Ben Stokes: England approach means opposing teams will now 'fear' third innings

“They have to concentrate on how we’re going to play, and they’re worried about that”

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Jul-2022England’s efforts to “rewrite” how Test cricket is played will leave opposition teams fearful of how to approach the third innings, Ben Stokes said after his team pulled of a record chase of 378 against India at Edgbaston, scoring the runs at 4.93.Stokes chose to bowl first after winning the toss, going against Test match convention, on the grounds that England had hunted down three fourth-innings chases between 277 and 299 against New Zealand in a row. His confidence was justified when England completed their highest successful chase on the fifth morning, coasting home by seven wickets despite having conceded a first-innings deficit of 132.Related

Brendon McCullum had said after the 3-0 series win against New Zealand that he wanted his players to go “too far” in their efforts to find out where the line was, and Stokes joked that he wanted India to get a few more in order to test England further.”Don’t know where it [the line] is,” Stokes told Sky Sports. “There was a bit of me that almost wanted them to get 450, to see what we’d do.”I said yesterday [the fourth day] after we finished the day’s play, look at how teams will be viewing us at the moment, that third innings now has become a fourth innings – because they have to concentrate on how we’re going to play, and they’re worried about that. So to be in that position as a team, being feared before they’ve even finished their innings is an unbelievable place to be in. Teams don’t know how to play the third innings, especially when they’ve got a lead.”Stokes said that the instruction from the dressing room was “not just go out there and blaze it, there are some simple things we do keep close as a team”, and said that he and McCullum had placed an emphasis on enjoyment rather than worrying about results.”It’s been the most fun five weeks I’ve had in my career so far,” Stokes said. “I don’t think everyone can understand what’s happened here. When you get given clarity in what you want to do and what you want to achieve, and think about bigger than results, it makes everything a lot easier. It takes away the external pressure of what international sport can throw at you. When you know what you want to go out there and do, it makes everything a lot more simple.”For the third Test in a row, tickets were given away free on the final day as crowds flocked to see what this new England team is capable of, and Stokes admitted to being surprised at how quickly fortunes had changed under his captaincy, following a run of one win in 17 Tests dating back to early 2021.”We are trying to rewrite how Test cricket is being played, in England especially,” he said. “All the different plans that we put together over the last four or five weeks, for every different situations is something we’ll look to carry forward. It’s not always about bowling top of off or drying up, it’s how are we going to take wickets? That’s what you need to do as a bowling attack, take ten wickets.Alex Lees played his part in giving England a positive start•AFP/Getty Images”We know that we want to give new life to Test cricket, and the way that we go about it, and the support that we’ve received over the last five weeks has been incredible. It’s amazing, in such a short space of time, we feel like we are bringing a new set of fans to the game. Inspiring the next generation is what we want to do, this game at the moment is bigger than results for us, it’s about people who come in to represent England in the future, guys who come into the dressing room after. We want to leave a mark on Test cricket.”He also acknowledged a debt to England’s outgoing white-ball captain, Eoin Morgan, who oversaw a similar revival in limited-overs cricket.”Baz and Eoin are really good mates, I spent a lot of time under Eoin’s captaincy and I’ve taken a lot of his messaging and how he wanted the team in one-day cricket to go forward and I’ve brought that mentality and ethos into this Test environment and everybody’s responded so well to it,” Stokes said. “It’s not just me and Baz, you’ve got to get that response from everyone else and they just flew into it head on.”Both Stokes and Joe Root paid tribute to the “sublime” opening partnership between Alex Lees and Zak Crawley, which laid the platform for England’s fourth-innings charge. Lees has been a player transformed from his debut series in the Caribbean, and set the tone with a 44-ball half-century, while Crawley began to repay some of the faith invested in him with 46 – his highest score of the summer.”Huge credit to the two lads at the top,” Root said. “The way they set the platform, the way they shifted pressure straight back on to India and smashed that new ball around on a wicket that was doing a bit was incredible batting because it made the work we had to do after that a lot easier. It was a sublime partnership against a world-class attack.Stokes added: “Jonny and Rooty are going to get the plaudits and rightly so, two amazing knocks. But a run chase, you set the precedent by what your two openers do, and what they did there was absolutely phenomenal. Watching that partnership being put together in the manner that they did it was incredible and put the momentum back to us. Playing the way they did against Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami was incredible to watch.”

