Slot must axe Liverpool ace who earns more than Diaz & Konate

One bad afternoon aside, Liverpool have been brilliant under Arne Slot this season. The Dutchman inherited a top-class squad from Jurgen Klopp, who had run out of energy after crafting an illustrious dynasty, but the Reds certainly weren’t infallible.

Liverpool were pulled from the title race last season by a wretched run of Premier League form throughout April, with eventual champions in the Europa League, Atalanta, and FA Cup, Manchester United, defeating the Anfield side en route to gold.

Klopp did end his tenure with a vicarious campaign in the Carabao Cup, but there is plenty for this Liverpool side still to give under new leadership, with some players excitingly going from strength to strength.

Let’s take a look at two of the best.

Luis Diaz & Ibrahima Konate for Liverpool in 2023/24

Luis Diaz has been a revelation this season. Across five Premier League matches, the Colombian winger has scored five fine goals and claimed one assist.

He started fast last term but after bagging in both of Liverpool’s opening fixtures scored just one goal and assist apiece over the subsequent 18 matches.

His underlying numbers from last year are not too dissimilar to those of the opening weeks, but there’s little question that he is proving to be far more effective and deadly with his attacking involvements.

He’s not the only one enjoying an exciting resurgence. Ibrahima Konate has been immense in Liverpool’s backline this season, scoring at the San Siro in the Champions League last week and blending technique with titanic defensive resolve in the English top flight.

As per Sofascore, the France international has won 77% of his duels in the league across his five appearances, also completing 91% of his passes and placing a gorgeous assist for Diaz’s opening goal against Bournemouth last weekend.

He’s been a beast of a defender since signing for the Merseysiders from RB Leipzig when his £36m release clause was met in 2021. Still only 25 years old, Konate has completed 96 matches for the outfit but ebbed and flowed from form last term.

Indeed, he fell by the wayside as Liverpool’s carriage also toppled under Klopp in 2024, with The Athletic’s James Pearce commenting on his “dreadful” displays. He was one of the chief culprits as Crystal Palace defeated Liverpool at Anfield in April, which is what Pearce was commenting on.

Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate looks dejected

Pundit Jamie Carragher hurled criticism at the talent toward the backend of last season too, saying: “Konate’s been so poor of late, really poor. Liverpool need to buy a centre-back in the summer.”

Liverpool, as we all know, didn’t buy a new centre-half in the summer but Konate is proving – so far – that he has what it takes to partner Virgil van Dijk with steel and authority throughout the duration of the campaign.

He’s had mixed luck on the injury front at Liverpool but Konate has been Hercules-esque across these opening couple of months and is an indispensable member of the starting line-up right now.

Both players are enjoying fine a resurgence and will be eager to pen lucrative new deals to reflect their importance at the heart of Slot’s project. After all, Kostas Tsimikas, for example, takes home a heftier pay packet.

Why Liverpool should get rid of Kostas Tsimikas

Liverpool signed Tsimikas from Greek side Olympiakos for a shrewd fee of about £12m in 2020, meaning that the left-back was recruited for the recently-crowned Premier League champions in an attempt to bolster the high-flying existing options.

Liverpool left-back Kostas Tsimikas.

He’s never quite established himself, though has played an important role throughout the later phase of Klopp’s tenure. Indeed, the 28-year-old has played 90 times for Liverpool and has assisted 17 goals, which stands at an average rate of 0.19 per match.

For reference, Trent Alexander-Arnold’s career assist rate for Liverpool is 0.26 per game, so Tsimikas knows a thing or two about playmaking, have no doubt.

As per FBref, he actually ranks among the top 2% of full-backs across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 6% for shot-creating actions, the top 7% for passes attempted and the top 9% for progressive passes per 90.

But it’s not all about assisting the forwards. He’s solid but unspectacular, and given that Andy Robertson is now 30 years old and Liverpool have been linked with a new left-back for some time, it would be much more wise to sell the Greece native and allow Robertson to compete with whoever is – possibly – brought in to strengthen Slot’s unit.

Tsimikas signed a new contract with Liverpool one year ago today that extends his service on Merseyside to 2027. It means that the second-choice left-back is now earning £75k per week, documented as more than the earnings of both Diaz and Konate.

Indeed, Konate, who has entered the penultimate year of his one and only signed deal with Liverpool, earns £70k per week, with the £55k-per-week Diaz also yet to extend the deal that saw him move from Porto in January 2022.

This is not a… concern for the Reds, but Liverpool need to rise to another level if they wish to keep pace with Manchester City and Arsenal at the summit of English football. Tsimikas is not unexpendable, with transfer insider Dean Jones revealing last October that Liverpool were assessing their options despite recently tying him down to new terms.

