Cummins pleased Australia 'saved the best for last'

Australia captain says the ODI World Cup “is at the top of the mountain” compared to the WTC title and retaining the Ashes this year

Sruthi Ravindranath19-Nov-2023Australia weren’t the clear favourites heading into the 2023 ODI World Cup. They began their campaign with two big losses (to India and South Africa), had injury troubles, and a number of out-of-form players. And most of their wins in the league stage were not necessarily convincing. But captain Pat Cummins was pleased his side “saved the best for last” as they convincingly beat hosts India – who were unbeaten in the tournament until Sunday – by six wickets in the final to lift the ODI World Cup trophy for the sixth time.”You’ve got to go and win a World Cup,” he said at the post-match presentation ceremony. “You just can’t wait for it to happen. And I think you got to be brave at times, you got to take the game on. And it was a real shift after those first two games. With our batting particularly, you saw the openers going out really aggressive and pretty much didn’t waver from that for the rest of the tournament.”Think we saved our best for last. And a couple of big-match players stood up and, yeah, we’re pretty chuffed.”Related

Cummins also put Australia’s turnaround down to their openers’ aggressive approach. Australia’s openers finished with the best combined average of all teams, of 47.86, in the tournament and their strike rate of 111.19 was only second to India’s 116.99.In the final, Australia found themselves in trouble when they were down 47 for 3 chasing 241. Mohammed Shami had removed David Warner for 7 in the second over and Jasprit Bumrah had Mitchell Marsh caught behind for 15. Soon after, Bumrah removed Steven Smith in the seventh over, pinning him in front for 4.It was only after that did Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne combine for the match-winning partnership of 192, not letting India into the game at any point.”I was one of those blokes with the hearts fluttering upstairs, I was pacing [after 47 for 3],” Cummins said. “Marnus walked in and out and a cool head straightaway. And Trav just does what he does – really brave again, he takes the game on, puts the pressure back on the bowlers. And to do it on the biggest stage shows a lot of character.”Australia were impressive with both bat and ball, but even more with their fielding. Thirty-seven-year-old Warner in particular was electric in the outfield, flinging himself to save a number of boundaries. He wasn’t the only one. Head’s catch to dismiss Rohit Sharma must count as one of the great catches in the game’s history.

“It’s been pretty much through the whole Aussie winter away overseas playing but we’ve had a lot of success and this pips it all, this is at the top of the mountain”Pat Cummins

“[We were] desperate for sure [on the field],” Cummins said. “It all started last week [in the semi-final against South Africa]. The boys are fantastic. And we’ve got an ageing side. But everyone’s still throwing themselves around in the game, [especially] when you got a big stadium like this packed.”Head, who was the Player of the Match in the final for his 137 off 120 balls, was injured at the start of the World Cup. The selectors, however, persisted with him and kept him in the squad. Making his comeback only in Australia’s sixth match – against New Zealand – in the tournament, he smashed 109 off just 67 balls, playing an important hand in the five-run win. He was also the Player of the Match in the semi-final against South Africa for his all-round effort of 62 runs and two wickets.”Amazing,” Cummins said of Head’s performance. “I think you have to give it to the selectors that backed him even when he was out with a broken hand and the medical team to get him back. It was a big risk that we took and it paid off and you couldn’t be happier for Travis, a legend. We love him and he’s easy to watch.”2:56

‘Travis Head has matured over the last two years across all formats’ – Moody

Cummins had said ahead of the final there would be “nothing more satisfying” than silencing the 100,000-plus crowd in Ahmedabad. His side did that, but he also said it was a “pretty special” moment to win in front of a massive crowd despite the support being one-sided in favour of India.”It [the crowd] was awesome, I must say,” he said. “I was pretty happy. They were solid for a lot of the bowling innings. A couple of times they got loud and it was really loud. But fantastic. I mean, the passion in India is unrivalled around the world and I think it’s amazing.”Every single person is wearing the blue shirt. So you look around and it’s a pretty special moment – one that whatever the result happened, we’re never going to forget a day like today.”Australia have won laurels across formats this year under Cummins’ captaincy. They became the Test world champions in June by beating India in the final, retained the Ashes in England, and have now won the ODI World Cup. For Cummins, this tops it all.”Yeah, it’s been awesome,” he said. “It’s been pretty much through the whole Aussie winter away overseas playing but we’ve had a lot of success and this pips it all, this is at the top of the mountain.”

