Thailand claim historic win over Bangladesh, Delany stars for Ireland

Netherlands suffer 7 for 12 collapse from winning position while Francisca Chipare rescued Zimbabwe in a thriller against USA

Sornnarin Tippoch’s 69 and 1 for 35 and Nattaya Boochatham’s 5 for 26 proved pivotal in Thailand’s historic 16-run DLS-decided Group B win over Bangladesh in the Women’s World Cup Qualifiers. This was their second one-day victory over a team with ODI status, the first one having come earlier in the tournament, over Zimbabwe.

Given Thailand don’t yet hold ODI status, their victory against Bangladesh has strengthened their chance to seal a Super Six berth in the qualifier, which would ensure them the ODI cachet by virtue of gaining automatic qualification for the next cycle of the expanded, ten-team ICC Women’s Championship.Chasing 177, Tippoch strung a 97 opening stand with Natthakan Chantham (37 off 69), hitting seven fours in her 113-ball knock. Both openers, however, fell in the space of 5.1 overs. By the time rain intervened, Thailand were 132 for 2 in 39.2 overs, 15 runs ahead of their DLS cutoff of 117.Earlier, Thailand’s decision to bowl paid dividends as restricted Bangladesh, unbeaten in the competition until today, to 176 for 8 off 50 overs. Fargana Hoque (51), Murshida Khatun (46), Lata Mondal (29), and Rumana Ahmed (27) were the only batters to make double-digit scores.Thailand trail first-placed Bangladesh, who have a superior net run rate, by one spot on the Group B points table, with both on four points apiece from two wins out of three games.Laura Delany and Orla Prendergast were the stars of the show for Ireland as they defended a total of 199 against Netherlands in the Women’s World Cup qualifiers at Harare. Delany top-scored with 75 even as the rest of her line-up tumbled around her. The 21-year old Dutch legspinner Silver Siegers picked up 4 for 24 to set up what looked like a straightforward chase and for the longest time it was. They were 158 for 3 in the 43rd over with victory very much in sight when Delany popped up with the run-out of Netherlands captain Heather Siegers. That triggered a collapse – seven wickets for 12 runs, three of them to Prendergast – as the game turned completely on its head.Francisca Chipare rescued a Zimbabwe side that was teetering on the brink of defeat, the No. 11 cracking three fours in a 15-ball innings to secure a nail-biting one-wicket victory. USA could only post a total of 131, where their top-scorer was the extras with 23, but their bowlers rallied hard to make a match of it. The 31-year old seamer Moksha Chaudhary grabbed four wickets for herself as Zimbabwe slumped from 73 for 2 to 97 for 8. But even as the game seemed lost, up stepped a most unlikely hero. The 23-year old Chipare (16*) was one of only two players in the entire game with a strike rate better than run-a-ball.

Billings back with Bayliss and Hales at Sydney Thunder

Englishman keen to push for a BBL title after missing out last season but his availability will depend on England selection

Sydney Thunder are putting the band back together with England batter Sam Billings re-signing for another stint in the BBL, this time under new coach and former England mentor Trevor Bayliss.Billings’ return comes hot on the heels of Alex Hales, with the England duo to be reunited with Bayliss after playing previously at Thunder under Shane Bond.Billings was a popular edition at Thunder last season, having been encouraged to sign by his friend and former Thunder captain Shane Watson. He made 260 runs at a strike-rate of 142.85 in 10 innings for the Thunder last season, including two half-centuries. One of those was a stunning 48-ball 83 that threatened to single-handedly steal a game off Perth Scorchers in Perth.Billings said he was keen to push for a title this season after the Thunder lost the Knockout last season to Brisbane Heat.”I think the most exciting thing about coming back to the Thunder is the group of young players that complement the older, experienced heads,” Billings said. “Hales is obviously a high-quality player and we have all seen what he can do.”In my first experiences with Sydney Thunder last season there were obviously positive signs but we didn’t finish where we wanted to, or could finish. There is no reason we can’t take another step forward and go close to the title.”Billings’ availability for Thunder will likely be dictated by his England duties. Although he is yet to play a Test match he has been called into England’s Test squad this summer and with England set to bring an extended squad to Australia for the Ashes and coinciding England Lions fixture he could well be unavailable until late in the BBL season. England also have a one-day series against West Indies in late January.

Everton could hire "fantastic" new manager who’d revive Calvert-Lewin

Everton have got off to a terrible start this campaign, only picking up one point in their opening five Premier League games, losing their first four before drawing 1-1 with Leicester City last weekend.

