Rangers and Clement could now allow "warrior" to leave in January

Rangers could allow one of their first-team players to leave Ibrox this January amid interest from Europe, according to a report.

Change needed at Rangers

The Gers’ dismal 2-1 defeat at St Mirren on Boxing Day underlined the need for changes in the January transfer window, with a seemingly insurmountable 12-point gap now being opened up by Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.

There could be a number of departures this winter, with striker Cyriel Dessers potentially on his way to France amid interest from Saint-Etienne, while fellow forward Hamza Igamane is attracting interest from English Premier League outfit Everton.

Rabbi Matondo may be deemed surplus to requirements by Philippe Clement, while long-serving right-back James Tavernier could also move elsewhere, having previously attracted interest from Turkish sides Besiktas and Trabzonspor.

However, Tavernier is not the only Gers player who could be on his way to Turkey, with journalist Ersan Serdal confirming that Trabzonspor are interested in signing Ridvan Yilmaz.

Manager Şenol Güneş is personally interested in signing Yilmaz, and there are indications that Clement could be willing to sanction his departure this January.

The Herald has provided a further update on the defender’s future, stating that Rangers would consider accepting an offer this winter should a reasonable bid be tabled.

Given that the Turkey international has fallen down the pecking order since returning from injury in November and with Jefte now more regularly being given the nod at left-back, Clement may be happy to let him go.

The Light Blues are said to be trying to reduce their wage bill in line with their recent change in recruitment strategy.

Rangers can finally send Dessers packing with move for "impressive" forward

Rangers could bolster their sqaud next month

ByRoss Kilvington Dec 27, 2024 Good move for all parties

23-year-old Yilmaz has endured a tough time with injuries since arriving at Ibrox, which has meant he’s never really been able to cement his place in the starting XI.

It is clear that he is still held in high regard by the Rangers manager, with Clement praising his resilience earlier in December, saying: “I know what kind of warrior Ridvan is, from last season.

“He was [a] long time out with an injury, he is coming back now and I knew he could play that position also because he always gives everything for the team.

“And he has quality on the ball to do the right thing and he is a smart guy.”

That said, the Turk has fallen out of favour at Ibrox, with Jefte now the preferred option, so a move back to his home country could make sense for all parties.

It would make sense for Yilmaz to attempt to reignite his career with Trabzonspor, while Rangers could use the money to strengthen other areas of the squad that are lacking in quality.

Mourinho loan flop is now outscoring Solanke after leaving Spurs

The sky is blue, the grass is green, and Tottenham Hotspur have been an incredibly entertaining yet inconsistent team again this year.

Ange Postecoglou’s side have put in some of the most impressive performances of the season so far, like their 3-0 win away to Manchester United and their 4-1 dismantling of Aston Villa just over a week ago.

Yet, as they did last season, the North Londoners have also found ways to lose to substantially weaker teams like Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town while also completely capitulating against Brighton & Hove Albion.

That said, for all the issues in and around Postecoglou’s team at the moment, there are plenty of positives, including the form of summer signing Dominic Solanke, although he is being outscored by a former loan flop.

Dominic Solanke's form this season

Yes, following his £65m move from Bournemouth in the summer, there was a lot of expectation and pressure placed upon Solanke’s shoulders heading into this season.

The Spurs faithful were hoping that he’d be able to replicate the sensational form he showed for the Cherries last year, which saw him score 21 goals and provide four assists.

Unfortunately, an ankle injury just one game into the league campaign meant that supporters had to wait a little while longer to see their record-signing in full flow, but as the old saying goes, good things come to those who wait, and after a couple of underwhelming performances against Arsenal and Coventry City he was ready to show the fans what he could do.

The Basingstoke-born poacher got off the mark in the league against Brentford in mid-September, and in the next six league games, he scored another three goals and provided an assist while also scoring another goal in the Europa League last week to go with the one he scored against Qarabağ FK in September.

Overall, the former Liverpool ace has racked up a reasonably impressive haul of six goals and two assists in 15 appearances for Postecoglou’s side, equating to an average of a goal involvement every 1.87 games.

