Wolves likely to bid for "monster" £30m Cunha replacement

Wolverhampton Wanderers are still sweating over Pedro Neto's future at the club but last summer's exodus has placed Molineux in a good position in regard to profit and sustainability.

This season, Gary O'Neil triumphed in instilling his philosophy in testing circumstances and tearing through the upper echelon of the Premier League to avoid relegation comfortably.

But much hinges on the owners and their investment plans this summer, with Neto and perhaps one or two others likely to sit at the heartland of transfer speculation. Moreover, compounding the problem, Old Gold supporters were left disconcerted by a steep hike in ticket pricing. A burst of positivity, it could be argued, is paramount.

Wolves boss Gary O'Neil

Luckily, O'Neil is committed to improving his first team this summer and is pushing Wolves to fight rivals for an exciting Premier League star.

Wolves eyeing Premier League star

According to reports relayed by Yorkshire Post, Wolves are one of four top-flight teams set to make bids for Arsenal's Eddie Nketiah, with Fulham – who would be willing to pay £30m for the centre-forward – Wolves and Crystal Palace also in the mix.

Arsenal are fighting to secure the signature of RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko in a £55m deal, which would surely see the Englishman's intermittent opportunities limited further.

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah

Mikel Arteta is a big fan of the 25-year-old but will reluctantly let him leave, and with O'Neil searching for firepower up front, this might just be the perfect move to make, though Wolves would need to match Fulham's prospective offer.

Eddie Nketiah's style of play

Once described as a "monster" by journalist Aaron Catterson-Reid, Nketiah has completed 168 appearances, scoring 38 goals, for Arsenal after graduating from the youth academy, enjoying a successful but fleeting loan spell with Leeds United and even earning his first international cap for England.

This season, however, despite netting a brilliant hat-trick against Sheffield United in October in the Premier League, the 5 foot 9 striker was restricted to just six substitute displays onward from February, clearly not included at the heart of Arteta's ambitious plans.

Nketiah had also netted in two of Arsenal's opening three top-flight fixtures but as Kai Havertz went from strength to strength so too did the Nketiah's match action suffer diminishment. With Sesko fiercely pursued and Gabriel Jesus vying for a place at No. 9, Wolves' target is clearly heading toward the exit in north London.

But Wolves want his signature for a reason. As per FBref, Nketiah ranks among the top 9% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for touches in the attacking penalty area per 90 and the top 12% for pass completion, highlighting his strength as a frontal focal point and his ball-playing skill.

The £100k-per-week star is blessed with natural athletic prowess and all the tools to succeed as the leading man at a Premier League team, and while Wolves have been widely reported to be closing in on a move for Southampton's Che Adams, who is out of contract at St. Mary's this month, signing a player of Nketiah's ilk would be a major win.

Nketiah could lead the line for years to come at Molineux, providing O'Neil with a reliable goal threat to avoid the dreaded drop zone and instead tear through the division and toward the upper end.

Why Wolves are interested in Eddie Nketiah

There's perhaps a tacit outward air at Molineux that suggests Neto is going to leave this summer. The Portugal winger still has three years on his current deal but £60m is no small sum and sharp strategic transfer moves could make such an influx of cash worthwhile.

But of course, Nketiah is not a winger, and thus would not be a direct replacement for Neto, should he leave. Instead, the Gunners ace could find himself taking Matheus Cunha's role in the Old Gold first team, with the Brazilian attracting attention after his resounding 2023/24 campaign.

As per The Mirror, Manchester United are hot on the £60m-rated Cunha's trail and are even prepared to double his £60k-per-week salary. It's early days but if Sir Jim Ratcliffe's nosing-around turns into concrete interest, it might be hard for Wolves to turn the lucrative suitor away.

And there is no point denying that it would feel like a detrimental blow. Cunha has been positively magnificent this season, raising his game considerably and now ranking among the top 10% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for pass completion, the top 12% for progressive passes, the top 5% for progressive carries, the top 3% for successful take-ons and the top 14% for tackles per 90.

He's been pretty good, and while there are myriad benefits to partnering Nketiah with the Brazilian, O'Neil's transfer target is technically proficient and is mutable in his playing style, capable of adopting a dynamic role that, yes, focusses on his goalscoring but also incorporates creativity and enhances team synergy.