This leaves the Toffees 19th in the Premier League, and therefore, Sean Dyche could find himself in a spot of bother, with incoming owner Dan Friedkin already looking at alternatives. Everton face Crystal Palace at Goodison Park this weekend, and another loss could spell the end for Dyche.

Everton manager Sean Dyche

Everton have conceded 14 goals this season, only scoring five in their opening five fixtures, but one name in imparticular on their shortlist has Premier League experience, and could really turn things around for the Toffees.

Everton searching for Dyche alternatives

According to GIVEMESPORT, Graham Potter is one of the main names being ‘discussed’ by Friedkin if Everton are to part ways with Dyche.

Potter has managed Brighton and Chelsea before in the Premier League and could help change and establish a new identity at the Merseyside club.

Praised as being “fantastic” for his job at Brighton by Wolves boss Gary O’Neil in the past, Potter’s success with the Seagulls earned him a big move to Chelsea back in 2022. The Englishman took charge of 31 games for the Blues, winning 12, drawing eight, and losing 11, averaging 1.42 points per match.

Potter suffered from Chelsea going through a big overhaul at the time, with new owners, lots of players both joining and leaving the club and many instances both on and off the field for him to deal with.

However, by stepping back into management at Everton, he could help steer them away from relegation, improving their terrible possession average, and giving them a new identity.

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast's Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

Potter to revitalise Calvert-Lewin

Everton have struggled to create xG this season, only generating 6.29 over their five games so far this season – the fourth lowest in the league).

Their direct approach under Dyche is not allowing them to create high-value chances, and score enough goals to win games, especially with their leaky defensive record.

Graham Potter as Chelsea manager

Potter has always had teams that generate decent xG values, with his Brighton side creating 49.57 xG in their 2021/22 campaign, and his Chelsea side generating 51.89 xG in 2022/23.

An improvement in xG creation, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s main responsibility being to finish chances in the box, and make life tough for defenders in the penalty area, could see him revive his best numbers, which Everton fans haven’t seen since 2020/21.

In the 2019/20 season, when Calvert-Lewin scored 15 goals – 13 coming in the Premier League – Everton generated 53.71 xG, giving the Toffees’ star forward more chances in and around the box to finish off attack, and put the ball in the back of the net.

In comparison, during the 2021/22 season, Everton only generated 44.47 xG in the league, with Calvert-Lewin only managing five goals.

This then led to his worst season, despite Everton generating better xG numbers with 48.65 xG, his confidence was low, injuries were hampering him, and the striker was missing his clinical nature in the box.

dominic-calvert-lewin-everton-beto-jack-harrison-dyche-luton-bournemouth

However, as Calvert-Lewin is starting to find his mojo in the penalty area again, and will have confidence in his finishing ability, having scored two goals already this season with only 6.29 xG generated by the team, adding Potter who could help Everton keep more of the ball, and create higher value chances.

In turn, this could allow the attacker to explode again with another 15 + goal term, potentially firing Everton away from the relegation zone.

Newcastle hit gold with "world-class" star worth more than Guehi & Gordon

Newcastle United bore venom to rival that of Liverpool and Manchester City supporters when Manchester United belied their wretched 2023/24 campaign to win the FA Cup.

Erik ten Hag with the FA Cup trophy.

It was a momentous, job-saving result for Erik ten Hag, whose Red Devils had finished eighth in the Premier League and were set to miss out on European competition, save for an unlikely victory against Pep Guardiola’s winning machine.

The pertinence of this thread in Newcastle’s case? It meant that Eddie Howe’s Magpies, who had finished seventh, were pulled from their continental spot, with sixth-place Chelsea demoted to the Conference League and Man United earning a Europa League place.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe

It carried the air of injustice that was a bleak fit for a campaign of suffering on Tyneside. Newcastle had dazzled during the previous term, fast rising in the Premier League and beating Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea to a top-four spot.

Champions League fever held the bouncing city in its virulent grip, but Newcastle slumped out with a bottom-placed finish following some… you guessed it, injustice during a match against Paris Saint-Germain, with Kylian Mbappe scoring a more than contentious penalty to rise from the deserved jaw of defeat.

Jamaal Lascelles

Injuries lashed at St. James’ Park like an erratic lightning storm, heedless of Newcasle’s brilliant rise and precluding any chance of swerving second-season syndrome. Sven Botman, so commanding, so strong, is currently jailed to the sidelines by an ACL injury that will keep him out until the end of 2024 – or longer.

