It's net curtains for South Africa as Mark Boucher rues run-rate exit

Sluggish chase against Bangladesh proves costly, but Boucher proud of team’s revival

Firdose Moonda06-Nov-20213:58

Moody: SA must be feeling robbed

Too few runs, scored too slowly in the early stages of the T20 World Cup cost South Africa a place in the semi-finals, according to coach Mark Boucher. He called their victory over England, and elimination on net run-rate, a “bitter pill to swallow” but recognised the missed opportunities from two matches, in particular, that could have pushed them into the final four.”The first game [against Australia] was tight,” Boucher said. “We just didn’t bat well enough. It was tough, we lost the toss, we batted first and we weren’t 100% sure what a good total was because that was the first game. We looked at getting 160 but we probably needed 130 or 140 to be competitive so we could have maybe done better there.”South Africa scored 118 for 9 in that opener against Australia, and very nearly defended it. Then, they rallied to chase 144 against West Indies, 143 against Sri Lanka and 85 against Bangladesh, but it took them 13.3 overs to get those runs. By contrast, Australia, the team who finished above them on NRR, chased 74 in 6.2 overs against the same opponents. If South Africa had beaten Bangladesh inside eight overs, all other things being equal, they would have leapfrogged Australia. But Boucher explained, it was not as simple as just the numbers. “Chasing a small total against Bangladesh – people can maybe look at that and say we should have gone harder there. That was the intention. But, we lost three wickets on a wicket that was going all over the shop and unfortunately, ifs and buts don’t count now.”Watch cricket live on ESPN+

Although Boucher hinted that having the teams divided into two groups skewed the balance of the tournament, he accepted NRR as the yardstick by which they are measured. “We knew what the rules were before,”he said. “As long as there is clarity around there, you’ve got to play what the rules are. Guys are chatting, it’s not only us, about what a good competition is – where everyone plays everyone. But I’m not here to make those calls. We knew what the rules were. We didn’t pass the test.”Tabraiz Shamsi and Kagiso Rabada celebrate after the former got Jonny Bairstow•AFP/Getty Images

Despite what Boucher ultimately called an unsuccessful campaign “because we are knocked out of a World Cup”, he was heartened by South Africa’s continued improvement over the last few months. Since losing at home to England last year, South Africa have won three successive T20 series and four of their five World Cup games.”We are improving. We can look at the results. Since we were given a directive that it’s not just about getting games of cricket out there, it’s about results as well, before West Indies, guys have played really well and played good cricket,” he said. “Guys have upskilled. We’ve been learning how to play different situations as well and we’ve got a lot of confidence, but it’s not the finished product.”Crucially, Boucher believes South Africa have turned a corner when it comes to crunch situations. “Every game we played was under pressure. That’s one thing we haven’t done well in the past – played big games, pressurised games,” he said. “It’s a young side, we are still developing. We are heading in the right direction. We need a bit of luck and a bit of good fortune to go our way. Hopefully we can put something in the trophy cabinet soon.”Related

Rassie van der Dussen, Kagiso Rabada seal bittersweet consolation win for South Africa

How soon is the question on most South Africans’ minds and the answer is always maybe next time. Under Boucher, who is contracted until the 2023 ODI World Cup, there are two more opportunities, especially as South Africa’s performance at this tournament has likely taken the heat off the incumbent coach.Since Boucher took over in late 2019, South African cricket has been embroiled in drama, including most recently at the Social Justice and Nation-Building hearings, where Boucher was named among those accused of racial discrimination in the past. He submitted a response, although he did not appear at the commission, and, like everyone else, awaits the ombudsman’s report at the end of the month which may include recommendations for the current set-up.Already, South Africa have had the board direct them to all take a knee, and amid the fall-out of Quinton de Kock’s refusal to do so against West Indies, the instructions almost derailed them at this tournament. “It has been tough,” Boucher said. “It’s been tough on this team. We are finding the headlines for the wrong reasons.”Now that South Africa are returning home, to a busy summer that starts with a full series against India, Boucher hopes the headlines will be for the right reasons. “This team is in a very good space,” he added. “They are very strong and together and hopefully that is reflecting in our performances and hopefully people can come and see that for themselves when we are back home.”

Aston Villa eye opportunity as club consider low January bid for £50m star

Aston Villa chiefs are sensing a transfer opportunity as they look to back manager Unai Emery in the transfer market, with one club ready to consider a low January bid for a star who’d usually cost around £50 million.

