    TELL ME MORE

After dropping points against Al-Raed, Luis Castro wanted an inspired performance from his troops. He was delighted to see his men take the lead just five minutes into the match after Ronaldo set up Talisca. However, after taking the lead, the Knights of Najd took their feet off the pedal and were happy to sit back and absorb the pressure.

Al Feiha's Fashon Sakala kept asking questions of Aymeric Laporte and Co. but his attempts hardly troubled Bento between the sticks. Just as the two teams were about to head towards the tunnel, Ronaldo turned back the clock and scored from a direct free-kick. The Portuguese shortened his run-up and simply passed the ball over the wall into the top corner to double the lead.

After the resumption of play, Al-Nassr took control of the match and looked more comfortable going forward. Ronaldo could have doubled his lead on the hour-mark but an uncharacteristic miss saw him balloon his effort over the crossbar in a one-on-one situation with the keeper. However, Marcelo Brozovic made it 3-0 after he scored from a tight angle while Talisca capped off the evening with another sensational free-kick. Sakala did pull one back two minutes after Brozovic scored, but it was nothing more than a consolation strike.

Ronaldo is just one short of scoring 900 official career goals after he netted against Al-Feiha. He is also just one behind Lionel Messi for all-time career free kicks (64).

    THE MVP(S)

Ronaldo and Talisca were the star performers of the match. The Portuguese has started the season where he left off in the previous campaign by scoring in the first two Saudi Pro League matches. Talisca was equally brilliant. Not only did he take the pressure off by scoring an early goal, his free kick deep into stoppage time was a work of art.

  • THE BIG LOSER

Al Feiha head coach Christos Kontis must shoulder the blame for the lacklustre performance of his side. His men had their moments in the first half but failed to capitalize. And when the home fans were expecting a reaction in the next 45 minutes there was hardly any for the bulk of the half. They lost 1-0 to a 10-man Al-Taawoun in their campaign opener and after this insipid performance, Razovic must go back to the drawing board and conjure up a fresh tactical plan.

"This is another important milestone in Kristian’s development and maturation as a Homegrown player," DC United general manager and chief soccer officer Ally Mackay said in a statement. "Going abroad and getting experience at a Premier League side is a testament to the work that Kristian has done to earn this opportunity.

Fletcher, who signed a homegrown contract with DC in 2022, has made 13 MLS appearances this season, scoring one goal.

“I’m happy to be here and buzzing to get started," Fletcher said. "I knew Forest was a big Club, but being at the stadium and understanding more about the history, I now can’t wait to meet my teammates and get going.

"I want to keep learning and developing and I'm confident this is just the start of what will be an incredibly rewarding journey with Forest and our fans."

This will be his second stint in Europe after joining Swansea City's academy side on loan in 2023-24, where he scored eight goals.

Tottenham now eyeing move to sign £60m forward who may replace Richarlison

Tottenham are eyeing up a £60m forward as they look to strengthen their forward line this summer.

Tottenham to revamp squad

After finishing 5th in the Premier League during Ange Postecoglou's first season at the helm, Tottenham are looking to make major changes to their squad this summer as they look to regain a place in the Champions League.

The Australian stated earlier this year that it will take multiple transfer windows to turn Spurs into a complete force.

"We haven’t had any European football this year, so if you’ve got European football as well, it’s impossible to try to maintain a level of performance in the Premier League and play in multiple competitions unless you have a strong squad," said Postecoglou.

ByEmilio Galantini May 24, 2024

Part of the key to building a strong squad is moving on players who are not of a high enough quality, and in Spurs' case, a number of names could depart this summer.

Emerson Royal, Bryan Gil, Giovani Lo Celso, Troy Parrott, Joe Rodon, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Richarlison, Tanguy Ndombele, Sergio Reguilon, Japhet Tanganga, Manor Solomon and Djed Spence have all been rumoured as the Tottenham players up for sale this summer, and it is believed Postecoglou is eyeing upgrades across the board.

The Tottenham boss also spoke of the need to revamp his forward line recently. "Yeah, absolutely. It's no secret. You saw the way we finished the season. We obviously lost Richy and Timo as well with injuries but we're fairly light in that area," said Postecoglou on the need for new attackers.

"We started last season with Manor [Solomon] and [Ivan] Perisic and we were quite healthy in that front third in terms of numbers, but as the year went on it became pretty evident that we need to bulk up. We're in Europe as well next year so we'll have more games and it's definitely an area of the park we'll need to strengthen."