However, while that’s a great start, the 27-year-old is being outscored by a former Spurs flop signed on loan by José Mourinho.

Spurs' loan flop outscoring Solanke

Let’s get straight to the point: the player in question is midfielder Gedson Fernandes, who joined Mourinho’s Spurs outfit on an initial 18-month loan deal from Benfica in January 2020.

There was an element of excitement around the move, as, despite being just 21 years old at the time, he had already made 59 senior appearances for the Portuguese giants and was part of the team that won the league the season prior.

Unfortunately, Spurs fans never even got much of a chance to form their own opinion of the player, as over the following year, he played just 447 minutes of action across 14 appearances, ten of which were off the bench, before he was sent back to Lisbon with it clear that he was not going to get any real game time under the special one.

The following few years saw him spend time on loan with Galatasaray and Caykur Rizespor in Turkey before securing a permanent move to Turkish giants Besiktas in the summer of 2022, where he remains.

Last season saw him play a key role in the side, making 45 appearances across all competitions, scoring three goals and providing six assists, but he’s done even better this year.

In just 18 appearances for the Kara Kartallar, the São Tomé-born dynamo has scored seven goals and provided two assists. Therefore, he is currently outscoring Solanke despite playing in central midfield.

Ultimately, Spurs were right to send him back when they did, as he clearly wasn’t of the level required to play in the Premier League, but it’s undoubtedly a happy ending to see the 25-year-old find his feet at such a big club.

Move over Jones: Slot can unleash his own Xabi Alonso in Liverpool starlet

It’s been almost three months since Liverpool’s 2024/25 campaign began, and Arne Slot’s side perch atop the summit of both the Premier League and the Champions League, having qualified for the Carabao Cup quarter-finals too.

What a start. When Jurgen Klopp stood down from his lionised manager’s position at the end of last season, no one envisaged this. But it has happened, and with Arsenal and Manchester City both currently out of sorts, the Reds faithful will be cautiously hopeful that big things might be achieved.

It could have been different, so very different. As soon as Klopp spoke into the camera and shattered a city’s red heart, rumours started bobbing up regarding Xabi Alonso, who appeared to be the perfect successor.

He’d been working wonders with Bayer Leverkusen, but rejected Liverpool’s probes and confirmed that he would remain in Germany for the foreseeable. A prudent move from a 42-year-old coach who knows an elite managerial career lies ahead, one that may, one day, find him in the Anfield dugout – on the righthand side, at least.

Indeed, Alonso made his return to Merseyside this week and saw his team, so indomitable last year, utterly wrecked by Slot’s machine. At the core of the home side’s success was Curtis Jones, who looked to be cut from the same cloth as the legendary Spaniard at times, his passing was so slick and stylish.

Curtis Jones' "Alonso-esque" display

Jones, 23, has ebbed and flowed throughout his Liverpool career, often demonstrating great promise but also being plugged back by injuries and infrequent starting berths that come as a by-product of such setbacks.

Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones

But he has started to find his feet under Slot’s management, having waxed lyrical about the Dutch coach’s tactical philosophy during pre-season, explaining to reporters that the more control-oriented brand suits his own passing game perfectly:

It’s understandable. As per FBref, Jones ranks among the top 6% of midfielders across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for pass completion, the top 10% for assists, the top 17% for progressive carries and the top 8% for successful take-ons per 90.

Technical and driven, he’s almost tailor-made for Slot’s style of football and it’s no wonder he’s starting to look like a fundamental piece of a thriving system, showcasing his quality against Alonso’s side in midweek.

That through ball was a thing to be witnessed. So simple, yet so perfect, weighted with an artist’s flourish. The Athletic’s James Pearce had even praised the “Alonso-esque” through ball, with the opposition manager’s identity certainly not lost on the correspondent.

Jones’ particular approach to the midfield craft is something that Slot is utilising well, but he’s not actually Liverpool’s own version of Alonso.

