Better than Minteh: Newcastle could end RW search with "Saka regen"

All summer long, Newcastle United have been on the hunt for a new right-sided attacker to try and bolster Eddie Howe’s attacking ranks.

However, after multiple failed attempts, with just ten days remaining in the transfer window, there’s not long left for the hierarchy and recruitment team to pick out a talent that would improve the options available to the Magpies boss.

Jacob Murphy started the season opener against Southampton in the Premier League last weekend, before being replaced by full-back Emil Krafth after Fabian Schar’s red card, with Miguel Almiron an unused substitute during the victory.

After such heavy investment, it’s evident that more needs to be spent to give Howe that option that he’s been craving all summer, but no deal seems close for any of the targets, which include Anthony Elanga and Noni Madueke.

As a result, the club could turn their attention to one player who has previously caught the eye in recent months.

Newcastle should make move for £35m talent

In the club’s hunt for a new right-sided attacker, it’s pivotal that they don’t make an erratic signing for the sake of an extra body, with any addition needing to be an upgrade on the players currently in that area.

PSV Eindhoven forwardJohan Bakayoko.

One player they could reignite interest is PSV’s Belgian winger Johan Bakayoko, after previously registering interest in a move for the 21-year-old earlier in the summer.

However, they wouldn’t be alone in their hunt for the youngster, with Liverpool also touted as a potential destination for the talent who has already registered two goals in the Eredivisie this season.

Any deal for Bakayoko would cost an interested party around the £35m mark, a reasonable price given his impressive goal return so far in 2024/25.

He would prove to be an upgrade on the current crop of players at Howe’s disposal, whilst also a better option than one sensation who recently departed Tyneside.

Why Bakayoko would be an upgrade on Minteh

A lot of disappointment was expressed at the end of June when Newcastle offloaded young winger Yankuba Minteh in a £33m deal to help boost their PSR standing.

The Gambian winger produced a sensational campaign on loan at Dutch outfit Feyenoord, registering 15 goal contributions in just 27 appearances – helping Arne Slot’s side claim a Champions League spot.

Whilst the deal saw the Magpies make a £26m profit on the £8m fee they paid for him the summer prior, there were real expectations that he could’ve been the answer to the club’s right-wing issues – but ultimately they couldn’t risk a point deduction during the current campaign.

However, a potential move for Bakayoko would see Howe’s secure themselves a higher-quality talent, with the youngster dubbed as a “[Bukayo] Saka regen” by analyst Ben Mattinson, with the talent possessing a very similar trait of cutting inside onto his wand of a left foot.

When comparing both his and Minteh's respective stats from the Eredivisie last season, the Belgian came out on top in various key areas for an attacker, potentially adding much-needed quality to Newcastle’s front line.

Bakayoko registered more combined goals and assists than Minteh last season – with 21 in total in the league – demonstrating the added goalscoring threat that he possesses in attacking areas.

£35m for a player of his quality in today’s market could potentially be excellent business by the club, with his value set to soar with regular minutes in one of Europe’s leading divisions. That likeness to Saka is also another tick in the box, with the Englishman chalking up 34 goals and assists for Arsenal last season.

Newcastle could move for an exciting wide man…

ByBrett Worthington Aug 13, 2024

Terms agreed: Newcastle line up Almiron heir who has shades of Ben Arfa

Just a handful of years ago, Miguel Almiron was arguably one of the most important players for Newcastle United during the first few months of the Saudi PIF revolution.

He enjoyed his best campaign for the Magpies in 2022/23, scoring 11 goals in 41 games in all competitions, helping Eddie Howe’s side secure a place in the Champions League.

However, last season was a dismal one for the Paraguayan, scoring just three Premier League goals – looking a shadow of his former self and potentially past his best.

elliot-anderson-miguel-almiron-newcastle-opinion

He was linked with a move to Saudi Arabia back in January, but no move ever materialised, with the 30-year-old still on the books at St James’ Park.

That could be about to change, with Football Insider claiming that the winger is in advanced talks with an unnamed Saudi Arabian side to end his near five-year stint on Tyneside.