Tottenham eye move to sign £60m forward who may replace Richarlison

Now, an update on Spurs' pursuit of fresh names at the top end of the pitch has been provided by GiveMeSport, which reports that Tottenham are considering a move for Evanilson after monitoring the FC Porto frontman's performances during the second half of the season.

In terms of a fee for the South American, GMS adds that Newcastle were previously expecting to pay around £60m for the striker. Given Spurs have no Champions League football next term, such a transfer would likely need to be funded by player sales.

As Evanilson is a striker, moving on a player like Richarlison would make sense to help fund the move. The Brazilian is earning £90,000 a week at Tottenham and is valued at around £35m by Transfermarkt. While that fee may not be enough to fund the full deal for Evanilson, it would go a long way to helping land a player who enjoyed a more prolific campaign than his fellow countryman.

West Ham lining up surprise manager who could be Pellegrini 2.0

West Ham United's hopes of qualifying for European competition now border on minuscule after David Moyes' side ceded further ground in the Premier League against Liverpool on Saturday afternoon.

While the Hammers are still in a good position and will be confident of a top-half finish, there has been much to be desired by this squad this term and it seems that sporting director Tim Steidten has decided that it's time to shift the pillars of power in east London.

Only at the start of the week, the general consensus was that West Ham had made Sporting Lison's coveted manager Ruben Amorim their "top target", according to The Athletic's David Ornstein, but that's now looking unlikely.

Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim

Who will be Moyes' successor (who is out of contract at the end of the season) and who is the best person for the job?

West Ham's search for a manager

Steidten has marked a lengthy list of candidates to take the reins from Moyes this summer, and while Amorim is still in the mix, The Guardian have revealed that talks have been held with Julen Lopetegui.

One of the newer, surprise names to enter circulation earlier this week is that of Maurizio Sarri, according to Lazio News 24, formerly of Chelsea and resigning from his post at Lazio only last month.

Lazio manager Maurizio Sarri

It's understood that Sarri seeks a swift return to management and is enticed by propositions at West Ham and Newcastle United in the Premier League.

How Maurizio Sarri would get West Ham playing

Sarri has been described as a "genius" in the past by defender Kalidou Koulibaly, who noted his ability to make his players notice things previously unseen, trumping the opposition due to being several steps ahead.

Mauricio Pochettino even remarked in the past that Sarri's teams "play the most beautiful football in Europe", with his meticulous approach and erudite footballing brain drilling a perfect tactical understanding into his players.

His brave, progressive tactics have been coined as 'Sarri-ball', with such a style certainly disparate to Moyes' pragmatic, oft-perceived negative brand of football.

However, Sarri has also been known to be obstinate and tactically inflexible, and while he won the Europa League and enjoyed a blistering start to life as Chelsea manager during the 2018/19 campaign, the lion's share of his managerial career has been spent in his homeland.

In fact, that sole season at Stamford Bridge is the only time he has led a club away from Italy, and while the 65-year-old would unquestionably bring a more attractive style of play to West Ham, his stubbornness might prove to disgruntle supporters when the going gets tough.

It could even serve as a repeat of the mistake that saw an ageing Manuel Pellegrini replace Moyes following the Scotsman's brief first tenure at West Ham in 2018, leading the Irons to a tenth-place finish in his first campaign but making a string of wayward moves in the market and being sacked – and replaced by Moyes – in December 2019 after losing nine games from 12 matches.

Sarri, who has demonstrated himself in England in the past, like Pellegrini, might not be the answer to the club's problems. With such a long list of managerial suitors, it might be worth moving for someone who's prepared to build in the long term.

The experienced, high-profile targets – like Pellegrini's tenure showcased – don't always represent a route to success.

O’Neil must drop Hwang and unleash "impressive" Wolves star

Wolverhampton Wanderers can end their 2023/24 season on a high this afternoon by ruining Jürgen Klopp’s farewell at Anfield.

The German ends his nine-year association with Liverpool today, but a win for Gary O’Neil’s men would be the perfect way to wrap up a decent campaign, giving them some momentum heading into the summer.

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil before a Premier League game.

Wolves suffered a 3-1 defeat to Crystal Palace during their final home game of the season in midweek and O’Neil could perhaps make a few changes to his starting XI for the visit to Anfield.

Hwang Hee-Chan may have scored 13 goals this term, but the South Korean was poor throughout the clash against the Eagles, and he could well be replaced.

Hwang Hee-Chan’s game in numbers vs Crystal Palace

Tasked with leading the line just in front of Matheus Cunha, O’Neil was looking for the former RB Leipzig centre-forward to offer a dangerous threat against a resurgent Palace side.