Instead, the club have a more fitting successor in Stefan Bajcetic, who is currently out on loan with RB Salzburg in Austria.

Stefan Bajcetic could be Slot's version of Xabi Alonso

In the 2022/23 season, Bajcetic made 19 appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side, emerging from the youth fold to save a squad in crisis, scoring once – against Aston Villa in the Premier League – and announcing to the Reds supporters that they had a new prodigy to rally behind.

Liverpool midfielder Stefan Bajcetic.

Bajcetic was signed from Celta Vigo for just £224k in December 2020 and is touted for a star role in Liverpool’s engine room. Now 19, his fast-paced development was halted last term as he battled against injuries and growth-related issues that restricted him to a mere handful of displays.

Hailed for his “special” skill set by journalist Zubin Daver, the Spaniard is making headway under Pep Lijnders in Austria even if Salzburg as a whole are flattering to deceive, with five Bundesliga starts to his name and metrics that highlight his roundedness.

Indeed, as per Sofascore, Bajcetic has averaged 2.2 tackles, 1.5 dribbles and six successful duels per top-flight game this term, winning a whopping 62% of the lattermost metric – placing him in the same ballpark as the thriving Ryan Gravenberch (64% success rate in the Premier League).

He’s making the requisite improvements, shaping into a midfield force. Alonso, elegant and all-seeing in the middle of the park, was indeed an elite long-range passer but he was also a tenacious and confident protector of his backline. However, not the most imposing of athletes, this was down to his intelligence and knowledge of his craft. Is it really surprising he’s turning into one of the finest coaches in the business?

Perhaps not. Bajcetic, too, is not a hulking, heavyset force of a titan, though a spurt across the past year has seen him stretch to a height of 6 foot 2. Even so, his range of defensive qualities comes from a cerebral understanding of football that belies his youthful years and inexperience.

The Spanish midfielder plays with an almost unflappable mindset, reflected in his playing style. He’s not got the same surgical distribution that was innately formed in Alonso’s itinerary, but that’s not to say Bajcetic isn’t capable of splitting defences with well-worked balls.

Liverpool midfielder Stefan Bajcetic.

Bajcetic will continue to hone his craft over in Salzburg, but keep an eye on him, for he might just return to Merseyside with a hunger for stardom under Slot’s wing, and he might just challenge the likes of Jones for a starring spot in a competitive outfit.

Move over Wallace: Corberan must now unleash “talented” West Brom star

West Bromwich Albion go into this set of Championship mid-week fixtures desperate for a win, with the Baggies experiencing a sticky patch of form of late in the second tier.

Carlos Corberan’s men went the entirety of October without picking up an elusive three points, but the very start of November did see West Brom race into a 1-0 lead away from home at Luton Town, only for Tahith Chong to fire home an equaliser to secure a share of the points for the Hatters.

Therefore, the Spaniard in the Hawthorns hot seat must be contemplating some changes for his side’s clash with Burnley tonight, which could include dropping Jed Wallace for some new blood to shine against Scott Parker’s equally up-and-down Clarets.

Wallace's form this season

Wallace has learnt the hard way that he’s no longer a guaranteed name on his manager’s teamsheet, with only two starts coming his way this campaign in the Championship to date, after starting 35 clashes in total last season.

His poor displays when he has started haven’t helped his cause either, with the experienced 30-year-old way off the pace against Luton last time out.

The former Millwall midfielder would only amass a lacklustre 22 touches of the ball at Kenilworth Road, with the bite and energy that’s usually apparent in the versatile West Brom number seven’s game also missing, with just one paltry duel won from nine attempted.

Also failing to complete a single dribble, alongside failing to test Thomas Kaminski with a single effort on goal, it wasn’t a huge surprise when Corberan hooked off Wallace just after the hour mark to put him out of his misery.

Unfortunately, the 30-year-old’s best days in a Baggies strip could now be behind him, with free-kick strikes like this one managed against Rotherham United just last season a distant memory, compared to his dire performances in the here and now.