Praised for his "incredible impact" and as a "beast" by his Arsenal manager, Nketiah is of course aware of his bit-part place in the Emirates machine, and given that he is now entering the prime of his career, surely he should prioritise playing time. His hat-trick this season emphasises the importance of finding a place to properly showcase his skills.

Wolves eye move for "exciting" Ait-Nouri replacement

Wolves may need to sign a replacement for Rayan Ait-Nouri this summer

ByRoss Kilvington Jun 3, 2024

At Wolves, he would not only find a platform to impress but a launchpad to rise to a position of prominence in the Premier League. If Cunha leaves, he will be a worthy successor.

Nottingham Forest could also lose £80k-a-week hero alongside Gibbs-White

Nottingham Forest are in danger of losing a "talented" player alongside the rumours surrounding Morgan Gibbs-White in the summer transfer window, with Premier League clubs eyeing moves for both young stars.

Gibbs-White transfer rumours

The Reds achieved what was asked of them in the end this season, staying in the Premier League, but that's not to say that there wasn't drama along the way. Nuno's side had to overcome points being taken off the board, but ended up doing just enough to remain in the top flight.

Attention now turns to new signings, although the future of Gibbs-White has arguably been one of the biggest talking points, as Forest look to try and keep hold of perhaps their most important and talented player.

The Englishman was superb throughout the 2023/24 campaign, registering 10 assists and scoring five goals in the league, but his form has led to various reports suggesting he could move elsewhere.

Newcastle United are one of the clubs linked with a move for Gibbs-White ahead of 2024/25, but Tottenham have also held talks with him, seeing the 24-year-old as an improvement on James Maddison, which says a lot about his ability.

Nottingham Forest could also lose "talented" winger

According to The Guardian, Nottingham Forest could lose Callum Hudson-Odoi this summer, too, with Spurs also interested in bringing him to north London. The report says that the winger "was offered to them last summer when he was surplus to requirements at Chelsea", only for the north Londoners to look at alternatives instead, coincidentally signing Brennan Johnson from Forest.

The update goes on to add that "Spurs’ opinion towards Hudson-Odoi has changed after a fine season at Forest" and he is now "on their wishlist for what is expected to be a busy summer".

Nottingham Forest player Callum Hudson-Odoi

Losing Hudson-Odoi on top of Gibbs-White would be a monumental blow for anyone of a Forest persuasion this summer, considering they are possibly their team's two most exciting players.

While the latter has arguably received the most praise from the wider footballing public this season, Hudson-Odoi has shone in his own right, scoring eight Premier League goals and becoming a master at bending inch-perfect finishes into the far corner from his left-sided role. One such moment against Bournemouth drew praise from Nuno.

Having only joined from Chelsea last summer, it would be bitterly disappointing to see the £80,000-a-week Hudson-Odoi move on so soon, but the lure of Spurs could be too great for him, allowing him to return to London and also play for a side in Europe next season. If Gibbs-White is there as well, it could appeal even more.

Fletcher, who signed a homegrown contract with DC in 2022, has made 13 MLS appearances this season, scoring one goal.

“I’m happy to be here and buzzing to get started," Fletcher said. "I knew Forest was a big Club, but being at the stadium and understanding more about the history, I now can’t wait to meet my teammates and get going.

"I want to keep learning and developing and I'm confident this is just the start of what will be an incredibly rewarding journey with Forest and our fans."

This will be his second stint in Europe after joining Swansea City's academy side on loan in 2023-24, where he scored eight goals.

WHAT FOREST SAID

Head of Academy Chris McGuane said: “I am delighted to welcome Kristian to Nottingham Forest and we are very happy to add the quality he has to our B Team squad. He brings experience of playing in the MLS and with the potential he has, we are looking forward to working with him and watching him progress further as a player.

"We are excited to see the impact and development that he will make … Everyone at Nottingham Forest wishes Kristian all the very best as he starts what will be an exciting time for him at the club.”