However, Howe and the hierarchy have already identified a replacement for the former Atlanta United man, with a move progressing nicely ahead of the start of the 2024/25 Premier League campaign in less than three weeks' time.

Newcastle agree terms to sign huge attacking talent

According to Football Insider, Newcastle have already agreed personal terms to sign Chelsea winger Noni Madueke.

It’s not the first time the winger’s name has been linked with a move to the Magpies, with the Englishman on Howe’s attacking shortlist for the ongoing transfer window.

However, it appears as though the boss may be edging ever closer to securing a deal to sign one of his main targets, but it’s unknown how much a deal would set the club back.

The report also states that Newcastle see Madueke as a ‘significant improvement’ on the current options in the right-wing position, with the youngster’s tally of five goals slightly better than Almiron's despite featuring in seven games fewer last season.

Madueke would undoubtedly be an excellent addition for the Magpies, potentially following in the footsteps of one talent who was adored by the fanbase during his time on Tyneside.

Why Madueke has shades of Ben Arfa in his play style

French winger Hatem Ben Arfa arrived at St James’ Park as an unknown quantity, but after his time at the club, he left as a modern-day icon.

Hatem Ben Arfa

The left-footed forward made 86 appearances for the Magpies during his four-year spell at the club, with his ability to create chaos in the final third getting fans off their seats on a regular basis.

His sensational solo goal against Bolton Wanderers was undoubtedly the highlight of his time at Newcastle, but he also made a name for himself with his ability to cut inside off the right, with his tricky and unpredictable nature catching the eye.

Fast forward ten years from his departure, the club have been presented with an opportunity to sign Madueke – a talent who is very similar to Ben Arfa – featuring in the same position and liking to impress with their trickery as they chop onto their favoured left foot.

Despite being an impact player for the Blues since his move to Stamford Bridge, he’s produced some phenomenal stats – all of which would be a huge benefit to Howe’s side this season.

The “incredible” ace, as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig, produced 4.4 progressive passes and 6.5 progressive carries per 90 – with the latter ranking him within the top 2% of all forwards in Europe for 2023/24.

Madueke – who has the "capability to trick his opponent" according to former PSV midfielder Tommie van de Leegte – also managed 3.2 successful take-ons per 90, a tally that Ben Arfa would be proud of, showcasing the Englishman’s ability to drive past defenders and cut onto his favoured foot.

Chelsea winger Noni Madueke

With the deal edging ever closer, it appears as though Howe could get one of his transfer targets, in a move that will certainly improve the attackers at his disposal.

It’s clear he possesses huge quality, with his ability to create endless opportunities certainly boosting the Magpies’ chances of securing a place in the Champions League once again next season.

RCB bring in Finn Allen as Josh Philippe's replacement

The Royal Challengers Bangalore have signed uncapped New Zealand wicketkeeper-batsman Finn Allen as a like-for-like replacement for Josh Philippe who will miss the entire IPL 2021 for personal reasons.Allen, who had initially found no takers in the auction last month, had listed his base price at INR 20 lakh – identical to that of Philippe who was snapped up by the Royal Challengers at the IPL 2020 auction. Like Philippe, Allen can open the batting and keep wickets if needed.”The RCB management is disappointed to lose a player of Josh’s calibre for this IPL season, but at the same time we fully understand, respect and support his decision of excluding himself from the tournament,” the franchise said in a statement. “We had to select the next best option from the list of players registered for the IPL auction, at the same base price as Josh (20 lakh). We spent a great amount of time working through that potential list and have selected Finn Allen as a top-order batting replacement.”Allen, the 21-year-old Auckland batsman who had moved to Wellington ahead of this domestic season, had a bumper Super Smash 2020-21, his chart-topping 512 runs at a strike rate of almost 194 powering the Firebirds to the title. All up, Allen clattered 25 sixes in the tournament – the most by any player – and pulled off a variety of trick shots, including an outrageous switch-hit off New Zealand and Northern Knights’ premier spinner Mitchell Santner.Related