Dockrell and Tector steer Ireland to 2-1 series win

Coming together at 37 for 4, the fifth-wicket pair put on an unbroken 104 to boss a chase of 141

An unbroken 104-run partnership between Harry Tector and George Dockrell helped Ireland turn a tricky situation into a comfortable chase against Zimbabwe in the third T20I in Harare to seal their first away T20I series win against a Full Member team. With 141 to chase, it looked like even this game could go into the last over like the last two when Ireland stumbled to 37 for 4 in seven overs. But Dockrell and Tector countered Zimbabwe’s spin threat and soon put Ireland in the driving seat. They coasted to victory in the end, with eight balls to spare. The momentum shifted after the 12th over. Ireland were going at a run a ball until then, and the asking rate was rising. Tector, who had played a key role in Ireland’s chase in the second T20I, was batting on 13 off 21 balls. Zimbabwe needed 69 from 48 balls. Then Dockrell hit Zimbabwe’s stand-in captain Ryan Burl for two sixes in a 16-run 13th over, and Ireland took 12 more off the next, bowled by Wellington Masakadza, to bring the equation down to 41 off the last six.Tector then shifted gears himself and ended up racing to a 41-ball half-century as he finished the series as its top scorer. He was, however, the first to admit in his post-game chat that it was Dockrell who engineered the win by taking the pressure off him when he was struggling early on, on a pitch where the ball often kept low.Zimbabwe, already without the suspended Sikandar Raza, had to name a third captain in as many games in this series with Sean Williams out with the side injury he suffered during the second T20I.It led to a major reshuffle, with opener Tadiwanashe Marumani and fast bowler Trevor Gwandu also making way as legspinner Brandon Mavuta, left-arm spinner Masakadza and batter Tony Munyonga coming into the side. After being put in, Zimbabwe continued to endure top-order struggles. Tinashe Kamunhukamwe, sent out to open after an impressive knock at No. 3 on Saturday, was trapped lbw off Josh Little’s first ball. But then Brian Bennett, who made 1 and 0 in his first two international games, made the most of his promotion to No. 3. Ireland’s bowlers targeted him with short balls, but he didn’t shy away from pulling and hooking his way out of the barrage. Zimbabwe only scored 26 in their first five overs, but ended the powerplay on a high when Bennett pulled Barry McCarthy for consecutive sixes.File photo – Gareth Delany took the wickets of Wessly Madhevere and Brian Bennett in a match-defining seventh over•AFP/Getty Images

But Gareth Delany turned the game around in the next over, first trapping Wessly Madhevere lbw after he missed a pull to one that stayed low and then getting Bennett to chop on for a 19-ball 27.Burl was nearly out first ball, but Tucker couldn’t hold on to a catch off the inside edge. Burl then hung around with Munyonga before Craig Young castled the latter.Like in the second T20I, Burl and Madande put on a defiant stand, adding 55 off 47. But Young gave Ireland a crucial breakthrough by bouncing Madande out before Burl drove Little straight to Delany at cover.Mavuta and Luke Jongwe added an unbroken 24 runs for the seventh wicket, taking Zimbabwe’s total to 140.Zimbabwe started well again with the ball, with Richard Ngarava trapping Paul Stirling in front in the first over. Blessing Muzarabani, introduced into the attack in the fourth over after Masakadza opened the bowling with Ngarava, also struck in his first over when Andy Balbirnie miscued a pull to Burl, who took a good catch backpedaling from mid-off.Lorcan Tucker swept Masakadza for a boundary, but lost his stumps trying the same shot next ball.Curtis Campher joined Tector at the crease but was struggling to get the spinners away, especially Mavuta, and the legspinner eventually got a leading edge off him that was gobbled up at cover. That brought Tector and Dockrell together, and the two proceeded to complete the chase almost faultlessly, with Dockrell hitting the winning runs for a second game in a row.

The plans that exist for team are exciting and I look forward to getting to Hove and helping Sussex with success along the way”.Farbrace described Hughes as “a top-class player” with vast experience. “We are all very much looking forward to working him and enjoying how he helps our team on and off the field,” he said.

Quando iríamos fazer o reequilíbrio do time, sofremos o empate.

A paz existe sempre.