It was paramount that he was replaced…

Newcastle's failure to sign Marc Guehi

One bid, two bids, three bids, four. Newcastle proved to be a day late and a dollar short in their interminable summer quest to sign Marc Guehi, who is still situated in the Crystal Palace backline.

In all honesty, there are several ways to look at it. Palace chairman Steve Parish had all the negotiating leeway of a boulder blocking a cave, refusing to budge on his side’s £70m valuation of the England international before actually raising his price to £75m at the eleventh hour.

Newcastle teetered at the precipice of PSR rules this summer and were rightly reluctant to pay what they believed was an extortionate figure, but fans have been frustrated by the myopic vision that has failed to identify and act on signing an alternative.

England defender Marc Guehi

Oh sure, Lloyd Kelly was signed earlier in the year, agreeing to join Newcastle on a free transfer following the expiry of his Bournemouth contract in June, but the left-sided defender was needed regardless of Botman’s injury. A “monster” such as Guehi, as he has been dubbed by reporter Bobby Manzi, would have slotted in just so.

Guehi has been a key figure at Selhurst Park for several years but rose to loftier prominence following a brilliant Euro 2024 campaign with England, who were toothless in attack but certainly steely in defence.

Newcastle no doubt had various irons in the fire throughout the window, but that means little to supporters and indeed the manager, whose squad hasn’t really improved all that much.

That said, keeping hold of United’s holy trinity was the principal objective, and was achieved at that. Anthony Gordon continues to serve on the wing despite the interest of his boyhood club, Liverpool; Alexander Isak’s first-rate goalscoring provides a focal source once more.

Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak

The former, Gordon, was at the centre of interest from Liverpool in the summer and valued at £75m, which is quite a thing. However, he’s not the most highly-valued United first-teamer.

That would be Bruno Guimarães, the Magpies’ prized piece of silver.

Why keeping Bruno Guimarães was so important

Guimarães joined Newcastle from Lyon in a £40m deal, in January 2023. You could call him a torch-bearer if you like, for he was one of the first to arrive in a PIF-backed world and has been as influential as any in a rising football team.

Hailed as a “world-class” player by talent scout Jacek Kulig, the deep-sitting midfielder truly deserves all the praise directed his way, having chalked up 111 appearances, notching 33 goal contributions.

Newcastle's Bruno Guimaraes

His fiery presence, dribbling skills and ball-playing quality have provided Howe’s system with the most reliable of engines. As per FBref, the Brazil international ranks among the top 10% of central midfielders across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for goals scored and shot-creating actions, the top 9% for assists, the top 13% for progressive passes and the top 3% for progressive carries per 90.

A combative approach to the midfield craft is reflected through his duel success across his four Premier League campaigns, ruling with an iron fist that enables the attacking success of the likes of Gordon and Isak.

Guimarães is a jack of all trades – and he’s a master of all. With such a complete skillset, it’s no wonder that some of Europe’s finest outfits were interested in completing a transfer this summer.

Bruno Guimarães' market value in 2024

Guimarães had a £100m release clause inserted in his Newcastle contract, though this expired during the off-season, with potential suitors failing to meet it.

Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City had all been linked in different capacities, but his continuing presence in England’s northeast and ascendancy to the club’s captaincy has been music to the fanbase’s ears.

It also means that the powers that be are free to demand whatever they like for the South American, but it’s definitely not going to be anything lower than the expired release clause.

Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes

This means that Newcastle wield one of the most highly-valued players in the Premier League, some £25m more than Guehi and Gordon at the very least.

Newcastle’s wonderful six operates at an elite level, but he’s not a defender and his prowess doesn’t mean that failing to sign Guehi is fine, but it does mitigate the blow that he’s still at the club, donning the armband.

Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes

The £160k-per-week ace – Newcastle’s highest earner – would prove to be one of the standout performers at an Arsenal, a Liverpool, a Manchester City, but he’s quite happy as the linchpin of his current club.

Guehi might remain in the capital, but with a more expensive and more influential player in Guimarães passing the summer window without a transfer, Howe’s side will be alright.

Spurs flop was sold by Conte in 2022, now he’s outscoring Solanke

Tottenham Hotspur have endured a mixed start to the Premier League this season, with a draw away to Leicester City, a win at home to Everton and a loss away to Newcastle United.

