Where are all the fans? Tarnished Gold Cup fights for relevance, despite compelling play, as CONCACAF tournament goes head-to-head with Club World Cup in U.S. this summer

With declining interest, and the madness of the soccer calendar snatching away talent, competitive play may not be enough

Jeremy Antonisse took his time. After all, he had plenty of it. The Curacao winger had made a burst forward in 94th minute, his side trailing 1-0 to Canada. And after an incisive feed into his path, the PSV winger had the space to consider the angles, ponder the distance between him and the goal, take an extra touch, and slot home past a helpless goalkeeper.

He turned away in celebration, but as he looked towards the fans, his teammates mobbing him, he peered into what was a largely empty stadium, Curacao supporters dotted in the seats throughout Shell Energy Stadium, home of Houston Dynamo. Part of that, of course, was due to the fact that some of the loyal support had flooded out of the gates, assuming there was no way that the team could piece together a miraculous 1-1 draw.

But it spoke to a broader issue. This was one of the biggest games in the nation's history, the chance to pip a CONCACAF rising power. And the game didn't come close to selling out.

Such has been the story of the 2025 Gold Cup. It has offered plenty of quality, countless memorable moments, and a reinforcement of the jeopardy that the federation can bring. But with seemingly declining interest in the tournament itself, widely vacant stadiums, and the madness of the football calendar snatching some of its best talent away, there is a sense that even a good competition won't quite be enough.

The tournament is at a crossroads like never before. And no one quite has a solution.

GettyWhat the Gold Cup should be

As a quick refresher. The Gold Cup is a competition played by (almost) every team in CONCACAF every other year – plus one invited guest. Qatar were in it for a couple of tournaments in a row. Saudi Arabia are involved this time. It was founded in 1991, and it was pretty much the only measuring stick for CONCACAF sides outside of the World Cup.

UEFA had the Euros. CONMEBOL had the Copa America. CAF had the African Cup of Nations. This was CONCACAF's response. The Confederations Cup rather muddled things for a while, but that brought in outside teams that treated it with varying degrees of seriousness. The Gold Cup was, well, the Gold standard.

The key word there is . In theory, the Gold Cup was North and Central America's equivalent to the major tournaments held by other federations. It didn't matter that in the early days Mexico were by some distance the best side with the most complete history. This was the way to measure up.

In the early 2000s, it became more relevant in the United States – if only because the USMNT improved. The 2002 iteration felt seminal. Although the U.S. had won it before, that particular squad set the tone for what was undoubtedly a rise in the quality of American soccer.

Landon Donovan starred in the midfield. Kasey Keller held it down in goal. Brian McBride, Cobi Jones and Carlos Bocanegra were all a part of that team. The U.S. won comfortably in the final. That set the standard going forward.

"I was probably the most motivated I've been in my career," Landon Donovan told the U.S. soccer site.

And it hummed along after that. The tournament is where the likes of Tim Howard, Clint Dempsey, Michael Bradley and others U.S. stars cut their teeth at the international level. They played through injury. They wanted to win this thing. Sure, some managers used the month-long affair as a chance to experiment. But in general, it felt like equal parts extended tryout and must-win competition.

"I think it's a wonderful way to get your feet wet in terms of what it means to be in an international competition – the cadence of the games, how you recover, the different types of styles of opponents that you're going to play," former USMNT midfielder Dax McCarty told GOAL.

That has since changed. And this year's tournament is most emblematic yet of the shift.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportA crowded football calendar

The concerns start with the crowding of the football calendar. This is nothing new. More and more tournaments have been forced into the fray. Club teams – both in North America and in Europe – have to contend with more fixtures. Traditional competitions are longer. Contests such as the Leagues Cup have added a whole new slate of games to things.

FIFA has perhaps played the biggest role, though. There were fears that the introduction of the Nations League – marketed by FIFA but run by CONCACAF – would strip away interest in the Gold Cup. That competition checked some of the boxes that the Gold Cup did, while also offering a chance for various visions of competition.

