Sri Lanka Cricket has initiated a defamation lawsuit against the country’s sports minister, as the row over the administration of cricket in the country deepens.SLC is currently suspended by the ICC, at the request of SLC’s own officials, in an attempt to impress on the Sri Lankan government that the ICC will not tolerate political interference in the board.Meanwhile, at home, SLC and the sports minister are at war on various fronts – this defamation lawsuit being the latest of them. Separate from this legal action, the sports minister has also vowed to fight the stay order delivered by the Sri Lankan courts last Tuesday, which removed the “interim committee” that the minister had appointed, and essentially reinstated the board officials who had been sacked the previous day.Related

Sri Lanka Cricket suspended by ICC board

“In response to the persistent and damaging defamatory statements made by the Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Roshan Ranasinghe, Sri Lanka Cricket has taken a decisive step to protect its reputation and integrity,” a board release said. “Therefore, on the 13th November 2023, [SLC officials] jointly filed a defamation lawsuit in the District Court of Colombo, seeking damages amounting to 2.4 billion rupees on behalf of the Sri Lanka Cricket.”The release did not mention which particular statements SLC alleges are defamatory, but the comments that have been taken exception to, likely came on Saturday, during a long press conference the sports minister held, in which he accused the board of corruption and mismanagement, among other things. The minister has been accusing the board of corruption for around a year, but has often done so in parliament where his speech is protected from defamation suits due to parliamentary privilege.SLC had also held a press conference on the same day which featured personal insults directed at the sports minister.Under Sri Lanka’s sports law, which has been in place since 1973, the sports minister does have a range of powers over SLC as well as other sporting bodies in the country.SLC is seeking assurances from the top level of Sri Lanka government, that there will be no further political interventions, which in turn is likely to see the ICC suspension on the board lifted.

'I thought I was done' – Stokes glad to recover from hip injury after fearing the worst

The allrounder heard his hip “pop” and felt his tournament was over but is now all set to make a comeback as England look to bounce back

Matt Roller19-Oct-2023When Ben Stokes heard his left hip “pop” in the gym of the Radisson Blu hotel in Guwahati, he feared that his 2023 ODI World Cup was over before it had begun. Instead, he looks set to make his return from injury against South Africa on Saturday night, as England look to get their tournament back on track.Shortly after their arrival in India at the end of September, Stokes and Andy Mitchell, England’s strength and conditioning coach, were alarmed to hear a noise during a fitness session which turned out to be Stokes “ripping the fascia off my muscle”. Scans cleared him of a serious injury, but for around 36 hours, Stokes was convinced that he was out of the World Cup.”When I initially did it, I thought I was done,” Stokes revealed on Thursday, “because it’s not good hearing a pop. Thankfully, it wasn’t anywhere near as bad as what we initially thought… we got a programme in place straight away and it went really well. I’m here now, physically being available for selection, so it’s pretty good.”Related

'Spiritual leader' Stokes on target to make England XI against South Africa

Stokes came through England’s first training session in Mumbai unscathed on Thursday night, range-hitting for around half an hour against sidearm throws. “It’s obviously been a frustrating little niggle to get before the tournament started, but I’ve worked very hard to get to where I am now… I’m pretty confident that everything will be good.”I’ve worked to get back to a position of fitness where I’m able to go out and not be a hindrance on the team. I’ve worked hard and got to a point where I feel like I can do as much as I possibly can without having to hide in the field, or not be able to do as much as I need to do, to be able to actually have a positive influence on the team.”Despite not playing, Stokes attempted to have a positive influence in Delhi on Sunday night, addressing his team-mates in the aftermath of their 69-run defeat to Afghanistan. He does not hold an official role in the white-ball set-up but was described by coach Matthew Mott as England’s “spiritual leader” and has been a confidant to captain Jos Buttler.”Jos and Motty have got a lot on their shoulders with it being a World Cup,” Stokes said. “I try and help out as much as I can without stepping on Jos and Motty’s toes in terms of how they want to lead this group. I know that people do listen when I talk. I don’t try and speak too much but I try and speak when I feel it’s the right time.”Ben Stokes is set to make this return to the England side•ICC/Getty Images