Ange Postecoglou's side have played some entertaining football so far, and in both away games, they created enough chances to pick up all six points, but as it did last season, a lack of finishing ability cost them.

That said, the club's new £65m striker, Dominic Solanke, has missed the last two matches through injury, so perhaps the team's lack of cutting edge shouldn't be massively surprising.

After all, the former Bournemouth star was on fire last year and will surely score a mountain of goals in this Lilywhites set-up, although he has been outscored by a former Spurs flop over the last couple of campaigns.

Solanke's recent record

So, after ending last season as only the seventh-highest scoring team in the league, Tottenham decided to go out and splash the cash on Solanke this summer, with the hope that he'll be the striker to help turn the endless chances created by Postecoglou's system into a whole heap of goals, and based off last season, they might be right.

For example, in his 42 appearances for Bournemouth, the Englishman scored 21 goals and provided four assists, meaning he averaged a goal involvement once every 1.68 games for the Cherries. This impressive rate of return saw him finish joint-fourth in the Premier League's top goalscorers list, alongside Phil Foden and Ollie Watkins.

However, while he was incredible last season, he was simply okay the campaign prior, scoring seven goals and providing seven assists in 35 appearances for the South Coast club, equating to a slightly less impressive – for a striker – average of a goal involvement every 2.5 games.

Postecoglou and Co will be hoping that they get the Solanke of last season and not the one before that this year, although when you combine both campaigns, the former Liverpool ace has been outscored by a former Spurs flop who left the club a couple of years ago.

Bergwijn's recent record

Yes, the player in question is Dutch attacker Steven Bergwijn, who joined Spurs from Eredivisie side PSV Eindhoven in January 2020 for a fee in the region of £25m.

Tottenham Hotspur's Steven Bergwijn celebrates

The rapid dynamo spent two and a half years in North London, in which he made 83 appearances for the club, scoring eight goals and providing nine assists, but he could never cement himself in the starting lineup under Antonio Conte, so he returned to the Netherlands in summer 2022, joining Ajax for about £26m.

In the two campaigns since, the 35-capped international has been in scintillating form. For example, in 22/23, he scored 16 goals and provided six assists in 45 appearances, equating to an average of a goal involvement every 2.04 games.

He then reached another level last year, and in just 31 matches, he managed to score 13 goals and provide five assists, meaning he maintained a seriously impressive average of a goal involvement every 1.72 games.

This run of form led to an offer from Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad, and earlier this week, it was confirmed that he had moved to the uber-rich Middle Eastern league, much to the disdain of Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman.

In the end, it looks like Bergwijn's exit from Tottenham worked out for all parties, although with the Dutchman plying his trade in an even weaker league this season, he'll probably end up outscoring Solanke for another year.

Spurs hit gold on amazing signing who’s worth even more than Isak

It's rather safe to say that Tottenham don't particularly like travelling to St James' Park. It's been a bleak away fixture for the Lilywhites who just can't seem to defeat Newcastle United.

Their record in recent years has been dreadful, with that iconic 6-1 defeat where the Magpies ran rampant in the first half still rather fresh in the memory.

Spurs' fortunes were no better on Sunday afternoon, even if the performance was more convincing than in recent years.

On another day, Ange Postecoglou's side could quite easily have left Tyneside with all three points. They struck the bar, forced Nick Pope into some nervy moments and should probably have scored through Wilson Odobert. It said it all, however, that they had to rely on an own goal during the 2-1 loss.

Cristian Romero wasn't at the races and was caught out of position for both goals, notably for the second when Jacob Murphy was given the freedom of the pitch to run in behind and lay it on a plate for Alexander Isak.

Isak's performance in numbers against Spurs

The performance of Isak would no doubt have intrigued Postecoglou, particularly after the arrival of their own big-money striker this summer in the shape of Dominic Solanke.

Spurs were arguably stifled by the Englishman's injury on Sunday and lacked a focal point, someone to aim for in the box to take advantage of their constant second-half pressure.

As it happens, it was that man Isak who scored the winner. The Swede hasn't looked his normal self this term but he loves playing against Tottenham and added to his tally over the weekend. The finish was simple, tapping into an empty net from a matter of a few years after Murphy had taken Guglielmo Vicario out of the game.

Besides that, the centre-forward perhaps didn't have his best outing, winning just three of his 14 duels and giving away possession on ten occasions.

That said, the £60m-rated talent is one of the most menacing attackers in the division. His 21 goals in 30 Premier League matches last season says it all.