Everyone is involved, while the stronger teams are consolidated into individual groups. It is tricky to field a weaker side when you know that your opponents will bring out their big guns. One only has to look at the meltdown following the USMNT's Nations League semifinal defeat to Panama in the spring to see how important the contest has become.

"More importance has been placed on the Nations League," Herculez Gomez told GOAL.

The Club World Cup has also played a role. Some top players remain with their club teams. The U.S. are without presumptive starters Weston McKennie and Tim Weah, who are playing in the CWC with Juventus.

There is also, more generally, a sort of fan fatigue. There is no doubt that American supporters of the Premier League or top European teams long for the sport to come back when their clubs aren't in action during the summer. But packing the calendar has, in reality, had something of an opposite effect.

Where once there was nothing, there is now seemingly too much, the Gold Cup and CWC clashing, simultaneously held in the U.S. over the past two weeks, and running into next month. There is only so much time in the day.

And some don't even have an interest in the CWC. Why might they look elsewhere?

"I don't see any situation where I'll be watching the CWC in the summer," CBS analyst Jamie Carragher told GOAL. "I'll be on holiday. I don't even think I'll keep abreast of the games. I might watch the semifinals or the final, if it's two really big teams."

GettyFans, fans and more fans

Perhaps the best way of encapsulating the interest in a competition, though, is how many people show up to watch it. The Club World Cup has had its issues with both massive and minimal crowds, but the Gold Cup's problems have perhaps been more pronounced.

The USMNT, this tournament's , have played in less than full stadiums. Only 12,000 showed up to see them take on Trinidad & Tobago – which kicked off at 3 p.m. local on a bright and beautiful day – and just 11,727 attended their the second match against Saudi Arabia.

Mexico, too, have struggled to sell out. Only 34,000 showed up in cavernous AT&T Stadium to see Mexico beat Suriname, 2-0. That venue has historically driven nearly 70,000 supporters of . CONCACAF's response after it became clear that sales weren't strong was to close off several sections, including the entirety of the 400-level nosebleed seats. But even then, the lack of support was clear.

And then there are the smaller nations. Trinidad & Tobago-Haiti was played in front of just 2,405 fans.

There are two potential reasons for that. The first is the political climate and immigration issues in America, which have actively discouraged some fans from attending games. The second is a switch in tradition. Gold Cup games used to be played in back-to-backs. Go to one game and you could stick around for another. That would encourage even some with no apparent stake in the game to watch.

Overall, the Gold Cup averaged just more than 19,000 fans per game in the group stage, a 32-percent decrease from an average of 28,055 in the 2023 tournament. The drop was even more dramatic for the USMNT and Mexico matches, down 57 percent and 21 percent, respectively. CONCACAF, which – like FIFA for the Club World Cup – uses dynamic ticket pricing for its matches, says it’s distributed nearly 50,000 for the Gold Cup final, which kicks off at 7 p.m. ET on July 6 at NRG Stadium in Houston.

There is a school of thought that suggests that fans will pay closer attention as the tournament continues, and the matches become more important. Historically, the U.S. has strolled through the group stage, benched its starters, and brought in the bigger names for later rounds of the tournament.

That won't happen for the USMNT this summer. Christian Pulisic, Antonee Robinson and a virtual starting lineup of players are missing because of CWC commitments, injury, rest or other reasons, and won't be coming in as the calvary, even if Mauricio Pochettino's team advance in Sunday's quarterfinal against Costa Rica.

For now, the trends aren't particularly good.

Getty/GOALThe USMNT predicament

For the USMNT, it's difficult to gauage, exactly, what this all means. There are two schools of thought. The first is that the Gold Cup means something – a theory built on the idea of tradition and American exceptionalism. The opposing one is that, well, it doesn't – a summation based on a widespread apathy and need for player rest.

