Aston Villa set to make January approach for £52m Champions League "monster"

Aston Villa are now set to make an approach to sign a “monster” in the January transfer window, but it could take a huge bid to get a deal done.

Villa looking to strengthen defence in 2026

After a concerning start to the season, Villa’s form has turned around dramatically over the past few weeks, winning their last four matches on the spin in all competitions, which has silenced the premature questions about Unai Emery’s future.

However, Emery is likely to still have concerns about some of the results his side have been on the receiving end of, with a 3-0 defeat at home against Crystal Palace at the beginning of September arguably a low point.

As such, it would make sense for the manager to strengthen his squad in the upcoming transfer window, but it remains to be seen whether there will be any new entrants to the list of their most expensive signings, considering they are known to be treading a fine line with PSR.

According to a report from Sabah (via Sport Witness), one position in which Aston Villa are looking to strengthen is right-back, with it being revealed they are set to make an approach for Galatasaray defender Wilfried Singo, although a deal could be expensive.

Singo has a €60m (£52m) release clause included in his contract, and the Turkish side are looking to receive at least €50m (£44m), with it currently unclear whether Villa would be willing to shell out that much.

There are some signs the 24-year-old could be worth the money, having caught the eye in the Champions League this season, impressing in his side’s 1-0 victory over Liverpool at the end of September.

"Monster" Singo could be solid Matty Cash heir

Matty Cash has been a key player for the Villans across the last six seasons, making 190 appearances, but there are some signs the Galatasaray right-back could be an upgrade, having outperformed the Pole across a number of key metrics over the past year.

Not only is the Ivorian more of an attacking threat, but he has also impressed from a defensive point of view, showcasing that he is a well-rounded full-back.

Scout Ben Mattinson has also praised the Galatasaray star for his physical attributes and ability to drive the ball forward.

As such, while the asking price of around £44m is expensive, Singo is clearly a top full-back, so it may be worth the Aston Villa board sanctioning a big offer.

"Could ruin him" – Nicky Butt warns "incredible" manager not to take Man Utd job

Nicky Butt has warned a manager who Gary Neville called “incredible” not to take the Manchester United job, saying “it could ruin him.”

Respite for Amorim after Sunderland victory

The 2-0 victory over newly-promoted Sunderland prior to the international break provided Ruben Amorim with a little respite, but there will be much tougher tests to come in the coming weeks, with a daunting trip to Anfield this Sunday up first.

There has been plenty of speculation about Amorim’s future already this season, with Jamie Carragher suggesting the writing may already be on the wall, given that the 40-year-old simply isn’t a good fit for Man United.

Carragher said: “What he did at Sporting Lisbon was fantastic. But bringing a manager like that in with the system he plays I don’t think ever suited a club like Manchester United with the traditions at Manchester United.

“We are just waiting for the inevitable, unfortunately, because you don’t want people to lose their jobs. But this [Amorim’s time in charge] has to end as quickly as possible.”

It appears as though Sir Jim Ratcliffe is very committed to the Amorim project, however, having recently insisted he wants to give the Portuguese coach three years to prove himself.

That said, if there is not a major improvement in performances and results, it is very difficult to envisage the United boss lasting that long, and the rumour mill about potential replacements is already in full swing.

Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Paddy McGuinness recently asked Paul Scholes and Butt whether they’d like to see Ole Gunnar Solskjaer return to Old Trafford, but the latter was emphatic in his response, stating his former teammate shouldn’t consider the move.

The former Man United midfielder said: “The hard thing for Ole would be, if you come back the second time – it could ruin him. It won’t because of his legacy at the football club, but you could bring prime Sir Alex or Jose in at the minute and they wouldn’t be able to do anything with that squad. So for me, I hope it wouldn’t happen.”

Appointing "incredible" Ole would be step backwards

It is undeniable that Ole is one of the Red Devils’ best managers post Sir Alex Ferguson, with the Norwegian leading them to a second-placed finish in the 2020-21 campaign, but it would be a step backwards to bring him back to Old Trafford.