Postecoglou will no doubt hope that Solanke reaches those dizzy heights once fit and firing. The former Cherries star was prised away for a £65m fee, more than Isak's current valuation, as per Fotmob. He's not the only man in the white of Spurs who's worth more though.

Market Movers

Football FanCast's Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club's star player or biggest flop worth today?

James Maddison's season in numbers

Signed for a fee of £40m during the Australian manager's first summer in the dug-out, James Maddison has had a topsy-turvy Spurs career.

The attacking midfielder started last season on fire, scoring three times and supplying five assists in his opening 11 matches. Injury struck, however, and since then he hasn't been the same player, missing out on a place in the squad for Euro 2024, a decision that understandably left him gutted.

Returning at the start of 2024, Maddison endured a run of 17 matches where he scored only once. At the start of the new campaign, he's looked more like his older self. Maddison has failed to score again but he's picked up assists versus both Leicester City and Everton.

You sense that once this Spurs team begins to fire, those numbers will only improve. Indeed, the thought of the England international featuring in a three-prong attack alongside Heung-min Son and the aforementioned Solanke is an exciting one.

Although he's endured a tricky year, this is still one of the division's premier creators we're talking about here. Last term, the "incredible" midfielder, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, ranked inside the top 8% of positionally similar players in the Premier League for assists per 90 and among the best 3% for key passes, as per FBRef.

Ange Postecoglou and James Maddison celebrate

So, if Postecoglou can find a way to unlock more from the 27-year-old, he will no doubt prove key in their battle to secure a top-four place. Now valued at £65m, £5m more than Isak, it says it all about how much people rate him within the game. He is up there with the very best English football has to offer. A place in Lee Carsley's Three Lions set-up surely won't be far away.

Ipswich Town pushing to complete signing of "excellent" 24 y/o title winner

Ipswich Town have made contact over the signing of an "excellent" new target in the summer transfer window, according to a new update from Italy.

Ipswich transfer news

Kieran McKenna's side are close to opening their Premier League account, following two stunning back-to-back promotions from League One and the Championship, with a mouthwatering home clash with Liverpool arriving on August 17th.

Summer signings were always essential, in order for Ipswich to have enough quality to compete in the top flight, and some eye-catching business has been completed. Omari Hutchinson, Jacob Greaves and Liam Delap have all arrived for relatively large fees, coming in from Chelsea, Hull City and Manchester City, respectively, but further signings would be ideal before the window slams shut.

Jacob Greaves in action for Hull City in the Championship.

Sunderland ace Jack Clarke has emerged as an option, having excelled for the Black Cats in recent years, while another Championship star, Sammie Szmodics, has also been linked with a summer move to Portman Road, having outscored everyone in the division for Blackburn Rovers last season.

Another attacking player, Wilson Odobert, is another reported target for Ipswich, as they look to prise him away from Burnley, promising him Premier League football instead of him being back in the Championship with the Clarets. The 19-year-old is a player with so much potential, scoring three goals and registering two assists in the top flight in 2023/24.

Ipswich make contact for "excellent" player

According to Corriere dello Sport [via Sport Witness], Ipswich have made contact over the signing of Napoli midfielder Jean Cajuste this summer. The report does not specify whether contact has been made with the player, the Serie A club or both parties.

The 24-year-old is believed to be "on his way out" of Napoli before the end of this month, with Brentford also battling the Tractor Boys for his services. Leicester City are mentioned, too, while Galatasaray have seen their advances turned down in the past.

Cajuste could feel like a signing of real intent by Ipswich, considering the size of the club he is playing for currently, making 35 appearances for the Serie A giants. He is also a 23-time capped Sweden international, showing that he can play at an extremely high level for an extended period of time now.

The Napoli ace is a former league champion, earning title glory with FC Midtjylland in the Danish Superliga back in the 2019/20 season, and football talent scout Jacek Kulig has hailed him in the past, saying: "21 years of age. Excellent performance in an extremely important game for Midtjylland. The future of Swedish football."

Imagine him & Szmodics: Ipswich in the running to sign Odobert upgrade

Ipswich Town would terrify Premier League defences if this signing gets over the line.

ByKelan Sarson Aug 5, 2024

That is a big endorsement, and shows how highly-rated Cajuste has been for a number of years now, and he has the ability to make a big difference for Ipswich in the middle of the park from the off, providing McKenna with much-needed quality, experience and depth.