Ryan Reynolds & Rob McElhenney told why Wrexham 'won't survive' in the Championship as Hollywood co-owners sent 'lot of surgery' warning

Former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood says Wrexham's story in recent years under Reynolds and McElhenney has been "amazing" but they would need to invest heavily in the squad if they get promoted to the Championship this season.

    WHAT TIM SHERWOOD SAID

He told OLBG: "It’ll be harder for Wrexham to go back to back [to reach the Premier League] than Birmingham, obviously the fanbase is a little bit bigger there so they can spend more money. But it's been an amazing story for Wrexham. Everyone's been following it. They're famous in the United States because of the documentary and it's been great for them. There is a lot of surgery they’d need to be able to do to survive in the Championship, to their players and the playing squad. Whether you can make that many changes and be successful is another question, but they’re ticking every box at the moment, so you wouldn't rule it out. It's a Cinderella story, and they've got the right people involved."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Wrexham sit second in League One and are aiming for an historic third straight promotion in as many years. They are locked in an intense battle with Wycombe Wanderers for the final automatic promotion spot, with Birmingham City on the cusp of the title. If Reynolds and McElhenney's side do go up again, their task will get even harder, though, with the Hollywood co-owners having made no secret of their ultimate ambition to reach the Premier League.

What sources have said about Chelsea possibly signing £50m star in January

A respected reporter from The Telegraph has shared what “contacts” have told him about the prospect of Chelsea signing a Premier League star in January.

Enzo Maresca shares January transfer update at Chelsea

The west Londoners have been reliably tipped to bring in a new centre-back this month, and were backed to do so long before Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile succumbed to injury.

Very reliable Chelsea reporter Simon Phillips reported at the beginning of December that signing a new central defender was the club’s top priority for this month, with the potential addition of a centre-back taking precedent over their chase for a new striker and left-back.

The likes of Fabrizio Romano have backed Chelsea’s serious interest in re-signing Marc Guehi in January as well, even if it won’t be an easy deal to pull off, which makes the latest update from manager Enzo Maresca quite surprising.

Speaking in his latest pre-match press conference, the Italian moved to downplay suggestions that his side are in dire need of another centre-half – perhaps looking to divert attention and pressure off Chelsea transfer chiefs.

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca

“At this moment I think we are OK,” said Maresca on Chelsea signing another centre-back before January.

“The timing [for Fofana] is between 12 and 16 weeks, which is three months, and the season could be finished. If he can come back early, we will all be happy. [But] we have Benoit, who is close to being back, we have Josh who is doing well, Axel and Levi who can all do well in the position.”

Furthermore, Chelsea’s head coach refused to rule out a new January signing – but insisted they must be of the right calibre.

“My message is quite clear since we first started here – we will only sign players to improve what we have and upgrade the squad,” said Maresca on January transfers.

“If we sign players just for signing them, it isn’t worth it, so if we do something, it is because we think that we are improving and updating the team.”

Chelsea are fans of Bournemouth star Illia Zabarnyi

In the build-up to the window, Chelsea were reliably linked with a move for Bournemouth’s Illia Zabarnyi – and while Maresca says they’re not in need of a centre-back right now, you could make a very good case that the Ukrainian would be an upgrade on their current options.

Unlike defensive partners Dean Huijsen and Marcos Senesi, who have rotated in and out of the starting eleven, the 22-year-old has been an ever-present in Andoni Iraola’s backline – starting all 20 of their Premier League games and averaging more clearances per 90 than any other Cherries player (WhoScored).

This has resulted in Bournemouth putting a £50 million price tag on his head, but according to The Telegraph’s Matt Law, Chelsea signing Zabarnyi this month isn’t seen as possible right now.

Speaking on the London is Blue podcast this week, Law said (via TBR): “Look, I’ll tell you that my contacts, I’ve thrown names such as Zabarnyi at Bournemouth at them. I’ve been told Chelsea like him, but don’t see a deal being done for him this month.

“The Barcelona defender, is it Araujo? I’ve thrown him at someone and been told, yeah, we’ve looked at him, but don’t see us doing that one this month.

“So I don’t have the names exactly on the list, but there seems to be a list.”

Zabarnyi cost Bournemouth just £23 million to sign from Dynamo Kyiv in January 2023, with his value doubling after an impressive two years in England.