Aston Villa face Tottenham in near-certain race for top four

Emery’s fairytale stint in charge of Villa has continued into the 2024/25 campaign, with the Midlands giants appearing near-certainties to be contending for a place in the Premier League’s top four yet again.

They’ve also made an impressive start in Europe, beating German heavyweights Bayern Munich 1-0 on a historic night at Villa Park, whilst also clinching victories against Serie A side Bologna and Switzerland’s Young Boys.

While it is still very early days, with Villa to play their tenth Premier League game of the season against fellow potential European contenders Tottenham, it is pretty safe to say that Emery’s side are favourites to be up there with England’s elite once again.

Villa travel to north London on Sunday for a tough test at Spurs, who are looking to bounce back from their disappointing 1-0 defeat at Crystal Palace last weekend. They’ve been very inconsistent this season – winning four, losing four and drawing one – while Emery’s only top-flight defeat so far came at the hands of title-chasing Arsenal back in August.

However, despite their contrasting records, Emery insists that Tottenham are favourites to beat Villa on Sunday.

“Tottenham is playing very well and they deserved more points than they have now,” said Emery ahead of Villa’s trip to Spurs.

“They beat Manchester City at home, playing with lots of players who will play on Sunday. Their style and idea is so, so strong. They have individually brilliant players. They signed Solanke and he is giving them a lot more ways to attack and be stronger than last year.

“They are the favourites in front of us for the season and for the match on Sunday. We are competing and we are really being confident, how we are doing our way. We even lost last year against them. We are trying to use a stronger structure to face them on Sunday. We are very excited and motivated, our fans, myself, the coaches, players and the club how we are increasing our level to be contenders with Tottenham, City, Chelsea and Newcastle. Competing with them to be in the top seven, top six or top five.”

Aston Villa sense opportunity to sign Loic Bade from Sevilla

In the background, transfer chief Monchi and NSWE are looking at ways to improve Emery’s squad with potential new additions.

Some reports claim Villa are prepared to bid for La Liga sensation Christantus Uche in January, while it appears that another Spanish top-flight star has earned admiring glances from Birmingham.

As per a media source from Spain, Sevilla defender Loic Bade is on Monchi’s agenda. The club wish to strengthen their central defensive options and it is believed that Aston Villa see Bade as an “opportunity” to bolster their defence for both now and the seasons ahead.

It is also claimed that, despite his mainstay status at Sevilla, they could sell for a “low” January offer compared to his £50 million release clause.

Barcelona ready move for £375k-p/w Man City star Pep called "unbelievable"

Barcelona are ready to go all out to sign one of Manchester City’s stars in 2025 amid ongoing uncertainty over the future of the Etihad club.

What next for Manchester City?

Having dominated English football for much of the last decade, Manchester City and Pep Guardiola made it a historic four consecutive Premier League title wins as they beat Arsenal to top spot on the final day of the season. Now, they are looking to make it a record fifth straight title, and have started the season strongly. As it stands, they sit just a point behind Liverpool, level on points with Arsenal after seven games and unbeaten thus far this season.

That has been achieved largely without Ballon d’Or candidate and arguably best midfielder in world football Rodri, who is set to be sidelined for the remainder of the campaign with a knee injury sustained in his side’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium.

But beyond this season, the future for Manchester City remains unclear; Guardiola is out of contract this summer as thing stand, and recent reports have both linked him with the vacant England job and also a potential one-year extension at Manchester City.

It leaves City in limbo just days after it was announced that Txiki Begiristain would be stepping down as Director of Football for the club at the end of the season, to be replaced by Hugo Viana from Sporting CP.

Not even a season-ending injury could stop Manchester City’s Rodri from claiming football’s biggest individual prize.

ByBarney Lane Oct 28, 2024

Then, there are the 115 charges levelled at the club by the Premier League, a case which remains ongoing but from which a conclusion is expected at the beginning of 2025. It has left clubs circling around the Etihad, and Barcelona are one of them.

Barcelona to go all out for Erling Haaland

Now Barcelona are looking to go all out to sign Erling Haaland in 2025 as they look for a long term replacement for Robert Lewandowski, reports claim. It has previously been claimed that Haaland is unhappy in Manchester, and sees a move to Spain as a natural step in his career, but one would do well to trust such reports in the Spanish media.

A move to Real Madrid is now off the table following the signings of both Endrick and Kylian Mbappé, which leaves Barcelona as the only other logical move should he wish to move to Spain. And according to reports in Spain [via Football Transfers], Barcelona are keen to go ‘all out’ to try and sign the Norwegian goalscoring phenomenon next summer.