Described “woeful” by reporter James Dodd last season, perhaps it’s time for something new. With prominent stars like the aforementioned still earning less than Tsimikas, something needs to change.

He may well be Jurgen Klopp’s big regret…

Ipswich could get even more out of Delap by unleashing "fantastic" star

Ipswich Town will be seeking their first Premier League victory after the international break comes to a close, as Sean Dyche’s Everton travel to Portman Road in a crunch clash near the foot of the league.

The Toffees do boast a win next to their name, whilst the Tractor Boys have gone close with four draws picked up, but that first victory still remains elusive.

Kieran McKenna will be hoping for some more magic from Liam Delap against Dyche’s men, which could end up steering the Suffolk underdogs to a rare three points, with the former Manchester City striker head and shoulders the most exciting performer for the relegation-threatened outfit this campaign to date.

Liam Delap's form this season

The ex-Man City wonderkid already has a stellar four goals next to his name from seven top-flight clashes, with the 21-year-old taking to his new surroundings like a duck to water in the process, even with Ipswich languishing near the bottom three.

His individual display against Aston Villa last month really did stand out, as Delap ran the likes of Diego Carlos and Pau Torres ragged all afternoon, who then helped Unai Emery’s men pick up a win and clean sheet against Bayern Munich just days after this thrilling 2-2 draw.

Collecting two goals for himself in that barnstorming affair, Delap will want to pick back up from where he left off when Everton come to town shortly, after a break which saw the 21-year-old line up for the England U21s.

Whilst the new Tractor Boys recruit has shone, other attackers at McKenna’s disposal haven’t quite excited the masses at Portman Road in a similar way, with the likes of Omari Hutchinson notably struggling in the Premier League.

Selected regularly in an attacking midfield spot this season so far, despite regularly being deployed down the wings last campaign, this experimentation with the ex-Chelsea man just isn’t working, with the 5 foot 9 youngster goalless across his difficult stretch of seven league games.

This could throw up a selection dilemma for McKenna to address, and he could be prepared to start someone else over Hutchinson next time out.

The player to get more out of Delap

By forgetting about Hutchinson and making a tweak, McKenna could well even find that he actually begins to get even more out of Delap in the long run.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The player in question here is Conor Chaplin, who has had to be patient with the chances handed to him so far in the Premier League, as the ex-Portsmouth man has made do with spots on the substitutes bench over regular action.

Chaplin has only started one game so far this campaign in the league but could be a worthwhile inclusion if thrown in for the clash versus the Toffees based on his electric numbers in a second striker role when lighting up the EFL.

Away from being a goal machine for Ipswich during the 2022/23 season – with a ridiculous 29 goals notched up from 52 games – last season saw Chaplin retreat towards becoming more of a creative force behind the main man up top, helping himself to nine assists on top of a healthy 13 strikes.

Therefore, although this is up a division in the might of the Premier League, it could be worth seeing if Chaplin can explode into life in the top flight if he is given a chance, perhaps making Delap even more of an ice-cold finisher by supplying the in form striker with more chances than he’s already getting.

Once labelled as a “fantastic” star by his manager after picking up a League One Player of the Month accolade last year, there’s little to lose on Ipswich’s end by gifting the 27-year-old an opportunity to strut his stuff in games to come.

It could well prove to be a stroke of genius, as Chaplin and Delap then strike up a potential match made in heaven.

Billings back with Bayliss and Hales at Sydney Thunder

Englishman keen to push for a BBL title after missing out last season but his availability will depend on England selection

Sydney Thunder are putting the band back together with England batter Sam Billings re-signing for another stint in the BBL, this time under new coach and former England mentor Trevor Bayliss.Billings’ return comes hot on the heels of Alex Hales, with the England duo to be reunited with Bayliss after playing previously at Thunder under Shane Bond.Billings was a popular edition at Thunder last season, having been encouraged to sign by his friend and former Thunder captain Shane Watson. He made 260 runs at a strike-rate of 142.85 in 10 innings for the Thunder last season, including two half-centuries. One of those was a stunning 48-ball 83 that threatened to single-handedly steal a game off Perth Scorchers in Perth.Billings said he was keen to push for a title this season after the Thunder lost the Knockout last season to Brisbane Heat.”I think the most exciting thing about coming back to the Thunder is the group of young players that complement the older, experienced heads,” Billings said. “Hales is obviously a high-quality player and we have all seen what he can do.”In my first experiences with Sydney Thunder last season there were obviously positive signs but we didn’t finish where we wanted to, or could finish. There is no reason we can’t take another step forward and go close to the title.”Billings’ availability for Thunder will likely be dictated by his England duties. Although he is yet to play a Test match he has been called into England’s Test squad this summer and with England set to bring an extended squad to Australia for the Ashes and coinciding England Lions fixture he could well be unavailable until late in the BBL season. England also have a one-day series against West Indies in late January.