Corberan could well be forced into playing a different attacking midfielder behind Josh Maja for the test of Burnley tonight, therefore, with John Swift an adequate replacement for the underperforming Wallace.

Why Swift should replace Wallace

Funnily enough, Swift was purchased in the exact same transfer window Wallace also entered the building, with the ex-Reading man still showing glimpses of his quality in a Baggies kit now three seasons deep into his stay at the Hawthorns.

Although he also has zero goals and assists next to his name like his former Millwall counterpart in league action, Swift was desperately unlucky versus Cardiff City the match before the away trip to Luton to not pick up a goal contribution.

Coming away from the game with four key passes under his belt, after amassing a ridiculous 116 touches as a key creative spark for his side, it’s safe to say the 29-year-old was desperately unlucky not to come away from the 0-0 affair with anything of note.

Instead, he was surprisingly dropped for Wallace, which is a decision his manager must now regret, having seen what the out-of-sorts midfielder offered in place of the “talented” ace, with that label given to him when he still was at Reading by ex-Royals manager Veljko Paunovic.

Also capable of scoring sublime strikes like this one for his side, having tallied up 16 goals from his 102 appearances to date in the West Midlands, Swift’s re-entry into the starting XI could see West Brom play more on the front foot against Burnley.

With the Clarets also wobbling in terms of form, with no wins in their last three, Corberan could sense this is a good opportunity for his team to get back on the horse, as Swift potentially returns to his XI.

Update on Anthony Gordon’s injury before Newcastle vs Chelsea in EFL Cup

Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon missed his side’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea on Sunday afternoon, but will he be fit for the midweek EFL Cup clash with the Blues?

Newcastle preparing for another Chelsea clash

Eddie Howe’s team were beaten at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League, with their in-form opponents always feeling like they would just have too much for them. Newcastle certainly didn’t disgrace themselves against Chelsea, equalising through Alexander Isak in the first half and threatening to make it 2-2 late on in the game, but they ultimately didn’t quite have enough quality to leave west London with a point to show for their efforts.

No sooner have the Magpies played the Blues than they meet again in midweek, with Howe’s men hosting Enzo Maresca’s side in the fourth round of the EFL Cup on Wednesday evening. Newcastle’s long wait for a trophy has been well-documented and victory at St James’ Park would put them into the quarter-finals.

The Premier League side have been having to get by without a number of key players recently, from Kieran Trippier to Gordon, and there has now been an update on the fitness of the latter, who has become such an influential performer out on the left wing.

Howe gives Gordon injury update for Newcastle

Speaking after the Chelsea game in the league, Howe confirmed that Newcastle star Gordon will undergo a scan on Monday, in order to find out the severity of his groin issue: “He felt his groin [on Saturday] in training. We hope it’s not serious but he’ll go for a scan probably tomorrow.”

This has to be considered a worry for the Magpies, with a scan potentially revealing damage to the England international, therefore ruling him out of action for some time. Even if nothing serious is found, it would still be a surprise if Gordon was back in the fold for the Chelsea cup game, but hopefully being available for Saturday’s visit of Arsenal in the league instead.

The 23-year-old’s influence was highlighted at Stamford Bridge, with Newcastle not carrying enough attacking threat without him, as both Harvey Barnes and Miguel Almiron struggled to have a positive impact and link with Isak.

Gordon is clearly admired and cherished by his Magpies teammates, too, with Bruno Guimaraes saying of him earlier this year: “He has been unbelievable, always scoring and giving some assists. He is a lovely guy as well, I am very happy for him and hope he can get some minutes for England. For me to play against him will be massive for both of us and the club as well.”