Having won the Premier League golden boot in each of the last two seasons, Haaland has already grabbed 10 Premier League goals this time around and leads the way once more.

Guardiola is understandably a huge fan of his treble-winning striker, hailing him “unbelievable” after a hat-trick against West Ham earlier in the season: “He is so reliable on penalties. Assist for the second, fantastic for the third. Last season he struggled a lot, especially at the beginning. He felt tired and niggles most of the time. This time, with the rest with no Euros, he has arrived with a good vibe. The numbers are unbelievable.”

Taking home a massive £375,000 a week at the Etihad as a base salary, with a further £475,000 in bonuses, Haaland still has three years left to run on his contract in Manchester.

With Barcelona having struggled to register free transfers, let alone pay significant transfer fees in recent seasons, the striker’s reported massive £173m release clause is likely to be beyond even the Catalan giants, let alone the mammoth wages he would demand. Though a deal looks unlikely, much could hinge on the outcome of Manchester City’s court case.

Update on Anthony Gordon’s injury before Newcastle vs Chelsea in EFL Cup

Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon missed his side’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea on Sunday afternoon, but will he be fit for the midweek EFL Cup clash with the Blues?

Newcastle preparing for another Chelsea clash

Eddie Howe’s team were beaten at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League, with their in-form opponents always feeling like they would just have too much for them. Newcastle certainly didn’t disgrace themselves against Chelsea, equalising through Alexander Isak in the first half and threatening to make it 2-2 late on in the game, but they ultimately didn’t quite have enough quality to leave west London with a point to show for their efforts.

No sooner have the Magpies played the Blues than they meet again in midweek, with Howe’s men hosting Enzo Maresca’s side in the fourth round of the EFL Cup on Wednesday evening. Newcastle’s long wait for a trophy has been well-documented and victory at St James’ Park would put them into the quarter-finals.

The Premier League side have been having to get by without a number of key players recently, from Kieran Trippier to Gordon, and there has now been an update on the fitness of the latter, who has become such an influential performer out on the left wing.

Howe gives Gordon injury update for Newcastle

Speaking after the Chelsea game in the league, Howe confirmed that Newcastle star Gordon will undergo a scan on Monday, in order to find out the severity of his groin issue: “He felt his groin [on Saturday] in training. We hope it’s not serious but he’ll go for a scan probably tomorrow.”

This has to be considered a worry for the Magpies, with a scan potentially revealing damage to the England international, therefore ruling him out of action for some time. Even if nothing serious is found, it would still be a surprise if Gordon was back in the fold for the Chelsea cup game, but hopefully being available for Saturday’s visit of Arsenal in the league instead.

The 23-year-old’s influence was highlighted at Stamford Bridge, with Newcastle not carrying enough attacking threat without him, as both Harvey Barnes and Miguel Almiron struggled to have a positive impact and link with Isak.

Gordon is clearly admired and cherished by his Magpies teammates, too, with Bruno Guimaraes saying of him earlier this year: “He has been unbelievable, always scoring and giving some assists. He is a lovely guy as well, I am very happy for him and hope he can get some minutes for England. For me to play against him will be massive for both of us and the club as well.”

Gordon is going to be such an important figure for Newcastle for years to come, having only recently signed a new long-term deal, and his return could coincide with the Magpies’ season turning around for the better, hopefully sooner rather than later.

Kai Havertz’s fine form last season seemingly prompted manager Mikel Arteta and Edu to eventually keep faith with the German and not bring in a new number nine towards the end of the summer window, but it is believed Arsenal could look to sign a partner for Havertz next year instead.

Arsenal had an offer rejected for RB Leipzig sensation Benjamin Sesko, with the Gunners making a proposal to sign the Slovenian alongside both Man United and Chelsea, but he snubbed their advances and put pen to paper on a contract extension instead.

Arsenal are considering a 2025 approach for Sesko, though, considering the player has a “gentleman’s agreement” that he can leave Leipzig within the next two years.

Sesko isn’t their only rumoured striker target, but Edu’s widespread reported attempts to tempt him to the Emirates earlier this year hints he must be pretty high on their agenda.

Meanwhile, the prospect of adding another defensive midfielder is also on the cards. Versatile Italy international starlet Samuele Ricci is being targeted by Arsenal for January, according to some media sources, with the Torino ace turning heads at Man City too, amid their search for a Rodri alternative.

Both Thomas Partey and Jorginho could be leaving for free in 2025, as their contracts expire next summer, so Arsenal need to think about long-term solutions for their midfield as well.