Virat Kohli suggests KL Rahul will keep in T20Is too

India captain Virat Kohli has suggested that KL Rahul will keep in the upcoming T20Is too, as it has given them an option of playing an extra batsman in the XI.Rahul kept wickets in three ODIs against Australia at home – starting after Rishabh Pant suffered a concussion in the first game while batting – even though Pant was fit to play in the third game in Bengaluru, and Kohli said a day before the first T20I in New Zealand in Auckland that Rahul “doing really well with the [keeping] gloves” had “opened up another kind of scenario” for them. With Shikhar Dhawan’s injury, Rahul is also going to get back to opening in the T20Is in New Zealand.”[Dhawan’s injury] will certainly alter a few plans for us… in the one-day game, we’ll have to think of sticking to the same what we did in Rajkot (in the second ODI), that will probably work best for us as a side, have another guy at the top and let KL just express himself at that position where he played really well,” Kohli said. “In T20 cricket, obviously the dynamics change a little bit more, because we do have lower-order batsmen who have done well. We have a few more options there in terms of solidifying that spot and probably let KL bat at the top.”Him doing really well with the gloves has really opened up another kind of scenario for us where it gives us a lot more balance in terms of playing an extra batter. If he can keep that well, and perform well with the bat, then why not? As I said, this is something that we are looking to continue for a while. And nothing taken away from anyone else, it’s just what brings the best balance to the side.”With Pant unavailable for the second ODI against Australia and three openers to accommodate in the XI, Rahul kept wickets and scored a smashing 80 off 52 balls at No. 5 to turn the series around for India. Rahul was asked to open again in the decider with Dhawan’s injury, but with five dismissals behind the stumps in the series and that impressive half-century in Rajkot, Kohli said they were going to “persist” with Rahul keeping and batting in the middle order for some more time.BCCI

Rahul has been moved around the batting order over the years, but has cemented a position for himself at the top in more recent times, and that has led to more consistent returns with the bat: he averages 47.86 and 45.50 in ODIs and T20Is in the last 12 months respectively, both higher than his career average.”It’s amazing. He is open to accepting any kind of role, whatever the team wants – he is a total team man and you can tell the way he keeps as well,” Kohli said of Rahul’s evolution. “He is always looking for an opportunity and looking to make a play, and he is not nervous about it; the collection of throws and getting to the stumps every ball, and he is just in the game. I think he relishes that much more than just being on the field and it’s showing. He is more involved in the game, he is able to look at the field placements as well, so I think it engages him into the game in the right manner. It’s wonderful to have a guy who can do both things well and bring balance to the team.”Dhawan and Sharma were India’s original openers in limited-overs formats but Dhawan’s succession of injuries and Rahul’s form have put a spanner in the works. For now, India named Sanju Samson as Dhawan’s replacement for the T20Is and Prithvi Shaw for the three ODIs to follow. India also have Mayank Agarwal, who was called up during the 50-over World Cup last year, and Shubman Gill in the ranks, who are currently representing India A in New Zealand.”Continuity [is a problem], yes,” Kohli accepted. “But in the meantime, if you talk about replacements, we have a lot of T20 players around, and people who are very experienced when it comes to playing T20 cricket, having played a lot of matches in the IPL and on ‘A’ tours and other series.”I don’t see an issue of replacement. But yes, an issue of continuity for sure. Look, whenever he (Dhawan) is back in the team – he’s done well in the last game that he played – so we’d love to have him back and have that balance in the team where we can really go in with the best batting line-up that we have. But in the meantime, we don’t have any issues with the replacements.”

Arsenal hit jackpot selling academy gem who’s now worth less than Nketiah

Over the last few months, Arsenal have built a reputation as intelligent operators in the transfer market.

For example, the arrivals of Martin Odegaard, Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Martinelli, and even David Raya have all proven to be brilliant moves that have dramatically improved the team's quality.

However, while Mikel Arteta and Edu Gaspar have bought well, they've also sold well.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.

Just a few years ago the pair sanctioned the sale of a Hale End gem for £25m whose value has since cratered and is now worth less than Eddie Nketiah.

Nketiah joined the Gunners as a 14-year-old after being released by cross-city rivals Chelsea and has since become an important member of Arteta's squad.

The academy graduate made his debut for the first team in a Europa League match against Bate Borisov in September 2017, but he made his full debut the following season in the same competition, as Arsenal beat Vorskla Poltava 3-0.

He would make sporadic appearances over the following years and even spend six months on loan with Leeds United in the 2019/20 season before getting a real chance in the first team in the latter half of the 2021/22 campaign, scoring ten goals and providing one assist in 27 appearances as Arsenal came close to securing top four.

The following year, he was just as crucial in the club's title charge when Gabriel Jesus was ruled out for several months with a knee injury, scoring nine goals and providing three assists in 39 games.