5/10 Newcastle star was just as bad as Dan Burn vs Chelsea

Newcastle United were beaten by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

ByJoe Nuttall Oct 27, 2024

Gordon is going to be such an important figure for Newcastle for years to come, having only recently signed a new long-term deal, and his return could coincide with the Magpies’ season turning around for the better, hopefully sooner rather than later.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman five-for, batters' onslaught help Afghanistan crush Scotland by 130 runs

Peter Borren: The bowling proved ‘far too much for Scotland’

Chasing down 191 was never going to be easy for Scotland but no one would have expected them to collapse in the manner they did. Mujeeb Ur Rahman rocked their chase with a three-wicket over, and went on to complete his maiden five-for in T20Is, finishing with figures of 4-0-20-5.The lower order then stood no chance against Rashid Khan, who picked up 4 for 9 in 2.2 overs as Scotland were bundled out for 60 in 10.2 overs. Earlier, after Mohammad Nabi had opted to bat, Hazratullah Zazai and Mohammad Shahzad provided Afghanistan with a blazing start, with the fifty coming up in just 5.1 overs. Najibullah Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz then added 87 in 8.4 overs for the third wicket to lift the side to a total that proved well out of Scotland’s reach.A power-packed powerplay
Coming into this match, Shahzad had scored 309 runs in six T20Is against Scotland at an average of 51.50 and a strike rate of 148.55. In four of those games, he was the Player of the Match.Shahzad was playing his first game for Afghanistan since June 2019, but it didn’t seem to matter as he started in his typical aggressive manner: smashing the first ball he faced, from offspinner Michael Leask, over long-off for a six.Two balls later, Zazai targeted the deep-midwicket region for his first six. That was the shorter side of the ground as well. But soon the dimensions stopped mattering. In the fifth over, Zazai took on the longer boundary and smashed Brad Wheal for a 101-metre six.Shahzad fell to Safyaan Sharif for a 15-ball 22 on the penultimate ball of the next over, but the onslaught from the openers meant Afghanistan ended the powerplay on 55 for 1, the joint-most by a team in this World Cup.Watt applies brakes before Zadran, Gurbaz re-accelerate
After the powerplay, Zazai hit only one boundary – a six off Chris Greaves – before Mark Watt bowled him with a 107kph yorker.Gurbaz, meanwhile, took seven balls to open his account. At one point, he was on 15 off 20 balls and it started looking like Scotland could pull things back.Mujeeb Ur Rahman registered his best figures in T20Is•ICC via Getty

That wasn’t to be the case though as Zadran kept founding boundaries at regular intervals. The hundred came up for Afghanistan in the 13th over. Soon Gurbaz too found his touch. After moving to 23 off 27, he helicoptered Josh Davey over deep-midwicket before launching Wheal for two more sixes in the 17th over.Watt, who had conceded only ten from his first three overs, bore the brunt too, with Zadran hitting him for a four and a six in a 13-run over. Gurbaz fell for 46 but Zadran didn’t miss out on the half-century, bringing up the milestone off 30 balls and helping his side to a daunting total.Mujeeb rocks Scotland’s chase
George Munsey started Scotland’s chase with a reverse-swept four followed by a reverse-swept six off Nabi in the first over. He tried the same shot against Mujeeb in the next over, but the bowler’s pace didn’t allow him to connect his attempts.Kyle Coetzer hit two fours off Naveen-ul-Haq to take the side to 27 for no loss after three overs. That was the last time anything went Scotland’s way as Mujeeb picked up three wickets – all off googlies – in one over.Coetzer was the first to go, bowled through the gate. Calum MacLeod lasted just one ball and was lbw. Richie Berrington survived the hat-trick ball but lasted only two more deliveries as Mujeeb snared him lbw on the last ball of the over.Mujeeb completes five-for, Rashid cleans up the tail
From the other end, Naveen had Matthew Cross caught behind, Shahzad diving full-stretch to his right to take the catch.Mujeeb then rattled Munsey’s stumps from around the wicket to leave Scotland 36 for 5, with Rashid still to come into the attack.Rashid struck with his third ball, this time Leask failing to read the googly and being lbw. In the next over, Mujeeb completed his five-for by bowling Watt with a carrom ball before Rashid polished off the tail.

