Classic Moshiri: Everton rejected global star for £3m, now he's worth £233m

Everton are on the up with David Moyes at the helm, but the road to success under the Scotsman’s wing is paved with the mishaps of recent years at Goodison Park.

It’s been a long journey since Moyes left Everton to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United in 2013, and while there have been plenty of low points, the future is indeed bright.

Everton are ready to strengthen in the transfer market this summer, but new owners, The Friedkin Group, will be pleased that the new manager has hit the ground running, nine matches undefeated in the Premier League.

Everton will need to spend though, and hopefully retain the services of their most valuable players.

Everton's most valuable players in 2025

TFG’s successful takeover from Farhad Moshiri was met with universal relief and excitement from those of a Toffees persuasion, ending years of painstaking strife.

Everton majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri

Dysfunction reigned for rudderless Everton as they fell away from their comparatively secure spot in the upper end of the Premier League, enduring several seasons of drama as they escaped the relegation zone and preserved their top-flight status.

However, Moshiri did oversee some positivity on the transfer front. Jarrad Branthwaite is the club’s most valuable player, worth £75m, and given that he was purchased from League Two club Carlisle United for just £1m in 2020, this is quite the success story.

He’s not the only Everton player worth a pretty, though. Iliman Ndiaye joined from Marseille for a £15m fee in July 2024 and has been a bright spark right through the campaign, Everton’s joint-top scorer this year with goals and utterly breathtaking in his slick and skilful movements.

Data analyst Ben Mattinson called him a “relentless forward” and said “he could be at least a regular squad player in every Premier League team.”

This is indeed the case. While exact figures haven’t surfaced pertaining to Ndiaye’s new market value, there’s every possibility that he could reach a bracket somewhere near Branthwaite down the line, such is his capacity to impress.

Saying all this, Moshiri did endure a few howlers in his time – and none costlier than when he blew the chance to sign one of the world’s most valuable players for a pittance.

You could say it was the Iranian businessman’s biggest error.

When Everton fumbled the most valuable player in the world

Everton have endured their fair share of transfer misfires over the years, but there’s little question the matter in question here is the pick of the rotten bunch.

One of the greatest currently doing it on the European scene, Moshiri and his Everton chiefs must still rue the day that they opted against signing Erling Haaland while he was in his footballing infancy.

Manchester City's ErlingHaalandcelebrates scoring their first goal

The 24-year-old is a phenomenon, boasting a predatory instinct unlike anything the Premier League has seen before, not in this clinical consistency.

Winning the Premier League title in each of his first two seasons with the Sky Blues, Haaland has rewritten the striker’s script, hailed for his “unique” ability by his manager Pep Guardiola.

One that got away

The transfers that nearly happened but never did. This article is part of Football FanCast’s One That Got Away series.

When Guardiola’s affluent outfit activated the £51m clause in his Borussia Dortmund contract nearly three years ago, it was felt that the dominant English champions were getting one of the world’s best strikers for a bargain fee.

Bargain indeed. Everton must be absolutely kicking themselves for missing the mark with this one, for they had the chance to add the Norwegian machine to their ranks for the paltry fee of £3m.

According to retired England star Aaron Lennon – talking on the Football Daily Podcast – Everton were in with a shout to sign the talented young forward between 2016 and 2018, with former sporting director Steve Walsh even lining up the deal before Moshiri refused to put pen to paper and complete the acquisition.

It’s easy to lambast the decision in hindsight, but you can’t help but feel that this was a monumental howler from the ex-Everton boss. Walsh has even admitted they had a £3m deal lined up. At that time, Haaland was showing prodigious seeds as he posted 20 goals and six assists across 50 matches for Molde.

Given that the superstar, who has hit 138 goal involvements from as many matches in all competitions for City, is now worth £233m – according to CIES Football Observatory, the world’s leading football statisticians – it really is one to make fans cover their faces in dismay.

Not least because he’s the most valuable player in the world. Everton wouldn’t likely have been able to retain Haaland’s services for many years, but they could have banked a significant sum for his signature after enjoying the early fruits of his inimitable striking ability.

Were he to have plyed his trade in the Premier League at an earlier stage, moreover, Haaland’s market value likely would have been distorted, as is often the way for those playing in England’s top flight.

The positive knock-on effect it might have had on Everton’s progress over the past several years is significant; it could have been transformational.