Instead, the manager was forced to watch a poor display which saw the South Korean manage just one shot all match (which was off target), succeed with zero dribble attempts and miss a big chance.

Not only that, but Hwang’s distribution was also poor, as he completed just 14 of his 19 attempted passes while taking only 27 touches, 20 fewer than Daniel Bentley in goal.

Winning one duel out of five and losing possession nine times throughout the game suggests it wasn’t his finest performance for Wolves. Could O’Neil make a bold call ahead of the match against Liverpool and bring Pablo Sarabia into the starting XI after he started on the bench in midweek?

Pablo Sarabia’s statistics this season

The Spaniard has enjoyed a good season for the Old Gold, registering 14 goal contributions – four goals and ten assists – across 36 matches.

Sarabia’s goal involvements have come against the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Chelsea, which suggests he could be the ideal player to call upon against Liverpool this afternoon.

Thomas Tuchel, his former manager at Paris Saint-Germain, hailed Sarabia for his excellent abilities and work rate, saying:

"Pablo is really impressive. He runs well, with and without a ball. His game without the ball is a great example. He plays with a lot of intensity and does not stop [working] defensively."

Having a player who is willing to track back and commit to defensive duties could be vital if O’Neil wants to secure a point or three against the Merseyside outfit, with the former Bournemouth boss likely keeping his fingers crossed that the playmaker will be available, amid a "slight doubt" over his availability.

Sarabia currently ranks fourth among his teammates for overall Sofascore rating (7.22) in the top flight, while also ranking third for shots on target per game (0.6) and first for big chances created (nine), which is yet more evidence that he should be unleashed this afternoon.

£90k-p/w Wolves star could now be more vital than Pedro Neto

Wolves have a player in their squad who could be even more important than Neto between now and May

ByRoss Kilvington Feb 26, 2024

Dropping Hwang would be a bold call by the manager, but Sarabia clearly has a lot to offer, both in the final third and when Wolves don’t have the ball, indicating he could be the player who may make the difference against Klopp’s men in the final match of the season.

Chelsea hold talks with "elite" £10.5m-a-year Pochettino replacement

A Sky Sports reporter has lifted the lid on some talks between Chelsea and an "elite manager", with Mauricio Pochettino leaving Stamford Bridge by mutual consent on Tuesday.

Pochettino exit confirmed after Chelsea announcement

Uncertainty surrounded the future of Pochettino in the build up to Tuesday evening, despite a brilliant end to the Premier League campaign where the club qualified for Europe after winning all of their last five league games, averaging nearly three goals per game in that run.

Chelsea hoping to tempt Laporta with £68 million bid for Barcelona star

The Blues are plotting an audacious new summer swoop.

ByEmilio Galantini May 21, 2024

As well as this, Pochettino guided Chelsea to a Carabao Cup final and FA Cup semi-final, with the Blues also finishing just five points off a top four place in the end. While the first half of 2023/2024 clearly wasn't good enough, especially after Todd Boehly and co pumped over £400 million into Pochettino's squad last summer, there was at least a hint of positivity and something to build upon towards the latter stages.

Chelsea 2-1 Bournemouth

Brighton 1-2 Chelsea

Nottingham Forest 2-3 Chelsea

Chelsea 5-0 West Ham

Chelsea 2-0 West Ham

However, the board clearly couldn't see a way forward with the ex-Spurs boss, and the feeling was apparently mutual. Chelsea announced that Pochettino has left the club by mutual consent, with Boehly, Behdad Eghbali, Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley now tasked with finding the Argentine's replacement.

Even before Pochettino's departure, Chelsea were doing their due-diligence on managerial candidates, in the event he left. Roberto De Zerbi has been discussed internally as a top candidate at Chelsea, according to some reports, with the Italian also keen to make the move to west London.

It's also believed that Boehly could even consider former head coaches to succeed Pochettino. Antonio Conte has been linked with a surprise return to Chelsea, with Thomas Tuchel named as another potential option as he prepares to part with his £10.5m-a-year salary at Bayern Munich.

Chelsea hold "loose talks" with Tuchel to replace Pochettino

According to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg, Chelsea have held loose talks with Tuchel over replacing Pochettino, and the German has been "waiting" for his former side's official announcement over parting company with their now-ex manager.

Given how bitterly things ended between Tuchel and the current Chelsea board nearly two years ago, it would be a shock to see him make the return, but he certainly has his credentials given that he even guided them to a Champions League title in 2021.