There are reports that Arsenal could reward Partey with a new deal after his fine start to 2024/2025, but until the Ghanaian puts pen to paper, Arteta will still be in need of more options next year.

Jacob Ramsey could join Arsenal in January

Now, as per Spanish media reports, Aston Villa starlet Jacob Ramsey is a target for the Gunners.

Unai Emery’s side are potentially open to offers for the 23-year-old, either next summer or in the winter window, so the prospect of him leaving in January is a real possibility.

It is believed Arsenal are eyeing a move to sign Ramsey from Villa, alongside both north London rivals Tottenham and Newcastle United in England, while Serie A champions Inter Milan also take a firm interest in the Englishman.

His growing market value is making NSWE and Emery consider a sale in the near future, with a £50 million price tag on his head if Villa do decide to sell their “all-round” homegrown midfield ace (Gabriel Agbonlahor).

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

After extensively crisscrossing the British Isles, Tuchel must be already working on a tactical plan to get the best out of a star-studded England squad. Palmer, Bellingham, Anthony Gordon, Jack Grealish, Phil Foden, Noni Madueke and, of course, England skipper Harry Kane will all be vying for a starting spot. And Poyet believes the manager will struggle to fit in all the big names at the same time, with several contenders for the No.10 spot including Palmer, Foden and Bellingham.

  • WHAT POYET SAID

“I’m sure Thomas Tuchel will already have an idea in his mind about where he wants to play Palmer,” Poyet told in an interview with . “But it’s unlucky for England that they have so many good players to play in similar positions; Palmer is up against the likes of Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden for that No.10 position.

“You can’t practically play all of them in the same team – they’ve tried that and they lost the game, so Tuchel knows it doesn’t necessarily work. It’s a shame because they’re all special players. Some people say Palmer and Bellingham can play together, but I’m not so sure. If they were in the same team, training with each other for three months, maybe. But in a national team with three days of training, it’s not as simple.

“It’ll be fascinating to see what Tuchel decides to do, whether he starts both of them or leaves one on the bench. It’s not an easy decision to leave such a special player out of the starting eleven!”

Leicestershire chair Mehmooda Duke quits in blow to ECB's diversity drive

The ECB has been forced to postpone the publication of its plan to improve diversity in English cricket, amid the abrupt departure on Thursday of one of the only two non-white chairs of a first-class county.Mehmooda Duke, who was also the only female in such a high-profile county role, and one of only three female board members from black or minority ethnic backgrounds, had been due to step down at the end of March to take up a new role as High Sheriff for Leicestershire. However, she has now chosen to depart with immediate effect, stating that “cricket had been torn apart by recent events”, and calling for “fresh leadership at national level” – a choice of words that places further pressure on the ECB chief executive Tom Harrison, following his unconvincing display at last week’s parliamentary hearing into the Azeem Rafiq racism scandal.Leicestershire’s vice-chairman, Jonathan Duckworth, is set to become interim chairman until a long-term replacement is identified.”Cricket has been torn apart by recent events and I am deeply saddened by the hurt felt by individuals within our game,” Duke said in her statement. “With fresh leadership at national level and with a determination to learn from the recent past and move forward, I hope that racism and discrimination will be expunged from the dressing rooms, the fields, and the game as a whole, allowing us to celebrate the diversity which makes cricket and sport in this country so great.”I wish all of my colleagues on the board and across the network, the players, staff and the community teams, all the very best for the future,” she added. “I thank the Members, supporters, and sponsors for their unwavering loyalty to the club and especially during some difficult times.”The news emerged as the ECB were forced to concede that their response to cricket’s racism allegations, drafted at an all-stakeholders meeting at the Kia Oval last Friday, was “not quite there”, having originally been expected to be finalised by Wednesday.Once the final wording of the plan has been agreed, it is expected to include a commitment to a 30 percent boardroom representation for women and “representative ethnicities” at all first-class and national county clubs, as well as ongoing diversity training for all players, staff, umpires and coaches.Meanwhile, Azeem Rafiq has met with a Holocaust survivor at the Jewish Museum in London, in the wake of his apology for anti-Semitic messages that he sent as a 19-year-old in 2011.Rafiq, who is facing an ECB investigation for his comments – which included the suggestion that the Derbyshire player, Atif Sheikh, had been unwilling to spend money on a meal out because “he is a jew” – met with Ruth Barnett, who escaped Nazi Germany in 1939, as well as Steve Silverman from the Campaign Against Antisemitism. In his apology, Rafiq had said: “I am incredibly angry at myself and I apologise to the Jewish community and everyone who is rightly offended by this,” and has committed himself to education on the issue of anti-Semitism.