Invariably deadly in the final third, Haaland is one of the most incredible goalscorers you will ever witness on a Premier League pitch. Against Everton alone, he has scored four goals from as many matches, albeit only winning two of his four contests.

Moshiri ultimately sold Everton having been mired in financial and legal problems for an interminable period. His struggle to strike a deal reflected his issues at the very helm.

So much went wrong behind the scenes, but had this deal been brokered, there is every chance that things could have been different, and several years of hurt for Evertonians all around could have been avoided.

£100m England star now keen on joining Chelsea after talks with his agents

A marquee star apparently has one eye on a potential transfer to Chelsea this summer, following some discussions involving Enzo Maresca’s side and the player’s representatives.

What Enzo Maresca thinks about Chelsea's midfield

Maresca, according to reliable journalist Simon Phillips in January, feels as if the club are missing a certain type of profile in the engine room.

ByEmilio Galantini Mar 11, 2025

While Chelsea are expected to significantly invest in a new striker and centre-back this summer, Maresca made his request to the Stamford Bridge hierarchy clear in the winter window when it comes to his desire for a potential new senior midfield star.

Despite links to some big names, including Man United sensation Kobbie Mainoo, Maresca was forced to settle for teenage prospect Mathis Amougou – who joined Chelsea in the latter stages of January from Saint-Étienne.

The Frenchman has made one appearance for Chelsea since then – a seven-minute cameo against Southampton – and he’s expected to head back to Ligue 1 on a season-long loan to sister club Strasbourg for the 2025/2026 season (Fabrizio Romano), so the west Londoners could well return to the market for a new midfield technician.

Reports suggest that Chelsea are considering numerous options. They could even raid Barcelona for some key players, including Frenkie de Jong, who has apparently been offered to Maresca’s side by intermediaries (Graeme Bailey).

Gavi is also on Chelsea’s transfer shortlist, and it is believed they’ve approached the representatives of fellow Catalan midfielder Marc Casado (Cadena SER).

Closer to home, and away from the Camp Nou, chairman Todd Boehly is personally weighing up the prospect of a summer bid for Sunderland star Jobe Bellingham. The Sun reported this week that Chelsea are lining up an offer for Bellingham, but Mainoo is also said to remain firmly in Chelsea’s thinking.

The 19-year-old is one of United’s key stars, but his contract expires in 2027, and he’s currently earning far beneath other big-name players in Ruben Amorim’s squad.

Talks over fresh terms are dragging on, with Chelsea lurking in the background as they monitor his interesting situation at Old Trafford.

Kobbie Mainoo keen on joining Chelsea after contact

According to TEAMtalk, in what could be a boost for Maresca, it is claimed Mainoo is interested in the prospect of joining Chelsea from Man United – following some contact from the Blues with his camp.

The teenager is thought to be a real one to watch this summer, and Chelsea will be one of the main competitors for his signature, even if he is focused on life at United for now.

Amorim’s side are wary of PSR, and there is a hesitance to approve big-money contracts as a result, but this stance could force some of their most pivotal assets to ponder summer exits – including Mainoo.

Chelsea, meanwhile, would leap at the chance to strike a deal for the Englishman. However, some reports have claimed that United wouldn’t sell for less than £100 million, so BlueCo could even need to spend nine figures on a player for the third time since their takeover.

Jamie Smith falls short but Surrey reinforce commanding position over Middlesex

The 22-year-old keeper batter made 97 as Surrey look for victory against a dogged Middlesex