A day out of the Super Smash final, Allen had no expectations of an IPL call-up although he conceded that featuring in the league would be a bit of a dream come true.”For me, there are no expectations,” Allen had told ESPNcricinfo. “It has kind of always been that way for me – I’m just going out there and enjoying what I am doing. Just trying to win the title for Wellington, and if more than that comes out of it, it would be awesome. Obviously going to the IPL would be pretty amazing – that’s almost my dream for a long time now, so yeah hopefully get lucky and get picked up. But, obviously no expectations, and if it doesn’t happen, there’s always the future.”A day after lifting the Super Smash trophy, Allen made it to the New Zealand T20I squad although only as cover for senior opener Martin Guptill. After Guptill cleared his fitness test, Allen linked up with Wellington again and continued his stellar form with a maiden List A hundred. During his knock of 128 off 59 balls, he drew level with Peter Fulton for the fastest hundred (50 balls) by a New Zealander in the format as Wellington posted 427 for 8 – another New Zealand List A record.

RCB director of cricket Mike Hesson, who had closely followed the New Zealand domestic season, was impressed with Allen’s ball-striking in the Super Smash.”From a New Zealand point of view, once again I’m not so sure about Colin Munro right now,” Hesson had told Ian Smith on in February. “I think he has played a lot of cricket and once again you what he can do. You can bring him in if you need to. Finn Allen is the exciting one, isn’t he? It’s a matter of whether you can fit him in there…often players need to have a breakout season like that just to get their first opportunity before you find out that they’re actually really good.”And New Zealand has done that with (Devon) Conway – obviously he’s been knocking on the door for a long time – and Will Young is another fine player who has had to bide his time. But, if we think back to when Martin Guptill made his debut – he was young and on the back of some really, really good domestic performances to the point where he needed that opportunity. And Finn Allen, for me, there’s no better time to do it. He’s been exceptional at the top of the order and once it’s about who you going to leave out.”At RCB, Allen will now unite with Hesson and Kyle Jamieson, who was signed for INR 15 crore at the auction.Allen’s maiden IPL deal means he could potentially be unavailable for New Zealand’s three-match T20I series at home against Bangladesh, starting on March 28. IPL 2021 is due to begin on April 9, with RCB scheduled to play their league fixtures in Chennai, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Kolkata. The franchise’s pre-season camp is already underway at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

Despite suffering relegation to the third tier of English football last season, the higher ups at St Andrew's have still looked to back new manager Chris Davies with a slew of fresh faces. Across their numerous acquisitions during the summer window, the Blues have not been afraid to spend big with their total spending totaling up to over £12million.

Loan transfer

Despite already getting a number of talents through the door at St Andrew's the Blues are hungry for more signings as they look to make certain their return to the Championship next season. Names such as Stoke City's Josh Laurent have done the rounds in the West Midlands in recent weeks, however it appears that Birmingham's number one target is Jay Stansfield.

The young striker spent last season on loan with the Blues and managed to find the back of the net on 13 occasions. Despite Stansfield now boasting multiple admirers in the second tier, Birmingham remain hopeful that they can use their existing relationship with the player to get the deal over the line.

With the Blues' transfer activity showing little signs of slowing down, it appears that the club are ready to compete with a top Championship side to sign a highly-rated talent.

Blues ready to battle Leeds for new winger

As reported by Sport Witness, the Dutch press are claiming that Birmingham City are showing "great interest" in NEC Nijmegen forward Sontje Hansen. The outlet states that the Blues are rivalling Leeds United in the race to sign the 22-year-old with the Whites on the lookout for a replacement for Crysencio Summerville.

Hansen's stats for last season saw the winger contribute 6 goals and 7 assists in 38 appearances for NEC in all competitions. The winger also earned his first caps for the Netherlands' Under 23s side, scoring once in three appearances for his nation.

The 22-year-old arrived at his current side in a free transfer from Dutch giants Ajax last year. With three years remaining on his current deal at NEC, Sport Witness claim that the Eredivise side will ask for a high fee to part ways with Hansen this summer.

