to the last ball before tea when he edged offspinner Alex Thomson low to Will Rhodes at slip. Yorkshire were denied an opportunity to build further in the final session when rain set in during the tea interval.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

According to , the Catalan side tried to convince the player to stay at the club and were even willing to increase his wages to €2m (£1.7m), however, the player refused as he wanted to move to England for a different experience. The report adds that the Blues assured him of regular game time, something he would not have seen at Barcelona due to the presence of Robert Lewandowski in attack.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

The 2022/23 La Liga champions even told the player that he could play at least 50 per cent of the club's matches next season as Lewandowski is unlikely to feature in every game due to his age and Vitor Roque is likely to be sent out on loan. Guiu's representatives were unconvinced, considering the team will now have a new head coach in Hansi Flick who has never seen the Spaniard play.