Stokes said that he had encouraged his team-mates to draw a line under the defeat: “You’ve just got to move on pretty quickly because at the end of the day, you’ve just lost a game of cricket at the World Cup and everyone’s going to lose a game – not take it to heart. We’ve still got plenty of games left in the group to hopefully get through to those semi-finals.”He also implored his team-mates to rediscover their attacking style. “I don’t care if we lose: I want us to go out there and play in the way we talk about. If we’re going to go down, let’s go down doing what we’re known for. Let’s not be timid, be restricted in what we want to do,” Stokes said.”We want to go out and show the opposition what England is and what we’ve been known for… it’s just reminding ourselves about what we do best as a group of players: to always be on top of the opposition, and always make the plays, and make them be the reactive team, as opposed to us.”England are likely to re-balance their XI to accommodate Stokes’ return, with Harry Brook set to retain his place after he top-scored with 66 off 61 against Afghanistan. Stokes will not bowl at the World Cup but appears likely to replace an allrounder in their side, a move which would leave Joe Root as their sixth bowling option.Wankhede stadium, which is hosting its first game of the tournament, is renowned as a high-scoring venue which generally offers pace and bounce for seamers, which Stokes believes should suit England. “There have been some pretty slow wickets, especially under the sun,” he said. “A fresh wicket at Wankhede might be completely different.”But Stokes also cautioned against any expectations that he would single-handedly transform England’s campaign. “I’m not the Messiah. I think Woody [Mark Wood] said that, which is true: I’m one person in a team sport, one person who can add certain bits. It doesn’t all of a sudden mean you’re going to win a game because I’m just a very small part of a bigger entity.”Everyone who walks onto that field for England is a match-winner in their own right. If two or three of us have a day out, we know we’ll be a hard team to beat. I don’t think anyone – in team sport – coming back in automatically means you’re going to win a game. All I can try and do is what I do every single time I wear an England shirt, and give my absolute all.”

'The sky's the limit' – Rose Lavelle, Claire Hutton and Avery Patterson impress, Claudia Dickey on the rise: Stock up, stock down after Emma Hayes and USWNT's summer sweep

The USWNT were never threatened against Ireland and Canada, outscoring opponents by combined 11-0 in three matches

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. women's national team closed out their three-match summer campaign by defeating Canada 3-0, just days after beating the Republic of Ireland twice – both by 4-0 scorelines. Given the history of U.S. vs. Canada, this final match was going to be the biggest test of the three-game run.

And, although USWNT head coach Emma Hayes started a fairly inexperienced team, they completely dominated Canada, extending their all-time record against the Canadians to 54 wins, four losses and nine draws. Beating a nation 54 times? That's the most for the U.S. against any opponent.

Hayes experimented with just about everyone on the roster across the three games, with the match against Canada the closest (roster wise) to what we saw in the opening match-up against Ireland. The only change was Lynn Biyendolo in for Ally Sentnor in the No. 9 role.

Across all three matches, the USWNT scored 11 goals and kept a clean sheet. Many players earned first appearances, and Claire Hutton and Avery Patterson recorded their first international goals. Hayes called on Coffey and Biyendolo to lead the squad, and both chipped in goals across the three-match window. Coffey scored her third of the year, and the fourt of her career. Biyendolo's finish against Ireland was her 25th career goal.

The USWNT will take a brief break until the fall which will allow for Hayes to get back to the drawing board and think about what she's going to do with all of this talent. Mind you, we haven't even talked about Sophia Wilson, Mallory Swanson and Trinity Rodman, as "Triple Expresso" were not in this camp.

So who stood out? Whose stock rose against the Republic of Ireland and Canada, and whose fell? GOAL takes a look.