Thomas Tuchel gets to work! Liam Delap, Phil Foden & eight key decisions the new England manager must make ahead of World Cup qualifiers

The Three Lions boss has been spotted at grounds across the Premier League as he gets his feet under the desk, but what are the big issues facing him?

Thomas Tuchel has officially begun work as England manager, and he has wasted no time in casting his eye over the options available to him. The German tactician was spotted at no fewer than four Premier League games across his first weekend in the job as as he starts to piece together plans for his first squad in March.

The new Three Lions boss has inherited something of a transitional group from the newly-knighted Gareth Southgate, who was in charge for eight successful years. Tuchel therefore faces some big decisions as he attempts to make his imprint and move in a new direction ahead of the 2026 World Cup in 18 months' time.

But as he gets his feet under the desk and makes his way to plenty of games, what are the key issues Tuchel must address before he names his first squad and picks his first XI for the clash with Albania on March 21?

  • Getty Images Sport

    The left-back problem

Arguably the biggest decision facing Tuchel is who will play on the left flank in his defence – a choice he needs to get right for both the short and long-term with England looking alarmingly short of fit or in-form options.

Previous first-choice Luke Shaw has endured another injury-plagued campaign to date with Manchester United, seeing just 98 minutes of action across only three appearances. After a 'small' setback in December, he still hasn't returned.

Meanwhile, Ben Chilwell – a stalwart of Tuchel's Champions League-winning Chelsea side – has somehow seen even less game time, playing just once despite being fit as Enzo Maresca prioritises other options at Stamford Bridge.

Shaw might be back soon, but options are still very thin on the ground nonetheless, with Newcastle's Lewis Hall, whom Tuchel knows from their time together at Stamford Bridge, having made his debut back in November having established himself as Eddie Howe's preferred starter for the Magpies.

It would be little surprise, either, if the coach was keeping tabs on Ipswich's Leif Davis in the run-up to his first squad announcement – a player who has so far gone under England's radar and is uncapped even at youth level. The 25-year-old – who can also play at wing-back – has been one of the Tractor Boys' standout performers, chipping in with four goal involvements in a newly-promoted side that has often toiled.

    Is Delap ready?

Could there be two Ipswich players in Tuchel's first England squad? Striker Liam Delap is currently commanding the German's consideration, although the new England manager is yet to watch him in person.

A centre-forward who combines brutish physicality with excellent touch, technique and finishing ability, the 21-year-old has already proven he is Premier League-ready with 10 goal involvements in 19 games and is currently the joint highest-scoring English striker in the division.

Delap is still raw, but with Harry Kane's current understudy Ollie Watkins looking somewhat out of sorts so far in 2024-25, he is surely on course to be given his chance if he can maintain this form over the next couple of months.

For a time it seemed there was no clear long-term successor to Kane, but with 18 months until the World Cup, this could be the perfect moment to integrate a potential heir.

    Tactics, tactics, tactics

While Tuchel became renowned for the effectiveness of his three-at-the-back formations during his time in English football with Chelsea, that is not necessarily his preferred tactical shape.

It is certainly a bonus that the many of the players in the Three Lions set-up are accustomed to playing with a back three under Southgate, but Tuchel has also frequently used a 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3 in recent years across his time with Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain and in west London – with the former his go-to at Bayern Munich.

Revered as a highly-adaptable master tactician, much will depend on which players he feels will fit which system. Given the attacking riches at his disposal, Tuchel may not want to sacrifice a potentially potent forward line by deploying a more pragmatic back three.

As we've mentioned, left-wing back will be a problem area, too, unless Shaw is fit, and Kieran Trippier – who was often used out of position on the left under the previous regime – has retired at international level. Harry Maguire's return to form is timely given he is adept in the heart of a back three, but the Three Lions also look short of options at right wing-back.

    Palmer or Foden?

Whatever formation the manager does eventually pip for, getting the attacking constellation right poses a significant challenge. Kane may be an unquestionable starter, but Tuchel's selections on the wings and in attacking midfield are certain to draw scrutiny.