Vivell's a fan: Man Utd devise plan to sign "elite" £40m midfielder with Wharton

The Red Devils are very keen on bringing in a new midfielder.

ByDominic Lund Oct 14, 2025

United sacked the 52-year-old back in November 2021, after failing to win a trophy in nearly three years as manager, and he has since failed to make an impact at Besiktas, with the Turkish club dismissing the former striker back in August.

As such, despite being lauded as “incredible” by Neville for the job he did at Man United last time around, Ole shouldn’t be considered as a replacement for Amorim, who rakes in £6.5m-per-year.

Chelsea player ratings vs Wolves: Jamie Gittens and Andrey Santos star as Blues survive second-half fightback to advance in Carabao Cup

Chelsea returned to winning ways on Wednesday, but they made hard work of their victory at Wolves. Goals from Andrey Santos, Tyrique George, Estevao Willian and Jamie Gittens saw the Blues claim a narrow 4-3 win in the Midlands to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Enzo Maresca named a much-changed side for the game at Molineux with the likes of Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez and Reece James starting from the bench, but the visitors raced into a three-goal lead in he first half, though they also benefited from some poor defending by the home side.

Tosin Arokodare and David Moller Wolfe (twice) netted for Wolves after the restart while Liam Delap was sent off to set up a nervy finish, but it was too little, too late for Vitor Pereira's side as they fell to a third successive defeat to amp up the pressure on the Portuguese boss.

    Filip Jorgensen (5/10):

Saw little action in the first half but conceded three of the four shots he faced.

Got forward well down the right, but was out of position for Wolves' first goal before coming off after an hour.

    Josh Acheampong (4/10):

After a solid first half, was caught ball watching for Arokodare's strike just minutes after the restart.

    Tosin Adarabioyo (5/10):

Hardly the most convincing performance from Chelsea's most experienced player.

    Jorrel Hato (6/10):

Shifted to centre-back on the hour mark. Largely unfazed despite sustained second half pressure by Wolves.

    Romeo Lavia (5/10):

At fault for Arokodare's goal and was withdrawn on the hour mark.

Settled some early Chelsea nerves with the opening goal. Pressed Lopez brilliantly to set up Estevao's first-half goal, too.

    Attack

    Estevao Willian (7/10):

Carded midway through the first half but made amends with a fine dink over Jose Sa shortly before the break. Taken off after an hour.

    Facundo Buonanotte (6/10):

While the Chelsea attack clicked, Buonanotte struggled to gain a foothold.

    Jamie Gittens (9/10):

Provided the assist for Santos' early opener and added a second having turned provider for George 10 minutes later. Scored Chelsea's fourth with a stunning strike to seal victory.

    Tyrique George (7/10):

Doubled Chelsea's advantage in the 15th minute having been picked out by Gittens. Should have added a second minutes later.

    Pedro Neto (5/10):

Did little of note at his old stomping ground.

    Moises Caicedo (N/A):

Brought on with five minutes to play.

    Enzo Maresca (5/10):

He called for consistency after the Sunderland defeat, and while he isn't helped by an inexperienced squad, the Italian struggled with his game management.

Rashid and Omarzai set to miss MLC 2025

Rashid Khan was MI New York’s best bowler in 2024•Peter Della Penna

Afghanistan allrounder Rashid Khan will be absent from the 2025 edition of Major League Cricket (MLC). ESPNcricinfo has learned that Rashid, who plays for MI New York, has opted out of the tournament, which gets underway on Friday, to take a break.Rashid’s absence is bound to hurt MINY as he was their best bowler in the last MLC season, picking up ten wickets at 6.15, even though his team finished fourth with just two wins in seven matches. Rashid was last in action in IPL 2025 for Gujarat Titans, who lost in the Eliminator against Mumbai Indians. It was Rashid’s poorest IPL season as he got just nine wickets at an economy rate of 9.34 and average of 57.11. It was the first time his wickets column had failed register double-digits since his IPL debut in 2017.Batters dominated Rashid throughout the season as he conceded 33 sixes, the most by any bowler in a single edition of the IPL.Related