  • Getty Images

    Stock up: Rose Lavelle

The USWNT midfield missed Rose Lavelle. And if you ask Lavelle, she certainly missed her teammates. The Gotham FC midfielder returned to the USWNT after a six-month period in which she was sidelined with an injury. In her first game back, she chipped in a goal and an assist. These contributions were a clear reminder to everyone just who the dog-loving, Cincinnati-native is.

In the second meeting against Ireland just a few days later, Lavelle was understandably limited in minutes, but still managed to enter the match to give her hometown fans a heartfelt wave. Hayes almost to let Lavelle into the match when the stadium started erupting with a chant "We want Rose!" Against Canada, Lavelle's two set pieces resulted in goals for her team; a testament to her attention to detail and execution.

The first set piece couldn't have been drawn up any better. Lavelle played a lofted ball from about 30 yards out into the box. The weight and placement of the ball forced Canada to step up which resulted in a less-than ideal clearance from Casey Stoney's side.

USWNT defender Avery Patterson settled the poorly cleared header, laying up Sam Coffey for an easy first-time finish. Lavelle also was involved and even got the assist in the game's second goal. In the 26th minute Lavelle took a corner from the right side with her left foot. The ball found the head of the 19-year-old Hutton who headed it home for her first-ever international goal.

"Shout-out to Claire, I think she jumped just so high and kind of levitated for a second," Lavelle said.

Lavelle says she has some niggles she wants to work through when it comes to being fully back, but based on of her performances and impact on her teammates, chances are Lavelle is going to be in the mix moving forward.

Stock down: Midfielders not named Sam Coffey, Claire Hutton or Rose Lavelle

It's wild to think that the USWNT has other midfielders that aren't Sam Coffey, Rose Lavelle and Claire Hutton. In this camp, Hayes called in Sam Meza, Olivia Moultrie and Croix Bethune. While all players were able to get into at least one match, the Coffey, Lavelle and Hutton combination proved untouchable.

Meza found herself in good spaces, but had a hard time keeping the tempo of the match. Moultrie was effective in moments, but didn't make the same type of impact others around her did. Bethune has been out with injury so Hayes calling her into this camp was a nod to just how good she is in that attacking midfield spot.

Bethune had some sparkly moments, but didn't gel quite the same with everyone else in the same way Coffey, Lavelle and Hutton did. The amazing thing? Hayes also has Lindsey Heaps and Lily Yohannes. Both were given this camp and stretch of games off after long seasons in Europe.

  • Getty Images

    Stock up: Claire Hutton

Emma Hayes has put her trust in Hutton to play a double pivot role that isn't her natural state. Hutton is a true six, like Coffey, in the way she plays and moves about the field. However, like Coffey, Hutton has adjusted seamlessly and looks like she's been playing that way for years.

Hutton is a no-brainer for Hayes as she looks ahead. She is not only a hardworking and ball-winning center midfielder, but can also add to the attack and fill in gaps defensively.

Against Canada, Hutton scored her first international goal and it had her teammates, fans, and everyone watching in disbelief about just how she got up and headed the ball like a young Abby Wambach. Lavelle's placement was spot on, but the fact that Hutton was able to get up and over the Canada players to redirect the ball and drive it past goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan was a work of art.

"Claire plays well beyond her years," Lavelle said. "This is the first time that I've gotten to play with her, but just watching the game, since I've been away, I think she's been somebody who's been really fun to watch. The sky's the limit for her and she's already commanding in the midfield."

    And the progress is tangible.

"With each camp, I gain more confidence," Hutton said after the Canada game. "I gain the experience with [my teammates] and just the culture that we have here makes it so welcoming. Every camp gets a little bit easier, just on the field and off of the field."

    Stock down: Mandy McGlynn

Mandy McGlynn is certainly not out of the conversation in the goalkeeper pool, but after Phallon Tullis-Joyce's performances a couple months ago and now Claudia Dickey's two match run during this camp, she could be falling down the ranks. Of the keepers in this camp, McGlynn had the most experience to date.

She played the entire match against Ireland in the second meeting and managed to keep a clean sheet, although recorded zero saves. Whichever keeper got called on for the Canada game was likely going to have more action, and that was definitely the case on Wednesday night in D.C.