Internal talks: Newcastle want £40m Gordon clone who "cannot be stopped"

Newcastle United’s chequered form this season matches their black-and-white stripes, but there’s no question that Eddie Howe is seeking to turn St. James’ Park toward the limelight.

Having tasted defeat against Chelsea in the Premier League just over a week ago, the Magpies have responded with ferocious intent, trouncing the Blues in the Carabao Cup before holding Arsenal on Saturday in a masterful home victory in the top flight.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe

There’s a long road to walk, but the signs are promising, with United piecing themselves back together after the injury-hit issues of last season – and that’s in spite of a frustrating summer transfer window that failed to see goals achieved.

Just imagine if Newcastle hit the nail on the head in the market next year.

Newcastle's search for a new forward

According to The Athletic’s Chris Waugh, Newcastle are hot on the trail of Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo, who has emerged as one of the most clinical forwards in the Premier League this season.

As per Waugh, responding to a question from a supporter in a Q & A, talks have been held within the club regarding the Magpies’ interest in the winger, with there undoubted ‘admiration’ for the 25-year-old at St James’ Park.

That said, Waugh also added that is yet to be seen whether Mbeumo – who has a mooted price tag of around £40m – is actually the first-choice target for Paul Mitchell and co, despite having confirmed himself to be one of the hottest attacking commodities in the division of late.

Why Bryan Mbeumo would be perfect for Newcastle

While Mbeumo certainly wouldn’t come cheap if Mitchell is to press on with a move, Newcastle are hardly averse to forking out a big sum for the right target. In August, at the backend of the market, a £50m bid was launched in Nottingham Forest’s direction for Anthony Elanga, though this was flatly rejected.

It would be fair to guess that United would be content with paying a similar sum for a player like Mbeumo, not least because the versatile forward is a more potent and incisive player.

Last season, The Athletic’s Jay Harris remarked that Mbeumo “cannot be stopped” in front of goal, with injuries the only thing that could prevent the 25-year-old from enjoying prominence in the Premier League.

This term, he’s been a different beast entirely. A certain striker named Erling Haaland – you might have heard of him – is the only player with more Premier League goals than Mbeumo in 2024/25.

Mbeumo actually ranks among the top 6% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for goals scored (0.54) per 90, as per FBref, which bears testament to the man’s prolific consistency. It’s something that could go down a treat on the Newcastle right flank, alternate to Anthony Gordon on the left.

Mbeumo is also one of the most accurate strikers in the Premier League, with only Chris Wood, Nottingham Forest’s goal machine, hitting the inside netting with greater accuracy in 2024/25 – and he’s in the form of his career.

It’s a deal that Newcastle must throw the kitchen sink at completing, with analyst Ben Mattinson even remarking that “Gordon, Isak and Mbeumo would be one of the best attacks in the league.”

Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak

The forwards would come together in a melting pot of attacking skillsets that could indeed bear major dividends for Howe’s project, reviving the fluency that has been on show for much of his tenure.

Especially when considering that, stylistically, he’d be sure to dovetail right into the Tynside system. FBref record that Gordon is Mbeumo’s most comparably-performing player in the Premier League this season, with both wingers producing prolific results and utilising their pace and directness.

Gordon holds slight advantages across a number of key metrics, but both players are in fine fettle and earning their stripes as some of the finest forwards performing on English shores.

Jacob Murphy and Miguel Almiron are the current options jockeying for a focal role on the right flank, neither are exactly plays of the highest class, capable of leading Newcastle to the uppermost echelons of the Premier League.

They are industrious wingers, to be sure, but, conversely, Mbeumo’s demonstrable scoring ability makes him a tailor-made fit to perch on the right wing.

Mbeumo, moreover, is producing the kind of athletic and energetic level of performance that it befitting of a team like Newcastle, challenging for the top. As per Sofascore, he has averaged 1.7 key passes, 5.3 ball recoveries and 4.0 successful duels per game in the Premier League, revealing that he is far more than a mere sharpshooter.

Ultimately, Newcastle failed to achieve their goals in the transfer market this summer and are thus struggling to meet the lofty expectations that have been set through Howe’s previous brilliance.

Even so, Newcastle are fighting valiantly for a place at the top of the table – and have advanced to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup too.

There’s something missing, and that something might just be a player like Mbeumo. It’s time to bite down and pay Brentford the money required to bring him to St. James’ Park.