Southgate drew widespread criticism in the final days of his tenure for standing staunchly by Phil Foden at Euro 2024 despite his obvious struggles, while in-form Cole Palmer was left to warm the bench throughout the tournament, making a mockery of that decision by assisting in the semi-final and scoring a brilliant equaliser against Spain in the Berlin showpiece.

Form dictates that this should be a far easier call for Tuchel, with Foden's malaise dragging into the club season, while Palmer shows no signs of slowing down with 19 goal involvements to his name in 20 Premier League games.

Much will depend on whether Tuchel wants to use Jude Bellingham as a No.10 or in a deeper playmaking role, but at present there is little doubt that Chelsea's talisman should be a guaranteed starter in this new-look England side. Foden has work to do before March rolls around.

Man Utd star who Carragher totally rinsed has now become undroppable

Since taking over at Manchester United in the summer of 2022, Erik ten Hag has put a heavy focus on signing players from his former club, Ajax.

Over each of the three summers he has been at the helm at Old Trafford, the Dutchman has brought in at least one player he used to manage at the Dutch giants.

In his first summer, he signed Lisandro Martinez and Antony, who cost an eye-watering £81.3m. In 2023, they brought in goalkeeper Andre Onana, before adding defensive pair Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich, who also played under the Dutchman at Ajax.

De Ligt scores against Southampton.

Have all of these moves gone according to plan? Well, Antony has been a notable dud and Martinez wasn’t received particularly well when he first stepped foot on English shores.

First impressions of Lisandro Martinez

It may seem odd that United’s manager has a strict transfer policy of signing his former players, although there is little argument against him on the face of things, given how successful his side was during his time in Amsterdam.

There was great speculation over a couple of the signings, including Antony, given his extortionate price. However, the player who arguably raised the most question marks was Argentine World Cup winner Martinez.

One of the issues many had about United’s number 6 was his height. Many were unsure if his slender 5 foot 9 frame would mean he’d struggle at centre-back in the Premier League. Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher raised this issue on Sky Sports, calling the 26-year-old a “problem” for Ten Hag.

In full, the outspoken pundit noted: ” I’m convinced this can’t work because of the size of him playing in a back four. Maybe he could go left back, maybe he could play in a back three, but in a back four, he cannot play there in the Premier League.”

Martinez’s stats for Man United

Despite the criticism the defender has faced, the Argentine has gone on to prove Carragher, and other doubters wrong by his performances in that famous red shirt over the past two seasons.

Despite injury issues that have seen him miss 56 games in his first two seasons at the club, Martinez has proven to be a key part of Ten Hag’s side.

He has now played 64 games for the Red Devils, scoring one goal against Arsenal in 2022/23, and has played an important part in United’s Carabao Cup and FA Cup triumphs.

Although he featured just twice in their FA Cup win last term, he was crucial in the final against Manchester City, in which the 13-time winners of the competition ran out 2-1 victors.

Lisandro Martinez

A large reason for this was the fact he played alongside Raphael Varane. The duo formed an iconic pair for the Red Devils, despite playing just 33 times with each other. They managed 21 wins as a partnership – the last one being the victory at Wembley – and just five defeats.

Although their time as a pairing was short, it was one that will no doubt live long in the memory of United fans. United captain Bruno Fernandes was certainly a fan of the duo, once explaining they “complement each other very good”.

Now with a new long-term partner in De Ligt, and his injury problems hopefully behind him, Martinez has made a good start to the 2024/25 campaign. According to Sofascore, the South American averages 2.3 interceptions per game, 3.8 ball recoveries and an impressive 94% pass accuracy.

Despite his injury troubles, Martinez has certainly gone a long way to proving Carragher, and his doubters wrong. The Liverpool legend thought he would be an issue for United in defence, but in fact, he has been the opposite; an undroppable player, an integral reason for winning silverware and a man quickly becoming a cult hero at Old Trafford.

Man Utd thought they had the next CR7, now he's worth even less than Antony

The talented international just could not make it work at United, and now he’s playing outside of Europe entirely.