In a further jolt to MINY’s plans, another Afghanistan allrounder – Azmatullah Omarzai – is also set to miss MLC as he, too, is learned to have taken a break from playing. Like Rashid, Omarzai, too, last played in the IPL where he was part of Punjab Kings, who finished runners-up.In some good news for the MLC, though, Naveen-ul-Haq (MINY), Noor Ahmed (Texas Super Kings) and Waqar Salamkheil (Seattle Orcas) have joined their respective teams after doubts emerged over the participation of Afghanistan players owing to the travel ban imposed by the US government on entry of citizens from 12 countries. The ban became effective this week with Afghanistan among the 12 countries in the list. The others are: Burma, Chad, Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. Two other Afghanistan players – Gulbadin Naib and Fazalhaq Farooqi, who play for Orcas – are understood to be awaiting visas to travel to play in MLC.

Mitchell Santner triggers Kent collapse

Surrey 193 for 7 (Evans 62*, Pope 53, Stewart 3-27) beat Kent 151 for 9 (Crawley 46, Santner 3-28) by 42 runsSurrey have thrashed the Kent Spitfires by 42 runs in the Vitality Blast at Canterbury.Surrey posted 193 for 7, Ollie Pope giving them a platform with 53 before Laurie Evans assaulted the death overs, making an unbeaten 62 from just 26 balls.England’s Zak Crawley hit 45 but the Spitfires crashed from 109 for 2 to 118 for 8, losing six wickets in a cataclysmic 17-ball spell. Mitchell Santner took 3 for 28 and Kent eventually closed on 151 for nine. Grant Stewart had Kent’s best bowling figures with 3-27.Surrey openers Pope and Dom Sibley put on 83 for the first wicket, after being put in. The former dominated the strike, reaching 50 with a swept single off Matt Parkinson and hitting one six off Joe Denly over the retirement flats on the Old Dover Road. The partnership wasn’t broken till the 10th over, when Pope chipped Parkinson to Denly at cover, but Kent then put the brakes on: Jason Roy was stifled and eventually holed out to Parkinson, getting caught on the boundary by Tom Rogers for four off ten balls.Sibley went for 36, trying to ramp Stewart but hitting him straight to Parkinson at sort third man and Sam Curran went in the same over, driving limply to Denly for one.Leaning missed a difficult chance to catch Evans off Stewart when he was on 15 and although the assault looked set to begin with five overs left when Santner dumped Wes Agar back over his head for six, he was out for 13 two balls later when he tried to repeat the trick and skied Agar to Rogers just inside the rope.Surrey were only on 128 for 5 after 16 overs, but Evans hit Rogers for 29 in the 17th. He reached his 50 from 20 balls, in the 19th over, before Ollie Sykes went for 15, run out by Leaning chasing a second. Chris Jordan then holed out to Stewart and was caught by Rogers for a duck. The chase got off to a bad start when Daniel Bell-Drummond was run out for two by a direct hit from Curran in the second over. Tawanda Muyeye made 26 from 20 balls but he swiped Santner to Sibley on the cow corner boundary. While Crawley and Denly were at the crease, however, Kent looked a decent bet, until a catastrophic spell saw them lose three wickets in three balls. At the end of the 13th Santner got Denly for 28, caught by Jordan at long off and Rogers for a golden duck, to a horrific shot that looped straight to Curran at midwicket. Crawley was then run out chasing a second off the first ball of the 14th and Sam Billings went in the same over, hitting Smith straight to Jordan.Over 4,537 were in the Spitfire Ground but the atmosphere had been killed stone dead, well before Stewart was out for two, hitting Curran to Roy at long off. Curran then had Leaning caught by Sibley four and Wes Agar was run out by Jordan for five off his own bowling. This left last-wicket duo Fred Klaassen and Parkinson with impossible task of hitting 49 off Jordan Clark’s final over.