Vithushan Ehantharajah13-May-2023Surrey 380 (Smith 97, Burns 88) lead Middlesex 209 (Robson 76, Malan 66, Worrall 5-48) and 128 for 3 (Holden 42*, Clark 1-3) by 43 runsThe weather apps lied to the 3,000-odd people who turned up at the Kia Oval on Saturday. It was not sunny, nor was it warm. The “real feel” overshot by about 10 degrees. Of the things Saturday promised, this was the biggest lie. It was also the only one.Coming into day three of this encounter, the scope was of Surrey asserting dominance or Middlesex showing some mongrel. By the end, both had played out to a point. A first-innings lead of 171 was established, then whittled down to 43 in 41 overs of dogged resistance that certainly raised the temperature under the collars of those out on the field. This London Derby always tends to surprise with its ill-feeling, and this was no different. Surrey had to work harder than they’d have liked for three second-innings wickets and the atmosphere out in the middle was gnarly, in the best way possible. This stuff still matters to these players. We’ll get a reminder of just how much on Sunday when tensions will rise a little more. That Surrey control the match and the environment around it was primarily down to Jamie Smith extending his knock from 55 to 97. Watchful at first, particularly in the face of some suffocating bowling, typified by the impressive Ethan Bamber, he expanded his repertoire to what looked a certain hundred.Alas, number seven will have to wait a little longer, but the 42 runs added was the foundation for a doubling of Surrey’s overnight score to 380. The 22-year-old set a new season-high at least, beating his 88 against Warwickshire a couple of weeks ago. There was palpable dismay at his dismissal, particularly as the crowd swelled as he approached what would have been a second century this year. The first came in Sri Lanka for England Lions, and alerted the rest of the country that this kid is going places. As such, an “I was there when Jamie Smith carried Surrey” was replaced with a “I was there when Luke Hollman tied Jamie Smith down and eventually got him to york himself into a stumping”.From Middlesex’s perspective, it was an overdue dismissal. Smith was dropped on 24, then again on 55 off the last ball of day two. Even this morning, there were enough plays and misses to wonder if Smith might finish Saturday winning Eurovision. Most, if not all of that angst came from the youngster’s end because wickets were coming pretty regularly at the other. Tim Murtagh needed just six deliveries to take out Foakes, thanks to an exceptional catch by John Simpson standing up to the stumps. The Middlesex wicketkeeper spent most of the morning with his helmet on, making everything a little more claustrophobic for the batters. Will Jacks didn’t seem bothered at first, standing in his crease to lift Bamber over wide mid-on for six to level Middlesex’s first-innings score of 209 for the loss of just four wickets.Bamber would get his revenge, Jacks neither forward nor back with Simpson breathing down his neck, allowing enough room between bat and pad for a delivery to nip through and take off stump. Similar indeterminate footwork did for Jordan Clark, slapping Ryan Higgins to backward point.Upon Smith’s departure, the lead was only 74 but a long tail delivered as the final four contributed 101 with the bat. Abbott and Worrall were the main grantors, albeit in wildly different styles. Abbott was prim and proper; attacking no doubt, particularly as he danced down the track and slapped Higgins into the stands in front of the Pavilion on the stroke of lunch, but in a calm, calculated manner.Emerging after the break, Abbott took the lead from 82 to 131 before falling short of a second half-century of the season, inadvertently guiding a delivery down onto his stumps. In tagged Worrall for something far more agricultural, clearing his front leg to smack Higgins down the ground first ball, then heaving a six over mid-on and smiting a drive on the up for four through cover in successive deliveries of the allrounder’s next over.Roland-Jones eventually tamed Worrall with a short delivery through to the keeper, after the Australian had seemingly found a remedy with a guide over the top of the slips. A swat through to Simpson (standing back) brought an engaging innings to a close. With 49 overs to go against a visiting line-up that had lost nine wickets inside 21.1 overs two days ago, thoughts turn to a possible Sunday off with an Innings victory. Sam Robson and Mark Stoneman knuckled down, getting through a 30-minute spell before tea, ensuring at the very least Middlesex will fight another day.The openers returned with the same patient approach, not quite taking it to Surrey’s experienced, seam-laden attack but certainly doing enough to frustrate them into ball complaints. Midway through the 13th over, those were heeded and a replacement called for.And yep, you guessed it – wickets followed. Though there was no sense Middlesex were undone just by a change of Dukes, they were certainly unlucky. Not so much for Robson’s dismissal, snicked off by the impressive Abbott, but certainly for Stoneman’s.On 28, he went for a wild square drive to Gus Atkinson, as the ball shot through to Foakes. It turned out the ball attributed to the nick came through bat hitting the floor, with replays showing a clear gap between bat and ball.Of course, there is no DRS, though the presence of Sky’s camera meant Atkinson’s front foot was checked via stump cam. There had been a handful of high-def replays of potential stumpings and run-outs, with another coming later on when Max Holden was almost seen off for 28 with a direct hit from Rory Burns. Nevertheless, it did feel an odd ad-hoc overstepping of the usual guidelines the County Championship is played under. Then again, if you’ve got the technology there, why not use it? They did so again to check Clark’s front foot – this time from a parallel camera – when he trimmed off Eskinazi. It felt a shame they didn’t raise the stump mics in the process, as Surrey and Eskinazi exchanged a few words before a second send-off after the delivery’s legitimacy was confirmed. You could sense the host’s frustration, which they perhaps have themselves to blame for exacerbating after Jacks gave Holden a life on 18, dropping a simple catch at second slip from Kemar Roach. Burns then pulled up the umpires for allowing Holden and Simpson to walk off after 38 overs. The light was bad, but Burns seemed to suggest there was no communication that Surrey’s pace quintet were pushing their luck until Worrall went short to Holden. Burns coaxed the batters back to the middle with the offering of pace-off. A couple of overs of Jacks’ off-spin sandwiching one of medium pace from Ryan Patel later, stumps was officially called.