Man City begin talks to sign £50m star who’s a perfect player for Marmoush

Manchester City have been largely disappointing in the 2024/25, with any hopes of retaining the Premier League title for yet another season near enough over after 21 matches.

Pep Guardiola’s side currently occupy sixth place, already 12 points behind current leaders Liverpool, with Arne Slot’s men also having a game in hand over the Citizens.

Their terrible form between October and December has given the side a huge task to resurrect their title ambitions, winning just once in 13 matches across all competitions.

Such a drop has seen the hierarchy back the boss in the transfer window, with numerous deals edging closer to completion – including that of Lens centre-back Abdukodir Khusanov, with Fabrizio Romano giving the here we go for his move to England.

After the signing of the Uzbekistan international, the hierarchy looks set to target another player who could feature alongside the youngster after the closure of the window in a few weeks time.

Man City make contact to land PL star this month

According to I News, Man City have initiated talks with Milos Kerkez’s agents after his impressive start to the campaign.

However, they aren’t alone in their pursuit of the Bournemouth star, with Liverpool and Manchester United also in the race for his signature.

Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkez

Despite the interest from City, the report claims that table toppers Liverpool currently lead the running for his services, with Kerkez wanting a move to Anfield.

The interest is no surprise given his form at the Vitality, featuring in every Premier League match of 2024/25, registering one goal and three assists in the process.

The Cherries aren’t said to be planning to offload the 21-year-old, but could entertain offers in the region of £50m for the defender before the end of the window.

He would undoubtedly improve the options at Guardiola’s disposal, helping to mount a second half of the season charge back into the top four, potentially forming an excellent partnership with a fellow new arrival.

Why Kerkez would be perfect for Marmoush at Man City

Eintracht Frankfurt forward Omar Marmoush is said to be close to swapping Germany for England, with journalist Romano stating that personal terms have already been agreed with the Egyptian over a move to the Etihad.

However, the two sides are yet to agree a fee for the 25-year-old who’s already scored 15 times in just 17 league appearances for the Bundesliga outfit.

His goalscoring prowess would inject added quality into the forward line, helping the side create more chances, subsequently improving the ambitions of turning their fortunes around in attacking areas.

Erling Haaland is certainly going to remain as City’s number one striker, with Marmoush likely to play in and around the Norwegian, potentially featuring in a left-sided role – which could see him strike up a partnership with Kerkez should he move to the North West.

Despite being a defender, who’s been dubbed “one of the best left-back prospects” by analyst Ben Mattinson, has started at both ends of the pitch, providing the Egyptian with the ammunition to thrive in England after his big-money move.

£50m may seem to be a huge fee for another player given the recent transfer rumours, but it’s one that would be worthwhile for a youngster who’s able to make an immediate impact in the first team.

Whilst, Liverpool may hold the edge in the race for his signature, it’s crucial that the hierarchy work tirelessly to secure a move for the Hungarian, allowing Marmoush to flourish with his own move to Manchester.

Chelsea could sign their own Omorodion with move for £20m "battering ram"

Chelsea fell further behind Liverpool in the race for the Premier League title on Sunday after they failed to secure all three points against Everton at Goodison Park.

The Blues are now four points behind the Reds, who have a game in hand, at the top of the table after they beat Tottenham Hotspur 6-3 later in the day.

Enzo Maresca’s men will rue missed chances in their draw with Everton on Sunday, as they failed to make the most of the chances that they created.

The Blues had 75% of the possession on Merseyside and created three ‘big chances’ in the game, but failed to find the back of the net with those opportunities.

Nicolas Jackson missed two of those big chances and has only scored one goal in his last three Premier League outings, missing three ‘big chances’ in that time.

Chelsea wanted to sign another natural centre-forward to come in and compete with the Senegal international in the summer transfer window, but they ultimately failed to bring in another senior option in that position before it slammed shut.

Chelsea's pursuit of Samu Omorodion

One player who was a target for the Blues in the summer was Atletico Madrid striker Samu Omorodion, now going by Samu Aghehowa, and they had agreed a deal for him in August.

Sky Sports reported that Chelsea agreed a £34.5m deal to sign the young attacker from the Spanish giants, before a contractual dispute caused the move to fall through.

The Premier League side did not opt to find a solution to that dispute and the Spain U21 international eventually completed a move to Portuguese giants Porto instead, and his form this season may make the Blues regret their decision.