Bartlett blitz gives Unicorns against-the-odds win over MI New York

For the longest time, MI New York seemed to have done enough to win two points, but then Xavier Bartlett smashed them for a 25-ball 59 not out

ESPNcricinfo staff16-Jun-2025Xavier Bartlett walked out at No. 8 against MI New York, with San Francisco Unicorns at 108 for 6 in 12.2 overs, still 74 behind. Before this game, he had a T20 batting average of 14.10 and a strike rate of 108.50. On Sunday, he smashed a bowling attack headlined by Trent Boult, Naveen-ul-Haq, Michael Bracewell and Ehsan Adil for four fours and five sixes on his way to an unbeaten 25-ball 59. And with it, Unicorns snatched a win that was MINY’s for the taking, and were three wins out of three and strong at the top of the MLC 2025 points table. For Unicorns, chasing 183 for victory, Finn Allen was gone in the second over, Jake Fraser-McGurk and Sanjay Krishnamurthi in the third and fourth respectively, and Cooper Connolly on the last ball of the powerplay, which ended at 42 for 4. MINY were very much on top and it felt like their first win of the season was just a matter of time. But Hassan Khan, who had earlier conceded 54 runs in his four overs, then joined Tim Seifert. Seifert had been waging a lone battle till then, but Hassan provided the impetus, contributing 43 runs in 17 balls in their 64-run stand in just 31 balls. Despite that, when Bartlett walked out and Unicorns lost captain Corey Anderson soon after, MINY were still favourites. Till they were hit by the Bartlett blitz.Earlier, after being asked to bat, MINY rode on Quinton de Kock’s 38-ball 63 at the top of the order and cameos from Kieron Pollard and Sunny Patel to get to a competitive total.De Kock scored his 63 from just 38 balls, but there was little from the other end while he was around, and when he was dismissed in the 12th over, with the scoreboard reading 102 for 4, it seemed like MINY would stop under par. But Pollard slammed four sixes in a nine-ball 16th over from Hassan to turn the tide and Sunny chipped in with an unbeaten 11-ball 20 from No. 8. For a long time, it seemed like the total would be enough but Bartlett ensured it wasn’t so.

"No doubt" – Alan Shearer says Berta "paid too much" for Arsenal summer signing

Arsenal chief Andrea Berta was a very busy man over his first summer transfer window at the club, but now one of his decisions is being seriously questioned.

Arsenal record highest summer net spend to back Mikel Arteta

The arrivals of Kepa, Cristhian Mosquera, Piero Hincapie, Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard, Noni Madueke, Eberechi Eze and Viktor Gyokeres, who all cost a combined £267 million, will undoubtedly play a major role as Mikel Arteta attempts to end the club’s long wait for a Premier League title.

It’s been a near-perfect start for Arteta’s side this season, with the Gunners’ imperious defence largely to thank for Arsenal sitting three points clear of Man City at the top of the table.

William Saliba, who recently signed a new deal until 2030, and Gabriel Magalhaes have displayed once again why they’re two of world football’s best centre-backs right now, with David Raya also awarded improved terms after establishing him as one of Europe’s best goalkeepers.

Their solidity was once again evident last weekend as Arsenal battled to a narrow 1-0 win at Fulham, and they hugely profited off yet another dead-ball situation when Leandro Trossard tapped home the only goal of the game from a corner.

While Arsenal’s backline has made all the headlines, the same cannot be said of summer signing Gyokeres, who was brought in to be their main vocal point of attack after two seasons free-scoring in Portugal.

The Sweden international’s arrival for an initial £55 million from Sporting CP followed his extraordinary haul of 97 goals in just over a century of appearances for the Primeira Liga side, but Gyokeres hasn’t exactly replicated that form thus far.

The 27-year-old, after failing to score again versus Fulham, is now on a seven-game goalless run in all competitions, but this could well change at home to Atlético Madrid in the Champions League tonight.

Gyokeres was repeatedly denied by ex-Arsenal keeper Bernd Leno at Craven Cottage on Saturday, and his intent to trouble opposing shot-stoppers has been crystal clear from the get-go.

However, his numbers haven’t reflected this, with the Premier League’s all-time top scorer, Alan Shearer, now sharing his verdict on Berta’s big-name summer buy.