Healy toasts dominant Australia on successful tour: 'We had just two and a half days of bad cricket'

India coach Amol Muzumdar insists the team still has a “happy dressing room” despite comprehensively losing the ODI and T20I series

Two moments at the DY Patil Stadium on Tuesday summed up the women’s white-ball series between India and Australia. The first in the tenth over of the Indian innings. Alyssa Healy waited for Harmanpreet Kaur, on 3 off 5, to look up before ringing in the field changes. Ellyse Perry was moved to her right to deep backward square leg. Ashleigh Gardner was pushed back from the ring to deep midwicket. Harmanpreet had just faced a couple of dot balls – the first on a shortish length, pushed towards backward point, and the second on a good length outside off that she defended towards the off side.Annabel Sutherland then slipped in a full ball on the fourth-stump line. Harmanpreet anticipated another short-length ball and moved back and across early, and ended up chopping it onto her stumps. the result – her sixth single-digit score across formats in the series against Australia.Related

Harmanpreet and Healy – different methods, same ambition

And then the second moment, in the 17th over of Australia’s chase. Phoebe Litchfield, in after a double-strike from Pooja Vastrakar, was to face Shreyanka Patil for only her fourth ball. Spooked by her abilities to hit behind the stumps, the four fielders India had on the boundary were cover-point third, backward square leg and midwicket. It took no time for Litchfield to shimmy down and loft one over mid-off, and then again to find the gap between mid-off and cover. Eventually, Australia got to their 148-run target with eight balls unused. After completing their 2-1 T20I series win against India, Australia’s captain Healy lavished praise on Litchfield, who finished the white-ball leg with 344 runs at an average of 86.”I was joking sitting on the bench that I remember when I was that fearless when you come out and you have lost two wickets in an over and play a ramp over the keeper for four,” Healy said. “Unbelievable talent but at the same time she has got a good head on her shoulders and has fitted in beautifully in our squad and will play a key role for us in the Bangladesh [T20] World Cup [2024] and the ODI World Cup [2025] in these conditions in the next 18 months. She is great to watch and hopefully she is going to have a long and successful career for Australia.”Healy also threw her weight behind Harmanpreet, after India head coach Amol Muzumdar had brushed off concerns surrounding the captain’s form by saying a form slump “happens to every cricketer”.Harmanpreet began the T20Is against England with 26 off 21 before two single-digit scores including an unbeaten 6 in the third T20I win. She then scored 49 and 44 not out in the one-off Test against the same opposition before returning single digits in each outing with the bat against Australia.”She got out playing the sweep shot quite a lot, which she traditionally plays quite well,” Healy said. “It might be down to some form. She has had probably had two hard series on the trot and this series has been a long one. [We had] no specific plans in place, but we know we need to be switched on when she walks out to the crease and our bowlers did a great job at keeping her quiet.”Despite Pooja Vastrakar’s blows, it was not an evening to remember for Harmanpreet Kaur’s side•Getty Images

Healy and Harmanpreet had contrasting build-ups to the series and Healy, in her first tour as full-time captain, alluded to the different attitudes they have.”[Harmanpreet and I] are two competitive cricketers going out there doing their job. We approach it differently and that is no disrespect to her, and that’s over to her to deal with that. From my point of view there is no animosity there. If I need to be given a send-off, so be it. I am all for it, because at the end of the day, I am chirpy behind the stumps. If you are willing to dish it out, you have got to be able to cop it.”While India won the one-off Test against Australia, they lost the ODI and T20I series comprehensively. Despite the result, Muzumdar said that the Indian dressing room “a happy space” and was “proud” of the way they played.”Irrespective of the result, we should be proud the way we played all the games,” he said. “Apart from the third ODI, all the other games have been close, so they should be proud of what they have done. The biggest positive is the girls have responded nicely in all the formats, whether it was Test cricket – we played after nine years in India. Not many had played red-ball cricket till then. In white-ball cricket we really need to focus on our fielding and our fitness.”At the moment it is a happy dressing room. I know we have not gotten the results we would have wanted this series, but they are in a happy space in the dressing room. That is how it should be and that is how I intend it to be till the World Cup.”Healy was also happy with the learnings from the series and said Australia played only “two and a half days” of poor cricket on their part.”I am just really, really proud of this group of people. We are here in India over a month that we are traditionally at home spending time with our families, and it is the first time we are away this time of the year.”The month that we have been here, we have played two and a half bad days of cricket – one and a half days in the Test match and one T20 – and I am really proud of the group. Hopefully we can have a really successful 2024 on the back of it.”