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah

However, as valuable as he was last year, the 24-year-old's opportunities have been severely limited this season with the arrival of Kai Havertz.

With his role reduced in the team and his £100k-per-week contract set to run until June 2027, Arsenal appear set to sell their academy product, with West Ham United one of several clubs heavily touted for his signature at a price of around £43m.

It wouldn't be the first time they have successfully cashed in on an academy gem either, and if Nketiah's career mirrors Joe Willock's, then the club could be playing a blinder.

Joe Willock's transfer value after leaving Arsenal

Like Nketiah, Willock fought his way through Arsenal's various youth sides before making his full debut for the first time in the Europa League clash against Bate Borisov in September 2017.

Over the next few seasons, the Waltham Forest-born midfielder made 78 appearances for the Gunners, scoring 11 goals and providing four assists before being sent on loan to Newcastle United for the second half of the 2020/21 campaign. In that period, he scored eight goals in just 14 games.

This excellent run of form saw the Magpies spend £25m to secure the Englishman's signature that summer.

However, in the 85 appearances since, the 24-year-old has scored just seven goals and provided six assists, which would explain why his valuation has plunged since the transfer, with the Football Transfers' Expected Value model pricing the Toon star at just €23m, or £20m, which is £5m less than he was sold for and a whopping £23m less than the price Nketiah could fetch.

Australia win by an innings despite Babar Azam's century

Mohammad Rizwan fell five runs short of a maiden hundred before Australia’s quicks wrapped up victory

The Report by Andrew McGlashan24-Nov-2019Australia were made to work harder than appeared likely in securing an innings-and-five-run victory on the fourth day at the Gabba as Babar Azam scored a magnificently classy second Test hundred and Mohammad Rizwan fell five runs short of his first before the tail went down swinging. When Pakistan were reduced to 5 for 94 in the morning session – the same position they found themselves in the first innings – the prospect of Australia needing the second new ball or coming close to batting again seemed far-fetched. However, Azam and Rizwan added 132 for the sixth wicket then Rizwan was joined by Yasir Shah to put on 79 for the seventh. The loss of Rizwan for 95, moments before the second new ball was taken, ended the resistance and the Pakistan fast bowlers were in for a good time, not a long time. Josh Hazlewood finished with 4 for 63 in what was Australia’s 13th straight victory at home against Pakistan.Azam played an outstanding knock, a fine response to the poor stroke in the first innings which left Pakistan in trouble. He barely put a foot wrong this time, scoring freely around the wicket, with the driving standing out as so often in a typical Azam innings. There were no nervous nineties for him as he pulled Pat Cummins through midwicket before driving wide of mid-off to bring up his first overseas hundred off 160 balls.Nathan Lyon brought his innings to a halt when a quicker delivery found the edge and Tim Paine took a sharp catch, but that was not a prelude to a swift conclusion as Rizwan matched Azam stroke for stroke only to upper cut Hazlewood to third man moments before the second new ball.Significant damage had been done to Pakistan’s top order on the third evening and they resumed on 3 for 64. There were promising signs in the first hour as Azam and Shan Masood repelled the Australia quicks, although Masood was challenged by considerable seam movement Cummins extracted from the fourth-day wicket. It was Cummins who struck first when Masood got a thin top edge on a hook and in the next over Hazlewood produced a peach to take a nick from Iftikhar Ahmed. Pakistan have had no contribution from two of their top six in this match – Ahmed and Haris Sohail – and it will give them plenty to ponder ahead of the Adelaide Test on Friday.Babar Azam celebrates his century•AFPAustralia sensed an early wrap-up but then hit the roadblock. A sweetly-timed drive off Mitchell Starc took Azam to his half-century; his judgement of length against pace and spin was a standout feature of the innings. There was moment of mild concern on 75 when Australia reviewed an lbw shout from Hazlewood which was umpire’s call on trimming the bails.Azam’s Test career has been on an upward curve over the last 12 months and he tuned up stylishly with a hundred against Australia A, but this could yet be a crucial moment in the career of a batsman who is earmarked as one who can join the elite.Rizwan, in his second Test, had shown his feisty qualities in the first innings before edging a Cummins delivery which was a borderline no-ball that many felt should have been called. He played second fiddle to Azam for the first part of his innings but became more aggressive during the afternoon and evening session. His duel with Lyon – whom he slog-swept to bring up his maiden Test fifty from 86 balls – was especially absorbing. The offspinner targeted the footmarks created by Starc and Rizwan was keen to use his feet, highlighted by a wonderful drive through the covers that almost brought applause from the bowler himself. On 92 it appeared he may have fallen to one of the great short leg catches when Marnus Labuschagne moved with a paddle sweep, the ball lobbing behind square with Labuschagne flinging himself full length to get the ball in his fingertips but the third umpire ruled it had been grounded. Subsequent replays suggested it hadn’t hit the bat in any event.Perhaps keen to reach three figures before the new ball, Rizwan’s eyes lit up when Hazlewood’s first ball back was short outside off and he sent it straight to Lyon at third man. The only question then was whether the final three wickets would make Australia’s openers pad up. Yasir – whose batting was encouraging for Pakistan in both innings – missed a maiden Test fifty when he got a leading edge to mid-off and three overs later Matthew Wade’s catch at long-on was the final act in another comprehensive Gabba victory for Australia.