Aghehowa, 20, has plundered an outstanding 16 goals in 20 appearances in all competitions for his new club, including two goals in one game against Manchester United in the Europa League.

This impressive form comes off the back of his return of eight goals in LaLiga on loan with Alaves from Atletico Madrid in the 2023/24 campaign, which shows that he has taken great strides in his development since making the move to Portugal.

As you can see in the table above, the Spanish marksman has been in prolific form in the Portuguese top-flight, with a staggering 11 goals from just 5.45 xG.

Jackson has missed as many ‘big chances’ in his last three appearances in the Premier League as Aghehowa has in the entire league season so far, which suggests that the Blues may have missed out on having a more clinical centre-forward option to select.

Whilst they have already squandered their chance to bring the former Atletico Madrid starlet to Stamford Bridge, Maresca could find his own version of Omorodion, now Aghehowa, by signing one of the club’s reported targets ahead of the January transfer window.

Chelsea eyeing up Premier League forward

TEAMtalk recently reported that Chelsea want to sign a new number nine to come in and compete with Jackson for the starting spot ahead of the second half of the season.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The outlet added that Ipswich Town marksman Liam Delap, who only joined the Tractor Boys from Manchester City for £20m in the summer, is high up on their list of potential recruits.

It stated that the club have held talks with the striker’s representatives to discuss a possible move to Stamford Bridge for the England U21 international, whose agents are thinking about his long-term future at the top level amid a relegation battle for his current side.

TEAMtalk revealed that Ipswich are keen to keep hold of their star striker in the January transfer window, but Delap is interested in a move to Chelsea and would be open to the switch if a fee is agreed between the two teams.

It also claimed that Manchester City have a buy-back clause, after selling him in the summer, but that they are unlikely to exercise it in January, which could give the Blues a clear run at the 21-year-old star.

Why Chelsea should sign Liam Delap

Maresca must, now, push the board to secure a deal for the £20m-rated centre-forward because Chelsea could finally land their own version of Aghehowa by swooping for the Englishman.

The Spanish marksman was not an outstanding goalscorer on loan at Alaves, scoring eight league goals, in LaLiga last season, prior to the club’s interest in him, but has now burst into life on the big stage with Porto.

Similarly, Delap is a young striker who has not produced Erling Haaland or Viktor Gyokeres-esque goalscoring levels, but he has shown plenty of promising signs in a struggling Ipswich side.

As you can see in the table above, the Ipswich sensation has been efficient with the chances that have come his way in the Premier League this term, scoring six times from just 4.41 xG in a team that is battling against relegation from the division.

Delap, who was described as a “battering ram” by Opta Analyst on X, also has the ability to create opportunities for himself, as shown in the clip below.

The 21-year-old’s form at youth level for Manchester City suggests that the potential is there for him to explode in a similar way to Aghehowa, if he joins a big team that can consistently put him in good positions to make things happen in the final third.

He scored a staggering 11 goals in 17 games at U18 level and 35 goals in 36 matches for their U21 side, combining for a return of 47 goals in 53 appearances overall.

Delap is now starting to realise some of that potential at first-team level, outperforming his xG in the Premier League, and Chelsea should look to offer him the chance to join a top side that can create chances for him on a consistent basis.

Yorkshire’s Adam Lyth has been suspended from bowling in ECB competitions following an independent assessment of his bowling action conducted at Loughborough University. The bowling action of Lyth, who is currently playing for Northern Superchargers in the Hundred, was reported by umpires David Millns and Neil Mallender, who were standing in the Vitality Blast semi-final between Yorkshire and Lancashire at Edgbaston on July 16.Subsequent assessment found that the elbow extension in Lyth’s bowling action exceeded the 15-degree threshold as defined in the Regulations.Lyth is ineligible to bowl in ECB competitions until he is able to pass an independent re-assessment of his bowling action.Lyth bowled only a single over of offspin in Yorkshire’s defeat and only two overs in the 2022 Blast, so neither Yorkshire nor Superchargers are likely to be overly disrupted by the ruling. The suspension follows the process set out in the ECB’s Regulations for the Review of Bowlers Reported with a Suspected Illegal Bowling Action.