Both things can be true at the same time. It is entirely plausible that the U.S. want to win – something that last happened in 2021. Pochettino has insisted that he is not here to treat the tournament like a training exercise. His decision to take identical squads to the pre tournament friendlies and the competition itself alone outlined that he wanted continuity over the course of a month.

And with limited competitive windows ahead of the 2026 World Cup, some have suggested the USMNT needed a more robust roster for this Gold Cup. So yes, then, there are the absentees. Weah, McKennie and Gio Reyna all have club obligations. Robinson is injured. Sergino Dest still needs time to fully recover from knee surgery. Pulisic asked for the summer off due to fears of load management and stress put on his legs after another campaign in which he sustained an injury.

His decision angered the USMNT sphere in full, and led to a mud-slinging match among former U.S. nationals and the player himself. Pulisic claimed that he wanted to play in the pre-Gold Cup friendlies, but Pochettino said no. Former USMNTers weighed in, claiming Pulisic had misplaced priorities or, worse, was disloyal. Clint Dempsey pointed out that he would play through anything if it meant having the chance to represent his country.

"For me, it was never a question if I was going to go into the national team and play,” Dempsey said. “Whether it was Gold Cup, World Cup qualifying, the Confederations Cup, Copa America, the World Cup, I wanted to be there because as a kid, I dreamed about representing my country."

Whether you think Pulisic is right or wrong doesn't matter. His decision, more broadly speaks to the clear divide during the competition.

"I hate to take wind out of the talking heads that want to be hyperbolic in this moment, but the Gold Cup has almost never created the majority of a World Cup roster," TNT commentator and former U.S. international Kyle Martino told GOAL. "This Gold Cup roster of missing stars is no different than any Gold Cup roster in the past. Sorry to go against the narrative that we should all pull our hair out and yell at people that aren't dedicated, but this is how it's always looked."

Chelsea new boy Liam Delap already proving it's time for Blues to cut their losses on hot-headed Nicolas Jackson after promising start at Club World Cup

The summer signing from Ipswich has seized his opportunity in the U.S. with his rival striker suspended for another brainless red card

As Chelsea's Club World Cup quarter-final against Portuguese giants Benfica looms, head coach Enzo Maresca has already had one selection dilemma decided for him. New £30 million ($41m) signing Liam Delap will almost certainly lead the line in North Carolina, after Nicolas Jackson effectively handed him the starting berth.

The Senegal international collected a needless red card just four minutes after coming off the substitutes' bench against Flamengo, costing his side as they went on to suffer a damning 3-1 defeat. In his absence, Delap would go on to coolly open his Blues account in their very next game.

This latest indiscretion has raised serious questions over Jackson's future at the club, and the new arrival's fast start to life at Chelsea is only intensifying that scrutiny. Could this be the final straw?

  • Getty Images Sport

    Recurring problem

Jackson's discipline – or lack thereof – has been a recurrent issue since the striker arrived from Villarreal two years ago. While it seemed for a time like he had learned his lesson, he has taken two significant steps backwards of late.

It took the Senegalese just six games of the 2023-24 Premier League season to accumulate five yellow cards and a subsequent ban, as he struggled to keep a lid on his temper, regularly picking up needless cautions for dissent and cynical fouls.

Jackson collected just five more yellows in the remainder of the campaign, and was able to maintain that somewhat improved temperament in 2024-25, with his seven domestic yellows a bit more spaced out (although 18 in just two seasons still isn't great).

    Seeing red

However, the fiery centre-forward finished the season in the worst possible way, earning a straight red card in the first half of the crucial clash at Newcastle in the run-in after leading with his elbow in a challenge with Sven Botman.

Chelsea battled admirably without him but fell to a 2-0 defeat that put their Champions League hopes in serious jeopardy, while Jackson was suspended for the remainder of the league season to dent their chances even further.

Though the Blues ultimately got the job done without him, any hope that the striker would redeem himself at the Club World Cup was swiftly extinguished as he crashed into an ugly, studs-up challenge just four minutes after emerging from the bench against Flamengo in the west Londoners' second group game, and the referee brandished the red. Chelsea would go on to lose 3-1.