Poch’s "world-class" Spurs star who left in 2020 would flop for Ange

Ange Postecoglou needs time but there is no questioning the potential of this resurgent Tottenham Hotspur side, challenging for Champions League football once again after slumping to an eighth-place Premier League finish last year.

Despite the summer sale of Harry Kane, Postecoglou has married into Daniel Levy's way of life in north London and the shrewd recruitment has formed the bodywork of a new era, the likes of James Maddison, Micky van de Ven, Brennan Johnson, Guglielmo Vicario and more.

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

These players are part of this new wave in part thanks to their athleticism and the dynamic sheen to their skill sets – even shot-stopper Vicario is of the modern cut, ranking among the top 10% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for touches per 90, as per FBref, highlighting his ball-playing presence.

This style of play is a far cry from the counter-playing, conservative styles of recent managers, and for this reason, certain erstwhile phenoms might not thrive under Postecoglou's wing, with Christian Eriksen among them.

Christian Eriksen's Spurs career

Tottenham signed Eriksen from Ajax as a 21-year-old for a £11.5m fee back in 2013, with the promising Dane considered one of Europe's most exciting young midfielders at the time.

While he never won silverware with Tottenham, the now-32-year-old has earned his place among the upper echelon of the club's modern stars, described as a “world-class player” by former Manchester City forward Craig Bellamy during his time in the capital.

Amassing 305 appearances, he scored 69 goals and supplied 90 assists for Spurs, supercharging Kane, Dele Alli and Heung-min Son in their attacking exploits, striking fear into Europe, at their best, as one of the deadliest offensive units around.

But midway through the 2019/20 campaign, out of contract the upcoming summer, Eriksen completed a £17m transfer to Inter Milan after choosing not to extend his deal.

Christian Eriksen's current market value

At present, Eriksen plays for Manchester United and while he enjoyed fruitful success last season, scoring twice and providing ten assists for his teammates across 44 appearances as he won the Carabao Cup, he has slumped into mediocrity this term.

Reflecting this, Football Transfers mark his current value at just £11m, which is a staggering drop-off from his £53m value while plying his trade under Mauricio Pochettino for Tottenham.

Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen.

Of course, he's ageing and it's only natural that he would see such a depreciation, but in hindsight, Spurs got the best out of the player during the brightest days of his career, and he would certainly not make the grade at present, under Postecoglou.

Eriksen would flop in Ange's system

Eriksen is a player of immense technical quality and unparalleled resilience, coming back from cardiac arrest at the 2021 European Championships to continue his Premier League career with Brentford and then United.

When he does hang up the boots, he will go down as one of the Premier League's greatest contemporary midfielders, but the playermaker struggling to impress at the Theatre of Dreams right now and would unquestionably flop with Postecoglou's system.

Strengths

Taking set-pieces

Postecoglou relies on fluency and energy, his players must work tirelessly and possess a sense of multi-functionality to make things tick.

Maddison, who is probably the Lilywhites' closest stylistic match to Eriksen, averages 1.4 dribbles and 5.6 successful duels per outing, whereas Eriksen averages 0.2 dribbles and 1.3 successful duels, as per Sofascore.

Christian Eriksen

There are no two ways about it: it's grim reading, and for a Man United side striving for success and a place in the top four ahead of Tottenham, he's hardly proving to outplay Maddison or indeed prove himself worthy of a regular starting berth.

The Man United star could be on his way out of the club at the end of the season.