Gordon 2.0: Newcastle have signed one of the best teenagers in the world

Losing their last two games in league and cup, Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United will be aiming to right some wrongs when heading to West Ham United on Monday night.

Indeed, picking up a much-needed victory in the Premier League would be the ultimate confidence boost for the Magpies before heading into the EFL Cup final versus Arne Slot’s Liverpool, knowing full well anything is possible in a one-off affair at Wembley.

Whatever does take place when the Reds and the Toon do eventually butt heads, Newcastle will have to make do without Anthony Gordon being present as the ex-Everton man remains sidelined due to a suspension.

Gordon's rising importance at Newcastle

Whilst the likes of Alexander Isak have stolen many a headline this season for their sensational attacking displays, Gordon is definitely in the same conversation when it comes to Howe’s most important performers at St James’ Park.

Whilst Isak is way out in the lead as the Toon’s top scorer in the Premier League this season with 16 unbelievable strikes, the 24-year-old finds himself in the silver medal position with six goals of his own in league action, on top of also collecting an impressive five assists.

It’s been a sharp rise for Gordon who was a raw but unpolished gem when the Magpies picked him up for a steep £45m back in January of 2023, having only helped himself to seven goals in the Everton first team from 78 clashes.

That goal haul overall for his boyhood club has nearly been eclipsed just this season in his far more comfortable surroundings, with Gordon now an accomplished top-flight presence on Tyneside.

Looking at the table above, it’s clear how much Gordon has grown pulling on Newcastle black and white, with Howe hopeful that an up-and-coming talent can soon follow in the England international’s footsteps.

Anthony Gordon looks dejected for Liverpool

Howe's next Gordon at St James' Park

It’s not just the 24-year-old in isolation who has come on leaps and bounds under Howe’s guidance, with starlets such as Lewis Miley and William Osula gifted regular opportunities to impress as the next generation of Newcastle stars.

The lesser-spotted Vakhtang Salia is another face that could soon make waves in the senior picture at the top-flight side, having already been hailed as “one of the best teenage prospects in the world” today by journalist Graeme Bailey.

After all, the Georgian attacker was being looked at by Manchester City and Arsenal at one stage, but Howe and Co ultimately won the 17-year-old’s services ahead of other frenzied suitors, with the FC Dinamo Tbilisi youngster officially joining the Newcastle in August.

Much like Gordon once had to deal with at Goodison Park, Salia has a lot of hype surrounding his name, with the Georgia U21 international already up to seven goals in the Tbilisi senior side, despite only being a teenager very much learning the ropes.

Everyone associated with the Tyneside outfit will hope Salia can add a new spark to the first team on his arrival, with Miley and Osula acting as a big inspiration.

Capable of playing as a striker too, Salia’s arrival on the scene as a tricky attacker will also gift the Magpies another option up top, away from the 17-year-old potentially mirroring Gordon’s rise down the flanks.

Anthony Gordon celebrates for Newcastle

Of course, all of this hype could work against Salia, but the Newcastle masses will pray another exceptional youngster is about to be unearthed.

La Roja captain Morata missed the decisive penalty in the Nations League final defeat to Portugal, leaving him “upset” and hinting that it could be his last game for the national team. After a 2-2 draw, the tie went to a penalty shootout and the only miss came from Morata, whose effort was saved by Portugal's Diogo Costa.

After a heartbreaking penalty shootout loss in the final, the striker opened up about the emotional toll of the night and the uncertainty surrounding his international future the 32-year-old didn’t shy away from addressing the possibility of stepping away from La Roja, saying: "I'm upset because we all did a great job, and I feel bad for all my teammates, but that's part of football and life."