Dickey was able to put her stamp on the game, making some key saves and showcasing her ability to stop chances from a good attacking team, while also playing confidently with her feet when the opportunity arose. McGlynn will have to put in some work when she returns to Utah to ensure she's still on Hayes' radar come the fall.

Dickey was asked about the goalkeeper playing pool post-game.

"Everybody in this environment deserves being here," she said. "And I think it's a credit to the league, to the people overseas, to everyone involved. It's a competition, but like I think pushing each other every day is what matters, and it's exciting to me."

Five-star Santner and batters make it two in two for New Zealand

Netherlands faded away in the 323 chase as New Zealand further consolidated their position at the top of the points table

Himanshu Agrawal09-Oct-20231:37

McClenaghan: Young has done enough to keep his spot

New Zealand’s innings started with three maidens in a row but ended with them bashing 50 off the last three overs, courtesy Tom Latham, Mitchell Santner and Matt Henry, which propelled them to 322. Netherlands started the chase slowly and never shifted gears as they folded for 223, as New Zealand further consolidated their position at the top of the points table after making it two in two.Player-of-the-Match Santner, who clubbed an unbeaten 36 from 17 balls with the bat, then grabbed 5 for 59 with the ball, and in the process became the first New Zealand spinner to claim a five-for in a men’s ODI World Cup. He varied his pace consistently on a spin-friendly pitch – exactly the trait which makes him threatening – as the highlight of all his wickets was that of Scott Edwards’.Santner slowed it down considerably and went with a wide line outside off to tempt Edwards off the fifth ball of the 35th over. The Netherlands captain had cracked 12 off the three previous deliveries – it included a six and a four – and with the required rate mounting, went slogging across the line, only for the ball to balloon back towards Santner. Thus, at 174 for 6, all of Netherlands’ little-remaining hopes of causing an upset vanished. However, they had New Zealand in a tricky position with the ball at one stage. New Zealand lost 3 for 16 in the death overs – 238 for 3 in the 41st became 254 for 6 in the 45th – but Latham kept defying the Netherlands bowlers at one end. From being 1 off 5 balls after 34 overs, he smashed 53 from 46 despite the slow and gripping nature of the pitch, which proved challenging for all incoming batters barring Latham.Aryan Dutt had removed Mark Chapman to start the 45th over to leave Latham as New Zealand’s only specialist batter, but Netherlands let it slip despite standing a chance of restricting New Zealand to under 300. Before that, Will Young and Rachin Ravindra also hit half-centuries, together adding 77 in 14 overs for the second wicket. Eventually, New Zealand’s innings would be defined by such stands at a steady rate rather than massive ones.Rachin Ravindra and Will Young put on a 77-run stand for the second wicket•ICC via Getty ImagesEither side of that partnership, Devon Conway and Young had begun with 67 from 73 balls before Conway fell heaving at Roelof van der Merwe, while Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell added 41 at better than a run a ball. Ravindra, who followed up a career-best 123* against England with 51 against Netherlands, struck at a strike rate of 100. His stay ended only when an agile Edwards moved to his right to gobble a tickle off van der Merwe in the 33rd over. The highlight of Ravindra’s innings, though, was him squeezing a low and dipping full toss just outside off for four between point and short third. Just one over earlier, Ravindra had a stroke of luck going his way when the umpire turned down Netherlands’ appeal for lbw after a yorker from Ryan Klein trapped him in front, only for replays to show umpire’s call on leg stump. While he got a life on 44, Mitchell was dropped on 22 by debutant Sybrand Engelbrecht two balls later.Mitchell ended up hitting 48, including five fours and two sixes. One of those maximums went over long-on, his 22nd six in the region between mid-on and mid-off out of his 24 in ODIs. But it is the runs from Young that would be a positive for New Zealand. He had fallen for 12 in the warm-up against South Africa just before the World Cup started, before strangling himself for a golden duck in the tournament opener against England.Young had faced one maiden out of three which started New Zealand’s innings, but raced away to 27 from 23 deliveries to make up for lost time in the powerplay. That run included five fours and a six, as he went about driving, clipping, slicing and lofting at balls. Young slowed down a bit as Netherlands used plenty of spin, but after getting to his fifty in the 20th over, he clobbered Colin Ackermann for a six over the bowler’s head, with a follow-through that would please camerapersons. He fell for 70 off 80 balls when an attempted pull took the toe end of the bat, but his innings had laid a solid foundation for New Zealand’s total. With a huge total to chase, the only time Netherlands’ innings seemed to be tickling along steadily was when Ackermann and Teja Nidamanuru added 50 for the fourth wicket, before a late decision by Ackermann to send Nidamanuru back after an attempted second run resulted in the latter’s run-out. Other than Ackermann, who hit a composed 69, every other top-seven batter for Netherlands scored at least 12, but couldn’t push beyond Edwards’ 30.