Ben Geddes' efforts come to naught as Tom Price triumphs in breathless finale

Surrey’s rookie skipper left with frustration as Gloucestershire keep hopes alive

ECB Reporters Network19-Aug-2022Tom Price was the tail-end hero with 38 not out from 34 balls as Gloucestershire pulled off a breathless two-wicket Royal London Cup victory against Surrey at the Kia Oval.Ben Geddes, Surrey’s 21-year-old Royal London Cup captain, had done his best to inspire his team by scoring 71 in Surrey’s 292 for 9, running out Tom Smith with a direct hit on the bowlers’ stumps during a tense finish and also juggling his rookie bowling attack with skill. But fast bowler Price, who came in at No 8 with Gloucestershire seemingly making a mess of a chase that had initially looked well on course, kept his head in an unbroken ninth wicket stand of 42 with Paul van Meekeren.Price pulled the winning four off Matt Dunn to clinch a win, with 2.3 overs to spare, that is Gloucestershire’s fourth Group A victory and keeps alive their hope of qualification for the knock-out stages.Earlier, Jack Taylor had followed up his 3 for 38 with five sixes in a 46-ball 51, but Gloucestershire kept losing wickets at vital times as a crowd of more than 3,500 lapped up the entertainment in warm sunshine.Related

Taylor’s seven overs of leg breaks contributed to 34 overs of spin bowled by Gloucestershire, with Pakistan international Zafar Gohar not conceding a single boundary in his ten overs. Gohar also bowled five of those overs in the first powerplay, having Ryan Patel held on the deep square leg ropes for five and, in the end, impressing with 1 for 35.Gloucestershire’s chase did not start well, with Ben Wells bowled off stump for 12 by a beauty from Dunn and Australian Test left-hander Marcus Harris chopping into his stumps against Tom Lawes. But, from 34 for 2, they counter-attacked through James Bracey and Ben Charlesworth, who added 61 in nine overs with some sparkling strokeplay.Six of Bracey’s first seven scoring shots were fours, including extra cover driven and forced offside boundaries from the second and third balls he faced, from Lawes. On 34, however, Bracey lifted his 25th ball to cover off Cameron Steel’s leg-spin and, on 49, Charlesworth chipped a return catch to Yousef Majid, Surrey’s 18-year-old slow left armer, just out of Cranleigh School.Majid was then struck for three sixes in four balls by Taylor but Gloucestershire’s progress was checked when 21-year-old Oli Price, having batted commandingly to reach 45 from 33 balls with eight fours, was strangled down the legside by seamer Nick Kimber.Gohar made a useful 30 before reverse-sweeping Majid to short third man, and Taylor struck further legside sixes off Lawes and Majid before holing out to deep midwicket in the 39th over. When Smith was run out by Geddes in the next over, the game was in the balance at 252 for 8 – but Price and Van Meekeren were equal to the task in hand.Surrey’s innings was built upon a 102-run second wicket stand in 17 overs between Geddes and Steel, and then a further partnership of 51 for the third wicket by Geddes and Josh Blake. But that initial momentum stalled when Van Meekeren had Steel caught at the wicket for a fine 54-ball 61 with one that bounced and Oli Price’s off spin then dismissed both Geddes and Blake (31) during his excellent seven-over spell of 2 for 34 from the Vauxhall End.Smith’s left-arm spin accounted for both Nico Reifer, brilliantly caught and bowled with a diving left-handed effort for 11, and Sheridon Gumbs, who on 17 was unfortunate to pick out Wells at short third man with a sweetly-hit reverse sweep.Suddenly, 181 for 2 had become 222 for 6 in 11 overs of struggle against the two spinners and it took Lawes’ third successive Royal London Cup half-century to pull Surrey up to a defendable total.Lawes flipped Van Meekeren for an extraordinary six to fine leg when the Dutch international fast bowler was reintroduced for the 45th over, and then produced a similarly cheeky stroke to the next ball to flick it to fine third man for four.Kimber managed a few meaty blows before skying Taylor to square cover on 17 and Gloucestershire’s skipper – taking on the responsibility of bowling three death overs – then dived to his right to send back Conor McKerr for 2 with a smart caught and bowled.Lawes swatted Van Meekeren over deep midwicket for his second six and then reverse-slapped Taylor for four to reach his fifty in the final over before, on 50 from 40 balls, mis-hitting to short third man where Van Meekeren ran in to take a good tumbling catch.