Nottingham Forest closely monitoring £25m star who’s "close to Phil Foden"

Nottingham Forest rescued a point on their travels to secure a 2-2 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League at the AMEX on Sunday. Ramon Sosa came off the bench to score the equaliser in the 70th minute, finding the back of an empty net from Jota Silva’s square pass, after goals from Jack Hinshelwood and Danny Welbeck had put the hosts in front despite Chris Wood’s early penalty.

Morgan Gibbs-White was sent off for a second bookable offence in the second half and Nuno Espirito Santo will now need other players to step up in his absence next time out.

The Tricky Trees could also make further additions to their attacking options, to cover and provide competition for the likes of Gibbs-White, Anthony Elanga, and Callum Hudson-Odoi, by dipping into the market in January.

Latest Nottingham Forest transfer news

According to CaughtOffside, Nottingham Forest are ‘closely monitoring’ Galatasaray forward Baris Yilmaz ahead of the upcoming January transfer window. The report claims that fellow Premier League teams Brighton and Tottenham Hotspur are also eyeing up the talented winger, which means that it will not be a straightforward deal for the club to pursue.

It states that Galatasaray are looking to rake in a fee of around €30m (£25m) for the 24-year-old sensation, yet it remains to be seen whether or not any of the aforementioned clubs are willing to pay that.

CaughtOffside does, however, reveal that Brighton are planning to offer around €25m (£21m) for the Turkey international after the turn of the year, but that would be €5m below the Super Lig champions’ valuation.

For now, Forest are said to be keeping tabs on Yilmaz’s progress with Galatasaray and are interested in the Turkish whiz, as a potential target for the next transfer window.

Why Nottingham Forest should sign Baris Yilmaz

The exciting 24-year-old star’s impressive start to the 2024/25 campaign could be why the Tricky Trees are showing an interest in bringing him to England next year.

Yilmaz has fired in four goals and created three ‘big chances’ for his teammates in six appearances in the Super Lig so far this term for Galatasaray. Meanwhile, no Nottingham Forest midfielder or winger has struck more than once in the Premier League.

This suggests that, on current form, the right winger, who can also play up front, would provide Nuno with a significant goalscoring boost from the flank.

As you can see in the table above, the Turkey international also stacked up fairly well against Elanga and Hudson-Odoi at league level last term, outscoring the former and providing more creativity than the latter.

Back in April, Kayserispor coach Ilker Puren claimed that the winger’s level of performance is “close to Phil Foden” and that he will play in the Premier League because of his positional intelligence and his physical attributes.

That is staggering praise for Yilmaz, given Foden racked up 19 goals and eight assists in the Premier League last season, and illustrates why he would be an exciting addition to Forest’s squad moving forward.

But adding Poonam’s skill and her competitiveness is a huge result.””She is a different type of bowler to Melie, and we are clear on how we can best utilise her talents in our line-up. Jess Jonassen has played against her and as captain, she is very keen to work alongside her now she is with the Heat.”Noffke also believes Yadav can play a mentoring role with the young members of Heat’s squad from her experiences in international cricket. “We’re really keen for her to share those insights with our players during the tournament and will urge the group to learn as much as they can,” he said.South Africa allrounders Anneke Bosch and Nadine de Klerk are Heat’s other two overseas players. The tournament will begin with the first 20 matches all staged in Tasmania but Heat will have the chance to play four games in front of home support when the competition moves to Mackay in November.

Provincial T20 Cup: Rain plays spoilsport as Knights, Titans progress to quarterfinals

The biggest surprise in Pool B of the Provincial T20 Cup, the CSA’s domestic T20 competition, came from the skies as rain washed out one match entirely and severely reduced another to put a damper on proceedings in usually dry Bloemfontein. The Knights and the Titans, both first-division teams, will proceed to the quarterfinals, with Kwa-Zulu Natal Inland and Mpumalanga eliminated. The Knights were the strongest of the four teams and announced themselves with a six-wicket win over the Titans before a convincing win over the Kwa-Zulu Natal Inland side. They would have fancied full points in their finale against Mpumalanga, but the match got abandoned on Thursday afternoon. The Titans, on the other hand, wobbled, but successfully defended 66 in a seven-over affair against Mpumalanga, who lost both matches they played. A plucky Kwa-Zulu Natal Inland side could not match up to the Knights or the Titans but comprehensively beat Mpumalanga.Related