  • AFP

    'A bad moment'

To make matters worse, Jackson's ban was upgraded from one game to two – meaning he could well miss the remainder of Chelsea's tournament unless they reach the semi-finals.

"It happened against Newcastle and today…It's a little bit of a bad moment for Nico," his manager Enzo Maresca said in the aftermath. "The red card has nothing to do with Nico's future… Nico knows in both games it was not good for the team.

"Nico apologised. At Newcastle, we were just 1-0 down and it was in the first half. Today, we were 2-1 down but with half-an-hour left. There was time to play, but with one man down it became all the more difficult."

    'Stupid, stupid, stupid'

Jackson felt compelled to apologise publicly and at length after his latest misstep, writing on Instagram that he was 'so angry at himself'. He wrote: "No excuses. I take full responsibility. I'll reflect, I'll grow, and I'll come back stronger for the badge and for everyone who believes in me. Sorry."

However, one of the striker's most vocal critics, Chelsea legend John Obi Mikel, was having absolutely none of it. "[It's an] unbelievable, stupid, stupid, stupid mistake, I don't know what is going through his head," he said. "You come into the game at 2-1 down and your team needs you and he does that.

"You can't keep making mistakes. I don't care what his frustration is, it is massive club, Chelsea Football Club. If you are annoyed that Delap is going to be the competition with you, if you are a big player you have to embrace it. We can become successful together as a team.

"Maresca must ask do I still trust this guy or do I stick with the player I brought into the football club, Delap? If he doesn't trust him then it is time for Delap to start the game."

Mitchell Marsh will drop to No. 3 when Travis Head is back

Mitchell Marsh put on a record 259 alongside David Warner at the top of the innings on Friday against Pakistan, and had made 52 as opener in the match before that. But he confirmed that he would be dropping down to No. 3 when Travis Head returns.Head had been out with a hand injury, but seems likely to play against Netherlands on Wednesday, having even progressed to practicing range-hitting (six-hitting), on Tuesday. Now, Marsh will drop down one spot, and Marnus Labuschagne will likely exit the XI.”I mentioned to David Warner, maybe he can bat three, but I got a firm no from him,” Marsh joked on the eve of the match. “But yeah, very happy to go back down to three. I’ve obviously batted there a lot over the last couple of years, so I feel really comfortable at three. And if and when Heady comes back in, I think that’s the best position for me to play for this team.”Related

Marsh’s numbers at first-drop are not especially impressive, though: he averages 22.25 after 12 innings there. This is compared to his average of 60.55 when opening, though that figure was greatly boosted by his having hit a career-best 121 off 108 on Friday. He has had a fruitful 2023, however, averaging 45.92 across 14 innings to make himself a fixture in Australia’s ODI line-up. Marsh said there were no major technical changes that spurred this growth – only hard work.”Not a whole lot’s changed [with my game],” Marsh said. “I’ve just probably not given up on the fact that I was striving for something and kept working hard through periods of time that were tougher than others.”In the last couple of years, I feel as I’ve been as consistent as I have been, which was something that I was always striving for. I guess all the best players in the world that you look up to, and certainly in our team, they’re so consistent. And that’s what I have been.”Australia lost their two first games in the tournament, but have now won two in a row. On the surface, their next opposition would appear to be the softest they might face in the league stage. But Marsh said Australia were taking nothing for granted against a team that’s beaten South Africa.”There’s absolutely no easy games. And you go into every game having done all the appropriate homework and hopefully you can come out with a win,” he said. “So, tomorrow is no different for us. We respect the Netherlands; they’re playing some good cricket and that will be a tough challenge.”

    WHAT HAPPENED?

After lifting the 2025 Gold Cup trophy with the Mexican national team, Guillermo "Memo" Ochoa has set his sights on a historic goal: becoming the first player to be selected in six FIFA World Cups. With the 2026 tournament fast approaching – and set to be hosted jointly by Mexico, the United States, and Canada – Ochoa remains motivated and hungry to compete.