Pressed about whether this could have been his final appearance for the national team, he said: "Nothing is certain, it depends on many things. Right now, I'm just thinking about my team-mates and what happened today. Things need to be thought through calmly, but of course, it's a possibility that I won't be here in September." He continued, "I didn't cry on the grass, although I certainly wanted to, but my family, my children, were there."

Arsenal have a future England superstar & it's not Nwaneri or Lewis-Skelly

Unless there is a major tournament, international breaks can be pretty boring for fans, but this time, there has been something to cheer for Arsenal fans.

The Gunners’ latest academy gem, Myles Lewis-Skelly, was a surprise inclusion in Thomas Tuchel’s first England squad last week, so it was even more of a surprise when he was named in the starting lineup on Friday night.

As the Emirates faithful are now accustomed to seeing, the teenage sensation looked entirely at home in the first-team and even scored his first goal for the country.

It was the perfect introduction to international football for the young star, but there might be even more to come from Hale End, as another of their most exciting prospects looks destined to be the youngest Arsenal player to win a senior England cap, and it’s not Ethan Nwaneri.

Arsenal's young England stars of yesteryear

While Lewis-Skelly is the first to come along in a little while now, Arsenal have seen a number of their teenage talents make their way into the senior England side in the past, with perhaps the most notable example being Theo Walcott.

The now-retired attacker joined the Gunners in a £5m deal from Southampton in January 2006, and while he didn’t make a single first-team appearance for the rest of the season, he made his England debut in a friendly against Hungary on May 30th, at just 17 years and 75 days old, making him the youngest Arsenal player to make a senior England appearance – for now.

Then, as if that wasn’t enough, the teenager was included in the 2006 World Cup squad, even if he never got onto the pitch in Germany.

The third youngest Gooner to represent the Three Lions, behind Lewis-Skelly, was fellow Hale End icon Jack Wilshere, who debuted at 18 years and 222 days old on August 11th 2010, against Hungary.

At one point, it looked like Wilshere was heading for the very top of the game, and he did manage to win 34 senior caps for the national side, but persistent injuries derailed what should have been an incredible career and ultimately forced him into early retirement in 2022.

However, the former fan favourite will at least have his place on the list of Arsenal youngsters to play for the national team, although with a certain youngster coming up through the ranks at Hale End, he might not be the third youngest for much longer.

Arsenal's future England star

So, the first thing to say is that we are pretty certain Nwaneri will make the first of many appearances for England in the coming months, but at 18 years old, he simply can’t be the Gunners’ youngest Three Lions representative.

Max Dowman, on the other hand, certainly could be.

Now, we should exercise some caution here, as the Chelmsford-born gem is still just 15 years old, and predicting the future of young footballers is hardly a science, but in this case, the Hale Ender looks destined for stardom.

Indeed, despite being 14 at the start of the season, the academy’s “crown jewel,” as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has been training with the first team for some time now.

Moreover, he is already thriving with the U18s, scoring six goals and providing seven assists in 18 games.

In the process, he has become the youngest player to score in a UEFA Youth League Game in September and has already made one appearance for the U21s.

On top of all that, the incredible youngster is reportedly being mentored by Declan Rice, who described him as “the best 15-year-old in the country” while the aforementioned Kulig has suggested he is the ‘most exciting’ teenage talent to emerge on the scene since Lamine Yamal.

Ultimately, Arsenal have a proud track record of producing youngsters who go on to play for England, and with how fast Downman is currently developing, we wouldn’t be surprised to see him break Walcott’s record and become the club’s youngest ever Three Lions representative.

Leicestershire Foxes ended a five-game losing run in the Vitality Blast to secure their first win of the campaign, beating Durham by seven wickets at Seat Unique Riverside.Josh Hull was the star of the game with the ball for the Foxes, claiming three wickets for 35 in just his second game, to help limit the home side to 168 for 9 from their 20 overs. Ollie Robinson top-scored for Durham with a career-best 69 not out and was supported by 46 from Ashton Turner, but their total appeared par at best at the halfway stage.Nick Welch and Lewis Hall provided a strong platform for the visitors to put them ahead of the rate. Durham debutant Luke Robinson threatened to drag his team back into the match with two wickets.