Runs for Rilee Rossouw
As one of the players who left, leaving a bitter taste in South African cricket’s mouth (remember the time he sent the then national coach Russell Domingo an email when he signed a Kolpak deal, and spelt Russell incorrectly?), Rilee Rossouw is already catching eyes on his return. He scored an unbeaten 73 off 51 balls to anchor the Knights’ chase of 144 against the Titans and then scored 67 off 47 balls to help the Knights post a match-winning 154 for 5 against Kwa-Zulu Natal Inland. His two half-centuries put him second on the run-scorers’ charts, behind Zubayr Hamza, and potentially back on the national radar.Delport does the business
Another returnee is Cameron Delport , who played for South Africa before becoming something of a journeyman. Delport has an impressive array of teams to his name including franchises in the PSL, CPL and Afghanistan’s Shpageeza Cricket League and has now signed on for Kwa-Zulu Natal Inland. He made an instant statement with his 39-ball 72 not out in their successful chase of 113 against Mpumalanga and though it may be too late for him to continue pushing for an international career, he is guaranteed to entertain.Dean dropped?
Test captain Dean Elgar is one of very few nationally contracted players in this competition – those who are not at the IPL are in a camp ahead of the T20 World Cup – but even his appearances were limited. Elgar captained the Titans in their first two matches, where he scored 41 in a losing cause against the Knights and 7 in their victory over Mpumalanga but sat out the must-win third game against Kwa-Zulu Natal Inland. Aaron Phangiso led the Titans in Elgar’s absence, while Jandre Pretorius opened the batting in his first appearance for the province and scored 40 runs off 39 balls to help the Titans post a winning target.Matheson’s Mpumalanga won’t take this lying down
Their twin defeats and the fact that they are one of two teams (Limpopo being the other) whose red-ball matches will not count as first-class fixtures, Mpumalanga have a lot of pride and a reputation to make. So little known are they that they were incorrectly called Limpopo by the broadcasters, and their coach Gordon Matheson was quick to point it out at the first chance he got. They may be little-known, but Mpumalanga have a few potential headliners. Wicketkeeper-batter Rubin Hermann was their top-scorer with 32 off 31 balls against Kwa-Zulu Natal Inland, and their captain, pace bowler Luvuyo Nkese, appears a good prospect.

Man Utd chiefs now eyeing move for £2.3m-a-year Champions League winner

Manchester United might be having a difficult time on the pitch, but it isn’t stopping INEOS from eyeing transfer targets for 2025, with a Ukraine international the latest to emerge on their radar, according to a new report.

Man Utd must drop 4/10 star who Neville thought was "awful"

Man Utd transfer news

The last thing that will be on most United supporters minds will be who they might sign in 2025, as results on the pitch are turning fans restless when it comes to manager Erik ten Hag. But it appears that INEOS are remaining behind the Dutchman at this moment in time, knowing that results will need to improve or a change in the dugout could happen.

Despite the uncertainty on the pitch, United are looking at potential business they can conduct in 2025. The Red Devils are being mentioned with a move for Nico Williams, as they try to throw everything they can at a deal in order to beat Barcelona to his signature.

England defender Marc Guehi

As well as looking at Williams, it has also emerged that Man United are in the market for a new defender, despite adding two centre-backs in the summer. Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi has become a “serious target” for the Red Devils, as they are preparing an offer in excess of £62 million.

Williams and Guehi appear to be potential transfer targets for 2025, but they are not the only players the Premier League side is looking at, as they also have their eye on a Real Madrid player.

Man Utd plotting move for £45k-p/w star as competition for Onana

According to a report from Spain relayed by The Real Champs, Manchester United have placed Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin on their radar. As well as the Red Devils looking to sign the Ukraine international, they face competition from Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain.

Real Madrid goalkeeperAndriy Lunin.

United added Andre Onana to their ranks in the 2023 summer transfer window, and since his arrival, he has been the club’s number one between the sticks. The Cameroon international has been backed up by Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton, but it appears that INEOS may want to add more competition in that area of the team.

Lunin, who was described as a “hero” by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, has been at Real Madrid since July 2018, when he joined the club from Ukraine side Zorya Lugansk. The 25-year-old has struggled for regular game time since joining the Spanish giants but did feature heavily last season, as he was called upon due to Thibaut Courtois’ injury.

A two time Champions League winner, Lunin may be considered a cheap pickup by the Red Devils – the Ukraine international is said to be on a weekly wage of 54,038 euros, which is roughly £45,000. That’s about £2.3 million per year, so he would be an addition that wouldn’t cost United much in wages, and the 6 foot 3 stopper may think he has more of a chance of ousting Onana than Courtois.