Alan Shearer says Berta paid over the odds to sign Viktor Gyokeres for Arsenal

Speaking on the Rest is Football podcast, Shearer insists that Berta paid over the odds to sign Gyokeres for Arsenal, demanding more from the ex-Coventry City forward.

However, while Shearer was critical of Gyokeres’ return, he does explain that the Scandinavian brings something game-changing to the Emirates.

Gyokeres’ ability to hold up the ball and link play allows Arsenal’s creative midfielders to find space and launch attacks, even if he hasn’t yet consistently finished chances.

Moreover, Arteta’s new number nine is still adapting to the Premier League’s pace and intensity, which often takes time, and Gary Neville has tipped the player to “bully” lesser sides once he finds his feet in England.

With regular game time and continued development, Gyokeres’ goal tally is expected to improve, especially taking into account the chances he’s already created for himself on regular occasions in games.

That being said, with Kai Havertz expected to return from injury earlier than anticipated, Gyokeres could be looking over his shoulder if the goals don’t come more regularly soon.

James Coles makes 150 as Sussex dispense with any jeopardy

Warwickshire battle through six wickets for Rocchiccioli but stalemate beckons on final day

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay01-Jul-2025 Warwickshire 415 (Yates 93, Hain 87, Barnard 66, Crocombe 3-82) and 88 for 1 trail Sussex 533 (Hughes 151, Coles 150, Rocchiccioli 6-173) by 30 runsJames Coles made 150 and there were six wickets for Warwickshire offspinner Corey Rocchiccioli but despite their efforts Sussex’s Rothesay County Championship match against Warwickshire is heading for a draw.Coles’ second successive Championship hundred helped Sussex take a first-innings lead of 118 after their first innings ended on 433, 20 minutes after tea on day three. It left Warwickshire with 24 overs to get through to stumps and they closed on 88 for one, losing Rob Yates for 11 when he inside-edged a fine ball from Ollie Robinson onto his middle stump.Off-spinner Jack Carson nearly broke through late on but Daniel Ibrahim put down a tough chance at short leg to reprieve skipper Alex Davies, who has so far added 66 with Tom Latham as Warwickshire closed 30 runs in arrears. But the effects of a slow pitch and the Kookaburra ball are likely to ensure a stalemate, especially with some rain in the forecast on the final day.Coles, 21, made an unbeaten 148 against Durham last week and followed it up with his sixth first-class hundred, sharing stands of 73 with Dan Ibrahim (36), 59 with John Simpson (30) and 50 with Fynn Hudson-Prentice (45) before he was sixth out, caught behind via an inside edge off Ethan Bamber. He had to be patient for long periods. Even without Chris Rushworth, who injured his hamstring after sending down just three overs on the second day, Warwickshire bowled diligently and fielded well. Coles, unbeaten on 50 overnight, brought up his hundred with an edge to the third boundary just before lunch, but it was one of the few unconvincing shots he played in nearly six-and-a-half hours at the crease when he faced 294 balls, an outstanding effort on another day of sweltering heat at Hove. He hit 19 fours and pulled a six into the pavilion off Oliver Hannon-Dalby.Warwickshire’s hard work in the field was epitomised by Rocchiccioli, the Western Australian who arrived in England for his first taste of county cricket last month having taken 84 Sheffield Shield wickets since the 2023-4 season. Here he followed up his six wickets on debut against Somerset at Edgbaston last week with six more. Three came on the second day and he had to plug away from the sea end until his 18th over today for further reward when Carson (28) was smartly taken at leg slip.Rocchiccioli then polished off the innings by removing Gurinder Sandhu and Henry Crocombe with successive deliveries. The 328 balls he sent down was the most in an innings by a Warwickshire bowler since Ashley Giles bowled 68.3 overs against Yorkshire at Headingley in 1996. He just about had the strength to doff his cap to acknowledge the appreciative applause of the crowd after he’d sent down his 50th over.Bamber was the pick of Warwickshire’s seam attack, picking up Ibrahim who played around a straight one as well as Coles and there was a wicket apiece for Yates and Ed Barnard.