In spite of the transfer fee that he may command, Hansen is currently receiving a weekly wage of just under £6,000-per-week that the Blues should have no issue matching. With Birmingham already doing a fair bit of their business in the Dutch market, there is a decent chance that they could get this latest deal over the line.

Man City want another Everton youngster alongside Branthwaite in £10m move

Manchester City are showing concrete interest in another Everton player alongside their links to Jarrad Branthwaite this summer, according to a new transfer update.

Man City eyeing Branthwaite move

Pep Guardiola's side made history on Sunday afternoon, becoming the first team in English football history to win four Premier League titles in a row. City are not an outfit who rest on their laurels, however, and they will already be looking at potential signings for next season, strengthening their squad even further. Centre-back could be an area of the pitch where they target new faces, and Branthwaite has emerged as a reported target.

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite

Guardiola's men are reportedly looking to snap up the young Englishman from under the noses of rivals Manchester United, in a deal that would feel particularly sweet if they managed to beat them to his signature.

Branthwaite has enjoyed a superb season for Everton, standing out as one of their star performers, helping them avoid relegation to the Championship despite points deductions at Goodison Park. The 21-year-old ended up starting 35 of the Blues' 38 Premier League matches, forging a strong partnership with James Tarkowksi and averaging 2.7 aerial duel wins per game.

The Everton ace is far from City's only summer target, however, and it now looks as though another Toffees player is also on their radar.

Man City want Everton goalkeeper

According to a new update from Football Insider, Manchester City are showing genuine interest in Everton goalkeeper Douglas Lukjanciks this summer. No bid has been tabled yet, but a £10m move has been mooted, highlighting his potential with so little experience, and the Merseysiders feel he "has the potential to be a future number one and a successor" to Jordan Pickford.

The 16-year-old prospect is also wanted by Chelsea, so it is clear those within the game believe he has a seriously bright future.

Lukjanciks of course wouldn't be coming in as an immedate first-team player for City next season, but he could be such an astute signing, in terms of both the long-term future and ensuring that there is a nucleus of English talent in the squad moving forward.

The goalkeeper isn't able to sign his first professional contract until he turns 17 later this year, which could allow the Cityzens the opportunity to snap him up more easily. The lure of moving to such a dominant club with so much talent in their youth ranks could be too great to turn down, too.

The teenager has won two caps apiece for England's Under-16s and Under-17s, as well as making six appearances in the Under-18s Premier League, despite still only being 16 years of age.

Ornstein: Man City battling rivals to sign “unbelievable” £60k-a-week ace

His current club are desperate to keep him, though.

ByHenry Jackson May 18, 2024

Eventually, the influential Ederson will need to be replaced – Stefan Ortega is also 31 now – and if Lukjanciks came in and impressed at youth team level for a number of years, he could then make the step up to the senior setup over time.

Newcastle hit the jackpot selling "unbelievable" talent for 1264% profit

Newcastle United's dealings in the transfer market under Mike Ashley were questionable, to say the least, with the club either not spending any money at all or wasting it on players who weren't up to the level required.

The Magpies spent nearly £100m during the 2015/16 season, in an attempt to be competitive in the Premier League, with Ashley finally showing signings of splashing the cash.

Players such as Georginio Wijnaldum and Jonjo Shelvey proved to be quality additions, but they were a rarity with the vast majority of additions failing to provide any sort of value for their hefty fees.

Georginio Wijnaldum

Florian Thauvin and Henri Saivet both arrived on Tyneside during the same summer, but only managed a combined 24 appearances during their respective spells at St James' Park.

The club's erratic spending saw the Magpies needing to offload players the following summer to balance the books, with one player departing Newcastle for a huge fee – in a deal that proved to be excellent business by owner Ashley.

Moussa Sissoko's stats at Newcastle United

During the January transfer window of 2013, Newcastle signed midfielder Moussa Sissoko from French side Toulouse for a fee in the region of just £2.2m.

He would make an immediate impact on Tyneside, scoring three times in his first 13 Premier League appearances during the second half of the 2012/13 season.