Although he didn’t feature in any matches during the Gold Cup, Ochoa captained the squad and played a vital leadership role from the sidelines, mentoring younger keepers like Luis Ángel Malagón and Raúl Rangel. His presence in the locker room underlined his value beyond the pitch.

"I'm going to fight for a place in the World Cup," Ochoa stated firmly. "I'm not asking for favors – I want to earn it. It would be incredible to be part of that tournament. I train and compete every day with my club to stay at the highest level. People who have followed my career know how much I've given, and they know I’ll continue giving everything if I get the chance."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

At 39, Ochoa is not only aiming for another call-up but dreams of ending his career by playing in a World Cup on home soil.

“To have the opportunity to share that experience with fans in my country would be the perfect ending – the cherry on top,” he said. “This would be different from any other World Cup I’ve played. Just being part of it would be unforgettable. We’re one year away, and while the journey may feel long or short, I’m focused on making the most of each moment with the national team. Representing Mexico has been my home, and we hope to give the fans something to celebrate.”

Despite being a free agent, Ochoa remains committed to staying in top shape and open to offers – even from clubs in Liga MX – as he looks to remain in contention for a spot in the final 2026 squad.

Mexico coach Javier Aguirre has already made it clear: Ochoa will need to fight for his place like everyone else.

    DID YOU KNOW?

Ochoa was one of three Mexican players who didn’t see any action during the Gold Cup. Despite that, he lifted the trophy during the celebration as team captain. The goalkeeper holds the record for the most Gold Cup titles by a player, with six championships.

Alonso lays down his expectations from his full-backsWants them to be more aggressiveBrought up issues highlighted by Ancelotti last seasonFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Madrid head coach Alonso explained his footballing and tactical vision at his new club and shed light on the role he expects his full-backs to play in his system. He also acknowledged one pressing issue brought up time and again by his predecessor Ancelotti, stating that he is trying to learn from what the Italian has pointed out in the past.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Los Blancos had an underwhelming 2024-25 season, which also culminated in the departure of Ancelotti after a four-year tenure. The former Real Madrid manager often spoke about a lack of balance, which saw them suffer heavy defeats against Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-finals, as well as arch-rivals Barcelona in La Liga, Copa del Rey, and Supercopa de Espana.

WHAT XABI ALONSO SAID

Revealing what he expects from his full-backs, Alonso told former Real Madrid team-mate Guti on : "Once we've made progress, we need the full-backs to be higher, to be more aggressive. We have to be brave, we have to try to stifle [the opposition] so they don't get out. We have to not be shy and correct the opposing side. That's fundamental."

Later on, he made a telling Ancelotti reference.

"I've listened to Carlo, and he often said that the team lacked balance last season," Alonso explained. "And that's been important in the messages we're sending, when it comes to having the ball, turning it around, knowing how to accelerate, knowing how to stop… The quality is there, and the more collective sense we bring to the game… Then exceptional plays emerge that you can't coach. That's the path we want for the Club World Cup and for the future of this new era."

So far, the two Madrid full-backs, Fran Garcia and Trent Alexander-Arnold, have done a more than decent job in the ongoing Club World Cup. Garcia has shown relentless energy and has been among the best players in Alonso's first four games at the club, while Alexander-Arnold is slowly settling into his new surroundings. The Englishman grabbed an assist during Madrid's 1-0 win over Juve in the round of 16, and he will be hoping to build on that performance when Los Blancos take on Borussia Dortmund in the quarter-finals on Saturday.