Called an "elite manager" by Paul Ince, defender Ben Chilwell has also praised Tuchel as an "unbelievable" coach.

“As players, we have confidence in the manager. We know we are not going to get a better manager,” said Chilwell (via Standard Sport).

“I am not just saying it, he is unbelievable. I think he has a lot of trust in us. Now there’s that stability, which could have potentially been tricky, is now resolved it is up to us to work and try and get consistency on the pitch."

Kraigg Brathwaite, Shane Dowrich steer West Indies to commanding position against England

Windies batsmen reach battling half-centuries, but England openers remain steady in pursuit

The Report by Matt Roller10-Jul-2020Battling half-centuries from Kraigg Brathwaite and Shane Dowrich put West Indies into a commanding position on the third day at the Ageas Bowl, before England’s openers withstood a superb spell of new-ball bowling to cut the deficit to double figures.Jason Holder said on the second evening that the first hour would help set the tone for the rest of the day, and Brathwaite and Shai Hope continued where they had left off on a sunny morning, dropping anchor and putting miles into the legs of England’s seamers. While James Anderson and Ben Stokes eventually made breakthroughs, West Indies followed the template for batting in England, leaving and defending watchfully and putting away the occasional bad balls to give themselves a first-innings lead of 114.Questions will continue to be asked about England’s team selection and their decision to bat first, not least after Stuart Broad’s candid comments immediately before the start of play. Mark Wood and Jofra Archer had been asked to bring express pace and both did so, regularly passing the 90mph/145kph mark on the speed gun, but were set to go wicketless until Wood castled No. 11 Shannon Gabriel. But credit should mainly go to the West Indian batsmen, who managed to build partnerships regularly. There had been lingering doubts throughout the build-up to the series about their ability to occupy the crease for long periods of time, which were largely dispelled as the majority of the middle order managed to soak up balls in the middle.Hope had dug in valiantly on the second evening, fending off a short-ball barrage from Wood, but struggled for any kind of fluency in the morning session. It remains one of the great mysteries how he can look so settled at the crease in an ODI shirt and yet endure such a poor run in Test cricket since the 2017 tour. He got a life when Archer trapped him lbw only to have overstepped, but fell an over later, slashing ill-advisedly at Dom Bess’ offspin and being caught at slip.Brathwaite, playing the ball late and ticking the strike over where he could, dug in to bring up a first half-century in almost two years before lunch. He could have considered himself unfortunate when given out lbw to a nip-backer from Stokes at the end of an over in which he had already hit three boundaries; he reviewed the decision after a long think, but it was upheld after the ball was shown to be clipping the stumps and umpire’s call on impact. But while England had faltered in struggling to build partnerships, West Indies flourished. Shamarh Brooks, in his first Test innings outside India, got up and running with four early boundaries – two off Jofra Archer, two off Bess – while Roston Chase defended well and drove firmly whenever England pitched the ball up to him.Kraigg Brathwaite bats•Getty Images

Brooks looked certain to push on towards a meaningful score before he feathered an edge through to Jos Buttler, which brought Jermaine Blackwood to the crease. Blackwood had insisted he was a more patient and focused batsman than his previous incarnation, but looked his usual frenetic self during his brief stay, charging Bess and slashing him to Anderson at mid-off for 12.Dowrich joined Chase to take West Indies through to tea, scoring freely to start his innings before settling into a steadier rhythm. The pair put on 81, the game’s highest partnership to date, either side of the interval as England strained for a wicket, but Wood failed to find much bite on a slow pitch. It was Anderson who eventually broke through with the new ball, trapping Chase in front on review, but by that point West Indies’ lead had begun to look commanding. After trying to rouse his troops after tea, Stokes eventually realised he would have to do things by himself. Jason Holder had landed the first punch in the battle of the allrounders yesterday, but Stokes fought back with a sharp bouncer which his opposite number flapped down to long leg, and Alzarri Joseph’s enterprising cameo came to an end as Stokes nipped one through him and struck the top of off to reach 150 Test wickets. He got the key wicket of Dowrich, who had battled well for his 61, when a back-of-a-length ball flicked the back of his bat on the way through to Buttler, before Wood cleaned up Gabriel to leave West Indies with a first-innings lead of 114.The final 10 overs of the day were gripping. After being bowled while leaving the ball in the first innings, Dom Sibley shuffled his stance across towards the off side, and was given a working-over by Gabriel and Kemar Roach in the channel, but he survived until the close, nudging a single down to long leg off the final ball to take the deficit below 100.