Sissoko would be a key player in Newcastle's midfield over the next couple of seasons, featuring 69 times in the league over the next two seasons, scoring seven times as he helped maintain the club's Premier League status.

However, his consistent performances during the 2015/16 season would catch the eye of multiple other Premier League sides, with the Frenchman in line for a big-money move.

He also featured for his nation at Euro 2016, with his call-up for the host nation only further driving his price tag up ahead of the transfer window.

Tottenham Hotspur and Everton battled out for his signature, with the London club winning the race, paying £30m to take Sissoko to White Hart Lane.

The midfielder's move saw the club make a 1264% profit on the initial £2.2m they spent to sign him in 2013 – a brilliant deal for all parties.

Moussa Sissoko's market value in 2024

Eight years on from his departure from St James' Park, the "unbelievable" midfielder, as described by journalist Ricky Sacks, is still playing, featuring 24 times for FC Nantes in Ligue 1 during the 2023/24 season.

However, the 34-year-old's market value has rapidly decreased, with the Frenchman only valued at £1m, as per Transfermarkt.

Former Tottenham player Moussa Sissoko.

His subsequent value is now lower than current Newcastle full-back Matt Targett, who is still valued at £8.6m, despite not featuring for Eddie Howe since the start of October.

Although Sissoko was a hit at St James', he's failed to replicate his form elsewhere, only managing to find the net on two occasions during his latest stint in his homeland.

His £30m deal certainly helped the club during their tough years off the pitch, with the club able to receive the highest fee possible whilst his value was at its peak before rapidly declining since his transfer in 2016.

Bayern eye third Spurs star after Kane and Dier as Ange seeks replacement

Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou is personally looking at bringing in a replacement for a "relentless" Spurs player, as Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich eye a move for their potential third player after Harry Kane and Eric Dier.

Spurs ready to back Postecoglou rebuild after positive season

Even though Spurs missed out on fourth and Champions League qualification to Aston Villa, the 2023/2024 season still represented a campaign of real positives under Postecoglou.

Tottenham chiefs think they've sealed "huge coup" with prodigy set to sign

Their recruitment employees believe he’s an excellent capture.

The Lilywhites significantly improved on their 2022/23 finish under Antonio Conte and a succession of interim bosses after the Italian, with Postecoglou implementing an exciting brand of high-pressing football and making himself a popular figure at N17.

Postecoglou, though, has been frank in admitting that this Tottenham squad needs to undergo "drastic" change this summer – and suggests a few players could be set to depart as they're not part of the rebuild.

"We need change. Change has to happen," said Postecoglou on the summer transfer window.

"You can’t want to alter your course and expect the same people are going to be on that. It’s just not going to happen. We’ve had two windows and we’ve had some development of players, for sure, but when I say we’ve still got a long way to go, that’s what I’m talking about. It’s impossible to say you’re going to have drastic change and yet expect everyone to be on that journey.

"It’s not for the want of trying. It’s just that we’re going to play a certain way, we’re going to train a certain way, and we’re going to have a certain mindset. And that’s not for everyone."

Tottenham are ready to back Postecoglou in the summer transfer market, as the Australian prepares to implement this serious change. The club, led by chairman Daniel Levy, will look to make three key signings at least in the form of a new striker, centre-back and midfielder (Tom Allnutt).

However, there could even be more of an overhaul, as other reports suggest Postecoglou wants more full-back depth behind Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie. Right-back Emerson Royal has also been linked with a summer exit to facilitate this, with GiveMeSport sharing an update on the Brazilian's future this week.

Ange seeking Emerson Royal replacement as Bayern Munich eye move

According to GMS, Postecoglou is personally on the lookout for Royal replacement at Spurs, with a host of big-name clubs taking interest in the 25-year-old.

One of them, interestingly, is Bayern Munich – coming after their previous Tottenham deals for both Dier and Kane over the last 12 months. As well as Bayern, Juventus and AC Milan are said to be interested in Royal, which is a big compliment to the defender who could well be on the move.

Three years after he joined from Barcelona, the South American has racked up over a century of appearances for the north Londoners in all competitions, with pundit Kevin Campbell calling him "relentless".