Tremain wrecks Western Australia after Davies' maiden century

A stylish maiden first-class century from Ollie Davies and a memorable new-ball spell from Chris Tremain put New South Wales on the brink of ending their run of 15 Sheffield Shield matches with a win. After Davies’ superbly-constructed 129 had built a lead of 135, Tremain produced a stunning opening spell of 5 for 12 in nine overs as Western Australia sank to 34 for 6 to briefly threaten their lowest even Shield total of 41.The defending champions saved themselves from that and managed to make it through to the end of the second day through the efforts of Cameron Bancroft and the lower order but will need a miracle to make a game of it.Davies, the 23-year-old who has predominantly been a white-ball player and has reached Australia A level, was overlooked for NSW’s first three Shield games this season but earned a spot at the SCG in place of the injured Jack Edwards. On the first evening Davies had walked in with the home side tottering on 71 for 4 amid fears NSW’s batting woes could rear their head again, but he responded with a 117-ball century, reaching the landmark with a six over long-on.”They brought the field and I said to myself, if this is tossed up, I’m hitting the ball quite nicely and I back myself to get it over,” Davies told ESPNcricinfo. “I’ve been hitting a lot of balls trying to push myself back into the Shield team and was nice to get a hundred first crack back.”I’ve been overlooked at times for the red-ball side so for me I really did want to make a statement and show everyone that I can play red-ball cricket. Thought I did that today and helped put our team in a pretty good position.”When he was last-man out, NSW had built a strong lead and they quickly started to make it count on a pitch that had offered plenty of assistance with the new ball.Chris Tremain tore through the WA top order•Getty Images

Tremain was already their leading wicket-taker for the season and was soon growing his tally in dramatic fashion. He started by having Sam Whiteman caught down the leg side, then pinned Teague Wyllie and Hilton Cartwright lbw with consecutive deliveries to bring tea.On resumption, the hat-trick ball zipped past Josh Philippe’s edge but he did not last long before nicking into the slips. Tremain’s five-wicket haul arrived in just his seventh over when Ashton Turner shouldered arms and the ball clattered the top of off stump.NSW had resumed on a precarious 78 for 4 but they were soon making brisk inroads towards Western Australia’s total.Davies dominated the scoring in a stand of 116 in 27 overs with Moises Henriques before the captain was bowled by a ripping delivery from Corey Rocchiccioli.Davies batted at an excellent tempo and did not take undue risks, but also kept the bowlers under pressure. On 99 he showed the confidence to dance down the wicket to Rocchiccioli and launch him over long-on to bring up NSW’s first century of the Shield season.”My natural batting is quite aggressive, so I said to myself if I faced 100 balls I’d be close to 100 or 150 I’d be close to 150,” Davies said. “So for me it was just batting as long as I could and I knew scoring opportunities would present themselves along the way. It worked, so pretty stoked.”WA did take the last five wickets for 30, including two for debutant left-arm wrist spinner Hamish McKenzie, whose first scalp came courtesy of a brilliant catch at cover by Rocchiccioli, but any notion of them being back in the game was quickly scotched.