Shanto looks for Bangladesh batting improvements: 'Nobody is satisfied scoring fifties'

Stand-in captain is “concerned” but says the team is “working on” converting starts into big hundreds

Mohammad Isam20-Oct-2023The last half an hour of the India-Bangladesh World Cup contest in Pune played out like the ending of a cricket-themed Bollywood movie. The protagonist reached his century and won the match right in the nick of time. Virat Kohli chased his 48th ODI century almost to perfection. He ran two runs within 20 yards of the bat. He slammed fours and sixes as the crowd cheered on. He farmed the strike with KL Rahul. Even the umpire missed a near-certain wide when things got tight. In all of this, the Bangladesh players stood around like they had absolutely no control over what was happening in the middle. It would have been made no difference to Kohli’s concentration but Bangladesh didn’t even try to slow down the game. Not even the odd by-play, like the bowler stopping in his stride. Perhaps even a cheeky wide when Kohli was getting close to his milestone would have shown that they were still capable of affecting this match instead of what actually happened, where it looked like they were just waiting for the ordeal to end.Having lost three games on the trot, Bangladesh’s campaign is in need of a lift and their acting captain Najmul Hossain Shanto is looking at his batters to provide it.”We were well prepared. Our top order did well but the two set batters [Litton Das and Tanzid Hasan] should have played long knocks. If one of them scored 120 or 130, it would have made life easier for the latter batters. I think we couldn’t bat well in the middle overs. One of our openers should have batted a bit longer. It would have been a different ball game.”We made our best start, adding 93 runs for the opening stand. But we couldn’t bat well in the middle overs. It is our responsibility to bat well. I bat at No. 3, which is an important position. We had couple of soft dismissals. It was a good wicket but the batters didn’t take responsibility. We have made big scores before too. If Litton and Tanzid batted for longer, it would have helped Mushy [Mushfiqur Rarhim] or [Mahmudullah] Riyad later in the innings.”Shanto has scored two of Bangladesh’s four ODI hundreds this year, and since he and Mehidy Hasan Miraz struck centuries against Afghanistan in the Asia Cup, they have gone nine innings without a three-figure score.”Nobody is satisfied scoring 50, 70 or 100, not the players or the coaching staff, unless it helps the team,” Shanto said. “Every batter is talking about it. Tanzid and Litton aren’t satisfied with their knocks. Big players convert these starts into 100s or 150s. We are all concerned, and we are working on it.”Tanzid Hasan came good against India after a series of low scores•ICC via Getty ImagesBangladesh have put a lot of faith in Tanzid, backing him through a series of low scores since he made his debut last month. Shanto took pride in the way the team was able to bring the best out of one of their young players and hoped that he kicks on from here. “Tanzid played really well but we expect better knocks from him. I hope he improves on it in the next matches. Every player should be backed like [Tanzid] was. Not half-hearted, but 100%. Tanzid batted well, but we need more from him. If we support him, he can play more such knocks.”Given Bangladesh need big scores from their batters, it seems strange that they are not letting some of them occupy their preferred spots. Shanto has been shuttled down to No. 4 twice in this World Cup but he typically bats at No. 3. Towhid Hridoy has been pushed down to No. 7 though most of his success has come batting at No. 5. They had an opportunity against India to use Mushfiqur’s experience at No. 4, in the absence of Shakib, but chose not to.Shato defended the team’s tactics. “Everyone is well aware of their batting positions so they are quite comfortable with it. If they know the plan beforehand, then there’s no difference. Hridoy likes to bat at No. 5. Mushy is scoring runs at No. 6. Riyad is batting well at No. 7. Shakib would have batted at No. 4. I think it was the right batting order.”With five matches still in hand, Bangladesh remain in semi-final contention. They have also turned things around from tougher positions in the past but it was only after shedding a lot of baggage. In a World Cup campaign, every day adds to the overall pressure of doing well.Perhaps Shanto’s clear speaking and candid press conference at the end of the Pune defeat was a bright spot. To see him willing to accept responsibility was a breath of fresh air. “We will definitely want to win the next match, every match. We haven’t played at our best yet, especially in our batting. We must be more responsible. There’s a lot left to do in this tournament. It is important to play a good game. It can change our momentum. Nobody knows, we can win the next four or five matches.”
