Who will be the biggest disappointment of the 2025-26 Premier League season? GOAL writers make their predictions

The summer has not gone well for certain managers, while certain high-profile signings are under intense pressure to justify their fees

The new Premier League season is about to get under way, with defending champions Liverpool hosting Bournemouth on Friday, so it's time for us at GOAL to stick our necks out and make some predictions.

Ahead of the big kick-off at Anfield, our writers have already started having their say on the biggest talking points going into the 2025-26 season, including the Golden Boot winner, the first manager to be sacked and potential surprise packages.

Here, though, we're focusing on flops, by trying to figure out which teams will be the biggest disappointments of the coming campaign. Last term saw both Tottenham and Manchester United finish in the bottom six, so is there a team who could follow suit this time around? Our writers have their say…

Getty Images Sport'Villa run the risk of regressing'

Mark Doyle: It's difficult not to be a little worried for Aston Villa. Unai Emery has done a sensational job with a club the hapless Steven Gerrard left in relegation trouble and reached the quarter-finals of last season's Champions League, where they were narrowly beaten by eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain. However, Villa's failure to qualify for this season's competition has hit them hard by seriously restricting their market movements. Emery's squad has barely been strengthened at all; in fact, it's even weaker than last season and when one considers Thursday night football is never really conducive to a good Premier League season. As such, Villa really run the risk of regressing this year.

AdvertisementGetty Images Sport'Newcastle may struggle to finish in the top eight'

James Westwood: Newcastle will fall out of the Champions League places after failing to land almost all of their primary summer transfer targets. Eddie Howe does not have the tools to build on the club's historic 2024-25 campaign, and things could yet get worse with star striker Alexander Isak pushing for the exits. The Magpies may struggle to even finish in the top eight if Isak leaves, because no one in the squad is even close to capable of replicating his goal output.

Getty Images Sport'Brentford could be relegated'

Amee Ruszkai: After being a wonderful addition to the Premier League in recent seasons, I'm really concerned about Brentford this term. Not only have they lost a fantastic manager in Thomas Frank, and replaced him with the inexperienced Keith Andrews, they've also bid farewell to top scorer Bryan Mbeumo, club captain Christian Norgaard and could yet lose starting striker Yoanne Wissa as well. It feels like too much all at once and could well result in the Bees losing their place in the top-flight.

Getty'City's signings have been a little strange'

Sean Walsh: The case for Manchester City improving on last season is that Pep Guardiola is one of the best managers ever and they have too much quality to fail so spectacularly again. That said, the Catalan coach is already talking of taking a post-Etihad sabbatical, while their signings have been a little strange. They'll need Rodri to get back up to speed to compete for the title again.

'We must fix this fast' – Gabriel Milito calls out Chivas after second loss in three games in Liga MX

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Chivas suffered their second loss in the Apertura 2025 after falling 1-0 away to Santos Laguna, prompting Gabriel Milito to urge his players to stop making costly mistakes that are costing them matches and points.

“We have to keep working and try to change this streak, this pattern where every penalty or foul is hurting us,” Milito said. “A foul in the last minute of the Leagues Cup, a foul in the 92nd minute that led to a goal, a penalty in the first match against León, and today a foul and penalty here against Santos Laguna."

The Rebaño also exited the group stage of the Leagues Cup, increasing media pressure on the Argentine coach.

"It’s too much punishment, but we have to recognize that many fouls are avoidable and cost us points and games. It’s not always easy to score goals," he insisted. "The team tried, we created chances.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Milito hasn’t had the start he hoped for with Chivas. Despite a strong preseason with the team, the reality of the official matches he’s coached so far in Guadalajara has been different. The Argentine’s record stands at two wins, one draw, and three losses. While the numbers aren’t ideal, there have been some positive signs on the field.

Still, in Chivas, that’s not enough.

    WHAT GABRIEL MILITO SAID

Javier 'Chicharito' Hernández has yet to see playing time in the Apertura 2025, nor did he appear in the Leagues Cup. Milito insists the striker isn't available due to injury and doesn't believe the team's current form is down to his absence.

“Javier isn’t available because he’s injured. He has an injury that will keep him out for about five to six weeks. I don’t believe the team’s struggles are linked to the absence of any single player,” said the Argentine coach.

One more step for Cristiano Ronaldo! Al-Nassr beat Al-Ittihad to reach Saudi Super Cup final despite stupid Sadio Mane red card as CR7 shows unselfish side for Joao Felix's winning goal

Cristiano Ronaldo and Joao Felix led Al-Nassr to a 2-1 victory over Al-Ittihad in the Saudi Super Cup semi-finals despite a red card to Sadio Mane.