Play delayed as third umpire gets stuck in lift at MCG

The start of the second session on the third day was held up in unusual circumstances

AAP and ESPNcricinfo staff28-Dec-2023Play was held up in bizarre circumstances during the second Australia-Pakistan Test at the MCG because the third umpire Richard Illingworth got stuck in a lift.Players returned to the middle after the lunch break on Thursday, in time for the scheduled 1.25pm start to the second session. But in unusual scenes, the two central umpires wouldn’t allow a ball to be bowled because Illingworth was unable to return to his post in the grandstand. It left Australian batters David Warner and Steven Smith waiting to resume, with the hosts stuck on 6 for 2 in their second innings with an overall lead of 60.After a few minutes the fourth umpire, Phil Gillespie, ran from the boundary into the third umpire’s box so that play could resume and Illingworth made his way a few moments later, giving a light-hearted wave as he sat down.

Cricket Australia and the MCG both produced light-hearted responses to the peculiar delay, which lasted seven minutes.”The game is delayed because the third umpire…is stuck in the lift,” Cricket Australia’s social media arm posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. The MCG was quick to reply: “Sorry.”Channel Seven host Mel McLaughlin was also in the lift that became stuck and said that it took about 10 minutes for them to be left out.Meanwhile, a busy afternoon for fourth umpire Gillespie continued later in the session when he was briefly called on to stand in the middle alongside Michael Gough when Joel Wilson needed to leave the field for an over.

How Bumrah's advice helped Akash Deep

India’s debutant fast bowler Akash Deep had his hand on his head when the no-ball siren went off during the fourth over of the day in Ranchi. He had just sent Zak Crawley’s off stump cartwheeling with a nip-backer for what would have been his first Test wicket, but the replay showed he had overstepped.”I felt very bad,” Akash, 27, told the host broadcaster after the first day’s play. “Not because it would have been my first international wicket but because they were playing really well after that. When they were scoring freely, I was feeling bad that the team might suffer because of me.”Crawley was on 4 when he got the reprieve. Soon after, he smashed Mohammed Siraj for three successive fours followed by a six.Related

It was Akash who eventually broke the opening stand when he had Ben Duckett caught behind in the tenth over. Two balls later, he trapped Ollie Pope for a duck to make it 47 for 2. In his next over, Akash once again hit the top of Crawley’s off stump, this time with a legal delivery. At the end of his seven-over spell, he had taken 3 for 24 to put India on top.”No, there was no nervousness because a lot of things had already been discussed, with our coaches, Rohit ,” he said. “And I have been playing cricket for some time now, so it did not feel anything new. I was just trying to follow my process.”He also benefited from listening to Jasprit Bumrah, who told him to bowl a touch shorter than he does in domestic cricket. According to ESPNcricinfo’s logs, two of his wickets came via short-of-length deliveries and one via good length.”In domestic cricket, our length is a couple of feet fuller,” he said. “Here, our coaches, captain and Bumrah told me that at international level, the length is a touch shorter because batsmen look to chase the ball here. Akash’s father Ramji Singh, a physical education teacher in a government school, never wanted him to become a cricketer. He was paralysed after retirement and was bedridden for five years before breathing his last in February 2015. In October same year, Akash’s older brother Dhiraj died on his way to a hospital in Varanasi following a brief illness.”His father always wished for him to become a government officer, but cricket was his true passion,” Akash’s mother Laduma Devi told PTI. “I would secretly send him to play cricket and help him pursue his dream.”During that time, if someone heard that he was playing cricket, they would say, ‘ [he is spoilt and will become a rogue]. But we had faith in him and didn’t let him give up despite losing my malik [husband] and beta [older son] within six months [in 2015].”Akash made his first-class debut in December 2019 and has 104 wickets in 30 matches at an average of 23.58. Talking about his journey, he said: “I don’t know what all I did [in domestic cricket] but whatever match I played, I played as if it was the last match of my life. Whatever worked for me, I would just try to repeat that in every match.”After his first spell on Friday, he bowled another ten overs but could not take a wicket with the older ball. “There was some help early on but after that the pitch dried out and the ball also became softer,” he said. “I think as a bowling unit we should focus on our line and length, keep things tight, and let batters take chances.”