An end-to-end first half brought plenty of drama, starting in the opening minutes when Al-Nassr goalkeeper Bento presented Karim Benzema with a glorious opportunity. The stopper inexplicably passed the ball straight to the Frenchman on the edge of the penalty area and will have been relieved to see him drag a low shot wide of the post.

The action then switched to the other end and saw Al-Nassr take the lead through Mane. A cross from Marcelo Brozovic found the Senegal star with time and space in the box, and his turn and shot somehow managed to beat goalkeeper Hamed Al-Shanqiti, who will feel he should have done better after getting a hand to the ball.

Yet Al-Nassr's lead lasted just six minutes as Al-Ittihad swiftly hit back through Steven Bergwijn. A nicely worked move down the left flank culminated with the ball being cut back to Bergwijn to fire a low shot past Bento to make it 1-1.

Jorge Jesus's side then suffered more misery as Mane was sent off to leave Al-Nassr down to 10 men. The Senegal star was handed his marching orders on 25 minutes after challenging for the ball in the penalty area and stupidly stamping on Al-Shanqiti.

Despite being a man down, Al-Nassr went ahead on the hour when Ronaldo and Joao Felix combined. Al-Nassr's captain beat the offside trap after being sent through on goal and showed his unselfish side by rolling the ball across goal for Felix to tap into an empty net.

Felix then thought he'd sealed the game for Nassr after drilling home his second minutes later, but the goal was ruled out after Ronaldo was penalised for a trip on Fabinho.

Yet Al-Nassr still managed to comfortably hold on for an important win, putting Ronaldo one step closer to winning his first title with the Saudi Pro League side.

Al-Nassr looked doomed after going down to 10 men with only 25 minutes on the clock but had summer signing Felix to thank for the win. The Portugal international had the simple task of tapping home the winner and was a little unfortunate to see another goal ruled out shortly afterwards. Felix has had a tough few seasons but was a handful here and is enjoying a bright start to life with the Saudi Pro League side.

Getty Images SportTHE BIG LOSER

Mane went from hero to villain for Al-Nassr in an action-packed first half. The Senegal star opened the scoring in the match but was handed his marching orders just 15 minutes later. The Al-Nassr star contested the decision but clearly left his foot in on goalkeeper Al-Shanqiti and can have few complaints about the decision, which left his team a man down with plenty of football still to play.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Per Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are continuing to pursue a double deal to sign Simons and Garnacho from RB Leipzig and Manchester United respectively but they need to sell players first. Christopher Nkunku is in talks with Bayern Munich over a summer move, while the club also want to move Nicolas Jackson out of the club to free up squad space for the duo. They have thus far failed to receive any bids for the striker, who has been linked with Newcastle.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Chelsea have made significant moves in the transfer window this summer, signing Liam Delap, Jamie Gittens, Jorrel Hato, and Joao Pedro, and are searching for further attacking reinforcements. Nevertheless, dominoes need to fall for the deals to happen.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

The Blues start their season this weekend, against Crystal Palace, but their pursuits of Simons and Garnacho are likely to drag until the end of the transfer window, given the lack of movement over Jackson's future, and the ongoing Nkunku talks.

Dani Ceballos' 'last dance?' Real Madrid star hints at summer exit after La Liga win against Real Oviedo

Dani Ceballos has hinted at his potential exit from Real Madrid in this ongoing summer window.

Ceballos hints at exit this summerMidfielder was previously eager to staySpaniard has offers from Champions League teamsFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

After appearing in a cameo against Oviedo in Real's latest La Liga fixture, Ceballos posted a story on Instagram with the caption "Last dance" and a thank-you emoji. This suggests a potential shift in base for the 29-year-old, who has offers from Champions League outfits.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

With Xabi Alonso taking charge at Madrid, Ceballos seems to have fallen in the pecking order. He is the sixth midfielder on the list, alongside injured players like Jude Bellingham and Eduardo Camavinga. The manager has preferred Aurelien Tchouameni and Federico Valverde, along with Arda Guler, whom he has converted into a central role. This suggests it will be tough for Ceballos to get a place in the starting lineup. In the 3-0 win against Oviedo, he was subbed on to the pitch in the 86th minute, and against Osasuna, he joined the action in the 90th minute.

TELL ME MORE

Ceballos, despite having offers, wanted to stay at Real and fight for his place. He was aware that if he could convince Alonso for a place in the lineup, it would be smoother for him to convince Luis de la Fuente to offer him a place in the upcoming World Cup. However, as things stand, unless Ceballos moves to a different club and gets sufficient minutes, his dreams of featuring in the 2026 World Cup will remain in jeopardy. Madrid are not reluctant to keep him and will be open to offers between €15-20 million (£13m/$18m to £17m/$23m).
